As

Dennis Piron and Matt Holm see it, few mascots and nicknames come more naturally than Batavia and its Bulldogs — a near-perfect fit attested to by their bulldogthemed arm tattoos.

“There’s a lot of pride there, a real unifying thing,” says Piron. “It’s about being loyal, hardworking, tenacious.

“And it sure has grabbed on nice, hasn’t it?”

Since 2011, Piron has served as head football coach at Batavia High School. Together with Holm, the school’s current defensive coordinator and former longtime baseball coach, Piron has led the Batavia Battlin’

Bulldogs to the rarified heights of high school football, winning two state titles since 2013 and still more conference titles, helping to spread Bulldog mania throughout the southernmost of the Tri-Cities.

But while that success has fired up the Bulldogs' fan base, Batavia High School alumni like Piron and Holm know the identity stretches much farther back, to earlier periods in their area’s history.

Perhaps no Batavian has devoted more time and energy to researching the origins of Batavia’s athletic nickname than George Scheetz, director of the Batavia Public Library. While only a relatively recent arrival — he moved to Batavia in 2004 — Scheetz says he quickly became one of the community’s biggest history buffs, particularly enamored with all things surrounding the long rivalry between BHS and its Geneva counterpart.

In a historical twist, Scheetz says, the rivalry could have looked markedly different, but for a decision in the 1930s.

According to his research, the bulldog identity almost never materialized. Instead, the high school could easily still be taking the field under the name of “Vikings” — a moniker now associated entirely with Geneva. “It really would be something, wouldn’t it?” says Scheetz with a laugh.

Originally, he notes, his research indicates both Batavia and Geneva were known to fans by their team colors.

In Batavia, that meant the team was known as the “Red and Gold,” or perhaps the “Crimson and Gold.”

And in Geneva, the team was known as the “Blue and White.”

The respective schools maintain those color schemes to this day.

However, at some point in the early 20th century, BHS squads became one of the first in the area to adopt an official nickname, becoming known as the Vikings.

That team name, however, was dropped at some point — Scheetz says his research doesn’t indicate exactly why. But it may have been related to an intra-Batavia rivalry between the primarily Scandinavian residents on one side of the Fox River, and the largely nonScandinavian population on the other. With a paucity of residents of Scandinavian descent on the squad, the name Vikings may have simply proven politically unacceptable.

But whatever the reason, the nickname was dropped in the 1930s, and by the mid-1940s, it had been replaced

by the now-beloved Battlin’ Bulldogs, leaving the Vikings name to Geneva.

Scheetz notes he can find no reference at any time to an actual live bulldog at BHS, nothing akin to the canine known as Uga (pronounced “Uh-gah”) that runs on the field with the University of Georgia’s Bulldogs.

However, in the 1960s, he says, students voted on the name for their official bulldog icon mascot, settling on Brutus. The vote, he says, appeared tied to a contest to boost basketball ticket sales.

Through the decades, Scheetz and Piron say, Brutus and the Battlin’ Bulldogs have come to not only capture the interest of the Batavia community, but in many ways reflect what they say are part of the community’s nature and character.

Piron says, of the three, Batavia has most retained its character as a “small-ish town.”

Living in and attending school in Batavia in the 1970s and ’80s, they say, the Bulldog identity was real, but “you didn’t really hear a lot about it.”

Today, however, fueled by the school’s recent run of success in football and other sports, adults and children in Batavia, down to the grade school and youth football levels, proudly display their Bulldog pride. Piron and Holm wear that spirit on their arms — literally.

Holm boasts a full bulldog face on his arm, and Piron displays a dog paw.

“I tell people if I were to go coach anywhere else — which I am definitely not! — I’d need to cut my arm off,” says Holm, with a laugh.

“It’s an attitude thing. Here, everybody’s a dog.”

“It would be fair to say that some of the values associated with those characteristics have come to be imbued into the ‘Bulldog spirit,’” Scheetz says.

Piron and Holm agree: That spirit has really come to life, often in vivid color in recent

CHORES OF THE GARDEN VARIETY MUSINGS ON GARDENING, DOING CHORES AND SPENDING TIME WITH THOSE WHO MATTER

S

ome years back — I believe it was a wedding — someone posed the question to a round table, which included me and a group of other notso-wealthy folks: When you strike it rich, who would be the first domestic assistant you’d hire?

For some — who, I noted, had toddlers running around their house — the quick answer was, “Nanny!”

For those who didn’t want to miss the ups and downs of parenthood, but had still grown tired of

cleaning up after those little ones without whom parenthood can’t happen, the desire for a maid topped the list.

Curiously, no one at the table, as I recall, chose chauffeur or chef, though many of them had perhaps not yet entered the calendar-juggling, ships-passing-in-the-night phase of life in which such assistance would be of high value.

For me, though, the answer has always been the same: gardener.

There are few things that I simultaneously love and hate more than gardening.

Digging in the black, rich earth to plug in a new seedling further satisfies the soul, enhancing the feeling of connection to the circle of life (as you now have the score from “The Lion King” playing in your mind … well, that, boys and girls, is also how you successfully plant an earworm without ever playing a note of actual music.)

But to arrive at such moments of bliss, there are so many other, sweatier, dirtier and generally less pleasant moments that first intervene.

Your results may vary. But this growing season, in this particular backyard, it has seemed as though there have been more of those generally less pleasant moments than in years past. While the flowers have been abundant, and the tomatoes and cucumbers are now growing fine, my garden has yielded a bumper crop of weeds.

Perhaps it was the wet spring. Perhaps it was some other cause. If any master gardeners have any helpful insight, like corn, I’m all ears.

But there I was, on an otherwise beautiful summer morning, in one of my flower beds, pulling handful after handful of weeds — crabgrass, dandelions, wild

grapevines and hordes of other fast-growing plants that have names unknown to me — that had sneakily invaded and now threatened to overwhelm.

As the mounds of weeds filled the yard waste cans, and the sweat began to soak the back of my shirt, I could hear my kids in the house, and on the patio, living their best summer vacation lives. My thoughts turned back to that wedding, some years ago, and to other weddings and other special events.

At these events, we always take such special care to attempt to soak it all in. From the moment the event begins, cameras, whether they be real honest-togoodness cameras or the high-powered pixel catchers we carry in our pockets and purses every day, are out and at the ready, capturing glimpses of the celebration from all angles.

But in our everyday lives? Perhaps you are better people than me. But it has always stood as a struggle for me to stay present in a seemingly mundane moment and just soak it in.

Sure, the moment is recognized. But usually as it buzzes past my ear, like the bees whizzing around and above me.

Instead, my life moves quickly from deadline to deadline, crisis to crisis, task to task, with always so much more to be done.

And then, I look up through the sweat, and the little girl waving at me through the French doors is now a young woman, barreling on toward her own future of adulting.

Like the task of gardening, this life is such a delicate balance. On one hand, we know those little ones are always watching us with impressionable eyes, absorbing life lessons even when — especially when — no words are being spoken. So, lessons like the satisfaction that comes from working hard, taking care of what needs to be done and stepping back to admire a job well done … these cannot be simply brushed aside.

But we can also choose, every so often, to simply whistle past the weeds, scoop up those little ones while they are still small, seeking adventure, to soak in the moment, the now.

Because, as we know, there will always be more sweat to be poured, more events to populate our calendars, more weeds to be pulled.  Jonathan Bilyk writes about the triumphs and travails of being a modern-day dad who legitimately enjoys time with his family, while tolerating a dog that seems to adore him. He also doesn’t really like the moniker “Superdad” because it makes it sound like he wants to wear his undergarments on the outside of his pants. (Also, the cape remains on back order.)

BECOMING SENSITIVE TO SENSORY NEEDS From haircuts to summer camp, businesses are increasingly able to accommodate a range of sensory needs

arylou Gonzalez’s son loathed haircuts. He detested the clippers. She says taking him for a haircut was horrible.

She knew there had to be a better way. And when the St. Charles resident couldn’t find what she needed for her child, she and her husband decided to build the solution themselves. They invested in the franchise Pigtails & Crewcuts Haircuts for Kids and went the extra mile to train their staff on supporting clients who need extra time or care.

“Because I wish I would have had this. It would have been much easier,” Gonzalez says. “We understand some of the struggles that families face because we are that family.”

The salon invites clients who may need extra care to schedule an appointment; staff take time to learn more about a client’s needs and, if needed,

“Our stylists will spend time with the client and child, explaining the process, showing them the clippers or scissors,” Gonzalez says. “Our staff is able to offer ample time because they care about the children and want to do whatever they can to make it easier.”

To train the staff at the salon, Gonzalez reached out to My Recess Therapy. Owner Brooke Backsen opened the sensory-based clinic in 2013 and today has locations in St. Charles and Elgin, providing pediatricfocused occupational, speech and physical therapies.

Backsen and her team of specialized therapists welcome opportunities to help educate others about sensory-based needs, adding that it makes good business sense to create opportunities for those with sensory processing challenges to feel welcomed.

“It is so valuable for local businesses to be aware and understand sensory processing challenges as it can impact children through adults,” Backsen says. “Understanding

sensory processing can support any patron’s experience in your business space. It can range from how loud and the acoustics of a dining experience to the smells of a shop to the lighting of a space. Being aware and supporting these aspects of an experience for a shopper, diner or patron can support everyone involved, but will also make these experiences accessible to all.”

How one’s brain and body take in and respond to sensory information can vary by person and by day. Sensory processing challenges can vary to different degrees.

People who experience these challenges can feel overstimulated, sending their nervous system into a fight-or-flight mode, which in a child can sometimes look like a meltdown.

feeling overwhelmed during day camp at St. Charles Park District, they can use the sensory retreat tent in Pottawatomie Park. The blackout tent was designed and donated by the My Recess Therapy team and is a new feature this summer, following a staff training. Taylor Krawczyk, school days program and camp supervisor for the St. Charles Park District, says children and even staff have used the retreat tent this summer.

“We love it. Whenever kids, campers need a break, they can go there,” Krawczyk says. On some of the hotter summer days, in the late afternoon, she adds the retreat tent has been a great tool to use when campers feel exhausted, frustrated and need a little time to regroup.

Krawczyk says park district staff is already planning to use the tent in other ways, including

having it available during events and other activities, since it is easy to set up the tent and its bin of fidgets.

Backsen says she and her team at My Recess Therapy have welcomed the opportunity to educate, train and help the community develop programs. One of those partnerships includes Stay + Play Local Tri-Cities, which has a listing of sensory-friendly businesses and experiences on its website.

“It’s been my mission with My Recess Therapy to be out in the community and to work with what we call our partners in care,” Backsen says.

“Local businesses sharing similar missions and values allows us to do better and be better for our community. I believe the Fox Valley is one of the most sensory-friendly communities in the state, maybe even the country.”

Recently, Kane County Magazine talked with Krysta Fox, co-owner of Pug & Hound Pet Apothecary in Geneva, a bit about our beloved furry friends. This interview has been edited slightly for length.  KANE COUNTY MAGAZINE: How do you help pet owners who have animals with health issues?

KRYSTA FOX: Since all of our staff are veterinary technicians, and I am a veterinary technician myself, this is our specialty. We help owners by providing information about their dog’s issue, alternatives to support their pet through their condition, and food options to help support them therapeutically.  KC: How does a proper diet improve an animal’s life?

KF: A fresh, whole food diet improves every animal’s life, and there is a lot of scientific research and studies to back this up. From lowering inflammatory markers,

to providing a healthier microbiome, and being overall much safer. Unfortunately, most veterinary professionals were taught by processed pet food companies, so it takes a skilled veterinarian with objective training in nutrition to understand this. We bridge that gap by providing information that pet owners can give to their vets to help make the switch.

of disease rather than just treatment and management of it. I think we are already making progress in this area, since many pet parents don’t look at their dog as just a pet, but rather as a member of their family.

 KC: What is the fresh food movement for animals?

KF: Read the book “The Forever Dog” by Rodney Habib and Dr. Karen Becker. The information provided in that book does an amazing job of preparing anyone for owning and maintaining a happy and healthy dog.

KF: The fresh food movement is just as it sounds: It is a movement dedicated to advocating for pet parents to feed fresh, whole, unprocessed foods to their pets to see the extraordinary health benefits it provides.  KC: How do we move forward so that pet parents understand the commitment of getting a pet?

KF: It really has to start with the person you’re getting the pet from. They need to properly prepare pet owners for their pet’s expenses instead of just selling them (or adopting to them) the pet without much preparation. From there, usually the next person a pet parent will encounter is their vet. This is going to be the person responsible for managing your pet’s health (other than the owner). They also need to be a more proactive, integrative vet that focuses on PREVENTION

 KC: What do you suggest a family/person does before becoming a pet owner for the first time?

 KC: Why should pet lovers check out Pug & Hound?

KF: Because we are here to help educate and advocate.

Now in its third year, the Batavia Boardwalk Shops’ incubator program has brought 12 new brick-and-mortar spaces to the local retail scene

W

hisper-soft colors beckon browsers into Hazelry, one of 10 shops that line the pristine boardwalk at 114 E. Wilson St. in Batavia. A step inside the candle-scented air reveals women’s garments awash in creams and sage greens as well as handcrafted jewelry in an array of styles, from barely-there studs to statement pieces.

Owner Emma Hazel of Sterling is no stranger to retail, having worked and sold her jewelry designs at the boutique Wyckwood House in downtown Wheaton (which also has an Aurora location), but she acknowledges running her own shop is a distinctly different experience.

“It’s a big gamble not knowing what it’s like to launch a storefront,” she says. It’s for this reason that Hazel

and other nearby shop owners are appreciative of the opportunity they’ve been given — a chance to take part in the innovative incubator program that is the Batavia Boardwalk Shops.

Now in its third year, the program exists for individuals with an existing business, be it a home-based or e-commerce enterprise, as well as those with a business plan and the drive to make it happen.

Applicants who are selected by committee are then able to rent one of the 10-by-10 brick-and-mortar spaces.

Experts in the community provide pro bono business counseling, addressing the myriad concerns and challenges that come with small business ownership.

The chosen 10 also benefit from marketing efforts as well as the camaraderie and support of both fellow and

former participants.

“It’s been really great getting all these tools,” Hazel says. “It’s so overwhelming when you’re doing it by yourself. This way we can ask each other questions and figure out things like how much stock is needed and what kind of products will sell.”

The program has been a runaway success, according to Batavia MainStreet Boardwalk Shop Manager Jamie Saam. Saam, who has managed the boardwalk since its inception, has seen 11 of the 18 past participants go on to open their own spaces, with one more coming soon. She’s also consulted with other community development organizations in cities like Berwyn and Utica to help them implement the concept.

“It has completely exceeded our expectations,” she notes. “These shop owners become ingrained in our PETS & FAMILY AUGUST 2022

community and they are seeing repeat customers. On the Boardwalk’s opening day, three people came up to me and said, ‘I’m going to buy something from every one of these businesses today.’”

The shops offer a wide variety to customers. Charcuterie Studio provides sustenance in the form of meat and cheese spreads while Wild West’s specialty is Scandinavian breads and baked goods.

At Arlo.Hendrix, shoppers can find baby clothes, books and other accessories.

Small-batch pottery pieces such as vases and mugs are available at Dirty Clay & Co. and macrame wall hangings, wine bottle holders and more festoon the walls of Earth Knots. Then there’s the shop outside of which stood two eager 12-year-old patrons one recent morning. As Saam recalls it, the boys could hardly wait for it to open.

With displays filled with taffy, caramels, chocolates and lollipops, The Candy Stop is the pride of the Peterson family.

“My mom’s fondest memory is of her grandmother taking her to a Polish deli and giving her $1 to spend on candy once a week,” says Bolingbrook resident Annemarie Peterson of the inspiration behind the business.

This intention to further bolster the community and its retail footprint is precisely what Saam and other community leaders had hoped for when bringing the program to fruition — and by all accounts, it’s exactly what they have in the Batavia Boardwalk Shops.

Dear Jane: Great question. Colon cancer can affect anyone, regardless of family history. Everyone over age 45 should get a colonoscopy. If you have family history you should start at age 40 or 10 to 15 years before the youngest relative with a problem. Screening helps reduce risk.

Dear Kristen: Yes, food intolerances to lactose, sucrose and fructose are common, so you may need to avoid those. We have tests in the office for that. The symptoms of IBS and food allergies are often similar, so testing for food allergies is reasonable. We can test for that, too. recently talked with a friend who had me design a landscape for her backyard a few years ago. She had purchased a house and with it came an old, overgrown, decorative pond that took up over half of the yard, along with a bunch of random plantings that made no sense.

She had small children and didn’t feel the pond would be safe. I suggested filling in the pond, relocating the existing good plants, adding some fun new plants for birds and butterflies, and turning most of her backyard back to lawn so the kids had a safe place to play.

says that the main reason that they think it’s been so smooth is that they had a design plan and stuck to it, and it was working. They haven’t had to stress about plants or how to keep things healthy. They followed the plan, and everything was doing what it was supposed to. I loved hearing the feedback and was so glad that I could make their yard one less thing to stress about; instead, it was a respite for them and their children during the pandemic. It validated my career choice as well as gave me something to think about with regards to designing!

When I saw her recently, she told me how much they were enjoying their yard and that it was just about zero maintenance for them (and what maintenance they had, her husband was enjoying the tasks). She

them to do? My guess is less than 20%. Sometimes we forget that plants are living things and will do what they want, when they want. Trying to change that is a lesson in futility that also includes excessive pruning, lots of extra watering or even death. Why spend your budget replacing plants that don’t succeed when you could have a plan to work from that will pretty much guarantee “right plant, right spot” AND your successes in the garden?

A landscape design is not a luxury — it’s a necessity.

No matter the size of the project, it’s an organized plan that will help you shape your landscape into something that is easy for you to keep up, gives you color at different times (because that is a good designer’s specialty!), and is low maintenance!

Plants that are chosen randomly or not planned for will struggle and become something that you dislike over time. Plants chosen because the “landscaper” was the “cheapest and first available” will disappoint you … and possibly again when you can’t find that landscaper when you need help because the plants flamed out after a week. (Our industry has a huge problem with miseducation and accountability … that’s a story for another time …)

Why not plan for the future and choose plants that will grow and thrive with little intervention?

I have 30 years of experience dealing with plants in our local landscapes. I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen them at their best and their worst … and usually it’s the worst when there is no rhyme or reason to the garden. Even small spaces should be planned so that you get

the most bang for your buck! A good design helps keep some of the bug and disease issues of plants out of your yard so you can reduce chemical use.

A good design helps you select plants that attract pollinators and contributes positively to your ecosystem.

Let us grow them into the garden of your dreams.

We are fortunate that the Chicagoland area has many good plant people — whether it’s experts in trees, shrubs, perennials, natives or even houseplants! A good plant person knows what plants are on the “no” list or what will grow in your situation. A good plant person will help you pick the PERFECT plant(s) for your yard and make sure you are successful. Find your plant person ... and become BFFs so you can have a gloriously planned landscape that will reward you with happy plants for many years. We would love to be your BFF plant people!

his is a popular time of year to take a vacation. If you are like my family, we find ourselves working so hard that vacation is an important respite too precious to not go well. If you are enjoying this article as part of your leisure reading while on vacation, we hope all is going exactly as you planned and that your spirit, body and relationships are getting recharged.

Ironically, many people put more effort into planning their vacation than they do into planning for their retirement. If your goal is that your lifestyle in

retirement echo your best vacations, it’s important to plan for what you want and to periodically validate your progress in meetings with your financial advisor. Important elements to include in your plan include knowing when you can retire and not outliving your money. Let’s briefly examine both.  KNOW WHEN YOU CAN RETIRE Chances are when you contemplate when you will retire, the first thought that may come to mind is that “people retire at age 65.” This may or may not be a proper target for you. To find out, your best strategy is to have a dynamic, comprehensive

financial plan and to revisit it periodically with a competent financial advisor. No two people are exactly alike, and you deserve a customized plan. If you don’t yet have a personalized plan, there are a couple of guidelines to keep in mind.

Assuming that it is still around at your retirement, it’s highly doubtful that your Social Security Retirement Benefit is going to generate enough income for you to survive on. You also need to understand when you can start drawing on this benefit. (Hint: It’s not age 65.) Here is the current schedule:

At best, it should subsidize your personal savings/investments. Your primary source of retirement income will most likely be your personal retirement savings/investments.

The amount you’ll need to accumulate prior to retiring will depend on several key factors including your age, lifestyle, health and anticipated longevity. Hence the importance of a comprehensive plan.

Beware the urge to retire too early.

For many of us, our greatest earnings from work occur after age 50 and well into our 60s. Switching from a healthy income stream to having to then live off of your retirement savings is a significant shift and should be done only after very careful review with competent counsel.  DON’T OUTLIVE YOUR MONEY There are few nightmares more frightening than running out of money in retirement and becoming financially destitute. The thought of having to find gainful employment when you are in your late 70s or 80s causes more than a few retirees to not sleep well. This is not a position you want to be in.

Average life expectancies for people today hover around 85 years of age, and thanks to ongoing advances in medical science are expected to continue to extend out. Remember that an average life expectancy of age 85 means that half of us will die prior to achieving that age while the other half of us will live beyond that point. With that in mind, it seems wise to plan on still being around

to enjoy your life and to be able to pay your bills into your 90s.

How can you make your retirement savings last longer than you will? Here are a few ways to put the odds in your favor: • Properly allocate your retirement portfolio with enough equities to allow you to keep pace with inflation plus to withdraw up to 4% per year to live on.

• We suggest you have a portion of your retirement savings in a financial asset that will provide a guaranteed income stream for your life. This financial safety net can be a welcome friend during uncertain markets.

• Plan for the very real costs of longterm care for your spouse and for yourself. Once you reach age 65, incurring long-term care expenses during your life are a probability, not a possibility, and you will want to plan accordingly.

• If suitable for your individual situation, we suggest having your investments in an investment advisory account rather than a brokerage account. This would require your financial advisor to follow the fiduciary standard and there can be comfort in knowing that she/he is required to put your best interest before their own.

rom the crisp green grass beneath one’s shoes to the still-cool morning air under a brilliant blue sky, there’s something pretty special about stepping out on Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles.

The course is like a small to-do list, with each hole presenting obstacles that are checked off before scooping up the ball and walking to the next hole.

For those seeking a challenge, there’s the opportunity to best one’s score from the previous visit, or perhaps beat out an opponent in a friendly competition. The course is just long enough to enjoy the walk, and take time to catch up on life with your fellow players in between putts and swings.

As assistant golf manager for the St. Charles Park District’s course, Bill Ogiego sees every day how players come together from all walks of life for the opportunity to spend time together and enjoy the game.

“Where else can you go for some recreation with the people you have fun spending time with, while getting in your steps for the day and enjoying the beautiful

surroundings?” Ogiego says.

While the game is central, it’s just a part of the experience, he explains. “When we talk about ‘going golfing’ at Pottawatomie, we talk about four things: camaraderie, exercise, beautiful scenery and then the game of golf,” Ogiego says.

Located in Pottawatomie Park, the 9-hole course is nestled along the Fox River, creating a beautiful setting.

The course is a certified Audubon Sanctuary, where native birds as well as those migrating will stop for a rest, finding shade, water and perhaps a meal in the water too.

One of the appeals to golf is the opportunity to welcome players of all ages, from young ones learning with parents and grandparents to those who find the game the perfect way to stay active. “We have season pass holders as young as 7 years old and those over 90 years old,” Ogiego notes.

The Park District offers varying levels of passes, including season, weekday and even punch cards

that can be used for an individual or a group. The Park District aims to keep fees affordable to residents and nonresidents. There are Twilight Golf discounts, and Mondays are Senior Golf Days, where those ages 60 and older can play 9 holes for $15 per person, a great opportunity for singles, couples and even grandparents with their grandchildren.

Ogiego says golf is a great sport for generations to bond, and to make new friends. “We have players who were paired up once last year as walk-on singles who are now playing together twice a week,” Ogiego says. “We have husbands and wives who play together, siblings, parents and their children, neighborhood groups and of course our men’s leagues and women’s leagues.”

A visit to Pottawatomie can easily fit into one’s schedule, leaving plenty of time for the grandchildren to enjoy time in the park or friends to keep the fun going over a postgame meal.

“We have players who have been friends for more than 50 years who come out and still enjoy a game together,” Ogiego says.

The annual Elburn Days Festival, which is the largest fundraising event for Elburn Lions Club, is scheduled Aug. 19-21 at Lions Park.

“Every dime goes to help charities,” says Stacy Groesch, event coordinator for the Elburn Lions Club. “These are all volunteers so when you come to Elburn Days to have a good time, you are helping the charities.”

This year’s theme is “Elburn Lions Soar to the Skies for Eyes,” so without giving away anything, Groesch hints

attendees should look for aerial surprises amongst the regularly scheduled fun —carnival rides, mud volleyball, truck and tractor pulls, 4-H activities and much more.

What’s more is that many of the activities and events at the festival are provided free of charge. “It’s great to offer family fun that’s affordable,” Groesch says.

“While you’re paying for carnival rides and food, there’s plenty of opportunities to enjoy the festival without having to spend any money, and when you do, you know it’s all going back to the Lions Club and going to help others.”

Things have certainly changed in the world since the early years of the festival in the 1930s, and that includes some of the best prizes. While one lucky

attendee, who had just had electricity installed at their home, won an RCA Radiola Model 80 radio at one of the first Elburn Days festivals, the prizes are much more extravagant today. Festivalgoers will have a variety of fun and daring carnival rides to get their thrills on and plenty of great food options. In addition to sweet corn, hot dogs, brats, burgers, hot pretzels, ice cream, root beer floats and more, Lion Phil Gladd’s famous pulled pork sandwiches once again will have hungry attendees licking their fingers.

Artist OF THE MONTH

LINDSEY WHITE The Tri-Cities are booming with arts and artists — perhaps nowhere more vibrantly than Batavia’s Water Street Studios, which hosts events, galleries and up to 25 artists in residence. Each month, Kane County Magazine and Water Street Studios are partnering to highlight artists and their work.

indsey White is a student of her practice.

This is true in that she is always progressing as an artist — and in the more literal sense, as she is currently studying toward her degree in art education with an emphasis on art therapy.

“My art is intended to be reminiscent of children’s book illustrations and offer a reminder that everyone has an inner child,” says White, who has been a gallery assistant at Water Street Studios since July 2021.

Her whimsical, colorful illustrations explore surrealism, relying mainly on acrylic and colored pencil. White finds inspiration in films, music and children’s books, she says.

Last year, she completed a portfolio for her Advanced Placement Art class, an accelerated high school course that is often taken for college credit. White’s portfolio received a top score.

“Challenging my skill, process, and efficiency, this series of work forced me to stop using the excuse ‘I have art block’ and spend the time creating works of art I could be proud of,” White notes. “I feel as though my 10 final pieces I had submitted represented my growth as an artist, as it really solidified my style and strengthened my passion for illustration.”

The past year has brought the launch of her website, which offers the option to purchase her artwork. “Art has always been part of my life, but high school is when I began to take it more seriously,” she says.

White’s beliefs about art translate well to her current studies.

“I believe that creating art can be therapeutic in the sense that it forges a connection between the artist’s mind and their body,” she says. “Art can be healing and allows the creator to express their thoughts, feelings, and idea in a physical form.”

When is it time to stand up and make your voice heard — even if people might not agree with your message? That’s the story behind the timely and entertaining “Dress Coded” by Carrie Firestone. After two years of watching other girls be anxious and humiliated over her middle school’s strict dress code policies for girls, eighth grader Molly Frost decides she has had enough. It all starts when Molly’s classmate Olivia becomes a social pariah for causing the school to cancel their class camping trip. Why? Because Olivia wore a tank top, which is against the dress code. This is only one in a long saga of incidents. It’s practically impossible to find shorts long enough for the school’s strict length rule, so some girls wear pants in 100-degree weather. Others become self-conscious and uncomfortable in their clothes because of the rules. But boys never get dress coded at all. It’s unfair and it’s damaging girls’ mental health, so Molly starts a podcast where girls can share their stories. The podcast becomes a movement that affects the entire community. Readers age 9 and up will enjoy the inspiring story of a budding activist finding her voice and using it to help others.

“The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller takes the familiar Greek myth and adds a captivating modern interpretation. Achilles is strong, swift, beautiful and enchanting to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance, Achilles and Patroclus forge an inseparable bond despite risking wrath. When they learn Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece lay siege to Troy.

Achilles joins the cause, and Patroclus follows, unaware the cruel fates will test them both as never before — and demand a sacrifice. The magic trick this book pulls is that most readers know how the story ends. The phrase “Achilles heels” is part of our day-to-day lives thousands of years later. Fans of character-driven, lyrical novels about fate and tragic romance will find Miller’s version impossible to put down.
