Education Notes Freya Block receives ag scholarship PRINCETON – Freya Block of Neponset is a recipient of the 2013 First Choice Agriculture Scholarship from 1st Farm Credit Services. Block, a senior at Kewanee High School, is the daughter of Clinton and Melanie Freya Block Block. She has been active in 4-H, FFA and basketball. In the fall, Block plans to attend Southern Illinois University at Carbondale to pursue degrees in equine science and agriculture business. She hopes to use her degrees to work in the agriculture field and be involved in horses. The scholarships support students who will pursue an agriculture degree or a degree that will contribute to the quality of rural life. Recipients were selected from a pool of 165 applicants based on their future commitment to rural America, academic achievement, community activities and agriculture involvement.
GED testing will be May 22-23 PRINCETON — The Bureau-Henry-Stark Regional Office of Education will administer the General Educational Development exam from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 22-23 at the Business Employment Skills Team Office (IBC building) on Backbone Road East in Princeton. Registration, which must be done prior to the testing, will be taken from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the BEST office. A $50 fee in the form of a money order or cash is due at the time of registration. No personal checks will be accepted.

Jacob Bohm wins welding competition MOLINE — Jacob Bohm, a student at Bureau Valley High School/Whiteside Area Career Center, won a first-place prize of $500 in the second annual High School Welding
Competition at Midwest Technical Institute on the Quad Cities campus of the Midwest Technical Institute. The students were given several different raw pieces of metal and a blueprint. They were asked to produce the project from the blue print using their skills in
arc and MIG welding. Students were also required to take a written exam to demonstrate their knowledge on basic terminology and blueprint reading. The winners were determined by their competency in written exam, project assembly and accuracy and overall quality of their welds.
