sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN — The Glenbard West girls soccer team has dealt with plenty of obstacles in the early stages of the 2013 season, from inexperience and injuries to hardfought losses against quality competition. But on Saturday, everything came together for the Hilltoppers in a 2-0 victory over Glenbard South. Zoe Pearson scored both goals for Glenbard West while Kylie Paul recorded the shutout in goal. “We scored two very nice goals that were the results of excellent play,” said Glenbard West coach Maciej Kusmierz, “and they involved three or four players on each one. “It is always nice to get a win. Early in the season, we’ve experienced some tough times. We’ve been close but a lot of times, we just couldn’t catch a break.” After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, Pearson broke through eight minutes into the second half with a shot into the upper-right corner of

Josh Nguyen and Luke Skala tied for first place on the pommel horse with scores of 7.60. Perry Zumbrook was first on the parallel bars (8.60), third on the horizontal bar (7.20), fifth on the floor (8.50) and seventh on the rings (7.20). Joey Mandarino was the runner-up on the still rings with an 8.60 while Jon McNamara came in second on the parallel bars (8.60). Less than two minutes later, Alexandra Levin found Pearson’s head with a cross which resulted in a two-goal advantage. “Obviously the first goal was a great shot on her part,” the coach said. “But the most difficult part was getting herself into that position by splitting two defenders. “On the second goal, very few teams have the luxury of having left-footed players. Alex can strike the ball with her left foot just as well as with her right foot. She couldn’t have placed it any better.” On the other sideline, Glenbard South coach Glen Eggert was frustrated with a lack of consistency from his squad. “We played softly and without desire,” said Eggert,
and Dominick Sansone added a seventh-place finish on the floor (8.20). A day earlier, the squad beat Addison Trail 138.50-118.40 in a non-conference meet. Zumbrook won the all-around title with a score of 47.200, highlighted by a 9.30 on the vault. Glenbard South The Raiders finished runner-up with a score of 129.00 at the 1st Annual Steve Kafka Invitational Saturday. Eugene Boguslavsky came in first on the floor with a 9.50 and first on the horizontal bar with an 8.00. SOFTBALL Glenbard West The Hilltoppers picked up a West Suburban Silver victory on Monday, defeating Hinsdale Central 13-1 in five innings. Glenbard West scored four runs in the first frame and added six in the second to break it open. Rachel Terwilliger went 3-for4 with three runs scored while Stacey Borneman went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Julia Waggoner added a pair of hits and Maggie Stalker was 1-for-1 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBIs.
GIRLS TRACK Glenbard West The Hilltoppers claimed the team title with 86 points at the Sue Pariseau Invitational which they hosted Saturday at Benedictine University after the event was moved due to last week’s heavy rains. Madeline Perez cruised to the title in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:54.40 while teammate Lisa Luczak was third (5:14.55). Emma Reifel captured first place in the 800 with a clocking of 2:17.78. Emma Gambol was the runner-up in the 100 (13.14) and the 300 hurdles (46.29). Luczak was also fourth in the 3,200 with Grace Rogers coming in
