TALKING THEATRE Lynne Parker, Maureen White and Arthur Riordan in conversation. Oct 8, Post-show 5pm (approx).

Peer Gynt: The boy who never grew up, the escapologist extraordinaire. Rough Magic, who stormed the Festival last year with the remarkable Phaedra, has reunited with the author of their 2004 smash-hit Improbable Frequency, with this original new take on Ibsen’s epic study of delusion, self-evasion and wild imaginings. Caught between his angel and his demon, haunted by the women he loved, lost and betrayed, and catapulted through a life built on fantasy, Peer Gynt is finally forced to face himself. Fast, funny and told with Rough Magic’s trademark theatrical wit, this classic tale is re-imagined in a spectacular and surreal interpretation with live music from the outstanding ensemble Tarab. Truly a story for our times.

Directed by Emma Rice

HEROIC

TALKING THEATRE Members of the company. Oct 13, Post-show 9.30pm (approx).

The Festival is delighted to welcome one of the most innovative and exhilarating theatre companies in the world, Kneehigh, to Dublin. A company famed for producing world-dominating theatrical spectacle from its base in Cornwall, Kneehigh has been presenting dark yet magical renderings of well known fairy tales for the last thirty years. The Wild Bride is the tale of what happens when a man accidentally sells his daughter to the devil. Betrayed by her witless father and rejecting the devil, she meets her prince. Fortune changes again as the war starts, and she is left alone in the wilderness to embark on an enchanted and epic voyage of discovery, healing and hope. An irreverent romance for all ages, this is a lyrical story with a brutal edge and a beating heart. Reuniting the creative team behind the worldwide smash-hit The Red Shoes and after astounding audiences in Broadway with the Tony Award-nominated Brief Encounter, this is a brand new show not to be missed. Expect instinctive storytelling and devilish humour laced with a heady mix of live blues music.

TESTAMENT By Colm Tóibín Directed by Garry Hynes Designed by Francis O’Connor Lighting Design by Peter Mumford Sound Design by Gregory Clarke Cast Marie Mullen

FAITH TRUTH DOUBT

“Who do you say that I am?” Out of the mystery which involved silence and the slow spreading of news, one figure remains both iconic and deeply human. In a thrilling imaginative leap, one of Ireland's greatest writers has given voice to a woman who was forced to bear an unimaginable burden in tumultuous times. Colm Tóibín's searingly honest, provocative play asks big questions about what we believe, who we believe, and why. Directed by the internationally renowned Irish theatre director Garry Hynes, and starring Marie Mullen, this is a play about extraordinary events that continue to shape our world to this day. Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival and Landmark Productions are proud to present the world première of this astonishing piece of theatre.

UNITY CONFIDENCE

Acclaimed choreographer Michael Keegan Dolan and leading musician Liam Ó Maonlaí with a united company of musicians and dancers, embark on a journey to explore the tension and harmony between Irish traditional music and modern dance. The Festival is delighted to present this world première, created as a response to the current seismic changes in Irish society. Ó Maonlaí’s album Rian (meaning imprint or trace) was inspired by Seán Ó Riada’s seminal recording, Ó Riada sa Gaiety, and this production combines Rian as part of a live score with new material performed by Ó Maonlaí and leading musicians from across Ireland. Michael Keegan Dolan and Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, acclaimed for Festival hits Giselle (2003) and The Bull (2005), return with international contemporary dancers to explore old and new, collaboration and trust, tradition and invention, Ireland and the world.

Bob Crowley in conversation.

In this the second part of O’Casey’s great Dublin Trilogy, the ambitions of the Boyle family are set against the political and social events of Ireland’s War of Independence. Set in a tenement house, Juno and the Paycock is an epic tale of survival and vengeance punctuated by dreadful poverty. Juno, the spirited matriarch of the Boyle household tries to keep her family together while it is being pulled apart by growing political unrest. Her husband, Captain Jack Boyle drinks his way through his days with his side-kick Joxer Daly, while their children fail tragically in their own search for a better life. When the family learns of an inheritance from a distant relative, it seems that all their problems will be solved, but will they manage to transcend the events that conspire to keep them in their place?

Directed by Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke Based on a concept by Vanessa Van Durme

CELEBRATION AUTHENTICITY LONGING TALKING THEATRE Members of the company. Oct 10, Post-show 9.15pm (approx).

The Festival is delighted to welcome the return to Dublin of one of the most influential dance theatre companies in the world, les ballets C de la B, after spellbinding audiences with vsprs at the 2006 Dublin Dance Festival. Gardenia is a flamboyant and defiant tale featuring seven ageing transsexuals and transvestites, who, through fake eyelashes, glitter and gloss, convey the indomitable nature of the human spirit. Sometimes hilarious often poignant, this glitter-dusted mix of song, dance, theatre and cabaret is a shimmering yet deeply tender experience that defies categorisation. A unique collaboration between the celebrated musical director Frank Van Laecke and the multi award-winning Alain Platel, one of the world’s leading directors and choreographers, Gardenia comes to Dublin having taken the world by storm following its première at the illustrious Avignon Festival in 2010.

“A wonderful, subtle, problematic and humane book.” The Irish Times

By Hugo Hamilton Directed by Patrick Mason Set and Costume Design by Joe Vanek Cast Stephen Brennan, Denis Conway, Julika Jenkins, John Kavanagh, Tadhg Murphy and Marion O’Dwyer

TALKING THEATRE Rewarding Rewording: In conversation with Hugo Hamilton. Oct 11, 6pm. The Gate Lab. See Special Events pg55-61.

Hugo Hamilton’s best-selling memoir, The Speckled People, has been hailed as an ‘instant classic’ and has been translated into twenty languages. The Gate Theatre is delighted to present the world première of the author’s adaptation of this extraordinary work. The Speckled People tells the profoundly moving story of a young boy trapped in a language war. Set in 1950’s Ireland, this is a gripping, poignant, and often a very funny family drama. As a young boy, Hamilton struggled with what it means to be speckled, “half and half... Irish on top and German below.” Caught between his fiercely nationalistic father and his warmhearted German mother, Hugo must free himself from his parents’ secrets before he can find a place where he belongs.

THE BLUE BOY Devised and Directed by Feidlim Cannon and Gary Keegan Music by Seán Millar

TALKING THEATRE Feidlim Cannon, Gary Keegan and Seán Millar in conversation. Oct 11, Post-show 8.45pm (approx).

Following the phenomenal success of Silver Stars in 2009, Brokentalkers return to the Festival with this powerful new show, which deals with the experiences of men and women who were incarcerated as children in Catholic residential care institutions. A haunting and moving piece, this highly anticipated new show has already been described as one of the theatrical highlights of 2010 following its In Development presentation at last year’s Festival. With choreography from internationally renowned Eddie Kay (DV8/Frantic Assembly) and original music by Seán Millar (writer of Silver Stars), The Blue Boy combines live performance and recorded interviews with multi-media and film, and gives fresh theatrical voice to recently revealed stories of childhood abuse in Ireland.

This celebrated story of abandonment, grief and heartbreak centres on a desperate woman’s last phone call to an ex-lover. In Van Hove’s elegant production, the audience’s most voyeuristic impulses are skilfully manipulated to provide a fascinating insight into the chaotic unravelling of a passionate affair. TALKING THEATRE Marina Carr in conversation with Melissa Sihra. Sept 30, 6pm. Abbey Theatre. Advance booking essential.

“When I was a boy all I ever wanted was to fight a duel like Pushkin. And then to lie on a couch with my fatal wound eating cloudberries.” The Abbey Theatre presents a brand new play in which the life and death of the elusive Chekhov is examined through the eyes of one of Ireland’s leading playwrights, Marina Carr, in this energetic production directed by Wayne Jordan. In 16 POSSIBLE GLIMPSES, a series of dialogues and domestic scenes flash through the life of Chekhov, the master storyteller, master playwright, doctor, lover, brother, son. Glimpse; oceans of champagne, coffins, snow, beautiful gardens, a black monk travelling through time, trees, vodka, women, women, women and a life in which eternity is the only thing worth talking about. Featuring the best of Irish theatre talent, this dynamic new play sees a collision of visuals, words and music in a distinct and poetic re-imagining of the life of a brilliant man.

THE ANIMALS AND CHILDREN TOOK TO THE STREETS Created by 1927

TALKING THEATRE Members of the company. Oct 1, Post-show 8.55pm (approx).

Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf... is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night amongst the cockroaches, crime and corruption, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Using their trademark macabre cabaret style, this wickedly twisted new show from the multiple award-winning company behind the 2008 Festival hit Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, has been likened to a mixture of Fritz Lang, Charles Dickens and Tim Burton. Seamlessly synchronizing live music and performance with exquisite film and animation, 1927 brings this dystopian delight to Dublin as part of an extensive world tour.

THE RADICAL MIND Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Ireland, the Festival will present three independent contemporary works from Germany. In acknowledgement of Goethe’s magnitude as an original and radical thinker, and the ongoing centrality of radical thinking within contemporary German society, The Radical Mind season will focus on leading experimenters and innovators within its thriving theatre scene. When Shakespeare’s King Lear retires and divides his kingdom between his three daughters, he experiences a powerful disappointment: none of his daughters seem to love him adequately in return. Drawing from Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, this tender yet brutally honest production dares to show the painful realities of ageing and parenthood that affect us all but are seldom spoken. Standing on stage with their real-life fathers, performers expose their personal grievances without mercy: legal succession, hereditary diseases, home care plans, gas receipts, and an overbearing sense of guilt – all subject to public negotiation and scrutiny.

HONESTY FAMILY BETRAYAL

Funny and sad, brave and raw, this frank and razor-sharp show is creating waves around Europe after winning the Wild Card award at Theaterfestival Favoriten and being chosen as one of the top ten German shows of 2010 at the Berliner Theatertreffen.

“Never have I seen anything as honest and naked as this on stage and simultaneously laughed so much, that my heart felt a stitch...”

Gob Squad demands a revolution. Now. The first steps have been taken. The auditorium has been stormed, the box office has been occupied. All without bloodshed so far... With all the technology they can get their hands on and a charm offensive that uses cups of tea, cake and electric guitars, Gob Squad will reach out to the masses and incite them to rise up. Equipped with cameras, live links, big screens, wireless transmitters and long, long cables they’ll be broadcasting the revolution out into the world. This revolution WILL be televised. Live. Since 1994 Gob Squad has used the language of film, TV and pop music to explore the complexities and absurdities of contemporary culture. Always provocative, entertaining and emotionally charged, in this search for clarity the audience is faced with the same questions. Whose side are we on? JEALOUSY MOCKERY SEXUALITY

PANEL DISCUSSIONS Radical Thoughts: Oct 8, 1pm. Goethe-Institut. More Berlin than Boston?: Oct 1, 1pm. Project Arts Centre. See Special Events pg55-61.

Amongst the few roles for black actors in the western world, the character of Othello remains the most celebrated. Yet Shakespeare’s famous moor is not widely known in Africa. Across this cultural divide, Ivory Coast-born performer Franck Edmond Yao and German actress Cornelia Dörr now collide. Sharp, political and sensual, Othello c’est qui (Othello who’s that) plays with the ordinary and the trivial clichés surrounding Othello and Desdemona but gradually develops into a tough confrontation between two cultures marked by extreme emotions, prejudices, misunderstandings and contrasts. A mischievous but hard-hitting exchange, this frank and very human production won first prize at the 2009 Theatre Festival IMPULSE, and has charmed and stimulated audiences across Europe ever since.

OPPOSITION

This programme of intimate theatre experiences paints a very private portrait of Dublin city and its inhabitants. Centring on issues often ignored – some in the past, some present – Laundry, Trade, Request Programme and World’s End Lane – give us a glimpse into an often forgotten facet of Irish society.

A scathing indictment of government indifference, cynicism and incompetence in a forgotten township, Itsoseng is the gripping story of a local man whose hope of a new life is crushed with the realities of a corrupt system. Exploring themes rarely seen on the South African stage, Molusi's impassioned story of hope has taken the world by storm since winning a host of awards including an Edinburgh Fringe First in 2008 and the 2010 US Black Alliance Theater Award. A captioned performance will take place on Oct 7, at 8pm. See page 67 for more info.

“Inside there are two rooms. You are in one. Holding your dirty laundry. They are in the other. Waiting for you.” Following the award-winning World’s End Lane (see page 45), Laundry is the second instalment of a series of four site-specific works exploring the social history of a quarter mile area in Dublin’s north inner-city. In an Ireland whose collective consciousness is reeling from the exposition of institutions, the door to the Gloucester Street Magdalene Convent is opened and the audience is invited on a challenging, stimulating and thoughtprovoking journey.

“This is just this. It isn’t real. It’s money.” In a rundown guesthouse in Dublin’s north inner-city, a vulnerable and confused young rent boy sits with a middle-aged client. It’s not the first time they’ve met, but today the older man has blood on his shirt. A lot has happened since they last met. Multiple award-winning Mark O’Halloran is one of Ireland’s most celebrated screenwriters and has received worldwide acclaim for his films Adam & Paul and Garage. Performed in a real-life bed and breakfast, Trade is a provocative and moving exploration of desire, morality and duty, and is O’Halloran’s first stage play in ten years. Part performance, part musical, part installation and part film, The Lulu House invites you to become your own detective, bit by bit piecing together the tragic downfall of this elusive stage and screen icon. Inspired by George Pabst’s silent masterpiece Pandora’s Box and Wedekind’s 19th century ‘Lulu’ plays, this immersive experience will take you on a shocking, thrilling and intoxicating journey exploring how Lulu has eluded and seduced, spreading desire and destruction wherever she goes. Starring Lorcan Cranitch and Camille O’Sullivan this spellbinding production is directed by The Irish Times Irish Theatre Award-winner Selina Cartmell, who took last year’s Fringe by storm with the stunning Medea. The Lulu House offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the amoral psyche of this seductive femme fatale.

MISCHIEVOUS EXUBERANT COMEDIC

Slattery’s Sago Saga is the tale of Tim Hartigan, whose quiet life as the dogsbody of Poguemahone Hall is shattered by the arrival of a Scotch woman with an evil plan. Confusion awaits in the shape of a politically correct Leprechaun, a beautiful typist and a tycoon T.D. bent on bankrupting the country... One part carnival, one part surreal satire, this comic masterpiece – nominated for three awards at the 2010 Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards – is catapulted with surrealist energy into modern-day Ireland. Fight Night is a gripping journey charting the comeback of Dan Coyle Jr., a failed amateur boxer from a long line of accomplished fighters. Living in the shadows of his overbearing father and his brother’s Olympic success, Dan lets his training slip in favour of girls and booze. It’s not until the birth of his own son years later that his competitive fire is reignited, and he takes the first tentative steps on his road to redemption. Winner of the Best Actor and the Bewley’s Little Gem Award in last year’s Absolut Fringe, this fast-paced and engaging performance combines intense physicality with a classic Dublin wit in an experience that will leave audiences both exhausted and elated. MYSTERIOUS THRILLING DARING

Long ago in the depths of Siberia, Berninna was a world famous pianist who made hearts beat faster and ice caps melt everywhere she played. Now her fame is gone and she spends her days in a musty old house filled with mothballs and dusty trophies. Preparations begin for her birthday and celebrations beckon, but not everything is what it seems. Berninna hides a secret, deep between her crow’s feet. After thrilling audiences in last year’s Festival with the captivating Lava, Berninna is a story told with dancing lampshades, lost mice and singing ghosts, and shows how we can find the courage to start all over again and let go of the past.

IRISH THEATRE INSTITUTE INTERNATIONAL THEATRE EXCHANGE

THE NEXT STAGE

Since its inception in 1994, Irish Theatre Institute has pioneered international networking and promotion for Irish theatre companies and artists. The 18th annual International Theatre Exchange is a two day gathering of influential presenters and producers from across the world. Invited by ITI, they will engage with Irish companies and artists who have ‘ready for export’ productions or are working on projects with an attractive international dimension. Comprising bespoke one-toone meetings, panel discussions on topical industry issues, networking events, showcase and indevelopment performances, the Exchange is a must for all Irish producers of professional theatre who have an eye to international platforms. In the past two years alone, Irish companies have been invited to perform in London, Edinburgh, Auckland, Sydney, Tampere, Paris, Wiesbaden, New York, Cape Town and Grahamstown – can you afford to miss it?

Following the success of the inaugural symposium in 2009, the Gate Theatre, in association with Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival, will hold a second two day Directors’ Symposium in the Gate Lab. This event will allow mid-career directors the valuable opportunity to engage in structured sessions with leading actors, designers, directors, playwrights and producers. The success of this Directors’ Symposium has been widely recognised both within the Gate and further afield and many of the 2009 participants have formed significant relationships with the Gate. Past workshop leaders/speakers include Stephen Rea, Fiona Shaw, Deborah Warner, Lloyd Newson, Arpad Schilling, Declan Donnellan, Anne Bogart and Tim Crouch. Up to seventeen Irish theatre and dance practitioners from all disciplines will be chosen to participate. Maria Tecce’s vibrant new show is a smouldering night of song steeped in raw sensuality, elegance, and Spanish spice. The music of Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, and Led Zeppelin meets sizzling Argentinean tango, all served up in Tecce's fiery, visually stunning style. Strapless combines powerful vocals and the command of a leading actress with an electric stage presence that continues to bolster Tecce's burgeoning reputation. This performance has been designed especially for the Festival and has wowed audiences in Edinburgh, Boston, Dubrovnik, and New York in advance of its Irish première at the Festival Club.
