CHARLES – Master Chu Ma’s Hapkido-based Traditional Martial Arts Center relocated to a new location Feb.1, and also has a new name – Four Elements Traditional School of Martial Arts. The new school is at 2015 Dean St., Suite 7B, located east of Randall Road. The training facility has expanded to 4,000 square feet and features structural improvements, such as a new floor, additional heavy bags, large mirrors and two refurbished

dressing rooms. Ma’s program focuses on empowering students to defend themselves through a combination of joint locks, throws and traditional Korean-style punches and kicks. Some additional programs also have been added. Classes include cardio kick-boxing; a women’s self-defense class; traditional weapons classes; and private lessons. Waubonsee college seeks nominees for awards KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – Nominations are being sought for Waubonsee Community College’s 2014 Distinguished Contributor and Distinguished Alumnus awards. The Distinguished Contributor Award annually honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions or given exemplary support to Waubonsee Community College. A distinguished contributor is someone who has supported the general operation of the college in either a personal or professional capacity and has contributed to the overall growth and expansion of the college’s mission. The nominee’s commitment may have enhanced a program, operation and/or future development of the college with which such results would not have occurred without the effort. The college staff, community residents and officials or community college leaders must also recognize the person as having made an extraor-

dinary commitment to promote the college and its mission. The nominee must have documented evidence of contributions to the community and/ or the educational community. Employees and retirees of Waubonsee Community College are not eligible to receive the award. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is an award for outstanding graduates of Waubonsee Community College. It honors a graduate who shows evidence of personal/professional support for the college, its growth, development and mission. The individual must have documented evidence of a distinguished record in his or her chosen profession and/ or occupation; documented evidence of contributions and service to his or her community; and have demonstrated a continued interest in lifelong education. 8NEIGHBORS BRIEFS Beautification committee recruiting gardeners for Saturday planting

Locals to be honored at Daughters of the American Revolution luncheon

GENEVA – The Geneva Beautification Committee is recruiting gardeners of all ages to join in the garden preparation and second planting of the season. New volunteers should report to the corner of South Third and James streets, in front of the Geneva Post Office, at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Volunteers will be given a garden location that could use help. Volunteers who have already been assigned to a garden can report directly to their garden and begin planting the flowers that have been delivered to their area. Volunteers are asked to bring garden gloves, pruning shears, rakes, brooms, shovels and trowels. Since the flowers enjoy a slight sprinkling of showers, the planting will continue unless there is a thunderstorm. If rain delays the planting, the rain date is Sunday, May 18, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Anyone interested in helping is welcome The Geneva Beautification Committee consists of individuals, families, organizations and businesses that adopt, plant and maintain gardens in Geneva’s business district. ST. CHARLES – Jayne Cates and Pam Otto are being recognized by the national Daughters of the American Revolution for their work in community service and history. The two women will be honored by the local Elias Kent Kane chapter at a National Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Elgin Country Club, 2575 Weld Road, Elgin. Cates, an accomplished genealogist, will be receiving the National History Award for her work in authoring “Revolutionary Soldiers of Illinois.” Written in conjunction with the Illinois State Genealogy Society, the local DAR chapter is working to donate the book to all area high schools and public libraries. Otto will be presented the National Conservation Award for her dedication to the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, in addition to spearheading a variety of nature programs throughout the area.
