Arboretum volunteer still going after 30 years By LEE V. GAINES

msleditorial@shawmedia.com LISLE – Lisle resident Lorna Turner saw a newspaper article in the early 1980s seeking volunteers to dip apples in taffy for a festival at the Morton Arboretum. “It sounded like a fun thing to do,� Turner said. On a day off work, she and her mother helped pre-dip 2,000 taffy apples for the event. Turner has been volunteering on a regular basis at the arboretum, on Route 53 in Lisle, ever since. After her first gig, Turner, 59, who works as a tax accountant for ThyssenKrupp in downtown Chicago, became more and more involved at the arboretum with her late husband, Jim, and their two daughters, now ages 22 and 26. Turner has spent more than 30 years volunteering in a variety of ways, including writing thank you notes, participating in many family and annual events and nature

er said, are knowledgeable, trained guides who lead visitors through areas of interest in the arboretum. One of Turner’s regular jobs is working at The Arboretum Store. “When she is here at the store, she is a real go-getter, rock steady, a hard worker and really friendly,� said store manager Jacque Fucilla. Every September, Turner helps check thousands of spring blooming bulbs for the arboretum’s annual sale, Fucilla said. “She’s got a lot of experience and information to share,� she said.
