Upcoming events National Night Out SPRING VALLEY — National Night Out, a crime prevention event, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 at Kirby Park in Spring Valley. The event will feature a Spring Valley Police K-9 team demonstration, free swimming from 5 to 6 p.m., free food, games and giveaways, and public safety demonstrations.

If you do not have access to the website, parade applications will be available at the Chamber of Commerce and at Edward Jones Investments at 200 Ace Road. Lil’ Wranglers Rodeo
PRINCETON — New this year, Homestead Festival parade letters and applications will not be mailed out to previous and potential entries. The letter and application can be found at and printed from the festival’s website at www.homesteadfestival.com. All the information needed to register an entry for the parade is on the website. Anyone who is interested in participating in this year’s Lovejoy Homestead Festival Parade must turn in an application. This would include any organization, church, club, band and class reunion that may want to have an entry in the parade. Parade entries are encouraged to use the theme for this year’s festival which is “It’s Good To Be Home.” There is no entry fee to enter a unit in the parade. The deadline for parade entries is Aug. 27. The parade will step off at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14 on Main Street. PRINCETON — Ride ‘Em cowboy can again be heard at the 158th Bureau County Fair in Princeton this year as the Lil’ Wranglers Rodeo returns at noon Aug. 25 in the goat barn arena. The event is sponsored by Marquis Energy, Central Bank, R & K Grain, Flight Manufacturing, Ag View FS, Albrecht Well Drilling, Kramer Garage Doors, Agri-Energy Resources and Kramer’s Kitchen. This kids contest consists of Stick Horse Barrel Racing for ages 4-6; Chicken Races for ages 2-3, 4-5 and 6-7; Greased Pig Chasing for ages 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14; and Mutton Bustin’ for ages 4-plus with a 75-pound weight limit. Participants can pre-register by downloading forms on the fair’s website at www. Bureaucountyfair.com or by picking up forms at the fair office. Only 200 entries will be accepted, with a limit of 100 participants in the Mutton Bustin’ event. There is a $10 entry fee and parent’s signature required per participant. There is no admission

Bags tournament PRINCETON — The 158th Bureau County Fair will include a bags tournament beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 22. Registration is limited to 32 teams, and will start at 5 p.m., with board assignments when the tourney begins. For preregistration, call Nick Peach at 815-890-0224, with fees of $20 per team. Teams are asked to enter at the west gate, as the tourney is in the infield of the racetrack.
‘Little Women’ auditions HENRY — River Valley Players announces auditions for “Little Women” (the musical), based on Louisa May Alcott’s own family experiences. The show will be presented Oct. 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27. “Little Women” follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. The beloved story of the March sisters is timeless and deals with issues that are as relevant today as when they were written. Now this wonderful literary classic has been brought to life as an exhila-
rating new musical filled with glorious music, and heart. Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears, and lifting of the spirit. This powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope — the sound of young America finding its voice. Auditions will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 and 18. Call backs, if needed, will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 19. Audition will be held at St. Mary’s Community Center, 1031 Second St., Henry. Rehearsals will begin Aug. 26 and will be held on weekday evenings, as well as Sunday afternoons. There may also be Saturday afternoon rehearsals. Most characters will begin with rehearsals two to three times a week. Cast requirements: • Jo March (Mezzo, Belt, age 18-late 20s) a writer, very spirited, strong willed, tomboyish — a very liberal women for her time. • Marmee March (age 4054 alto/mezzo, aristocrat) the girls caring mother, compassionate strong woman. • Meg March (Lyric soprano age 15-27) the eldest and the beauty of the family — a romantic who yearns for more from life than just working as a governess. • Beth March (light soprano)- the second youngest, nervous and shy on the outside but has an inner strength, devoted to duty and social caring for others even at the expense of her health. • Amy March (Soprano, age late teens to 20s) the young-
est, a willful girl who is not content to be just the “baby” of the family, pretentious, spoiled and quite the firecracker. Casted as two roles, one role for age 12 and second role as young adult. • Aunt March (Mezzo Soprano 50-60s) the pretentious, crotchety and difficult matriarch of the March family, widowed, wealthy and willing to try anything to maintain her influence. A good character role. • Theodore “Laurie” Laurence (tenor, age 16–22) charming , best friend to Jo. • Mr. Brook (Baritone/tenor, age 22-30) Laurie’s tutor, shy and awkward, entranced with Meg. • Mr. Lawrence (Baritone, age 55-70) Gruff, opinionated exterior hides a heart of gold. • Professor Baer (Baritone, age 30-40) Jo’s friend and “fatherly” mentor, teacher and suitor. • Mrs. Kirk (non-singing, age 40) runs boarding house. Additional information for auditions: • Please prepare a standard Broadway song that best shows off your range. • Bring sheet music (an accompanist will be provided). • You will be asked to read from the script. • There will not be a dance call for this audition. • You may be asked to sing a song from the show of the character you auditioning for. • A list of all conflicts.
