As the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased that you have picked up a copy of our annual Chamber & Community Guide and hope that you will find it to be a valuable resource. Since 1947, the Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce has been dedicated to serving the Princeton, Illinois area businesses and community. Chamber Benefits & Services

A

Chamber of Commerce exists to support business, strengthen the local economy, and enhance the quality of life in the community it serves. Our Chamber proudly fulfills that role by being both an advocate for our members and a connector for our community.

Located in the Prouty-Zearing Community Building, the Chamber serves as a trusted clearinghouse of information—providing business referrals, visitor assistance, and up-to-date knowledge about local resources, events, and opportunities. We offer numerous networking and educational programs each year, creating meaningful connections that help businesses grow and thrive.

Our highly successful Chamber Gift Card Program keeps tens of thousands of dollars circulating locally, directly benefiting our small businesses. Members gain visibility through our website, an annual Chamber & Community Guide seen by thousands, and robust marketing support through a social

media following of 8,000+ and growing. Our e-blast communication system reaches nearly 1,000 unique subscribers and delivers over 400 messages annually highlighting Chamber initiatives, events, fundraisers, and important member announcements.

The Chamber organizes and maintains the community calendar of events for Princeton, works on economic development initiatives with the City, and provides connectivity to local, state, and national leaders—including engagement with state and U.S. Chambers and meetings with local legislators. We invest in community pride through efforts like the Main Street Flower Pot Program and support future generations through established programs such as the Career, Job & Volunteer Fair and Salute to Ag. These initiatives educate students about local careers and opportunities, connect them to leaders, and hopefully inspire their futures. Agriculture is the lifeblood of our economy and region which is why we provide scholarships for students pursuing careers in agriculture through our

Salute to Ag initiative.

Each year, the Chamber also hosts a highly successful Chamber Classic Golf Outing, with proceeds funding our Building Improvement Grant Program. These grants directly impact Chamber member businesses by incentivizing private investment and helping to keep buildings in our community vibrant and well maintained.

Beyond programs and services, the Chamber is deeply involved throughout the community.

We promote and advertise Princeton, champion small businesses and local dining, and host signature retail events that draw visitors from near and far. We are proud to help bring beloved community traditions to life, including Princeton’s Fourth of July Festivities, numerous Christmas events, and many other celebrations that make Princeton a welcoming place to live, work, and visit!

Simply put, our Chamber is a partner, promoter, and advocate—working year-round to support our members, strengthen our economy, and build a thriving community for all!

Networking & Educational Opportunities n BUSINESS AFTER HOURS with the Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce takes place the third Thursday of each month (except December) from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and is hosted by a different Chamber member each month. No RSVP is needed to attend. The lottery to host Business After Hours for the following year always takes place each year at September’s Business After Hours. n MORNING MINGLE with the Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce takes place every other month on the first Tuesday from 7:30 am to 9:00 am at the Prouty-Zearing Community Building. Breakfast is provided by a gracious sponsor. No RSVP is needed to attend. n LUNCH & LEARN opportunities take place quarterly on the first Friday of the month from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. There may be a cost for lunch and an RSVP is needed.

n NEW MEMBER SHOWCASE: Through a strong relationship with Heartland Bank & Trust Company, new Chamber members are invited to spotlight their business at an open-house style event. Participants can set up a table, bring their best elevator pitch, and connect with fellow members, businesses, and community leaders.

These events provide a welcoming way to introduce new organizations, teams, products, and services while networking and building relationships. We sincerely thank Heartland Bank for their continued support and partnership in making these opportunities possible! n ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Through strong partnerships with neighboring Chambers in LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa, Mendota, and Streator, we leverage shared resources to bring national speakers and high-quality learning opportunities to our members - offerings that a single Chamber could not provide alone. This regional collaboration has allowed us to

host one to two joint educational events each year, elevating the value of Chamber membership across the region! n CAREER, JOB, & VOLUNTEER FAIR: Held each April in the Princeton High School gymnasium, the Chamber’s Career, Job, & Volunteer Fair connects students with the many opportunities available right here in our area. Local employers, colleges, military representatives, and community organizations come together to educate and inspire students as they explore careers, jobs, service hours, available scholarships, potential internship opportunities, and ways to get involved close to home. We welcome both junior high and high school students from across Bureau County. This growing event encourages early curiosity, meaningful connections, and future-focused conversations. In just a few short years, the fair has expanded to welcome more than 500 students on the day of the fair - building pathways from the classroom to careers, service, and community!

Your visit to Princeton is appreciated. We pride ourselves on being a small Midwestern community that still holds basic values at heart. We believe there is a commitment to each other, to our families, and to our guests, that Princeton is a special place, one that takes pride in the day-today quality of living. We know our community members by first name. We greet each other with a smile and a wave. Princeton has been my home, my parents’ home, and my grandparents’ home.

Actually, my family’s roots in Princeton go back six generations, and go forward two more!

So, what makes Princeton stand out from other small communities? There are so many things, but if I had to name just one, it is our rich history directly tied to our roots in agriculture. Looking around, north, south, east, and west of the city, you will see some of the most productive, dark, rich soil in Illinois. Farm land that, for decades, has been carefully tilled, planted, cultivated, and harvested, yielding abundant crops of corn and soybeans.

Yes, our roots do grow deep. And with it, a pride that we take in keeping our community prosperous and energized, respecting our past and embracing our future. You’ll feel it as you stroll our sidewalks, bicycle our streets, and explore our parks, historic sites, and two business districts.

We are glad you’re here! Join us as we grow, join us as we continue to prosper, join us as we enjoy a quality of life seldom equaled. As I often say, it’s the ‘little things’ that set us apart.

History The early settlement of Princeton began with settlers in the 1830s from New England and, later, the Mid-Atlantic states, who traveled west seeking good farmland. Princeton proved to be an ideal location because the land was an undulating, mostly treeless, grasscovered plain. In addition, the soil was fertile and well-drained. Amongst other miscellaneous shops, early industry in Princeton also included several brick-making factories, a tannery, a few flour mills, a buggy and cart factory, several agricultural businesses, and a sealing wax factory, which is still in operation after 118 years.

It was common for new settlers to come in groups to ensure congenial neighbors, schools, and religious affiliations. The Hampshire Colony is believed to have been the first of these organizations to settle in Northern Illinois. The settlers arrived in Princeton in 1831, the same year the city was surveyed, and a rough draft was laid out. They soon built the Hampshire Colony Congregational Church and employed as one of its earliest pastors, Owen Lovejoy, the well-known abolitionist. In addition,

Reverend Lovejoy used his own home to hide runaway slaves, and in 1854, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. Before and during the Civil War, Princeton became an important station on the Underground Railroad. Reverend Lovejoy’s home is open for tours by appointment – call 815.879.9151 for more information.

Shortly before the Civil War broke out, the citizens were able to convince the Burlington Railroad to lay its rails within a mile north of the city. Within a few years, the community had expanded its Main Street to meet the railroad, and this action indeed benefited the community and ensured its future growth. It now maintains a north and south end business district operating in beautiful historic buildings.

Those early settlers in Princeton thrived on the rich prairie, and many became very wealthy. Thus, they were able to contribute in many ways to the growth and development of the community. As they retired and passed their farmland to the next generation, it became a tradition for retirees move into town and PRINCETON AREA CHAMBER OFtoCOMMERCE

build a grand home for their retirement years. Many of these large, beautiful homes remain and are lovingly cared for by today’s residents.

The Bureau County Historical Society is an outgrowth of the Old Settlers Meeting first held in Princeton’s Converse Hall on South Main Street on January 12, 1865. The Early Settlers Society of Bureau County was proposed as a permanent organization in September 1867, and members were encouraged to save items for use in a future museum.

A resolution was adopted at the 26th Annual Meeting in 1911 to officially create the Bureau County Historical Society. The early Settlers Society disbanded in 1920 and united with the Bureau County Historical Society.

The Society was given space in the new Bureau County Courthouse for a museum where exhibits were on display from 1938 to 1948.

In 1946, the Clark Norris home was bequeathed to the Historical Society by Grace Clark Norris, daughter of Sam and Ann Clark, who built their beautiful home in 1900. The Historical Society moved into the mansion in 1948.

The Bureau County History Center was formed in 2023.

The History Center campus includes the Clark Norris Home, built in 1900, the Newell Bryant Museum, built in 1852, and the Sash Stalter Matson Building, formerly known as the Matson Public Library, built in 1912.

Today, the History Center maintains an extensive collection of photographs taken by H.W. Immke (18661923) and the Bill Lamb Collection with images taken throughout the 20th century.

They also operate a Research Library with local history books, school and military records, town histories, family files, plat maps, and directories.

hroughout the year, Princeton is a hub of activity and will give you endless reasons to visit!

Each year, the Bureau County Homestead Festival, a celebration of Owen Lovejoy’s remarkable place in history, is held the weekend after Labor Day every September.

Festival activities boast live music, Princeton Walk of Fame dedication in front of the Apollo Theater, a themed window display contest, museum tours, horse-drawn carriage rides, an arts and crafts show, a BBQ rib cookoff, a 5K race, class reunions, a car show, and the everso popular Homestead Festival parade!

Through the summer, Festival 56, our professional theater group, provides a wonderful range of theatrical productions from comedies and musicals to dramas, as well as Shakespeare in the Park performances on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings.

The Main Street Summer Concert Series, made possible by Princeton Tourism, is excuse enough to look forward to warm, sunny days!

Kicking off in June, admission is always free thanks to local businesses who sponsor the series, and the local food and beverage vendors will have you coming back for more.

Take the Trolley

There is nothing better than the atmosphere and sense of community felt while attending a Friday evening Street Concert on our historic South Main Street!

In July, bicyclists at all skill levels look forward to the annual Z Tour Bike Ride to benefit Zearing Child Enrichment Center. Experience picturesque Princeton and rural Bureau County from a two-wheeled perspective.

This popular cycling event provides multiple routes ranging from ten to one hundred miles.

Wrap up summer at the end of August with a trip to the Bureau County Fair, one of the longest running county fairs in the state of Illinois!

In October, Shadows of the Blue and Gray will celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Also, one of the longest running Civil War reenactments in the state! This annual event offers a chance for families to see how Civil War soldiers lived and fought. A narrated mock battle will be performed on both Saturday and Sunday. Visitors will be able to watch infantry, cavalry, and artillery perform their duties as well as tour the campgrounds.

The organization will again offer free School

Day on Friday where all local private, public, and home schools are encouraged to attend.

And our events calendar does not slow down there! The Chamber of Commerce offers many community-centered events as well as shopping promotions to encourage support of our small businesses leading up to Christmas. In the Fall, the Chamber hosts its most popular shopping event of the year, Witches Night Out - which draws thousands of shoppers from near and far to experience late night shopping on our historic Main Street! This event celebrated its 10th year in 2025 and always takes place on a Friday evening in early October. This event now kicks off a weekend of Fall fun in Princeton with family fun happening all day Saturday made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Chamber, Princeton Tourism, and the Bureau County Fair. Saturday events include the annual Halloween Parade, trick-or-treating on Main Street, a performance by the Hocus Pocus Hags, a Halloween themed movie, trunk-or-treat, and so much more! And don’t miss Princeton Tourism’s annual Oktoberfest celebration at Rotary Park happening in early Fall!

reated in 1946, the Princeton Park District maintains over 200 acres of parks, the Bureau County Metro Center, and the outdoor Alexander Swimming Pool.

ZEARING PARK Zearing Park is a hub of action from March to November. Baseball and soccer abound at the sprawling 72acre park on the southeast corner of Princeton.

CITY COUNTY PARK City County Park is a 65-acre park nestled throughout a natural woodland setting just north of town offering barbecue areas, log cabin shelter, playground, ball field, and restrooms. Covered Bridges

RED COVERED BRIDGE

CAPTAIN SWIFT BRIDGE

The Red Covered Bridge is a wooden, covered bridge that runs over Big Bureau Creek north of Princeton in Dover Township, Bureau County, Illinois. It was originally built in 1863, at a cost of $3,148.57.

The 149-foot (45 m) span is one of five remaining covered bridges in Illinois, and it is still open to traffic, though now covered with CCTV cameras. The bridge was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1975.

Located one mile west of Princeton. Built in 2006, the bridge derives its strength from its Burr arch design, an idea patented by Theodore Burr of New York in 1804. Made entirely of wood using 1800s concepts, the Captain Swift Covered Bridge is the only two-lane covered bridge in Illinois. It has a 16’-3” vertical clearance, a 28-foot minimum roadway width and a 128’ span over Big Bureau Creek.

Flags of Freedom

F

lags of Freedom was co-founded

by Jack Scott and Harry Burrows with the original committee forming in 2004. At its conception, this committee was co-chaired by both Mr. Scott and Tom Root, who at the time was the City of Princeton’s Police Chief as well as a noncommissioned officer in the United States Army. Their vision was to create a unique and significant memorial in honor of all veterans and their families. It was established that the committee would set out to raise enough money to purchase four large flags and poles and erect them in the four corners of the Interstate 80 & Route 26 interchange at the exit to Princeton - Exit #56. The committee raised over $320,000.00 through donations and various fundraising events. The flags and poles were then purchased and professionally installed. The Flags of Freedom were officially dedicated on September 10th, 2005, in a ceremony that was attended by over 2,500 people including many local and state dignitaries, as well as several current and

past members of the United States Armed Forces.

Currently, the Flags of Freedom are maintained by a committee of 25 members. The board’s current officers include: Chairman - Rodney Johnson | Co-Chairman - Steve Taylor | Secretary - Terry Johnson | Treasurer - Bryce Nyman | Member-at-Large Brad Oeder Each flag measures 30-foot x 60-foot and are hung from 153-foot poles. Each flag weighs 100 lbs (dry). The wind must be below 8 miles an hour to lower or raise the flags for the safety of those volunteers. The flags can act like a large sail and lift men off the ground when unfurling them or capturing them on the way down. The flags fly 365 days a year unless there is inclement weather or maintenance on the pole systems being completed.

Many gracious supporters who believe passionately in the cause purchase a flag on

an annual basis, but the initiative is primarily funded through many donations and various fundraisers throughout each year. Because of Illinois’ extreme weather, 12-16 flags are needed every year, each flag costing $2,000.00. Anyone can visit their website at flagsoffreedomi80. org to learn more about this worthy cause or donate to help ‘KEEP THE FLAGS FLYING’!

These flags are a great tribute to our veterans, past, present, and future, and the only dedication of its kind in the entire United States. These flags mean a lot to our community and our country, and we hope you will visit Princeton to see this magnificent and proud display of patriotism!!!

Festival 56 is a professional theater, run by the Princeton Theater Group, located at the Grace Theater in Princeton. Princeton Public Library By adoption of an ordinance on April 18, 1885, a donation of $11,862.67 made to the City of Princeton by the last will of Nehemiah Matson for the purpose of establishing a free public library was accepted by the city council in trust. On February 27, 1886, the first Board of Directors of Matson Public Library was confirmed by the city council and the library opened its doors.

The first meeting of the new Board of Directors took place on March 10, 1886 and for the next three years, the Nehemiah Matson fund was held as an investment until a location for the library was decided upon and secured. After a lengthy process, it was decided that the first library was to be located in the building at what is now 529 South Main Street in

Princeton, IL. In 1890, we were already expanding.

The Matson Public Library located on South Main Street in Princeton was first opened for use by the public.

It remained in use for 22 years. In the summer of 1912, the Chicago architectural firm of Patton & Miller was contracted to begin work on the permanent library facility in the main square of Princeton. A year later, the new facility was opened to the public.

94 years later, a city-wide referendum was passed to allow construction to begin on a new, 28,000 square foot facility at 698 East Peru Street. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in August 2007 when the new facility was given to the people of Princeton.

Bureau County Genealogical Society Come visit this free genealogical library. Regular hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and the first Saturday of each month during the same hours. This family history library contains a large collection of historical Bureau County records consisting of obituaries, burial locations, marriage records, historical plat maps, county and town histories, county newspapers, farm records, and so much more. If desired, an experienced volunteer will assist you in using its vast collection of Bureau County records to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

Be sure to check out their website, www.bcgenealogy.org, for helpful tips on how to get started on your ancestry journey.

The library has programs each month on the fourth Thursday at 7:00 pm. The final two months are combined into one program on the first Thursday following Thanksgiving. All programs are free and open to the public and feature genealogical or historical topics. Many visitors have said this is perhaps the best county genealogical library they have ever visited.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY This community initiative strengthens safety, understanding, and inclusion for neighbors living with dementia and supports their caregivers. Through education, caregiver support, trained dementia-friendly businesses, and partnerships with law enforcement for tracking at-risk individuals, the organization helps residents remain independent and supported. Its leadership connects Princeton and surrounding communities to a network committed to informed care.

FREEDOM HOUSE Freedom House, Inc. has been a lifeline for survivors of domestic and sexual violence for more than 42 years. Providing free, confidential crisis response, shelter, advocacy, counseling, and prevention education, it strengthens safety across our region. Through partnerships and compassionate care, Freedom House offers hope, healing, and dignity to individuals and families in crisis locally.

GATEWAY SERVICES Gateway Services empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Bureau, Marshall, and Putnam counties. For 55 years, it has strengthened independence through residential supports, employment services, counseling, transportation, and advocacy. By enriching lives and expanding access to care, Gateway builds communities, supports families, creates opportunity, and ensures every individual can live, work, and thrive.

SECOND STORY TEEN CENTER Second Story Teen Center provides a safe, welcoming space for at-risk youth in Bureau County. Serving teens since 2009, it offers positive after-school programs, meals, transportation, and basic needs support. By fostering connection, skills, and belonging, Second Story reaches thousands of teens each year, strengthening mental health and building brighter futures!
