t’s the holiday season, a time of year where big meals take center stage. But don’t just ill your holiday plate with turkey, gravy and cranberry sauce — pitch in and try your skills in the kitchen. Cooking is about more than just whipping up some yummy food. While you’re having fun making a mess in the kitchen, you’re also learning about safety and following directions, and you’re brushing up on your math skills (whether you like it or not).

With the help of an adult, you can whip up this easy recipe:

Your shopping list: n 1 pie crust (you can buy it frozen, or you can

a

make it from scratch if you have a recipe) n 1 can of pumpkin puree (15 ounces) n 1 can of sweetened condensed milk (12 ounces) n Whipped cream n 2 eggs n 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon n ? teaspoon ground ginger n 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg n ? teaspoon salt

ask an adult to preheat

the oven to 425 degrees.

get a big bowl and mix the pumpkin puree, the sweetened condensed milk and the eggs. Then measure each of the spices (salt, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg) and add those to the mix. Stir.

prepare your pie crust.

pour the batter carefully into the crust, without spilling it.

If it was frozen, follow the instructions on the package for defrosting. If you are making one from scratch, follow the steps in the recipe. Once you have a crust ready to go in a baking tin, pour the pie mixture into the center of the crust, then even it out across the crust.

it’s cooking time! Have an adult help you place the pie in the oven (use your oven mitts). Bake the pie at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Then cool the oven down to 350, and bake another 45 minutes.

5

when do you know your pie is done? When

a fork or knife can be inserted in the center of it and comes out clean, and there is a nice brown color (not burned) to your crust.

6

Let it cool. Put it in a

safe place for a couple of hours until the pie reaches room temperature.

7

serve! Cut the pie into

slices, and serve on festive plates. Offer your guests whipped cream they can put on top of their pie.
