SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – The Medinah Shrine Club in Addison expects to sell more than 100,000 pounds of Vidalia onions in its annual sale this year. Members will be selling the sweet onions at busy street corners, farmer markets and major restaurants that focus on purchasing local produce. Proceeds of the sale will be used to raise funds for various Shrine operations including special activity clubs and parade units. The annual Vidalia Onion Shriner Sale serves as one of the main fundraisers for the Medinah Shriners. This year’s bags are expected to cost the same as those sold in 2013. A 10-pound bag will sell for $11. Half bags also will be available for $6. Because the onions come directly from the growers’ fields, freshness is guaranteed and expected to last for four to six months. The Medinah Shrine Club will sell Vidalia onions from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 16, 17 and 18 at Len’s Ace Hardware, 30 W. Lake St. in Addison. They also may be available from 9 a.m. to noon at Medinah Shrine Center, 550 N. Shriners Drive. Check medinah.org/onion_ sites.htm for additional times and locations. The Shrine is one of the nation’s largest fraternal bodies. It supports a network of 22 nonprofit children’s hospitals around the country. This medical network helps children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. These kids receive all services in a family-centered environment regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. In the Chicago area, Medinah Shriners efforts help fund the healthcare needs at the Shrine Hospital for Children on Oak Park Avenue. This facility specializes in orthopedics and provides services to children with congenital deformities, problems resulting from orthopedic injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
