Lions wrestle to regional title with 10 champs By JASON ROSSI ‘jrossi@shawmedia.com Lisle wrestling coach John Davis gave an apt description of his team’s performance at its own regional tournament Saturday. “I thought we wrestled pretty well,” Davis said.

While accurate, Davis’ account didn’t reflect just how well the Lions performed. They sent all 13 wrestlers who competed in the regional on to this weekend’s Plano sectional. They crowned 10 champions. And they won their first regional title since 2009. “We didn’t expect to get

everybody through, but we came out and we wrestled well,” Davis said. Bailey Welch (160 pounds), Kevin Sheahan (182) and Jared Arellano (220) didn’t take home titles but finished strong with wins in thirdplace matches. Sheahan and Arellano secured their sec-

tional berths with pins in the third-place matches. The coach hopes the trend continues at the sectional as his wrestlers look to punch their tickets to the state tournament. The top four wrestlers at each weight class this weekend move on to state. “It’s definitely going to be

a challenge this week,” Davis said. Lisle should be familiar with much of the competition. Interstate Eight Conference foes Wilmington, Coal City, Dwight, Herscher, ReedCuster, Plano, Peotone, Seneca, Westmont and Manteno all filter into the Plano sectional.
