Astronomical Society plans Public Star Party GENEVA – The Fox Valley Astronomical Society will host a free Public Star Party at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva. The evening will begin with a short presentation in the Orientation Barn, “Solar System Models.” Participants then will head outside to see the moon, Saturn, Venus, Mercury and the Whirlpool Galaxy through a members’ telescopes. Teens to compete at Battle of the Bands GENEVA – Teen bands will compete at the Geneva Park District’s Battle of the Bands event, which starts at 4 p.m. Monday, June 17, at the Third Street main stage in downtown Geneva. Bands, made up of those 12 to 19 years old, will vie for a chance to move to a regional competition. The winning act also will perform at Swedish Days. Admission is free. Camp to teach kids the basics of karate GENEVA – A Karate Camp for youths ages 4 to 9 is set from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday to Thursday, June 18 to 20, at World Martial Arts Academy, 316 Anderson Blvd., Geneva. Kiwanis Club to host soap box derby race GENEVA – The Kiwanis Club of Geneva will host its inaugural All American Soap Box Derby race in Geneva. Race will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 22, on Second Street between Fulton and Campbell streets. This race will feature the Stock division and will give boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13 the opportunity to compete in an Official All American Soap Box Derby Race. Geneva’s winner will qualify for the national race, to be in July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. In the coming months, interested participants can attend two types of workshops; an Informational workshop and a construction workshop/clinic. Geneva HomeGoods fundraising for cancer GENEVA – Geneva HomeGoods is raising money for the Dana-Far-

ber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund through Sunday, June 30. The store at 706 Commons Drive, Geneva, is one of 275 stores nationwide participating in the 12th Annual HomeGoods “Helps Families Fight Cancer” campaign benefiting the Jimmy Fund, which supports pediatric and adult cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Customers can participate by making a contribution at the register to Help Families Fight Cancer, with proceeds benefiting Dana-Farber. Customers also can buy a reusable shopping bag for 99 cents featuring artwork by Jimmy Fund Clinic pediatric patients. HomeGoods will contribute 50 cents for each bag bought to the Jimmy Fund. HomeGoods and its customers have raised more than $3.1 million for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, officials said.

Kane Co. Bar Foundation now accepting grants The Kane County Bar Foundation is accepting grants from nonprofit organizations seeking to meet the unfilled legal needs of local residents. Since 1996, the foundation has offered funds to encourage and reward cooperation and creativity to develop new and innovative programs and resources to better meet the legal needs of the community. This is a competitive process. Only one application will be accepted per agency per funding year. Applications are due no later than Monday, July 1, and they may be obtained on the Kane County Bar Association website (www. kanecountybar.org/kcbf-grants) or by emailing the foundation’s executive director, Jan Wade, director@kanecountybar.org. – Shaw Media
