Keep your hair on, girls! How a celebrity retreat is using strict diets and head massages to save women from baldness 

The SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain vows to help you strengthen your locks Treatment includes head massages and a strict macrobiotic diet regime By SARAH HARTLEY PUBLISHED: 22:09 GMT, 22 March 2014 | UPDATED: 15:16 GMT, 23 March 2014

Losing locks: Eight million British women suffer from hair loss or thinning hair at some point in their lives

It is pretty safe to say that my hair – namely, my worries about it thinning – is bordering on obsession. It’s a concern my mother, Maggie, shares. At 66, she is worried that her good head of healthy hair is now thinning due to age. We’re not alone. Eight million British women suffer at some point in their lives and chemists’ shelves heave with potions and vitamins aimed at remedying the problem. Causes can range from hormonal and genetic to the dietary and psychological. I am 41, and, despite being fastidious about eating healthily, exercising and taking a daily multivitamin, my hair often falls out in alarming amounts. I swap the side I part my hair and try to ignore the fact that in certain lights, you can see scalp. When I heard about a medical spa offering a treatment package aimed at halting hair-loss, my mother and I booked in without hesitation. No matter that the weekend break would set us back close to £2,500. If I counted up the amount I have spent on hair supplements, then it would be an investment. It was a no-caffeine, no-alcohol, no-sugar regime (and pity the poor smokers who were not allowed to puff on site). Serious medical assessments were bolstered by a strict vegan diet to cleanse the system. But the SHA Wellness Clinic, set in the mountains of Valencia, Spain, has been voted best medical Spa by Conde Nast Traveller. The luxurious resort has played host to guests including Barbra Streisand and Donna Karan. So if we were to suffer, we would at least do it in style.

WHAT’S THE TREATMENT?

SHA focuses on improving health through natural therapies combined with Eastern and the most advanced Western medicine.   

More... It's official: Sitting around really DOES give you a fat behind (in case you didn't already know) Has the Jade Goody effect worn off? New selfie app encourages women to have smear tests after take-up plummets Why dark chocolate really IS good for you: Stomach microbes turn cocoa into a natural drug that reduces blood pressure

The weekend programme examined every aspect of our medical history and there was a health check, then individual spa treatments. We were put on a macrobiotic diet – based on 60 per cent grains, plus seasonal local vegetables, seaweeds (yes!) and seasonal local fruit. We enjoyed delicious, delicate and stunning-looking dishes which made us realise brown rice, soya and tofu can be exciting and we could forgo meat, fish, eggs and cheese without it feeling a punishment.

Hair-raising in a good way: Sarah Hartley and her mother Maggie visited SHA Wellness Clinic in Valencia, Spain to try to reverse age's effect on their hair

But cutting out three double espressos and two cups of tea a day was hell. When I woke, I looked as if I’d done rounds in the boxing ring – my eyes were puffed up and blackened – all part of the detoxification process, I was told. Nutrition expert Kenneth Prange asked if I suffered with kidney problems (yes) and poor circulation (yes). I spotted a chart on the wall of a woman’s face indicating related areas. Mum and I are both blessed with bags beneath our eyes – not related to sleep deprivation – and that area was linked to .  .  . the kidneys. The solution is to stimulate and strengthen the kidneys through diet and to make sure blood flows to the head through massage and exercise. A daily cup of Japanese Mu tea was prescribed to support the kidneys. It had an acquired bitter taste which we grew to love as it was the nearest thing we would get to a nice cuppa. Mum was reassured that due to genetics her hair is strong, but could be improved.

SPA SOLUTIONS A daily programme offered optional nutritional lectures and macrobiotic cooking demonstrations. We were to swim in the outdoor pool, then follow the indoor pool circuit which encouraged circulation with hot and cold plunge pools, baths, a sauna, a steam room and an ice fountain. We had two daily treatments, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, either side of breakfast and lunch.

Healthy home: The SHA Wellness Clinic follows a no-caffeine, noalcohol, no-sugar regime and medical assessments were bolstered by a strict vegan diet

The first was a nutritive capillary treatment (25 minutes, €70), including nourishing, repairing and hydrating treatments. Using Ayurvedic massage, essential oils were vigorously applied to stimulate the scalp. We felt wide awake and invigorated. In the afternoon came the SHA capillary treatment (50 minutes, €120). It started with a relaxing massage using rosemary, mint and sesame oil to increase blood flow to the scalp and included massage techniques based on traditional Chinese medicine, aided with a glass-cup method which stimulates blood circulation. We finished with a relaxing, warm hair masque. SHA offers an extraordinary range of preventative treatments with 100 therapists on hand. We could also have tried a ‘mineral elements in hair profile’ (€200), a ‘woman’s hormonal profile’ (€340) or the OSTEOgen (€630) genetic screening for osteoporosis prevention.

. . . AND AFTERWARDS

We both followed a macrobiotic diet for three months and felt tremendous. It requires serious dedication long-term. But the essence of the programme remains with us both, which has been a surprise. I now drink only green tea and have turned vegan, and Mum limits meat to once a week. We’re now both big fans of almond milk and spelt bread. Our hair has responded brilliantly to what turned out to be simple adjustments and it was well worth the effort. We no longer fret if the plughole occasionally looks like a scene from a horror film. We simply step up the scalp self-massage and neck exercises we were taught, keep the diet in check – and talk about our next booster visit to SHA. shawellnessclinic.com

A foodie wellness experience at SHA in Spain

Nina Caplan escaped the dreary UK winter for the brightness of SHA in Spain.

‘I eat some delicious sushi rolls, with a soy sauce dip so good I want to ask for a bottomless cup’ Nina Caplan finds the food is the highlight at SHA Welllness Clinic in Spain November is a great time to leave England. With no regrets, I escape the chilly drizzle for a short flight to Alicante and walk out into sunshine – but not before being met by a samurai at the arrival gates. He’s actually wearing the spa uniform of SHA Wellness Clinic, but he’s a tall Frenchman and my goodness the flowing black cotton trousers and grey tunic make him hard to miss. I wonder whether, if Spanish customs were to give me any trouble, he would whip out a curved sword?

SHA has a cool, clean design

The clinic is in El Albir, a village an hour and 40 minutes drive up the Costa Blanca, some of the most architecturally unappealing coastline in Spain. After passing Benidorm and driving through El Albir itself –a small coastal wen that’s never going to win any best-kept

village prizes – it’s a pleasant shock to see the white tiers of SHA rising over the town. There’s a water feature as you enter, live greenery spilling over the edges of each of the five levels, and everything is cool white marble. The complex is linked at the fourth floor, where the restaurant and pool are, and the views over the bay from this eyrie are lovely. My room also has that wonderful view, with a glass wall so I don’t miss any of it; it’s large and comfortable, with a lounge area and balcony and an entire boudoir for my clothes that I would probably have swapped for a bigger bathroom – it seems odd to me, in a spa, not to have a bath, although the hydrocircuit downstairs goes a way towards compensating.

The bedrooms at SHA boast spectacular sea views

The décor is coolly modern, which is fine by me, but I’d have liked an ipod dock rather than a piped music outlet (apparently some rooms have them, but all should) and conditioner as well as shampoo in the bathroom. Their products are nothing special, which seems to me to miss a trick, especially in a place that’s very keen on naturalness and talks loudly about the macrobiotic lifestyle. I get a weigh-in from a friendly nurse and a consultation with Kenneth Prange, the Scot who runs the macrobiotic programme. (His wife designed the menus, and her hour-long cookery class was one of the highlights of my stay, although I’m not sure my red millet burgers are ever going to taste a tenth as good as hers.) He suggests I move between two of the menu’s three options: Kushi and Biolight. Both are three-course menus, vegetarian, dairyfree and macrobiotic, but the latter is lighter. (The third option is for serious dieters and I’m too greedy to try it.) He also suggests several teas, including two – Kombu and Ume-ShoKuzu – that are so delicious I ask for the recipes before I leave.

We favoured the Japanese-influenced dishes

The food is very tasty although oddly heavy on the carbs -with one tagliatelle dish, I find myself pawing through the pasta looking for tiny squares of veg. The Japanese-influenced cuisine works better: I eat some delicious sushi rolls, with a soy sauce dip so good I want to

ask for a bottomless cup. Beverages are water and special teas, although Mr Prange advises not drinking while you eat. He explains that saliva is really good for digestion, which makes sense, and that it shouldn’t be substituted with any other form of liquid. When you’re not eating, though, there are jugs of water, creatively flavoured with rosemary or ginger or strawberries, all over the complex, which is great for those of us who tend to forget to rehydrate – even when deprived of more interesting beverages. I do crack one morning and order a coffee, and you can buy wine with your meal if you want to, but I don’t, and I feel all the better for it. The spa is excellent – a shiatsu massage was one of the best I’ve had – but if you are female and uncomfortable with getting down to your pants so a strange man can run his hands all over you, do tell them. I had an excellent deep-tissue massage from a Spaniard with strong hands and a lovely accent and was quite happy to lie there and pretend I was getting a massage from Javier Bardem, but some women may not be.

The main spa pool has jets for every conceivable muscle

I defy anyone not to enjoy the hydrocircuit: I’ve never seen one quite like it. The huge main pool has jets for every conceivable muscle, there’s a separate pool where underwater loungers emit massaging spray, and the cold and warm-water pebble walks are soothing on feet that hadn’t, in my case, done much to need soothing: there is a national park not far from the clinic, and daily morning walks there or to the beach, but I’m not much of an organised walk groupie. The circuit also has a sauna, wet room and an ice fountain for those (guilty!) too cowardly to jump in the cold pool. It’s enclosed, but with doors onto the garden for when the weather improves from T-shirt to bikini.

Yoga at SHA is done in a gorgeous room but the teaching and offer could be improved

Where SHA falls down a little though is on the exercise. There is a small-ish gym with really good personal trainers but the organised classes are poor. The yoga and pilates room is dark and unwelcoming and the teachers seemed to have been chosen more for their ability

to speak both English and Spanish than their talent as instructors. I took to doing yoga on my balcony and running in the gym but for an area that apparently has yoga and zumba teachers going spare this was failing both clients and a town that probably doesn’t get that much benefit from the high-end spa at its height. Still, for a detox or destress, SHA has the goods: if you want a quiet place with superlative views, where you can lie out in light clothing a mere two hours’ flight from Gatwick, this is in every sense a top spot. I leave calm, more rested than I’d been in months, very grateful for so much time in the open air or consuming healthy food – and very much looking forward to my first post-detox glass of wine. © Queen of Retreats

SHA Wellness Clinic: a chic macrobiotic spa in Spain

In Short: SHA is a destination spa on the Mediterranean just north of Alicante, with a strong focus on macrobiotic cooking and medical staff to supplement the spa therapists. The place is beautiful, perched above the lacklustre town of El Albir, so all you see from the rooftop relaxation area is the Mediterranean coast beyond. It’s a relaxing place to detox, lose weight, learn about macrobiotics and soak up sunshine – even at times of the year when the UK has nothing but frost. From €230/290 (£190/240) (single/double) per room per night for a Deluxe Suite. Read about our experience at SHA See other destination spas we recommend

Ask a question or book direct

SHA also offer classes in microbiotic cooking

More on the wellbeing programmes: Specific programmes include detox, weight loss, smoking withdrawal, anti-stress, rejuvenation and fertility, all of which involve clinic oversight, a personalised treatment plan and recommended length of stay, sometimes up to two weeks. For the less committed there are three general plans, for 2, 4 and 7 days respectively, all including taster beauty treatments such as massages, a general medical check up and recommended diet plan and unlimited use of the facilities. Then there are aesthetic programmes: you can focus entirely on rejuvenating your hands, if you wish…

More on the wellbeing activities: The hydrocircuit is open all day for guests and is one of the highlights of the spa: a different jet to pummel every possible aching muscle, a sauna with glass wall onto an enclosed lawn, underwater loungers with massaging spray – you could spend all day here.

The rooftop at SHA is a highlight

There is a rotating schedule of guest experts, from meditation experts to purveyors of all kinds of strange and wonderful therapies. The regular treatments are excellent too, ranging from seaweed wraps (€130 for 50 minutes) to a series of massages (mostly around €125 (£105) for 50 minutes) that are well worth it: try the shiatsu for a totally restorative experience. The personal trainers are very good and can also accompany you on private activities, such as walking or cycling, if you wish. You can go walking alone in the nearby national park or by the beach, or just join the group activities, which range from early morning Nordic walking to mid-afternoon macrobiotic cookery lessons and early evening tai chi. (These change daily.) Some of these, inevitably, are better than others. If all this – or extracurricular possibilities such as diving or jet skiing – feels too energetic, head to the bar for herbal teas and a book from the substantial library. After dinner, there is often a pianist or a dance class in here, too.

The views from the bedrooms are superb

More on the property: The spa is exceptionally beautiful – white marble, rising in tiers with greenery washing over the sides, it consists of five buildings linked on the fourth floor, where the restaurant, with its glass piano and under-floor pond, is under-floor window on two sides, offering views of the Mediterranean and the sunworshippers on the terrace outside. There’s an infinity pool that looks over the town and the mountains, and the space is so large and unconventionally laid out that there is room for both conviviality and privacy. More on the bedrooms: Bedrooms range from Deluxe, which actually is deluxe, with double bed and decentsized living room – there seems little reason to go higher, except for a kitchen rather than a dressing room, which some Superior suites offer. If you have a bit of extra cash, spend it on a private Jacuzzi on the balcony, preferably with a sea view – the views are really superb.

SHA offers three different menus

Food & drink: There’s a three-tier menu with European-Japanese fusion food: Kushi, with small portions, lots of seaweed (but fish only once a week) and little in the way of carbs; Biolight, an intermediate menu which, for the less rigorous, mixes and matches nicely with the Sha menu – the full gourmet experience. All menus changed completely at every meal and all were dairy- and meat-free and reasonably macrobiotic – so, no tomatoes or potatoes, but fish and carbs for those who want them, supplemented by prescribed teas and juices. There were some real winners – superb sushi, great soups, homemade bread and a wonderful mushroom risotto – but also times when the restriction on spice of any kind felt cruel, and a couple of pasta dishes that seemed to prioritise the carbs over any kind of accompaniment.

With three glass walls the restaurant also has great views

Fellow guests: Mostly middle-aged or older, presumably well-heeled, pretty quiet. This is a place to go inward. There are a lot of overheard conversations about food regimes! W

hat’s queenly: The three-sided views from the restaurant, most of the food, the terrace overlooking the

Mediterranean, and - a surprise, this – the teas, which were delicious as well as beneficial. What’s lowly: There are plans for a much bigger fitness complex and more classes, but until they appear, SHA’s focus is skewed a little too far towards what you put in your mouth. Costs: From €230/290 (£190/240) (single/double) per room per night for a Deluxe Suite; Superior Suite €450/550 (£375/455); Grand Suite for up to 4 people €750 (£623); Presidential €2500 (£2100); Royal suite €6000 (£4980), which includes VIP airport transfer, personal butler suffer and chauffeured limousine. Sea view is €40 (£33)/day, private balcony Jacuzzi €50 (£42)/day. Breakfast is €25 (£21)/day, half board €75 (£62), full board €125 (£104). If you are doing a programme, meals will be included in that price. © Queen of Retreats
