$15,412 Projected cost of electric work for O’ sole Mio The full City Council will vote Monday on the committee’s recommendation. The grant application was for upgrading the electric service in the space to accommodate O’ Sole Mio. Harris had tried to request a grant earlier this year, but couldn’t because aldermen were in the middle of revising the rules for the program. The electric work was projected to cost $15,412. First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien voiced his support for the grant. “The electric service was in pretty poor shape,” he said. “The money had to be used to make it safe.” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the building represents “one of the more historical buildings in the downtown area.”

BATAVIA – Aldermen have recommended giving a $7,706 downtown improvement grant to the owner of a building along North River Street that now houses an Italian gelato cafe. Aldermen at a joint committee Monday recommended giving the grant to Bruce Harris, who owns the building at 27 N. River St. Batavia couple Andrea and Tora Chiappelli recently opened an Italian gelato cafe, O’ Sole Mio, in the building, which formerly housed the offices of U.S. Congressman Bill Foster. Antonio Natale of Carol Stream also is a partner in the business. Gelato is the Italian version of ice cream. As part of the city’s downtown improvement grant program, building owners are eligible for up to 50 percent of actual improvement costs, up to the maximum amount set by the Batavia City Council.

ELBURN – Madison Mientus said she fell in love with acting in sixth grade, when her mom pushed her to audition for the school play, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” She got a part, and now the 16-year-old St. Charles North High School sophomore said she is working toward securing a talent agent and, from Madison there, auditions Mientus for commercials and films. Next month, Mientus – who goes by the stage name Madison Rae – plans to travel to California for the International Performing Arts Showcase, where she will audition for multiple talent agents, she said. To help pay for her airfare and other expenses, including the classes she took through the International Performing Arts Academy, the Elburn teenager has organized a variety show set for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Elburn Com-

of agents last year after taking classes from Actors, Models & Talent for Christ, she said. This year, she took classes from the International Performing Arts Academy. She has been preparing for the showcase since March, she said. She will have two scenes to play – one from a fictional soap opera and the other from a fictional sitcom. Being chosen for the showcase was overwhelming, Mientus said. She described it as a confidence boost to be so young and someone thinking you’re good enough. “It’s pretty awesome,” she said. “I’ve had this dream forever.”
