CHANGES IN THE MOUTH FROM AGING Q: My teeth have been getting a little darker as I age. Is that normal?
A: Alas, as we age, changes take place in the mouth. Changes that come with aging affect the teeth, gums, jawbone and other features of the mouth. A darkening of the teeth is one of these natural changes. Over the years the enamel of your teeth tends to become more transparent. It shows more of the dentin underneath, and the dentin is what darkens with age. The teeth also literally wear down over decades of use. Chewing, for instance, wears down the biting surface of the teeth. That type of wear is called attrition. Another type of wear is called abrasion. It occurs in the cementum that covers the root of the tooth. This type of wear is more common in older people whose gums have receded. Receded gums also make the roots more vulnerable to decay. Another natural change is the wrinkling of skin around the mouth. It’s just a fact that older cells contain less water and older tissue, less fat. Older people who have lost some or all of their teeth are also more likely to experience bone resorption, or dissolution. Dryness in the mouth is another natural part of aging. It can be exacerbated by other factors, including medication use. Talk with your dentist about how to keep your mouth healthy as you age.

CAROL STREAM – DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church in Naperville donated 62 party-in-a-box kits to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP). The kits will be added to the birthday box of children enrolled in HSP’s Children’s Birthday Project (CBP). The program helps children in need celebrate and receive gifts during the month of their birthday, which their families otherwise would not be able to provide for them due to financial hardships. The Unitarian Universalist Church has an endowment fund where members can donate money. Once the collection reaches a certain amount, groups within the church can make a case for a cause they would like to support. The church’s middle school youth group chose CBP as the cause it wanted to support for its yearly service project this year. The group went to Party City to buy birthday supplies for CBP. As members were checking out of the store, the manager asked why they needed so many birthday boxes. After the group explained its
plan, the manager took a huge discount off of the purchase and the group was able to purchase double the amount that it originally had intended to purchase. The group wrapped the party-in-abox kits and wrote birthday messages for the children. The boxes will go to 62 of the 900 children enrolled in the program. Each child of CBP receives a 20 to 25 pound birthday box. This box contains a party-in-a-box kit. Each kit includes items like cake mix, frosting, candles, balloons, streamers, cups, napkins and plates. The birthday box also contains between six and 10 new toys, new books, stuffed animals, school supplies and smaller gifts. The children who are enrolled in the program, along with their siblings up to age 15, also receive a minimum of three gifts at Christmas through HSP’s annual Christmas offering. About 150 families served through the project also receive three weeks worth of groceries at Christmastime. In the summer months, 100 of these families receive groceries to help combat hunger.
