editorial@kcchronicle.com ELBURN – The Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn is hosting its annual Wildlife Photo Contest. Participants are asked to submit photos of wildlife native to Illinois for a chance to be featured in the wildlife center’s calendar. “We started this contest because we started making a calendar and wanted our supporters to be included in the calendar,” Fox Valley Wildlife Center board President Andrea Krueger said. “We put one of each person who submits a picture into the calendar for the next year.” Each photo submitted will go through a judging process that will select five winners. First place wins five calendars for the next year; second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place winners will receive three calendars each. Professional artists will serve as judges. “Beth Graham runs the photo contest and she finds an art shop or a couple of different artists. We like to get a few different opinions,” Krueger said. Graham of Geneva joined the photo contest almost a decade ago. “I actually worked at the Proud Fox Gallery [of Geneva] years ago and Andrea was looking for someone to frame the winner,” Graham said. “That’s kind of how I got involved with the wildlife center. Even though I don’t frame art anymore, I still work with the photo contest and [the] Proud Fox Gallery will still frame the winning photo.” Each photo submitted will be judged on various factors, including composition, photo skill set and subject matter.
“Last year, we had a little possum in a tree with berries and it was really popular,” she said. “It was so popular that we were even getting calls of people who wanted to purchase the photo, so that was great to see.” Submitted photos must have no humans in the photo, only wildlife native to the state of Illinois, from Canada geese to insects. There cannot be any domestic animals, so no submitting photos of pets. Photos must be 8 by 10 inches and cannot be digitally altered. Only amateur photographers can submit photos. It costs $10 to submit each photo, up to five photos. The contest closes Feb. 17, and judg-

ing takes place soon after. It just takes a few weeks to pick a winner, Krueger said. “I call the winners just before our dinner auction and all the winners and participants are featured at our dinner auction, which is March 18,” Krueger said. Fundraisers such as the calendar and photo contest are integral to the Fox Valley Wildlife Center, which relies entirely on donations. “The money helps a lot,” Krueger said. “The money from the photo contest helps to benefit all of the baby animals we are inundated with in the springtime and all the injured adult animals that come into our hospital.”
