Editor's Note When I think about the evolution of my own style, a montage of cringe-worthy moments flashes before me: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cape I wouldn’t leave home without as a kid (strange because Ninja Turtles didn’t wear capes); the onslaught of oversized NFL jerseys I wore to feel like an equal among my many male cousins; the denim overall shorts my female cohorts and I would combine with tights, turtlenecks and clogs (we looked like a bad ’90s girl band); or the Limited Too corduroy pants and flower power polyester shirts I accessorized with my Tamagotchi digital pet (which I wore as a necklace).

Sadly, I could go on…

Fashion is funny like that. What’s hip and trendy one moment, produces sentimental eye-rolling the next.

And then, of course, some designer somewhere decides it’s time to regurgitate a former fad.

Next thing you know, a younger generation is rocking neon bomber jackets and high-waisted acid-washed jeans.

Of course, the humor lies in the fact that I honestly believe that I’ve come a long way when it comes to fashion sense. That my choices in clothing and hairstyles have improved; that it’s unlikely that I will look back on this very moment with derision and say, “What was I thinking?” But the style saga continues, and I’m certain my future will be littered with regret when it comes to clothing.

Because fashion is funny like that.

A STITCH IN From the Art Institute to New York Fashion Week, designer Cynthia Ashby looks back on how making clothes became a career

By KEVIN DRULEY Fashion designer Cynthia Ashby recently traveled to New York as part of its annual fashion week extravaganza, but she truly finds herself at home in a quainter setting.

A resident of Sharon, Wis. – population roughly 1,600 – Ashby operates her clothing line from the Starline Factory in Harvard and sells her designs at Geneva artisan boutique Artemisia (among other locations).

Ashby describes herself as a “self-taught designer” who studied performance art at the Art Institute of Chicago before transitioning to fashion.

McHenry County Magazine writer Kevin Druley got a chance to chat with the fashion designer about her industry background and inspiration.

The following interview is an edited transcript: KEVIN DRULEY: What does your New York experience entail?

CYNTHIA ASHBY: Well – what we do – we’re not [doing] what you’re picturing when you see the runway shows. There’s trade shows that happen during that time, so we’re basically in a big loft – and we’re set up – and then the buyers come around and they look at the line and write their orders. So, that’s what I’m doing when I go there.

DRULEY: How did you get started in this profession?

ASHBY: I started making clothes as a means of just supporting myself. And so, basically, I would just buy vintage fabrics, and I would make oneof-a-kind garments, and I had some boutiques in Chicago that I would sell them to. And that’s how I started my brand, basically. It just evolved from there … into an actual collection – actual brand.

DRULEY: What has allowed you to remain successful?

ASHBY: Doing it for so long is how I’ve learned and how it’s evolved. And one of the ways that I’ve managed to stay relevant is just to constantly be reacting to how the business is changing, and it changes very quickly a lot.

… I’m a very hands-on designer. I do all my patternmaking, and I do a lot of my samples, meaning actually sew them together. I also have, obviously, a team that helps with everything, but I’m very involved in the process. And that has been, I guess, the key to just being successful and managing to stay in the business.

DRULEY: How would you describe the look of your line?

ASHBY: Basically, my look, it’s a very comfortable, urban look. The fabrics I use are very soft. We garment dye most of my collections, so it has that soft and garment-washed look – a lot of textures.

So, I’ll use a lot of fabrics that have a lot of textures woven into them, and my dye process will bring out those textures.

My shapes are very easy to wear and very relaxed. … My look has been very, kind of, consistent throughout the years. Obviously, it’s changed as fashion changes, but it’s always based on this very soft feel of the fabrics. I’m always inspired by my fabrics and the processes that we do. Sometimes we’ll do a pigment dye painting on the garments or different techniques where we can add a graphic or a pattern to the fabrics. A lot of that is done on the surface after the garment is made, so it has a more edgier feel to it.

T

he past quarter century has brought little but indelible change to the way nearly everyone does their work.

Massive leaps forward in technology have revolutionized entire fields and professions, altering not only the economy but culture itself, in ways people are only beginning to unpack.

Khalid Hasan, owner of Crystal Lake’s Area 51 Tattoos, doesn’t need to look far to see the differences in his chosen field.

For starters, he says, consider the devices he and many of his fellow tattoo artists now use to stencil designs on customers’ skin. Since Hasan started tattooing as an apprentice in 1994 in Marengo, and even since he opened the doors to his shop in 2002, Hasan says that tattooing technology has evolved at a dizzying pace, moving from the traditional coil machines, which he describes as “very elaborate doorbells – loud and heavy” – to the smaller, lighter rotary machines in use in most tattoo parlors today.

“And now, we’re getting these pen-style machines, which are even smaller and lighter still,” says Hasan. “It adds up to less wear and tear on your wrists, which means you can tattoo longer.”

And tattoo artists who can tattoo longer, can etch even more intricate designs, he says.

But the technological evolution extends to the pigments in the tattoo inks, expanding the color palette available to tattoo artists.

“They’re more refined, and much more consistent, leading to much more consistent creations,” Hasan says.

“It’s a pretty big leap from where I started,” says Hasan.

Once taboo, tattoos becoming more mainstream

But while the technology has changed, it has merely been driven by a still greater evolution.

“Acceptance,” says Hasan.

While the number of Americans sporting tattoos has proven a bit hard to pin down, recent reports indicate the number is likely large, and only continuing to grow.

Anecdotally, tattoo artists, like Hasan, point to the growing number of American adults between the ages of 18 to 40, who turn out regularly to either get their first tattoo or add to an expanding gallery of body art.

A more quantified recent estimate from the Pew Research Center indicates at least four in 10 Americans born after 1980 have at least one tattoo.

“People are not only less frightened of tattooing, but they actually desire it. People are seeking out professionals to do it,” Hasan says, noting that his clientele is not so much rebellious teens, but “adults in the mid- to upper-income levels.”

With that kind of money being thrown around, he says, it’s little wonder why the number of tattoo shops have grown exponentially, as has the amount of investment capital being sunk into research and development of new and better tattooing tech.

And as the tattoo industry has entered the mainstream of America’s culture and economy, the sophistication of those seeking tattoos has kept pace, moving tattoos from 14 | APRIL 2018 | MCHENRY COUNTY MAGAZINE

impulse buys to long-sought, and long-planned investments of time and money, placing ever greater demands on tattoo artists.

“The clients know what they want,” says Hasan. “Everybody now wants something custom, nothing off the wall.”

Hasan, who worked as an architect before entering tattooing, says that he welcomes the challenges, and he enjoys working with his clients to help them find just the right design because it will adorn their body for the rest of their lives.

“That’s how it’s supposed to be, anyway,” he adds with a laugh.

The extra time and attention, however, has extended average wait times for appointments at his shop, meaning customers should expect a wait of around three months from the time they book an appointment to the time the work is completed. Once in the chair, however, the actual tattooing still takes a few hours.

Hasan demurred when asked to recall a favorite tattoo. But he says he leans toward “black-and-white portraiture.”

“I love replicating interesting photos of people,” he says. “Kids portraits are especially exciting.”

Customers, however, are not just seeking better artistry, but also modern business practices, as well. That is reflected in the growing interest in tattoo industry standards, such as those promulgated by the National Environmental Health Association, and in research into the health implications of tattoos.

Hasan agrees.

“Ask as many questions as you want,” he says. “This is a permanent, important decision. If anyone ever gives you attitude, just walk out.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics, for instance, issued a report in 2017, noting the rise of tattoos and indicating their research demonstrates the risk of complications from tattoos inked in reputable shops to be “likely low.”

The customers who do their research before contacting a tattoo shop can speed the process along, by coming in well-versed with solid ideas and plans for what they want, he says, and they know if the artists with whom they are speaking are even qualified to create what they have envisioned.

The report, however, still encouraged all those interested in tattoos to take their time, educate themselves, both on the tattooing process and the artist and shop, well before allowing a needle to pump ink into their skin.

“And bring reference materials,” Hasan says. “Every client’s a little different, every artist is a little different. Anything you can do to help us, will help us help you get exactly the tattoo you want.”

“Look for friends and social groups who are physically active,” Waggoner says. “Volunteer work, such as stocking shelves at a food pantry or assisting with maintenance of natural areas, can provide opportunity for socialization as well as movement.”

As for looking great on the outside, Kim Allen, franchise owner of Merle Norman in Fox River Grove, says that women should really focus on taking care of their skin.

“They need to do the three basics; cleansing, toning and moisturizing, but they also need to think about drying,” Allen says. “It’s really about trying things that are comfortable for each person and not falling for tricks in magazines.”

She recommends using sunscreen to protect the skin and slow down other things that come with age, like laugh lines and fine lines. Exfoliating, peels and serums can also work for some women.

“Really, good skin is also about good fats in your diet and good fruits and vegetables,” Allen says.

our clothing is one of the first things people notice when they look at you, so why not wear an outfit that encapsulates your own personality and sets you apart from everyone else?

From preppy and sophisticated to tomboy and boho, there are so many different styles and trends just waiting to be incorporated into your wardrobe.

“How well you dress, what condition your clothes are in and how tidy you are reflect a lot about how you live your life and what type of people you will attract,” says Sherree Rothstein, owner of the The Clothes Gallery in Crystal Lake.

Color is one of the simplest ways to breathe individuality and personality into an outfit.

“Bright and cheery colors reflect a person who is outgoing and approachable,” Rothstein says.

“Muted tones may be reflective of a corporate style or a person who would prefer less attention.

“Think of yourself as a reflection of your inner (ever-changing) self,” Rothstein says. “Today you are feeling romantic, so ruffles and lace are your choices. Feeling sexual? Try a low-cut V-neck top or a satin blouse that has a sensual feel. Need a lift? Try some bright colors or something new.”

For those looking to switch it up and express themselves more through clothing, Rothstein says not to hesitate to try things on.

“To step out of a rut, when you go shopping, try at least one or two items of the newest trends,” Rothstein says. “The ‘going trend’ may not be for you, but this will give you a chance to step out of your box and see if you can update your wardrobe.”

While some people like to stay in their safe zones and others like to venture out and try new styles, every style choice can reflect who you are as a person.

“It’s really a first impression of you,” Bauer says.

“If you’re dressed sloppy, people’s first impression is that you don’t have it together. If they look nice, their hair is done and they have a cute outfit on, automatically as a human, you’re drawn to them.”

MAKEUP MUSTS Beauty experts share tips to a flawless face | By ALLISON HORNE

From foundation and concealer to eyeliner and mascara, makeup has the power to transform your face from tired and drab to flawless and stunning.

While women tend to have their own techniques and routines for applying makeup on a daily basis, several local beauty experts have a “how to” guide to perfecting the process.

“Everybody’s different,” says Kim Allen, franchise owner of Merle Norman in Fox River Grove. “It’s not one size fits all. It’s all about the woman and what’s right for her.”

Most routines start with foundation, which is the base of the entire makeup application process. While foundation is often used for classic coverage, BB and CC creams can also be used for a lighter coverage and moisturizer.

“Find a fabulous foundation or BB cream that evens out your skin tone,” says Cheryl Santucci, director of beauty and esthetics for Mario Tricoci Hair Salons and Day Spas.

Santucci also recommends adding a powder for an extra touch of color, something that she incorporates to her makeup routine on a daily basis.

“At the end of my makeup, I lightly brush on a soft, shimmery powder in the middle of the forehead, upper cheekbones and chin,” Santucci says. “It’s a total face brightener and makes makeup look fresh all day.”

Like matching foundation and skin tones, eyeshadow and liner should also be paired with colors and tones to properly accentuate features.

“Liner and shadows should go with your eye color,” Allen says. “Back in the ’70s, it was more about what you were wearing, but now it’s more about matching your eye color.”

Allen recommends using charcoal or brown eyeshadow to make blue eyes pop, while brown eyes can basically be paired with anything but grey. It’s also possible to experiment with eyeliner to add a pop of color. At Merle Norman, they offer free personalized lessons and samples for women who may be unsure about what is right for their faces.

“There’s not really one rule,” Allen says. “One set of blue eyes is different than another. That’s what makes it so fun.”

But what goes on must come off – every single day.

“Never go to bed with your makeup on,” Allen says. “Not only are you leaving it on your sheets and pillowcases, but you also have to let your skin repair itself at night. A lot of women even wear a nighttime moisturizer.”

While makeup can alter any woman’s look, it all comes down to taking care of the skin underneath.

“Skincare is the most important part of makeup,” Allen says. “We teach the three basics: cleanse, tone and moisturize.”

Allen emphasizes washing your face in the morning and evening, and also moisturizing regularly to help keep skin ample and healthy.

Exfoliating and sunscreen are also keys to keeping skin looking great.

The general concept behind makeup application hasn’t changed much over the years, but there are certain trends that come in and out of style with the seasons.

“The smoky eye is always in style,” Allen says.

“But right now for spring, it’s a much lighter look; while in the fall, it’s a richer look; and in the winter, there’s always some sparkle. A lot of young women like to change it up.”

While trends come and go, makeup should always represent who you are and it should always make you feel your best.

“Makeup should be fun and the wearer should find her own style,” Santucci says. “I say do anything that is your personality – have fun with it.”

There’s notable potential for getting creative in the powder room, and it’s the right space to “go bold with trend,” says Esslinger.

“It’s a smaller space; it’s a smaller investment if you’re going to do wallpaper or some kind of treatment with tile; you’re not using as much tile,” he says. “It’s a cool space to be able to do some things that are a little bit different, and you can be completely unique to the rest of the house.”

n today’s hectic, fast-paced and technology-laden world, it’s hard to find the time to unplug, slow down and unwind. But taking a few minutes each day to enjoy some quiet meditation can help you feel calm, balanced and ready to face the day.

Meditation has long been practiced to help reduce anxiety and calm the nervous system. Ann Waring, owner of Yoga Seva in Crystal Lake, says that regular meditation can help to “reset” and focus the brain, making you feel less reactive to stress.

“Women today are frustrated and overwhelmed; we have a tendency to be nurturing, but if we’re not nurturing ourselves, nurturing others becomes a chore,” Waring says. “People aren’t focused. We have access to everything and filling time as a distraction keeps you from being in the present moment, or being aware of what’s going on at a given time.”

While there are many ways to meditate, Waring prefers mantra meditation, where a single Sanskrit sound is repeated in the mind while seated upright. She says meditating for just 10 minutes a day can do wonders for calming the nervous system, and recommends meditating at the same time every day in a quiet, comfortable space.

“As a result of many years of meditation, I’m not a reactive person,” she says.

“There’s no such thing as a good or bad meditation,” she explains. “Even if you experience stillness of the mind, that doesn’t mean there’s a greater benefit than a session in which the mind stays active. Also make sure you schedule time to meditate.”

Waring recommends that beginners attend a workshop or class to help them get started on their meditation practice. She also says that the app “Insight Timer” is a great way to practice meditation at home.

The Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock offers about 400 meditation classes a year on a donation-only basis. Head monk Bhate Sujatha encourages everyone, especially beginners, to visit the temple to try a class. He says that if everyone meditates, they will become more compassionate, peaceful and loving, which would make the world a better place.

“When people meditate, their reactions are more peaceful. When we learn how to love ourselves through meditation, we can love others,” he explains. “How people think affects the quality of life. I know a lot of people who have material things but are extremely unhappy. If you have a good mind, you can enjoy material things. If you don’t have a good mind, you won’t enjoy life.”

‘Dad style’ clothing is now cool, JUST NOT ON ACTUAL DADS | By JONATHAN BILYK

It had been a long time coming.

articles proclaiming it as “Dad Style.”

But my interest was finally sparked by an article that I read by the light of a smartphone. I can’t remember the publication anymore, but the author had promised – Promised! – the one word at the heart of his treatise would improve my life: Declutter.

At first, the notion had generated little but a muffled snort of derision. But the next morning, upon opening the closet door, the need could no longer be denied amid the inaudible, yet deafening snorts of derision echoing back at me from the 20-year-old fashion statements hanging far in the back, buried in what appeared to be the mists of time.

The oversized bomber jacket; the vertical striped casual shirts; white, chunky athletic shoes; the light-colored stonewashed-denim-everything – all reminding me of a 30-inch waistline and windblown hair, back in the days before articles on smartphones or the term “declutter.”

In that moment, the decision was made. After all, I rationalized, I had never intended to keep all of that stuff (rationalization is a powerful force.)

No, it was the fault of our firstborn. When she came along, the nesting instinct obviously kicked in, and, well, we just kept nesting (obviously).

With the freedom and clear head that follows deflected blame, within days, the work was complete. Everything in the closet not worn in the last three years was gone – stuffed into bags and given to the nice folks at the Salvation Army. Since then, I believe that someone (with a 30-inch waist, wavy hair, maybe round-frame glasses) who smelled like teen spirit and could quote Fresh Prince lines like they would never go out of style, is rocking the wares of my former self.

And for some time, I conceded, the article by that writer was correct: Decluttering brought nirvana one step closer.

Then, this kid walked in the door.

However, for those of us with near-teenage kids, who – thanks to decluttering, thickened waistlines and the fashion-shopping budget constraints imposed by the aforementioned “near-teenage kids” – cannot partake in this renaissance of our youth, there may yet still be a measure of solace. For, in a few years, when those kids actually do enter their teen years, there may yet be clearance racks at Target, Kohl’s and other fine, dadfriendly retail outlets at least two years behind the trends, and loaded with unwanted knock-offs of our youth, offering us the opportunity to again clutter our closets and our wardrobes with the clothing styles we all once loved – and owned before deciding to declutter.

I had never met him before, and still don’t know who he was. But his sudden appearance at the restaurant stirred some neon-clad memories, as my mind raced. And I have no idea how long I sat there, staring like a high schooler waiting on dial- But, this time, the snorts of derision will only come from the embarrassed children entering up AOL, when I realized this young man looked like he could have walked right off the set of the their teen years.

TV show “Saved by the Bell.”

The amazing sightings only continued. There, a pair of high-top Nikes. And there, high-waisted, loose fitting, light-colored denim. Polos. Ballcaps with curved brims. And there, denim on denim on denim on denim – and none of it worn “ironically.”

When Bruno Mars popped up on my TV screen, dancing on a mock-up of the set of “In Living Color,” complete with white, chunky sneakers, it was official: The ’90s were back. And while the knowledge that fashion is cyclical can seem reassuring, it certainly isn’t helped by reading

Nancy Roozée uses love for the past to drive local endeavors

N

ancy Roozée says she finds the early American years interesting, from the historical stories to the period furniture and architecture. It’s a simple love of the past that has continued to help Roozée wind down her career path, from running a local antique store to now managing a historical society and museum.

Roozée is the office manager for the McHenry County Historical Society & Museum located in Union. Her many tasks include coordinating volunteers, creating the nonprofit organization’s financial books, producing a quarterly newsletter for society members, designing graphic materials, organizing school trips and research requests, and simply keeping the museum running day after day.

“She always steps up to the plate with whatever needs to be [done] and gets it done,” says Kurt Begalka, administrator of the McHenry County Historical Society & Museum.

Begalka says he’s known Roozée for a number of years - during the time she spent volunteering with the historical society’s board and while she was undertaking her volunteer projects at the museum. He admires her hard work and her creativity, which has borne such events as an annual quilt contest and show and museum flash sales.

Roozée first connected with the historical society in the late 1990s, helping out with the organization’s Heritage Fair auction.

She was invited to

help price items for the auction, a perfect fit complementing her love of antiques. An avid antique shopper for her own home, Roozée decided to take it a step further and share her finds. In 1991, she opened The Crossroad Merchant on Riverside Drive in downtown McHenry, offering antiques and collectibles from the early 1800s through mid-century 1900. While running the store, Roozée became involved in the McHenry Downtown Business Association and served as the board secretary.

“McHenry is a great town,” Roozée says.

When shopping trends began to shift in 2000, Roozée says she decided to close the shop.

“I thought I was ready for retirement,” Roozée says. “I thought I would go do some gardening, learn to golf. But retirement didn’t last. A new opportunity presented itself, and I felt confident and interested in doing it.”

Roozée was invited to manage the auction committee and serve on the historical society’s board of directors. She became the treasurer in 2007. Six years later, she was hired as the office manager and volunteer coordinator.

“My job is challenging,” Roozée says. “It is filled with many different duties and activities, which

require constantly switching gears physically and mentally. I use a lot of Post-it notes!”

But along with her strong work ethic, Roozée also brings a love and appreciation for history.

Being able to work at the museum and ensure future generations understand the past inspires Roozée’s hard work.

“History is very much alive in this world.

Book Nook ‘FASHIONABLE’ FINDS | By ALLISON MANLEY

The word “fashion” elicits a lot of stereotypes – one image you may conjure could be models strutting across a runway donning the latest clothes from some designer’s collection. Possibly that designer is eccentric and demanding, and he or she lives in New York City, Paris or Milan. And the models are dressed in edgy pieces that can only be worn on a runway (and by models).

While there might be some truth to these stereotypes in the fashion world, it’s actually about so much more than that.

Check out these books that discuss the less-traveled roads of fashion.

 ‘BELIEVE ME: A MEMOIR OF LOVE, DEATH, AND JAZZ CHICKENS’

By Eddie Izzard Eddie Izzard may not be the first person that comes to mind when you think of fashion icons, but he is a brilliant comedian with a unique relationship to clothing and makeup. He reveals this relationship, as well as many other details from his life, in the quirky new book “Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens.”

As a self-identified transgender individual, Izzard discovered his identity by exploring his interest in women’s clothing as a young child. A recurring theme throughout the book is how many of his decisions in life were affected by his desire to be himself. “Believe Me” is smart and funny as you read about bombing at comedy shows and how he strategized (or tried to strategize!) what schools could help his success.

The goal of the book isn’t just to make you laugh; it’s to show you the tragedies and successes in Izzard’s life that led to him being one of the most celebrated and complex comedians of our time.  ‘THE DIARY OF A NOSE: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A PARFUMEUR’

In “The Diary of a Nose: A Year in the Life of a Parfumeur,” you get a first-hand account of the elusive perfume industry from Jean-Claude Ellena – a head perfumer at Hermès. Through Ellena’s stream-ofconscious scribbles, we see the research, methods and motivations that go into the elite perfumes offered by one of the world’s top fashion houses.

Ellena doesn’t go into a lot of detail on how he rose to his prestigious position. Instead, he uses his diary to remark on things, such as a bouquet of sweet peas he once smelled and how he tried to recreate it; and how trying to capture the greenfloral essence of nasturtium has proven more

difficult than he anticipated. He describes some of his works-in-progress (some of which have since been released) and how he tries to explore new scents around the world. The end of the book is a sort of guide to the chemicals in many perfumes, and what combinations produce the effect of wellknown and loved scents, like lily and pear.

By Meg Lukens Noonan “The Coat Route” explores the story of a $50,000 coat commissioned by an affluent man from Canada.

That’s the book’s premise, but Meg Lukens Noonan explores so much more in this thorough investigation into clothing, the concept of luxury, and how fashion has helped shaped history.

Each chapter focuses on a certain aspect of the coat: the silk lining, the elegant buttons, the decorative gold trimming, and so on. Throughout these chapters, Noonan visits the vendors whose lives have focused on designing that part of a piece of clothing perfectly. We get a glimpse into production processes, the training methods used by the small companies excelling in their craft, and, of course, we see how much each aspect of the coat costs.

Other topics, tangential to the coat-making process, are discussed as well. Noonan explores the importance of language in luxury and tailormade items: What one person calls “bespoke” is different than what another person might think.

Conservation efforts and animal rights also are discussed, as both llamas (vicuñas, to be specific) and silkworms were needed to make the titular piece of clothing.

Noonan argues that despite the high cost, the coat is essentially worth it – and this book, in turn, is worth a read.

Paula Kuehl has been painting since 1981. She started painting with oils, before discovering pastels – the artist’s preferred medium.

“I love pastels; they are drawing in color, and I love to draw,” she says. “They are vibrant, fun and rich in color.”

Kuehl says her work tries to capture the essence of life, whether it’s in the face of a child, a flower or a landscape. Her work is included in private and corporate collections, including Elk Grove Village City Hall, the Elk Grove Park District and the Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg, among other places.

Over the years, Kuehl has received many

awards for her work, such as “Best of Show” at the Cary Art Fair; an Award of Excellence at Art Centre 2001 in Elk Grove Village; the President’s Award at the Northwest Pastel Society’s Members Show; third place at the Open Door to Autumn Art in Door County, Wisconsin; the Juror’s Choice Award at Winter Thaw 2003 in Decatur; and many more. In May 2012, she became a Member of Excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society.
