The band’s first performance of the season Thursday will be on the Lisle Community Park stage beginning at 7:30 p.m. It will be a patriotic concert to honor the Armed Forces and will include
an Armed Forces Salute with a flag ceremony by local VFW member Ross Bishop. “It is very moving,” said Laura Topping, another member of the band, of Thursday’s performance.
The band practices Tuesday and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Lisle High School’s band room. Green recalled the beginning days of the band, with three or four members initially. During a rehearsal June 13, 44 members of the band turned out. The band provides wholesome, family entertainment and a chance to get away from the TV and video games to hear live music, Green added. “I’m so glad we do this. I don’t know what I would do if this wasn’t here,” Anderson said.

Oral cancer, on the other hand, is a potentially lifethreatening condition. With regular exams, this disease can be identified early. Then there’s the great feeling you’ll have after having your teeth cleaned professionally by your dentist or a hygienist. Despite your best efforts at home with brushing and flossing, plaque can build up on your teeth. Visit your dentist at least twice a year. In addition to keeping your smile fresh and bright, regular visits will, in the long run, save you money.

LISLE – For the past 27 years, people of many ages and occupations have doubled as music lovers to do what they love most: create music in Lisle. The Lisle Community Band will kick off its 27th season Thursday. Steve Green of Lisle started the band in 1987. “It’s a chance to get adults to get their instrument out again,” said Green, who retired in 2011 after 30 years as Lisle High School’s band director. The band has no auditions and is open to anyone high school age or older who can read music. The band consists of brass, woodwind and percussion. Members pay a $30 annual membership fee. The band members play a variety of music, such as marches, classical, jazz and Broadway tunes. “It’s challenging,” band member Cathy Anderson said. “It keeps you interested, but it’s not overwhelming. “It’s fun to play and see the younger kids enjoy it, too,” she said. “We’re able to see them in another environment. I get a kick out of the fact that we’re all together.”
