Earlierthisyear,officialsfromthe BurlingtonNorthern-SantaFe(BNSF) agreedtoreplaceandupgradethe “house”track –thetrackthatonce servedthefreighthouse–justwestof theOregonDepotfortheSilverView tositon. Thattrack,locatednorthofthe activeBNSFfreightline,willbethe SilverView’snewhomeduringits nexttworestorationphases.

“It’sfinallyhere,”saidRogerCain smilingbroadlyasthesleekstainless-steeltouringcarwasbacked into itsnewlocationwestoftheDepotby railroadworkers.“We’vebeenworkingonthisforthreeyearsandnow hereitis.”

AbernethyhasownedtheSilver Viewfor20yearsafterpurchasingitat anauctionfromarailwaycompanyin NewYork.Herememberedwatching theZephyr–withtheSilverViewin tow–intheearly 1950swhenvisiting hisauntandunclenearPrairieDu Chien,Wisconsin. “Whenwewouldgodowntovisit them,theywouldsay‘Oh,let’stake MikeovertoseetheZephyr.’And wheneverIsawtheSilverViewonthe backendthatwasabigdealforme,” Abernethysaid.

willincludegettingtheSilverView back toits originalcondition,with a fewaddedextras.Phase2willinclude gettingtheSilverViewreadyforrail travel. CainsaidhavingthecarinOregon shouldhelpspeeduptherestoration process. “Wewillrolloutthewholeplanon Oct.8,”Cainsaid.“Wewillhave focusedpriorities.Fundraisingis goingtobecritical. Atthistimearivalryexisted betweenJohnDixonandJohnPhelps. Thisdisagreementwasprimarily wherethecountyseatshouldbe located.Dixon andPhelpswerethe twomostinfluentialmeninthisarea. Agreatdealofhardfeelingsgrew outoftheselectionofOregonCityas thecountyseat.
