Mount Assisi gets proper send-off SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – Mount Assisi Academy students past and present showed their appreciation for their alma mater during a closing ceremony Sunday outside the school. Cardinal Francis George made a surprise appearance to help lead the ceremony. “It was always in the plan [to have Cardinal George] but we didn’t announce it because of his health,” Provincial Leader Sister Therese Anne Quigney said. She said having the Cardinal at the ceremony gave it added significance. Quigney said many of those unable to come sent messages via email and Facebook. In January, the school announced it would be closing, citing low enrollment, an increasing budget deficit and the small number of Franciscan Sisters available to serve the school. Quigney said the Franciscan Sisters do not have a definite plan of what they will do with the building. It is part of a larger campus that includes the Alvernia Manor retirement home.
