High school hockey teams prep for playoff runs By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The high school hockey season has been going since late September, and the postseason will begin in late February, continue through March and culminate in the Illinois State High School Hockey Championships Tournament finals March 20. Here’s a look at how some of the local boys hockey teams have done so far this season.
Lyons Township Division: IHSHL West Coach: Ricky Reznick Season update: The Lions are 5-16-0-3 in the IHSHL West with just two games left in the regular season. Senior
forward Hugh Meehan leads the team with 16 goals and nine assists in league games. Randall Funk (five goals, eight assists) and Hunter Wilkinson (six goals, five assists) also have double digit points in the league play. Sophomore Jacob Conger has shown some potential by scoring six goals in 22 league games, which is tied for second best on the team. Seniors Alexander Hernandez and Paolo Delfini have shared time in goal. While LT is right behind rival Hinsdale Central in the standings, the Red Devils beat the Lions 8-4 in the teams’ Winter Classic at Cicero’s Bobby Hull Community Ice Rink on Dec. 20.
Fenwick Division: Chicago Catholic Hockey League Coach: Tim Bossy Season update: The Friars have had one of the premier programs in the state for years and play a tough schedule. The Chicago Catholic Hockey League provides top competition, and the Friars have also played tournaments against other top teams from the state, including defending state champion New Trier, Stevenson and Glenbrook North. This season, Fenwick has been up and down. As of Jan. 17 the Friars are 9-6-0-1 in the CCHL, sitting squarely in the middle of the 10-team league. Ben Kohen is the team’s leading scorer despite missing
some time with a shoulder injury. He has 12 goals and 14 assists in CCHL games to rank in the top 10 in the league. Mackenzie Sinnott (eight goals, 11 assists) and Michael Doherty (seven goals, nine assists) have also been among the team’s leaders offensively. Barker Paul and Jonathan Paunove have split most of the time between the pipes.
Nazareth/RB/Guerin/IC Division: IHSHL Suburban Coach: Derek Gordon Season update: The combined team, which features players from Nazareth, Guerin, Riverside Brookfield and IC Catholic, is 6-6 in the Suburban Division of the IHSHL. This is the third season RB
has joined the team, and it has allowed the program to field both varsity and JV teams. Four players from the team recently competed in the conference’s all-star game: Pat Boniecki and Blake Gordon from Nazareth, Grant Hennessy from IC and Matthew Gale from Guerin. Goaltender Dominik Slezak and RB’s Michael Helf have also been key contributors. The team has endured a number of one-goal games in league play, making for competitive play. “It’s been a pleasure to watch, and it’s been quite a chore coaching the games,” coach Derek Gordon said with a laugh. “There’s constantly intense games and it’s fun.”
