Celebrate 100 Years of Shiner Beer

Early last century the Czechs and Germans who settled around Shiner, Texas decided to open a brewery. They longed for the beers left behind in their homelands. They needed a brewmaster and looked to the old countries for the right guy. And what a guy they found. Kosmos Spoetzl. A one-time Bavarian soldier and trained brewmaster who came to Texas by way of Egypt and Canada. He bought the brewery, gave it his name and kick-started Shiner down the dirt road toward beer fame. 100 years later, Spoetzl is one of the country’s oldest independent breweries. And every drop of its beer is still made in Shiner, by only 56 employees. You can still feel the Czech and German influence in town – the names on the buildings, a hint of an accent here or there. But the heritage is most apparent in the beer still produced on Brewery Street, very near the spot where it all started in 1909. Take the 90-mile drive from Austin to the quaint town of Shiner, tour the brewery and meet the people who are handcrafting one of America’s best-loved beers. The brewery is closed on weekends. Shop Around- There is absolutely no shortage of opportunities to purchase art in Austin – take advantage of it. Check out as many galleries, auctions, art fairs and exhibitions as time will allow. Look at as much art as possible to find the perfect piece(s).

Know What You’re Buying - Understand the medium or the method by which the art was created, and clarify whether it’s an original or a reproduction. Be sure to ask about the artist if you’re looking for something local. Talk About It- Don’t be shy. Get the seller, be that the gallery owner or the artist themselves, to open up and tell you about the art. They will appreciate the opportunity to communicate their ideas, and you’ll have a better understanding of the piece. Put It in Perspective- So, do you actually have enough space on the blank wall in your den for that 6’x12’ mural you have your eye on? Will it clash with everything else you own? These questions shouldn’t be an ultimate judgment, but they should be considered in the very least. Trust Yourself - Art is an incredibly personal experience and a statement of who you are. Buy it because you love it. Ultimately, greatness is in the eye of the beholder.

ustin’s spiritual side is as abundant and diverse as its many other distinguished qualities. Residents hail from all over the world, allowing the region to embrace a multitude of historical and contemporary belief systems that span the globe, bringing meaning to the millions of lives rooted here. The variety of spiritual organizations, churches and temples located throughout the area represent numerous conceptions of faith and range from Jewish community centers to Hindu temples to non-denominational worship services atop Austin’s Mount Bonnell. As Texas is also a part of the Bible Belt, several fundamentalist Christian churches also blossom throughout the state and serve as the modern-day link to some of our nation’s oldest religions. In addition to being inspirational places of worship and personal discovery, many of the religious structures in Austin also stand as architectural masterpieces that embody major historical significance. For example, Central Christian Church, in downtown Austin, has stood proudly for more than 80 years, exemplifying the

Eclectic movement of the 1920s. Just down the road, San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, another spiritual landmark, serves as the final resting place for the defenders of the Alamo. The cathedral’s first cornerstone was laid in 1738, giving it the privilege of being the oldest in the United States. Thousands continue to attend the cathedral’s masses each weekend and tour buses regularly bring in thousands of visitors eager to view the church’s original sanctuary walls, hand-carved stone baptismal front, believed to have been gifted from King Charles III of Spain in 1759, and a pipe organ built by illustrious St. Louis organ builder George Kilgen in 1884. Wherever you prefer to practice your spirituality or whatever your personal beliefs may be, you’ll have no trouble keeping the faith in Austin –a place that’s known for inspiring the mind, as well as the heart. n

Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough

Texas Author’s Pen Healthy, Vegan Cookbook Inspired by Biblical Fasts Texans have a deep love for God and country. That’s why it’s not hard to believe Texans authored The Daniel’s Fast Cookbook. Grace Bass and Lynda Anderson, a mother daughter team, developed each of the recipes to help people successfully complete this Biblical Fast. The spiritual and health benefits of fasting are well known but many have difficulty with “water only” fasts. In The Daniel’s Fast Cookbook the recipes are based on what Daniel of the Bible requested to eat in order not to be defiled. They are vegan (no dairy, no eggs, no animal products) and whole grain. Walking into the Future

The history of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church is wedded closely to the growth and development of Westlake Hills: 1874 - William and Sophie Teague deeded two acres of their land to the County School Supervisor for a building to be used as a school/church house. 1923 - Presbyterian Seminary sent a full-time minister to hold services; the church became a mission of University Presbyterian Church. 1928 - A stone church building was erected near the school. The men of the community carted stones in wagons from the Eanes-Marshall ranch and barrels of water for mortar as they did construction themselves. Years later, the Austin Fire department gave the

church a bell that had been used to call volunteer firemen. The bell’s beautiful tone could be heard through the hills on Sunday morning. The building was dedicated December 11, 1932, and called Eanes Chapel. 1954 - Eanes Chapel was renamed Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in April. 1956 - A new brick church was built on Westlake Drive and Bee Caves Road. In the early 60’s an education wing was added and a white stone manse was built near the church. 1985 - The present church at Bee Caves Road and Barton Creek Drive was dedicated in October. The church bell has been moved each time the church moved as part of its roots from the past.

We are thankful for those who have gone before us, the faith they exhibited and the opportunities God is creating for those who follow. Since 1985, WHPC has grown in its deep-rooted ability to serve Christ through the many diverse ministries which have blossomed as the congregation has grown and the Lord has opened new doors for us to serve. ou might have heard a little something here or there about the music scene in Austin. Chances are, if you aren’t in town for business, your trip has something to do with one of our famous music festivals. If not, you can be fairly certain that the music will touch your visit in some form or fashion while you’re here. Wander the streets of downtown during the day, and you will likely encounter bands unloading equipment for a gig or rehearsing in garages cubbied between old stone buildings. As the evenings descend, the city comes alive and the music takes over, buoying its inhabitants on sweet guitar riffs. Imbued as it is in Austin’s history, music leaves an indelible mark on today’s culture – one that bleeds into the streets of the city and hearts of the people. Austin’s great musical heritage is not a tale told by museum portraits or untouchable artifacts. It lives in the landmark performance venues that gave the city and the musicians a name; it haunts the nighttime establishments packed throughout downtown. From legendary artists like Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who got their start back in the early Austin scene, to relatively new or up-and coming-musicians, the spirit of music is a continuous presence in all aspects of life here. It is this deep dedication that has gained Austin the worthy title of “Live Music Capital of the World.” Austin’s inherited namesake is supremely invoked during any one of its yearly music festivals, including South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun. Lasting anywhere from a couple

of days to an entire week, thousands of music makers and lovers alike flock to the streets of downtown for nonstop aural stimulation and other forms of revelry. The excitement often lasts long into the night, spilling over into the numerous bars, clubs and lounges of Austin in the form of after-parties and impromptu jam sessions. The best aspect of Austin nightlife is that there is always something happening. In any given night you can find a wide variety of energetic live music shows, bumping night clubs and cool cocktail lounges. The most popular is Sixth Street where venues range from cozy pubs to raucous dance clubs, music from raw alternative rock to sweet, soulful blues. Sixth Street is closed to traffic starting on Friday and Saturday nights, and there is always a vigilant police presence for security. For a slightly slower paced, more sophisticated environment, head a couple of blocks over to the Warehouse District. Austin’s rooftop bars provide plenty of options for tippling on top of the world: a unique ambiance combined with panoramic views overlooking the city. Many bars entertain their guests with posh couches and sleek table displays often illuminated by candles and enclosed by transparent curtains, which together create an exclusive and chic experience for locals and visitors. Rooftop bars in the city add a cool element which elevates Austin’s nightlife, literally. “People love to enjoy the weather and the outdoors and they can get the best of both worlds at Lanai. A lounge environment with great cocktails while still enjoying the beautiful weather of Austin,” says Erin Collins, the general manager of one of Austin’s newest rooftop bars, Lanai. Rooftop bars offer smokers a venue in which they don’t have to leave in order to enjoy their cigarettes and cigars. Most Austin bars and restaurants without rooftops, an outdoor porch, or balcony, adhere to the “No indoors smoking” ordinance passed in 2005. “I was surprised that one of the other advantages for guests is that they can smoke on the roof since we have open air. They do not have to leave the establishment to go outside to smoke,” she adds. Many of them also showcase live music and DJ’s who transform the venue into a magical environment. For a romantic date, couples can unwind on the rooftop terraces as they wine and dine while surrounded by picturesque views of historical downtown Austin. Many Austin rooftop lounges offer reservations which can really spice up the evening’s intimacy. “Being on the roof, your view is mainly up and out. You are not looking at the traffic or all of the people walking by on the street level, which helps to make people feel that they have escaped from the rush of everyday life,” exclaims Collins. No night out in Austin is complete without experiencing one of the city’s acclaimed scenic rooftop bars, with their starlit views of the sky and breathtaking silhouettes of skyscrapers. n

ith their unconventional and extraordinary vibe, Austin’s trendsetters have marked their territory beyond the topnotch music scene and into the world of style and glamour. Amidst the avant-garde architectural specimens that have sprouted in the modest downtown grid, a new, chic shopping district has emerged, solidifying Austin as a city suitable for runway divas and fashion enthusiasts of all kinds. The expansion of the urban real estate, including luxury lofts, condos and apartments all across Austin, has catalyzed an innovative form of living and shopping. A concept which has literally materialized into the buildings and stores that harbor the articles of clothing themselves: shop outside the box. Beneath the 15-story high-rise apartments, eclectic and eccentric boutiques feature cutting-edge fashion that transcends clichés and faux pas. At the convenience of the residents who live about these stores, anyone can live and shop without having to cross a single street. The Outdoors- Shopping enthusiasts agree a venue that incorporates the outdoors into the everyday humdrums of the mall is one worth experiencing. Austin is fortunate enough to have two outdoor malls: the up-scale Domain and the Hill Country Galleria. Both offer expansive beauty mixed with dining, entertainment, retail and even residential lofts. Wrapped in nature’s finest wildflowers, native trees, rocky streams and lush hills, the mall has never looked so green. Samples- Free samples don’t just happen at the grocery store. The mini-perfume vials, lipstick tubes, eye shadow smudges and other personal hygiene bottles represent just a few of the great freebies that salespeople distribute in some of your favorite stores. Salsa: Sizzle andAustin’s Tangiest Cuisine

Within the walls of the enticing restaurants that line downtown Austin’s historic streets, locals and visitors that come to gather with friends and family will always find something to satisfy their taste buds. Over warm conversation, the sound of clinking utensils and mouth-watering aromas, all are invited to partake of the best of Central Texas’s offerings from enchiladas and chile con queso to barbeque ribs and schnitzel. Leaving with smiles on their faces and full stomachs, patrons can reflect on the deeply rooted history of Texas that has continuously transformed the face of its legendary cuisine “A cuisine evolves with the arrival of new ethnic influences, new foods introduced in the area, even new appliances or newly discovered cooking methods. So, of course Texas food is not the same as it was 100 years ago or even 25 years ago. It’s just the way we eat in Texas today,” said Terry Thompson-Anderson, culinary teacher and author of three cookbooks, among them Texas on the Plate.

A Brief History:

Indian tribes who first inhabited this state cultivated a diversity of crops and spices that serve as fundamentals in today’s food, such as corn-based dishes with chilies and herbs, usually accompanied by beans and tomatoes. The Spanish, the first Europeans to arrive here, claimed Texas for their mother country in the 16th century and quickly called the Indians

their friends. They combined their diet of rice, pork, chicken, wine, garlic and onions with the native indigenous foods of preColumbian Mexico, including chocolate, chorizo, tomato, vanilla, avocado, guava, papaya, pineapple, chili peppers, beans, squash, peanut, fish and turkey. With its long ties to its southern neighbor, Mexico, it’s no surprise that Texan food shows strong Mexican influences. The cuisine so closely coincides with Mexico’s food that an entirely new genre of food was created, Tex-Mex, which combines traditional Mexican flavors and techniques with American customs. Most of today’s Mexican food is based on Mayan and Aztec traditions combined with culinary trends introduced by the Spanish colonists.

Hispanic foods continue to shape Texas, even in the subtlest of ways. Whether you’re eating chili Frito pie, traditional Texas barbeque, or a classic steak—they are all centered on the strong tradition of vaqueros (cowboys), who herded beef for their supper and used it to make signature dishes. The tradition is carried on into modern day cowboy’s and cowgirl’s standard diet of meat and potatoes. Fine dining restaurants offer the most exceptional cuisine in a formal environment that represents the high-quality of expertise and experience the chefs and staff maintain. Crisp, white table cloths, five-course meals and waiters in tuxedos contribute to the most luxurious service available. Operating on the priciest menu items, fine-dining restaurants provide patrons with the most unique delicacies in the culinary world. Many restaurants use prix fixe menus, or limited menus, that change frequently. ighway 1826 begins to sway like a Hill Country hammock as it makes its way toward Driftwood from Austin. The rhythm speaks of the peaceful beauty that lies just ahead. Only 20 minutes from Austin, this lovely respite boasts spectacular vineyards, unforgettable restaurants, breathtaking Hill Country vistas and the first commercial olive orchard in Central Texas. “This area will be to Austin what Napa Valley is to San Francisco. We will have it all – vineyards, wineries, restaurants, spas and elegant accommodations,” says Scott Roberts, owner of the venerable Salt Lick Restaurant and Driftwood development. In the 1880s when Driftwood began as a supply center for neighboring ranches and farms, Scott Roberts’ family was already established in the area. By 1890, Driftwood had a general store, a cotton gin, post office, a school and churches. The population grew to almost 100 during the middle of the twentieth century, then dwindled to fewer than 25 in the 1970s.

Now Driftwood has been rediscovered. What first drew the Roberts family to the area – the amazing natural beauty – is now bringing others for vacation, relaxation and permanent residence. In 1969, about 100 years after the first members of the Roberts family arrived, Thurman Roberts, Scott’s father decided he loved Driftwood too much to continue his bridge building job that required so much travel. He, his wife Hisako and two sons began to do whatever work they could to replace the income Thurman made at his traveling job. The Salt Lick was the most successful of these ventures. It began with Thurman building a pit (still the centerpiece of the Salt Lick) and cooking and selling his meat to people passing by on the highway. Then came one picnic table so that customers wouldn’t have to dine on the hoods of their cars. The world-renowned barb-que restaurant grew from there and now serves thousands of diners each week hungry for a taste of true Texas bar-b-que.

magine Mama Grace Mandola’s skilled hands weaving back and forth sprinkling the perfect amount of fresh basil over a steaming pot of pasta. As the Mandola family adds one delectable dining experience after another to the restaurant landscape across Texas and beyond, they seem to be taking lessons from the fabulous family cooks, like Grace, who have gone before - make it unique, warm, delicious and inviting. Damian Mandola grew up in the kitchen blessed by his mother’s gracious culinary expertise. Mandola has spent 30 years in the food business developing delightful restaurants like Carrabbas’s, D’Amico’s and Damian’s Cucina Italiana. He has co-authored several cookbooks and even co-hosted a PBS cooking series, “Cucina Amore,” with nephew and Carrabba’s co-

“We make our own soft cheeses, fresh ricotta mozzarella, soppressata, salami, bresaola, pancetta, gelato, breads, egg pasta and wines,” says Damian. “All our wines are Italian varietals grown in Texas. We have 20 acres planted here and four growers in the High Plains.” Trina and Damian fell in love with this property the day they first saw it five years ago. They climbed to the highest hill on the place and soaked in the gorgeous views. Then they descended to the creek and watched clear Hill Country water spilling over the rocks. When a large flock of wild turkey wandered by, Damian and Trina looked at each other and knew they had found home. In stages, the couple eventually purchased 375 acres and spent over two years building their dream home.

Although Damian had talked of retirement, soon after opening the Market in town, he began to discuss his dreams of a winery and restaurant on the property. “Frankly, we fought about the idea,” Trina says. “It was a big commitment. But now I am so glad we did it.”

Is it possible to have a favorite dish in your own restaurant? Trina is a self-proclaimed “dessert queen” who says she adores their Italian doughnuts with honey and homemade vanilla cream. Damian’s favorite dish comes from his mother’s recipe for eggplant parmesan. In Damian’s previous ventures, he had a stellar reputation for quality

food, authenticity and great hospitality. That is the vision he would like to extend here in Driftwood. This year because of the demand for events and weddings on the property, they are adding a 4200-squarefoot banquet facility with a 300-guest capacity. And now that Trina has helped Damian to fulfill his Driftwood dreams, she looks foward to a dream of her own – a luxury day spa on the property. “Maybe that will take a few years but I think it would be great,” she says. So someday there may be even more pleasures to enjoy on the estate. But for now this Tuscan treasure will still draw every guest with open arms and heavenly, hearty food and drink. Driftwood Vineyard A visit to Driftwood Vineyard would be rewarding if only to bask in the beauty of the surrounding landscape dressed in pristine, jade vines and magnificent stands of oaks. The winery and tasting room are perched on the highest point of the Driftwood property with grand views of the vineyard and rolling hills. But there is so much more to savor. Driftwood vineyard has grown to 14 acres focusing on Mediterranean varietals such as Syrah, Viognier and Muscat. They also produce a traditional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The Elliotts sold their entire crop for the first couple of years before getting into the winemaking business. But now the vineyard yields a crop of 60 - 80 tons enabling the winery to produce 7-10 different wines. To the west of the Salt Lick, an upscale vineyard community is in the works. Right now 40 acres of vineyards are already producing. But soon homes will border organic gardens, vineyards and a winery with a tasting room. In addition, a five-star restaurant, lodge, spa, amphitheater and events center will provide entertainment. A general store with wood-fired bakery and gourmet deli is in the works along with plans for antique shops and galleries displaying the work of local artisans. inding yourself in Fredericksburg is truly like finding yourself in a part of the Old World. Among Fredericksburg area attractions are two state parks, one municipal park, one wildlife management area, a national park and a property of the Texas Historical Commission. Enchanted Rock is a 1,643-acre park that is home to the second largest granite dome in North America. The grounds feature 60 primitive campsites, as well as shade and picnic areas. A moderately strenuous trail leads visitors to the top for a spectacular view, while other areas provide challenges for serious rock climbers. Enchanted Rock received its name through Indian folklore that was passed through generations of native tribes. The LBJ State and National Parks offer a historical look at the late President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson. The orientation/visitor center for the national park is located in Johnson City. At the LBJ Ranchlands, a guided bus tour shows visitors the Texas White House, Old Junction School, LBJ’s Birthplace and the Johnson Family cemetery. Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, located approximately three miles from Main Street, features an 18-hole golf course, picnic pavilions, The Live Oak Wilderness Trail, a swimming pool, an RV park and a “fishing hole.” The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area, otherwise known as “The Bat Tunnel,” is open LET US BE YOUR GUIDE TO nightly June through October. The city’s architecture has also been preserved in a beautiful historic district. ounded in 1887 by General Adam R. Johnson, Marble Falls is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country on the Colorado River. Before the dam was built to form Lake Marble Falls, water cascaded over 20-foot ledges which resembled marble, providing a name for the new city. The falls are now underwater and only visible on those rare occasions when the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) lowers the lake for repairs to the dam and boat docks. The first city officials were elected in 1907 when a mayor-alderman form of government was instituted. In 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Crosby Harwood was elected mayor - thus becoming the first woman mayor in the United States to be elected by an all male electorate. However, it was the 866-foot stone monolith called Granite Mountain looming on the town’s western edge that secured Marble Falls’ place in Texas history. It was here that the famed “Texas Pink” granite was quarried to construct the Texas State Capitol Building in Aus-

tin. The stone was a donation from progressive area citizens in exchange for a rail connection with Austin. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad built an extension to Marble Falls from Granite Mountain in 1889, and a post office was also established that year. Granite Mountain is still actively quarried, and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world. Today, it is the natural setting of lakes and hills that makes the Marble Falls/ Lake LBJ area one of the most attractive and popular tourist and retirement destinations in all of Texas. elcome to Pflugerville! “Between a rock and a weird place” as locals know it, Pflugerville is situated in the heart of central Texas between Round Rock and Austin. The City of Pflugerville is 12 minutes from downtown Austin and 15 minutes from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. New times have begun to move Pflugerville from a bedroom community to that of a community with business opportunities with that same small town feel. Pflugerville has a rich German heritage. The city was founded in 1860 when William Bohls established a general store and post office in his residence and named the town in honor of Henry Pfluger. In 1872, residents established a school, and in 1875, a Lutheran Church known today as Immanuel Lutheran Church. From 1980 to 1988, new development in Pflugerville made it the fastest growing community in the state. Forbes’ Magazine recognized Pflugerville in 2008 as one of the fastest growing US suburban cities. Pflugerville has risen from a population of 452 in 1986 to 41,817 in 2008. Some of Pflugerville’s growth is partially due to the newest Texas tollroads – State Highway 130 and State Highway 45. State Highway 130 is a project of the Texas Department of Transportation and is the state’s first highway to be developed under a Comprehensive Development Agreement, allowing the work of property acquisition, design and construction to be undertaken simultaneously. The new SH 130 is a 49 mile tollway extending from Interstate 35 north of Georgetown southward to U.S. 183, southeast of Austin, passing through Williamson and Travis Counties. State Highway 45 North is approximately 13 miles long, extending from Ridgeline Boulevard west of U.S. 183 eastward to State Highway 130. These two tollroads connect in Pflugerville creating many new opportunities for the community. To aid in the growth of the community, Pflugerville thought ahead of the game and created more recreational possibilities by providing a great quality of life by building a 180-acre lake to become Lake Pflugerville - family playground. Leave your city worries behind and take a hill country drive for a relaxing weekend in Wimberley, located approximately 45 minutes south of Austin- a drive which is scenic and lovely. The Wimberley Valley is nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Enjoy the cool shaded quietness of cypress-lined streams, the splendid vistas or just the relaxed, laid back atmosphere. A good place to start your visit is at the Visitors Center located on Ranch Road 12 just across Cypress Creek from the Wimberley Town Square. Wimberley has been a retreat for artists, musicians and writers for many years, and it hosts the most popular Market Day in the area which bring visitors from all over the country. Shoppers come the first Saturday of the month, March through December. Wimberley has outstanding venues for critically acclaimed live theater. EmilyAnn Theater—west of Wimberley on Ranch Road 2325—each year hosts Shakespeare Under the Stars and is also the location for the Christmas Trail of Lights with more than 100 separate sparkling displays. The Annual Wimberley VFW Rodeo is one of the largest in the state and is held on the weekend closest to July 4. Three nights of bull riding, bronc busting, calf roping and much more held at the rodeo grounds at Veterans Memorial Park. If you want to experience a “Norman Rockwell” moment, you must see the July 4th Parade that

goes down the main streets of Wimberley, followed by an old-fashioned Jubilee. Be sure and take in the daily glassblowing demonstrations at the Wimberley Glass Works. Watch talented artists manipulate molten glass into works of art, then visit their on-site gallery. There are two local wineries where visitors may tour the vineyards and wine-making facilities to sample some of the finest in Texas wines. Wimberley has two magnificent natural swimming holes. The Blue Hole, rated the second best swimming hole in Texas, and Cypress Falls in Woodcreek, welcome swimmers with cool clear waters. Cypress Creek also offers a nature trail and hiking (Old Baldy will provide a unique panorama of the Wimberley Valley). Veterans Memorial Plaza, located on a scenic hilltop at EmilyAnn Theater, consists of a United States Flag, a Texas Flag and the flags of each of the armed forces as well as one representing prisoners of war and those missing in action. The newest attraction is Wimberley Zipline Adventures. This incredible adventure gives you a bird’s eye view of the surrounding valley with breathtaking scenery. Begin with trained guides leading you on an educational walking tour-- at the top, the course consists of five ziplines. You will feel like you’re flying as you zoom down the cable!
