Red Stars top Reign to remain in playoff hunt Midfielder Shannon Boxx to lead lupus fundraising walk Saturday SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LISLE – The playoff dream is still alive. After a rocky start to the season, the Chicago Red Stars stayed in the hunt for a National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth with a 3-1 win over Seattle Reign FC Saturday at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. Facing U.S. Women’s National Team players and Reign standouts Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe, Chicago (7-7-5) got on the board first when Sonja Fuss scored on a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the game. The Reign pulled even on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, but the Red Stars added two more goals against Solo. Solo attempted to clear the ball late in the first half, but it hit Inka Grings in the chest and she settled it before firing the ball into the back of the net in the 41st minute. Grings virtually sealed the win when she scored off a Jen Hoy feed in the 71st minute. The Red Stars play on the road against the Washington

Boxx revealed in 2012 that she was living with lupus and has become a spokeswoman to raise awareness for the disease. The walk is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and features 1- and 3-mile routes. Funds raised at the Walk to End Lupus Now event will benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, Illinois Chapter’s mission to

DG Rebels softball take second at tournament SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – At least they didn’t go down without a fight. Playing in the championship game of the Orland Park Tournament during the July 4 weekend, the Downers Grove Rebels 18U softball team took second place after a 6-5 defeat to the Flossmoor Hurricanes. The Rebels trailed 6-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, but scored three runs in the top of the frame to put a scare into the Hurricanes. In the semifinals, the Rebels enjoyed the other side of a close game as they topped the Frankfort Fusion 3-2.
