Greetings!

Advertising: Senior Account Executive Meagan Staff-Bubela

On behalf of the City of Austin, I would like to welcome you to the Capital City. We are proud to be the home of the University of Texas Longhorns, beautiful landscapes, and some of the best entertainment, shopping and dining in the Lone Star State.

Account Executives Michelle Broyles Dineen Lucido

Austin is a special place, but what makes it unique is hard to define. It’s partly the people - a richly diverse mix of students and tech millionaires, artists and engineers, musicians and entrepreneurs, small-business men and women. It’s partly our cultural scene -- earning the reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World, but that only skims the surface of the arts and entertainment available here. Ultimately it’s the indefinable qualities that make Austin magical.

AUSTIN’S LIFESTYLE

T

he lifestyle in Austin is truly different from any other city in the world. Visitors often ask the question, “What makes Austin so weird or unique?” There are so many answers! From the political scene at the capitol to the abundance of live music venues or the casual dress and atmosphere, people enjoy living in Austin for countless reasons. One simple reason Austinites love their city is the environment. The breathtaking Texas Hill Country and almost yearlong sunshine makes everyone here eager to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Luckily for Austinites and visitors, the city has endless ways to do so. Austin has an abundance of hike and bike trails, outdoor sports locations, and swimming holes. From gazing at the evolving downtown skyline from a kayak on Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake to many locals) to hiking past rock structures on the greenbelt to sitting on an outdoor patio café near one of Austin’s lakes, the idea remains the same: the prestine beauty of Austin is one to be enjoyed. Although Austin has many places to slow down, relax and enjoy life, the business and technology industries also thrive here. The prestigious schools and universities, including the University of Texas and St. Edward’s, provide students from across the

Welcome to the 29th edition of Celebrate Austin! What makes Austin, Texas so irresistable? We have a reputation for southern hospitality and are equally notorious for fantastic live music, a love of nature and a mecca of amazing food. When in Austin, do as the Austinites do, and find an outdoor festival, take a dip to avoid the Texas sun, have an icy cold batini (ask your bartender!) or put your walking shoes on, because you have a lot to see and do. Join us in celebrating the Austin lifestyle! Austin is a fabulous city in which to find amazing and unique attractions and shops. We invite you to explore these local Austin finds that will make your trip simply unforgettable. Whether you are taking a tour, exploring a museum or shopping for souvenirs, our special recommendations are sure to please!

country with a chance to get an education, form new ideas and change the world for the better. As “The Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin is home to famous music events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival and South by Southwest, many famous musicians flock to Austin to showcase their talent, bringing music fans along to enjoy it. However, often unknown local musicians put on the most heartfelt shows, and with its abundance of live music venues, Austin is an oasis for these up and coming musicians. Whether celebrating rock’s roots at a local blues club or dancing to country music in cowboy boots, Austinites can enjoy music from any genre on any day. There are many advantages to living in and visiting Austin, including the hip shops, the lovely scenery, the cooperative weather and the incomparable music. But there is an unspoken, intangible reason that Austin is such an amazing place to live. Something about the incomparable spirit of Austin makes it relaxed yet chic. In Austin, business executives, activists, sports enthusiasts, music lovers, cowboys and students comfortably mix and mingle on Guadalupe Street or listen to music on Sixth Street. It is this unique blend of different types of people that makes every facet of life in Austin so special. n

Celebrate 100 Years of Shiner Beer

Early last century the Czechs and Germans who settled around Shiner, Texas decided to open a brewery. They longed for the beers left behind in their homelands. They needed a brewmaster and looked to the old countries for the right guy. And what a guy they found. Kosmos Spoetzl. A one-time Bavarian soldier and trained brewmaster who came to Texas by way of Egypt and Canada. He bought the brewery, gave it his name and kick-started Shiner down the dirt road toward beer fame. 100 years later, Spoetzl is one of the country’s oldest independent breweries. And every drop of its beer is still made in Shiner, by only 56 employees. You can still feel the Czech and German influence in town – the names on the buildings, a hint of an accent here or there. But the heritage is most apparent in the beer still produced on Brewery Street, very near the spot where it all started in 1909. Take the 90-mile drive from Austin to the quaint town of Shiner, tour the brewery and meet the people who are handcrafting one of America’s best-loved beers. The brewery is closed on weekends. AUSTIN’S LIFESTYLE

Recommending the Best of Austin Why Your Concierge is So Important Live the Austin Lifestyle Like a Local!

Best Wurst Ok, we’re just a cart, but the Austin Chronicle claims “hands-down, the best late night food of the party district!” With locally made sausage, we serve incredible sandwiches — straight and simple — with fresh-cut grilled onions, hot sauerkraut, our own brown mustard and a curry ketchup that’s like nothing you’ve tasted. It’s old world, it’s kitschy, it’s damn good! In New York it’s Grey’s Papaya, LA has Pinks, and New Orleans raves Lucky Dogs, but Austin boasts “The Best Wurst”.

Celebrate Austin recommends the best and finest that Austin has to offer, but there is another source for recommendations: With a reputation for achieving the impossible, your hotel concierge is sure to enhance your stay in Austin and is your best tool for unlocking the secrets of the city. Take the short elevator trip downstairs to take advantage of all that your concierge can offer. Naturally, he or she is able to address the standard requests like making dinner reservations, purchasing tickets to concerts and events, coordinating travel arrangements and booking tours to the best places in Austin, but those just skim the surface. With a slew of personal contacts with local merchants, restaurateurs and service providers, your concierge can meet your needs regardless of how unique your request may seem. In

the mood for Italian and need a place that is pet friendly? Or looking for live music and vegetarian cuisine? Your concierge knows the best spot in town and will book your table so that you may effortlessly enjoy your experience. Whether visiting Austin for business or pleasure, a gift of fresh flowers or box of sweets is a lovely gesture that is sure to be loved by your local friends, family or colleagues. By involving your concierge, it’s a breeze! He or she will suggest the perfect gift for the occasion, place the order and coordinate delivery, making it easy to show your hosts how much you appreciate their hospitality. Nothing else can stand up to the personalized service and care that a concierge is more than happy to provide. Make the most of your time in Austin. Do all you can to take in the city, and leave the rest to a concierge! n

Menu Selection

Bratwurst: German style pork sausage, double ground with nutmeg and pepper. Smoked Pork Italian: A Texas variation of the New York sausage seasoned with cayenne and fennel. Smoked Jalapeno: A pork and beef version of a Texas favorite-the hot link. All Beef: just how it sounds. New York Buttered SaltPotatoes: Yukon Gold New Potatoes boiled in a salt brine and served with real melted butter, green onions and secret spice! (festivals only)

Featured Concierge, Angie Roid: Originally from Oregon, Angie has a background in Food & Nutrition. She moved to Austin two years ago and became familiar with the city quickly through many hours of research and connecting with local businesses. Austin Loves the Water!

Mild climate- Austin sits at 30 degrees latitude, allowing for a glorious subtropical warm season and very brief winters. Last year, Austin had more than 100 days of 90-degree weather, making local lakes and rivers a popular retreat.

Water sports- Austinites are active people and off the water. Visit the shores of Lake Austin, Lake Travis or downtown’s Lady Bird Lake, know as Town Lake to locals, and find numerous rental and touring centers for boats, rowing, kayaks, water skis, jet skis and so much more! Lake side dining- That long languid summer that Austin is famous for has encouraged the growth of an amazing number of lake side restaurants and bars. If you are in the mood for a lazy afternoon in the sunshine coupled with romantic sunsets, breathtaking views and (of course) live music, take a drive along one of the many shores and explore a favorite Austin pasttime. Nature at its best- Austin is graced by brilliant bodies of water. One of the world’s largest natural aquafers, Barton Springs, sits right beside downtown with a year-round temperature of 68 degrees. Combine that with the waterfall at Hamilton Pool and the numerous lakes and rivers, and you are in water heaven! Auditorium shores- The area on the south side of Lady Bird Lake, from Lamar Boulevard east to South First Street, hosts many festivals, concerts and activities, as well as a great location for restaurants and shopping.

Other springtime events include the Texas State Arts Festival, celebrating all things Texan across from the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum; the nature-friendly and folksy Artisans Festival at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center; and the food, music and interactive fun of the Austin Fine Arts Festival. The Pecan Street Festival is a smorgasbord of local music, food and arts & crafts. You can find anything from fine painting and sculptures to funky homemade candles, jewelry and other household items. personifies Austin is reflected in the sheer scope of selection to be had. The streets of downtown offer every genre of art for purchase, in any imaginable setting. Large selections of fine contemporary art hang quietly in peaceful and austere museum-quality settings. Roomfuls of unique sculptures and glasswork are tucked carefully away in tiny antique houses turned galleries. Austin’s offerings also run the gamut of Texas art, whether it’s quirky cowboy-kitsch or sweeping Southwestern-style murals. Being a nationally and internationally recognized mecca for the creative, it is understandable that art finds its way to Austin from across the world. A word of advice for the visitor looking to bring home an Austin original: be sure to find out from where the art or artist hails. True, not all of our artists are Austin born-and-bred, but would you still want that popart silkscreen of Kinky Friedman if you discovered it had been made outside of Texas? In addition to the galleries and museums peppering the downtown scene, there are numerous festivals and exhibitions throughout the year to expand buying opportunities. One of the highlights includes Art City Austin, occurring over the last weekend in April 2009. Each year, hundreds of emerging and independent artists

5 ES Tips for Selecting Great Art

FAV

By Christy Wink

Shop Around- There is absolutely no shortage of opportunities to purchase art in Austin – take advantage of it. Check out as many galleries, auctions, art fairs and exhibitions as time will allow. Look at as much art as possible to find the perfect piece(s).

Know What You’re Buying - Understand the medium or the method by which the art was created, and clarify whether it’s an original or a reproduction. Be sure to ask about the artist if you’re looking for something local. Talk About It- Don’t be shy. Get the seller, be that the gallery owner or the artist themselves, to open up and tell you about the art. They will appreciate the opportunity to communicate their ideas, and you’ll have a better understanding of the piece. Put It in Perspective- So, do you actually have enough space on the blank wall in your den for that 6’x12’ mural you have your eye on? Will it clash with everything else you own? These questions shouldn’t be an ultimate judgment, but they should be considered in the very least. Trust Yourself - Art is an incredibly personal experience and a statement of who you are. Buy it because you love it. Ultimately, greatness is in the eye of the beholder.

ustin’s spiritual side is as abundant and diverse as its many other distinguished qualities. Residents hail from all over the world, allowing the region to embrace a multitude of historical and contemporary belief systems that span the globe, bringing meaning to the millions of lives rooted here. The variety of spiritual organizations, churches and temples located throughout the area represent numerous conceptions of faith and range from Jewish community centers to Hindu temples to non-denominational worship services atop Austin’s Mount Bonnell. As Texas is also a part of the Bible Belt, several fundamentalist Christian churches also blossom throughout the state and serve as the modern-day link to some of our nation’s oldest religions. In addition to being inspirational places of worship and personal discovery, many of the religious structures in Austin also stand as architectural masterpieces that embody major historical significance. For example, Central Christian Church, in downtown Austin, has stood proudly for more than 80 years, exemplifying the

Eclectic movement of the 1920s. Just down the road, San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, another spiritual landmark, serves as the final resting place for the defenders of the Alamo. The cathedral’s first cornerstone was laid in 1738, giving it the privilege of being the oldest in the United States. Thousands continue to attend the cathedral’s masses each weekend and tour buses regularly bring in thousands of visitors eager to view the church’s original sanctuary walls, hand-carved stone baptismal front, believed to have been gifted from King Charles III of Spain in 1759, and a pipe organ built by illustrious St. Louis organ builder George Kilgen in 1884. Wherever you prefer to practice your spirituality or whatever your personal beliefs may be, you’ll have no trouble keeping the faith in Austin –a place that’s known for inspiring the mind, as well as the heart. n

Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough

Texas Author’s Pen Healthy, Vegan Cookbook Inspired by Biblical Fasts Texans have a deep love for God and country. That’s why it’s not hard to believe Texans authored The Daniel’s Fast Cookbook. Grace Bass and Lynda Anderson, a mother daughter team, developed each of the recipes to help people successfully complete this Biblical Fast. The spiritual and health benefits of fasting are well known but many have difficulty with “water only” fasts. In The Daniel’s Fast Cookbook the recipes are based on what Daniel of the Bible requested to eat in order not to be defiled. They are vegan (no dairy, no eggs, no animal products) and whole grain. Included in the book is an explanation of the fast from a biblical perspective with helps for drawing closer to God. Although Grace Bass was born and raised in Texas, she now resides in Tempe, AZ with her husband, Rev. Patrick Bass, senior Pastor of New Life Church of Tempe, and

their four children: Austin, Kaylyn, Jaden and Ana. She is a full time student at Western Governors University and homeschools two of their children. Her mother, Lynda Anderson, currently lives in Lago Vista, Texas- one of the most beautiful places on earth! For 15 years, she was the Founder and CEO of Des Laurier Perfumes, Inc. While enjoying retirement, she enjoys cooking and serving her community. She is widely regarded as a gourmet chef, creating delicious and compelling dishes for the community, her friends and, of course, her family. Grace and Lynda are both very thankful to Rev. Elmer L Towns who has given his endorsement. “I believe in Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough. Yes is a discipline that God has given to the church for renewal, revival and worship of the Lord. I am so glad that Grace Bass and Lynda Anderson have written this cookbook on The Daniel Fast. I pray that God will use it in the lives of many people.” n

Rooted in the Past…

Walking into the Future

By Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church

The history of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church is wedded closely to the growth and development of Westlake Hills: 1874 - William and Sophie Teague deeded two acres of their land to the County School Supervisor for a building to be used as a school/church house. 1923 - Presbyterian Seminary sent a full-time minister to hold services; the church became a mission of University Presbyterian Church. 1928 - A stone church building was erected near the school. The men of the community carted stones in wagons from the Eanes-Marshall ranch and barrels of water for mortar as they did construction themselves. Years later, the Austin Fire department gave the

church a bell that had been used to call volunteer firemen. The bell’s beautiful tone could be heard through the hills on Sunday morning. The building was dedicated December 11, 1932, and called Eanes Chapel. 1954 - Eanes Chapel was renamed Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in April. 1956 - A new brick church was built on Westlake Drive and Bee Caves Road. In the early 60’s an education wing was added and a white stone manse was built near the church. 1985 - The present church at Bee Caves Road and Barton Creek Drive was dedicated in October. The church bell has been moved each time the church moved as part of its roots from the past.

We are thankful for those who have gone before us, the faith they exhibited and the opportunities God is creating for those who follow. Since 1985, WHPC has grown in its deep-rooted ability to serve Christ through the many diverse ministries which have blossomed as the congregation has grown and the Lord has opened new doors for us to serve. The strong, spiritual convictions of our leaders have guided us in understanding the biblical mandate for supporting the Kingdom of God as we have branched out in ministry through the years. As we walk by faith into the future, we at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church invite you into God’s larger story as we follow Christ together. n

he Austin region, with a population of about 1.6 million people, ranks fourth among the country’s 200 largest metropolitan areas, according to the Milken Institute and Greenstreet Real Estate Partners’ 2008 Best Performing Cities list. Based on such criteria as job creations, competitive salaries and growth of technology, Austin outperforms many other areas of the country and excels in sustaining jobs and economic growth. Even in a sluggish nationwide economy, Forbes’ has just listed Austin, Texas as one of the best places to spend your dollar on a list of where money goes the furthest in the current market. Affordable housing, low gas prices, sluggish inflation and a healthy job market make Austin very appealing. Nestled in the middle of the Lone Star State, Austin is a shining star in the energy and technology sectors. To make Austin even more appealing, Travel+ Leisure just gave the Capital of Texas 2nd place for its friendliness and athleticism and 3rd place for intelligence; about 40% of adult Austinites hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, according to bizjournal.com. The music and entertainment sector of Austin adds to its success, with the week-long and world-famous South by Southwest Festival and Conference and the weekend-long Austin City Limits Festival, combined with other music festivals pumping millions a year into the Austin economy. The success generated by Austin-filmed television series “Friday Night Lights” and movies such as Spy Kids, Sin City

and Secondhand Lions have added a new level excitement to the urban mecca that has become Austin. The city’s support over its growing entertainment industry gives it a welcome edge and different perspective in an economy otherwise focused on technology, education and politics. Austin enjoys a successful technology sector and is well-known for its universities, but it still maintains its “weirdness” by attracting unique businesses from around the country to make a new home in the “Live Music Capital of the World.” This year, ArtistForce.com, the Los Angeles-based business platform and professional marketplace for the live entertainment industry announced the decision to relocate its sales, marketing and software development teams to Austin, according to the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. Joining the Austin corporate scene is Twisted Pixel Games, Setcom Corporation and Clean Technology and Sustainable Industries Org. The healthy and robust economy, combined with an active, youthful city makes Austin an attractive location to start your business. The mild humid subtropical climate allows for a lot of outdoor activity and sprawling the corporate campuses makes the 40+ acre campus of the University of Texas extraordinarily accessible. Austin is a green and eco-friendly city, interested in growth and modernism, maintaining a quaint and rustic downtown scene while melding effortlessly with the sprawling Texas Hill Country around it. n

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

ou might have heard a little something here or there about the music scene in Austin. Chances are, if you aren’t in town for business, your trip has something to do with one of our famous music festivals. If not, you can be fairly certain that the music will touch your visit in some form or fashion while you’re here. Wander the streets of downtown during the day, and you will likely encounter bands unloading equipment for a gig or rehearsing in garages cubbied between old stone buildings. As the evenings descend, the city comes alive and the music takes over, buoying its inhabitants on sweet guitar riffs. Imbued as it is in Austin’s history, music leaves an indelible mark on today’s culture – one that bleeds into the streets of the city and hearts of the people. Austin’s great musical heritage is not a tale told by museum portraits or untouchable artifacts. It lives in the landmark performance venues that gave the city and the musicians a name; it haunts the nighttime establishments packed throughout downtown. From legendary artists like Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who got their start back in the early Austin scene, to relatively new or up-and coming-musicians, the spirit of music is a continuous presence in all aspects of life here. It is this deep dedication that has gained Austin the worthy title of “Live Music Capital of the World.” Austin’s inherited namesake is supremely invoked during any one of its yearly music festivals, including South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun. Lasting anywhere from a couple

of days to an entire week, thousands of music makers and lovers alike flock to the streets of downtown for nonstop aural stimulation and other forms of revelry. The excitement often lasts long into the night, spilling over into the numerous bars, clubs and lounges of Austin in the form of after-parties and impromptu jam sessions. The best aspect of Austin nightlife is that there is always something happening. In any given night you can find a wide variety of energetic live music shows, bumping night clubs and cool cocktail lounges. The most popular is Sixth Street where venues range from cozy pubs to raucous dance clubs, music from raw alternative rock to sweet, soulful blues. Sixth Street is closed to traffic starting on Friday and Saturday nights, and there is always a vigilant police presence for security. For a slightly slower paced, more sophisticated environment, head a couple of blocks over to the Warehouse District. Spanning along Fourth Street from Guadalupe to Congress, you’ll find a vibrant yet still laid-back selection of cocktail lounges, wine bars and tap houses. Looking for ultra hip? Check out SoCo, an eight-block strip of South Congress that nurtures and fosters the funky little bohemian spirit in every Austinite. Whatever you’re doing for the evening in Austin, get into the vibe and find some great music. Just duck into the nearest dive – you might very well discover the next big act coming out of Austin… or is that the phantom wail of Janis echoing off those weathered walls? n

Old Pastime Makes New Buzz! Sports on the Big Screen

THIRD BASESPORTS BAR WWW.THIRDBASESPORTSBAR.COM

Sports lover? Looking for a great place to watch the game and avoid the crazy Texas weather of either blaring heat or the frigged cold? Sports Bars are the place to be to enjoy the big game. You can catch just about any type of sport on the big screens in comfort. Say you are looking forward to the big UT game, but your favorite pro team is playing at the same time. No problem! You can watch both on two separate screens in the same room. You will still be able to share in the excitement without the hassle of the crowds. Sports bars aren’t just for male bonding anymore. The sports bar atmosphere is as much for the hip crowd as it is for the family friendly bunch. And don’t forget about the cold beverages and hot meals. They beat the concession lines for a half-spilled beer and cold hot dogs or popcorn once you finally get back to your seat any day. Austinites love their award-winning University of Texas collegiate athletes and hate to miss a game, so you will most likely find them at the nearest tavern with the game on one plasma, and the pro Austin Aztecs (Soccer) and Austin Toros (basketball) playing on the other. Sure tailgating is fun and the game is exciting, but you can’t beat the fun and excitement you experience in a relaxed atmosphere. n

the New Bar Scene

Austin’s rooftop bars provide plenty of options for tippling on top of the world: a unique ambiance combined with panoramic views overlooking the city. Many bars entertain their guests with posh couches and sleek table displays often illuminated by candles and enclosed by transparent curtains, which together create an exclusive and chic experience for locals and visitors. Rooftop bars in the city add a cool element which elevates Austin’s nightlife, literally. “People love to enjoy the weather and the outdoors and they can get the best of both worlds at Lanai. A lounge environment with great cocktails while still enjoying the beautiful weather of Austin,” says Erin Collins, the general manager of one of Austin’s newest rooftop bars, Lanai. Rooftop bars offer smokers a venue in which they don’t have to leave in order to enjoy their cigarettes and cigars. Most Austin bars and restaurants without rooftops, an outdoor porch, or balcony, adhere to the “No indoors smoking” ordinance passed in 2005. “I was surprised that one of the other advantages for guests is that they can smoke on the roof since we have open air. They do not have to leave the establishment to go outside to smoke,” she adds. Many of them also showcase live music and DJ’s who transform the venue into a magical environment. For a romantic date, couples can unwind on the rooftop terraces as they wine and dine while surrounded by picturesque views of historical downtown Austin. Many Austin rooftop lounges offer reservations which can really spice up the evening’s intimacy. “Being on the roof, your view is mainly up and out. You are not looking at the traffic or all of the people walking by on the street level, which helps to make people feel that they have escaped from the rush of everyday life,” exclaims Collins. No night out in Austin is complete without experiencing one of the city’s acclaimed scenic rooftop bars, with their starlit views of the sky and breathtaking silhouettes of skyscrapers. n

ith their unconventional and extraordinary vibe, Austin’s trendsetters have marked their territory beyond the topnotch music scene and into the world of style and glamour. Amidst the avant-garde architectural specimens that have sprouted in the modest downtown grid, a new, chic shopping district has emerged, solidifying Austin as a city suitable for runway divas and fashion enthusiasts of all kinds. The expansion of the urban real estate, including luxury lofts, condos and apartments all across Austin, has catalyzed an innovative form of living and shopping. A concept which has literally materialized into the buildings and stores that harbor the articles of clothing themselves: shop outside the box. Beneath the 15-story high-rise apartments, eclectic and eccentric boutiques feature cutting-edge fashion that transcends clichés and faux pas. At the convenience of the residents who live about these stores, anyone can live and shop without having to cross a single street. Tourists and Austinites alike can easily become lost in a myriad of exclusive shops that line historical downtown districts, as well as areas in the northern and western parts of the city. Each has its own share of specialty stores and chic boutiques and authentic collections of local and international designer-wear, according to the Gridskipper, a fashion travel guide that rates cities

throughout the world. Austin’s homegrown stylists, designers and artists express their individual flavor, each one contributing to this continuously evolving and progressive city. Impressive sculptures with intricate detailing; timeless and elegant ball gowns; edgy handbags that imitate top-of-the-line brands; hip floral sun dresses; hand-embroidered guitar straps; and unique, funky impressionistic paintings entice even the most ambivalent window shoppers. Taking a peek inside the multitude of stores that have established Austin as the forefront for shopping never looked so appealing. “A cool, spring day wandering down South Congress or South Lamar as I venture into a few shops to pick up unique clothing items or some pieces of art- that’s what I call an ideal shopping experience,” said Katie Walthall, a local jewelry maker. Outdoor malls wrapped in verdant nature, rolling hills, native trees and streams create an entirely new shopping experience only fit for Austin’s year-round pleasant weather. A social evolution in shopping, a phrase coined by the Hill Country Galleria, Austin’s shopping scene has become a phenomenon any style fiend who craves the newest fads can appreciate. n

By Brenna Burkarth

Exercise- Walking briskly, or even jogging in between stores to get ahead of the crowds, can make anyone break a sweat, especially during Texas’s infamous sweltering summers. Consider going shopping as killing two birds with one stone next time you need to go to the gym, but also need a killer black dress for an upcoming social event. Shopping in the undulating hills Austin was built upon can be a great opportunity for a cardio workout.

Free Snacks- On the first Thursday of every month, the boutiques on South Congress host a special event any shopping aficionado can appreciate. Starting at about 5 p.m. and lasting until approximately 10 p.m., visitors can peruse all of the store’s discounted items while enjoying appetizers and drinks provided by each boutique. Crackers, cheese, wine, margaritas and other beverages (depending on the store) re-energize shoppers and create a fun, social atmosphere that the “First Thursday” experience is known for. Mailing Lists- After a successful shopping spree at most any fashionista’s beloved store, salespeople often ask if you would like to subscribe to their mailing list. By joining their preferred customers list, you can gain coupons, gift certificates on your birthday and be informed of any upcoming sales or other events. This is a perfect way to begin saving at some of the pricier stores and getting the first class treatment you deserve. The Outdoors- Shopping enthusiasts agree a venue that incorporates the outdoors into the everyday humdrums of the mall is one worth experiencing. Austin is fortunate enough to have two outdoor malls: the up-scale Domain and the Hill Country Galleria. Both offer expansive beauty mixed with dining, entertainment, retail and even residential lofts. Wrapped in nature’s finest wildflowers, native trees, rocky streams and lush hills, the mall has never looked so green. Samples- Free samples don’t just happen at the grocery store. The mini-perfume vials, lipstick tubes, eye shadow smudges and other personal hygiene bottles represent just a few of the great freebies that salespeople distribute in some of your favorite stores. You might even be lucky enough to leave with free lingerie or an accessory, making anyone’s shopping experience extra special.

Austin’s Hidden Treasures Some of Austin’s most beloved shopping is found just across Congress Bridge and nestled in the crooks and crannies of the “Southern Streets,” lovingly referred to as SoLa, SoFi and SoCo. South Lamar, South First and South Congress make up a mecca of vintgage and trendy shopping, local restaurants and pubs where pizza and coffee abound and lots of fun surprises await you. Take a bike or put on those comfortable shoes because you will find yourself never wanting to leave the shaded, oak-lined streets of these amazing neighborhoods and the treasures you will find within them.

Callahan’s

General Store Welcome to Callahan’s General Store -- an Austin landmark for more than 25 years! In 1978, we set up a general store right next to our Feed & Milling Company to serve nearby ranchers who didn’t want to make the long drive into the Austin. Now we find ourselves in the Austin metropolitan area between downtown and the airport. We provide just about anything one would need to live a simple life at home on the range: from live baby ducks and chicks to, horseshoes to saddles, and, of course, a full line of Stetson cowboy hats.

Austin’S fierce, locally-driven economy has allowed many longstanding restaurants and diners to cultivate nearperfect special dishes, having passed the test of many tasters for decades. By Shannon Skinto

ining in Austin is a pure treat! Legendary barbeque has been perfected in the heart of the Lone Star State for more than a century. Discover smoked brisket with tender meat that falls from the bone, tantalizing local sauces and tons of ribs, local sausage and rich, hearty sides like stewed pinto beans and corn chowder. Mexican food has transformed into Tex-Mex, a sizzling concoction of American-infused south-of-the-border dishes that will drive your taste buds up the wall with a myriad of bursting flavors with mouth-watering queso drizzled over most dishes. Austin’s nature-loving and eco-friendly mindset has inspired dozens of vegan, vegetarian and organic restaurants that make their salsas and salads right from the backyard. Is your tummy rumbling yet? Austin’s fierce, locally driven economy has allowed many long-standing restaurants and diners to cultivate nearperfect special dishes, having passed the test of many tasters for decades. Try down-home cookin’ hole-in-the-walls for Southern fare or search out roadside tamale and taco stands. Find pleasure in the historic menus that are nestled throughout downtown and the surrounding areas. Austinite’s love Americana food and many ethnic restaurants incorporate the basics into their menus. From burgers to salads, there is something for even the pickiest eater.

Austin has a reputation for being a casual city, and that is a fair, accurate description. However, don’t think for a second that these Texans don’t love their luxurious steakhouses and fine dining establishments. Italians must love Central Texas- many of Austin’s finest Italian restaurants offer spectacular pasta dishes and some even celebrate their own wine, harvested from the plentiful hill country surrounding Austin. Steakhouses range from casual to fine and the robust Texas cattle have tender meat worthy of any critic. Steakhouses are especially popular; this is Texas after all. The impeccable quality of Texas beef and the talented chefs who prepare such delicacies should not be missed. As the title of this publication indicates, Austinites love to celebrate and show their love of not only music, but also food, with festivals. Local foodies know Austin as home to the world’s largest hot sauce festival, Texas Hill Country Food and Wine Festival and a festival entirely devoted to chocolate confections. Our city offers a wide range of culinary possibilities. Every outing can be a little different, no matter what your budget happens to be. When tourists look beyond their expectations, they truly experience Austin, and in doing so, take a little piece of the heart of Austin with them. n

Hot Hot Hot! Sauce—If you live life on the oh-so-spicy edge, and happen to be traveling in the Fall, then you will love Austin’s Hot Sauce Festival. With on-going live music all day and hundreds of entries (sauces) to judge (taste), this delicious and free event may not make your wallet sweat but we can’t promise anything for your taste buds! Grapes of Austin—The beautiful landscape of Austin is perfect for wine-making, and the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival is the place to taste it all! Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or just someone who enjoys a good glass, don’t miss out on this delectable event. Hearty Hamburgers—The cattle land of Texas sure has its advantages! Austin is full of tasty burgers, with just about any topping you can think of—keeping Austin’s food as eccentric as the city itself. Sassy Steak—Have a hankering for Texas style beef? Sink your teeth into a juicy fillet of world famous Angus, straight from the ranges of the Lone Star State. Find a local steakhouse for the finest cuts. You won’t be disappointed! Bar-B-Que—What else is there to say? Top it off with any of Austin’s flavorful BBQ Sauces and you’ll have one of Austin’s best authentic meals!

Salsa: Sizzle andAustin’s Tangiest Cuisine

Within the walls of the enticing restaurants that line downtown Austin’s historic streets, locals and visitors that come to gather with friends and family will always find something to satisfy their taste buds. Over warm conversation, the sound of clinking utensils and mouth-watering aromas, all are invited to partake of the best of Central Texas’s offerings from enchiladas and chile con queso to barbeque ribs and schnitzel. Leaving with smiles on their faces and full stomachs, patrons can reflect on the deeply rooted history of Texas that has continuously transformed the face of its legendary cuisine “A cuisine evolves with the arrival of new ethnic influences, new foods introduced in the area, even new appliances or newly discovered cooking methods. So, of course Texas food is not the same as it was 100 years ago or even 25 years ago. It’s just the way we eat in Texas today,” said Terry Thompson-Anderson, culinary teacher and author of three cookbooks, among them Texas on the Plate.

A Brief History:

Indian tribes who first inhabited this state cultivated a diversity of crops and spices that serve as fundamentals in today’s food, such as corn-based dishes with chilies and herbs, usually accompanied by beans and tomatoes. The Spanish, the first Europeans to arrive here, claimed Texas for their mother country in the 16th century and quickly called the Indians

their friends. They combined their diet of rice, pork, chicken, wine, garlic and onions with the native indigenous foods of preColumbian Mexico, including chocolate, chorizo, tomato, vanilla, avocado, guava, papaya, pineapple, chili peppers, beans, squash, peanut, fish and turkey. With its long ties to its southern neighbor, Mexico, it’s no surprise that Texan food shows strong Mexican influences. The cuisine so closely coincides with Mexico’s food that an entirely new genre of food was created, Tex-Mex, which combines traditional Mexican flavors and techniques with American customs. Most of today’s Mexican food is based on Mayan and Aztec traditions combined with culinary trends introduced by the Spanish colonists.

Photo courtesy of Polvos (far left), Sau Paulo (middle) and La Palapa (far right). Story by Brenna Burkarth and staff

Hispanic foods continue to shape Texas, even in the subtlest of ways. Whether you’re eating chili Frito pie, traditional Texas barbeque, or a classic steak—they are all centered on the strong tradition of vaqueros (cowboys), who herded beef for their supper and used it to make signature dishes. The tradition is carried on into modern day cowboy’s and cowgirl’s standard diet of meat and potatoes. As we all know, “everything is BIGGER in Texas,” and that includes our Texassized “pantry.” Grannies and executive chefs alike are easily inspired. With such an array of ever-evolving ethnic influences to pull from, cooks in the Lone Star State can always please a crowd. n

Fine dining restaurants offer the most exceptional cuisine in a formal environment that represents the high-quality of expertise and experience the chefs and staff maintain. Crisp, white table cloths, five-course meals and waiters in tuxedos contribute to the most luxurious service available. Operating on the priciest menu items, fine-dining restaurants provide patrons with the most unique delicacies in the culinary world. Many restaurants use prix fixe menus, or limited menus, that change frequently. Customers have the advantage of eating seasonal items at their peak of freshness, which is one benefit of the smaller, rotating menus. Chefs exercise great variety and creativity when designing menus in order to showcase their talent. Customers should be more attentive to their dress code, which is much more formal than in normal dining establishments. Many fine dining services escorting patrons to the table, holding the chair for women, crumbing the table in between courses and replacing linen napkins if the patron leaves the table. The rigorously trained waiters should also be able to thoroughly explain dishes without notes, assist the patron in making a dining choice and serve food directly on the plate at the table. Music plays subtly in the background to reflect the theme of the restaurant, such as classical for a traditional restaurant or jazz for a modern restaurant, and the lighting should be dim to create a romantic atmosphere. No detail is ever too small to pay attention to in fine dining. n

Napkin Knowledge: If you leave the table during the dinner, place your napkin on your chair. If your napkin drops to the floor, it is acceptable for you to pick it up. When you have finished eating, the napkin should be placed tidily to the left side of your plate (but not on your plate).

Getting Started: You must not start eating

Map of the Texas Hill Country

Map Courtesy of the Texas Hill Country Wineries Story by Staff

This region of rolling hills and snaking rivers extends from Austin on the eastern boundary and northward through the Highland Lakes, continuing west as far as Junction and Uvalde before brushing back to the northern edge of San Antonio. While the official state map doesn’t specifically identify the Hill Country, it’s easy to find. It’s the brown semi-circular patch in the middle of the state marked by Edwards Plateau, an elevated piece of land where the plains from north Texas meet the flat, brush country

DESTINATIONS

The Texas Hill Country of south and east Texas and hardwood forests level off into west Texas deserts. Within these vast boundaries lie some of the state’s most beautiful scenery, friendliest townspeople and volumes of history. President Lydon Baines Johnson was born and raised in the Hill Country. His political career took him to the pinnacle of world power, yet he never forgot his roots. Every chance he could, he came home to his ranch dubbed The White House on the Pedernales (pronounced Purd-nal-es). Just hop in your

car, roll down the windows, and come along for the ride to see what makes the Texas Hill Country so special. The Texas Hill Country is quickly becoming a huge success in the wine industry. Delicious reds and whites flow from the beautiful valleys and rolling hills around Austin, which has become the #2 fastest-growing wine destination in the nation, according to Orbitz. For a complete key of the wineries listed above, please visit the inside back cover of this issue of Celebrate Austin. n

The ideal Driftwood experience must include Since 1969, The Salt Lick has been serving up mouth-watering brisket, sausage, and ribs that have been lauded by food critics on Rachel Ray, the Today Show, and the Travel Channel.

H

ighway 1826 begins to sway like a Hill Country hammock as it makes its way toward Driftwood from Austin. The rhythm speaks of the peaceful beauty that lies just ahead. Only 20 minutes from Austin, this lovely respite boasts spectacular vineyards, unforgettable restaurants, breathtaking Hill Country vistas and the first commercial olive orchard in Central Texas. “This area will be to Austin what Napa Valley is to San Francisco. We will have it all – vineyards, wineries, restaurants, spas and elegant accommodations,” says Scott Roberts, owner of the venerable Salt Lick Restaurant and Driftwood development. In the 1880s when Driftwood began as a supply center for neighboring ranches and farms, Scott Roberts’ family was already established in the area. By 1890, Driftwood had a general store, a cotton gin, post office, a school and churches. The population grew to almost 100 during the middle of the twentieth century, then dwindled to fewer than 25 in the 1970s.

Now Driftwood has been rediscovered. What first drew the Roberts family to the area – the amazing natural beauty – is now bringing others for vacation, relaxation and permanent residence. In 1969, about 100 years after the first members of the Roberts family arrived, Thurman Roberts, Scott’s father decided he loved Driftwood too much to continue his bridge building job that required so much travel. He, his wife Hisako and two sons began to do whatever work they could to replace the income Thurman made at his traveling job. The Salt Lick was the most successful of these ventures. It began with Thurman building a pit (still the centerpiece of the Salt Lick) and cooking and selling his meat to people passing by on the highway. Then came one picnic table so that customers wouldn’t have to dine on the hoods of their cars. The world-renowned barb-que restaurant grew from there and now serves thousands of diners each week hungry for a taste of true Texas bar-b-que.

magine Mama Grace Mandola’s skilled hands weaving back and forth sprinkling the perfect amount of fresh basil over a steaming pot of pasta. As the Mandola family adds one delectable dining experience after another to the restaurant landscape across Texas and beyond, they seem to be taking lessons from the fabulous family cooks, like Grace, who have gone before - make it unique, warm, delicious and inviting. Damian Mandola grew up in the kitchen blessed by his mother’s gracious culinary expertise. Mandola has spent 30 years in the food business developing delightful restaurants like Carrabbas’s, D’Amico’s and Damian’s Cucina Italiana. He has co-authored several cookbooks and even co-hosted a PBS cooking series, “Cucina Amore,” with nephew and Carrabba’s co-

founder Johnny Carrabba. In 2006, he and his wife Trina opened Mandola’s Italian Market in The Triangle at Lamar Boulevard and West 47th Street in Austin.

Damian’s Dream Now Mandola Estate Winery and Restaurant rise from the Driftwood countryside. With the help of partners Stan and Lisa Duchman, both Houston physicians, the Mandolas have delighted vacationers and residents for the past two years with Italian hospitality, world-class cuisine, breathtaking vistas, and magnificent architecture that make you feel you have been transported to Tuscany. You will sense the embrace of Mandola hospitality as you savor fine wines and sample delightful family recipes.

“We make our own soft cheeses, fresh ricotta mozzarella, soppressata, salami, bresaola, pancetta, gelato, breads, egg pasta and wines,” says Damian. “All our wines are Italian varietals grown in Texas. We have 20 acres planted here and four growers in the High Plains.” Trina and Damian fell in love with this property the day they first saw it five years ago. They climbed to the highest hill on the place and soaked in the gorgeous views. Then they descended to the creek and watched clear Hill Country water spilling over the rocks. When a large flock of wild turkey wandered by, Damian and Trina looked at each other and knew they had found home. In stages, the couple eventually purchased 375 acres and spent over two years building their dream home.

Although Damian had talked of retirement, soon after opening the Market in town, he began to discuss his dreams of a winery and restaurant on the property. “Frankly, we fought about the idea,” Trina says. “It was a big commitment. But now I am so glad we did it.”

Is it possible to have a favorite dish in your own restaurant? Trina is a self-proclaimed “dessert queen” who says she adores their Italian doughnuts with honey and homemade vanilla cream. Damian’s favorite dish comes from his mother’s recipe for eggplant parmesan. In Damian’s previous ventures, he had a stellar reputation for quality

food, authenticity and great hospitality. That is the vision he would like to extend here in Driftwood. This year because of the demand for events and weddings on the property, they are adding a 4200-squarefoot banquet facility with a 300-guest capacity. And now that Trina has helped Damian to fulfill his Driftwood dreams, she looks foward to a dream of her own – a luxury day spa on the property. “Maybe that will take a few years but I think it would be great,” she says. So someday there may be even more pleasures to enjoy on the estate. But for now this Tuscan treasure will still draw every guest with open arms and heavenly, hearty food and drink. Mama Grace would be proud.

Driftwood Vineyard A visit to Driftwood Vineyard would be rewarding if only to bask in the beauty of the surrounding landscape dressed in pristine, jade vines and magnificent stands of oaks. The winery and tasting room are perched on the highest point of the Driftwood property with grand views of the vineyard and rolling hills. But there is so much more to savor. Driftwood vineyard has grown to 14 acres focusing on Mediterranean varietals such as Syrah, Viognier and Muscat. They also produce a traditional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The Elliotts sold their entire crop for the first couple of years before getting into the winemaking business. But now the vineyard yields a crop of 60 - 80 tons enabling the winery to produce 7-10 different wines. You can bring a picnic lunch and enjoy wine on their 1,000-square-foot cliffside deck or call ahead and have them cater for groups of 10 or more.

The Bella Vista Ranch grows both olives and grapes.

Bella Vista Ranch As you travel toward Wimberley from Driftwood, you will have the opportunity to visit The Bella Vista Ranch. The Ranch was designed to reflect a traditional Italian family farm with over 1,000 producing olive trees, a frantoio (olive press), vineyard, winery, a Red Brangus herd and many seasonal fruit and vegetable specialties. Sample their fresh pressed Texas Extra Virgin olive oil. After harvesting the Texas olive trees, all pressing, milling and bottling operations are performed in a frantoio on the Ranch. Bella Vista Cellars, also located on the Ranch, is a winery that hand-crafts country wines. Using fruit grown on the ranch, as well as the highest quality grapes grown locally, they create Italian varietals and an offering of fruit wines including a popular blackberry wine.

Mary Stone Scott Roberts is developing a vineyard community to the west of the Salt Lick.

Mary Stone Onion Creek meanders through Driftwood.

To the west of the Salt Lick, an upscale vineyard community is in the works. Right now 40 acres of vineyards are already producing. But soon homes will border organic gardens, vineyards and a winery with a tasting room. In addition, a five-star restaurant, lodge, spa, amphitheater and events center will provide entertainment. A general store with wood-fired bakery and gourmet deli is in the works along with plans for antique shops and galleries displaying the work of local artisans. Four and one-half acres will be organic vegetable gardens and 10 acres will be organic fig, persimmon, and olive trees. Watching the progress of this development might spawn in the vacationer a desire to put down roots.

inding yourself in Fredericksburg is truly like finding yourself in a part of the Old World. Fredericksburg, with its German flair, historic buildings, attractions, outdoor activities, shopping and fine food, offers something for the entire family. Fredericksburg has always prized its deep German roots that stem from its founding in 1846 by a group of German settlers led by John O. Meusebach. Among Fredericksburg area attractions are two state parks, one municipal park, one wildlife management area, a national park and a property of the Texas Historical Commission. They are the National Museum of the Pacific War, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, LBJ State and National Historical Parks, Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park and The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area. The National Museum of the Pacific War is dedicated to everyone who served in World War II under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Enchanted Rock is a 1,643-acre park that is home to the second largest granite dome in North America. The grounds feature 60 primitive campsites, as well as shade and picnic areas. A moderately strenuous trail leads visitors to the top for a spectacular view, while other areas provide challenges for serious rock climbers. Enchanted Rock received its name through Indian folklore that was passed through generations of native tribes. The LBJ State and National Parks offer a historical look at the late President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson. The orientation/visitor center for the national park is located in Johnson City. At the LBJ Ranchlands, a guided bus tour shows visitors the Texas White House, Old Junction School, LBJ’s Birthplace and the Johnson Family cemetery. Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, located approximately three miles from Main Street, features an 18-hole golf course, picnic pavilions, The Live Oak Wilderness Trail, a swimming pool, an RV park and a “fishing hole.” The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area, otherwise known as “The Bat Tunnel,” is open LET US BE YOUR GUIDE TO nightly June through October. This abandoned railroad tunnel has become home to over one million Mexican free-tailed bats, which emerge each evening around dusk. The city’s architecture has also been preserved in a beautiful historic district. One of the outstanding features in the historical district are the quaint Sunday Houses, which are very small homes built in town by the German pioneers. In addition to attractions, Fredericksburg is always brimming with activity with more than 100 special events, concerts and festivals held annually. Events include: Fourth of July Parade, Night In Old Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg Inter-Tribal Powwow, Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest, Oktoberfest, horse racing, arts and crafts fairs, homes tours, Gillespie County Fair, Weihnachten in Fredericksburg and many more. F

ounded in 1887 by General Adam R. Johnson, Marble Falls is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country on the Colorado River. Before the dam was built to form Lake Marble Falls, water cascaded over 20-foot ledges which resembled marble, providing a name for the new city. The falls are now underwater and only visible on those rare occasions when the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) lowers the lake for repairs to the dam and boat docks. The first city officials were elected in 1907 when a mayor-alderman form of government was instituted. In 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Crosby Harwood was elected mayor - thus becoming the first woman mayor in the United States to be elected by an all male electorate. However, it was the 866-foot stone monolith called Granite Mountain looming on the town’s western edge that secured Marble Falls’ place in Texas history. It was here that the famed “Texas Pink” granite was quarried to construct the Texas State Capitol Building in Aus-

tin. The stone was a donation from progressive area citizens in exchange for a rail connection with Austin. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad built an extension to Marble Falls from Granite Mountain in 1889, and a post office was also established that year. Granite Mountain is still actively quarried, and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world. Today, it is the natural setting of lakes and hills that makes the Marble Falls/ Lake LBJ area one of the most attractive and popular tourist and retirement destinations in all of Texas. When exploring Marble Falls, do not miss these amazing sites: The Marble Falls Depot, Granite Mountain, Governor O.M. elcome to Pflugerville! “Between a rock and a weird place” as locals know it, Pflugerville is situated in the heart of central Texas between Round Rock and Austin. The City of Pflugerville is 12 minutes from downtown Austin and 15 minutes from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. New times have begun to move Pflugerville from a bedroom community to that of a community with business opportunities with that same small town feel. Pflugerville has a rich German heritage. The city was founded in 1860 when William Bohls established a general store and post office in his residence and named the town in honor of Henry Pfluger. In 1872, residents established a school, and in 1875, a Lutheran Church known today as Immanuel Lutheran Church. From 1980 to 1988, new development in Pflugerville made it the fastest growing community in the state. Forbes’ Magazine recognized Pflugerville in 2008 as one of the fastest growing US suburban cities. Pflugerville has risen from a population of 452 in 1986 to 41,817 in 2008. Some of Pflugerville’s growth is partially due to the newest Texas tollroads – State Highway 130 and State Highway 45. State Highway 130 is a project of the Texas Department of Transportation and is the state’s first highway to be developed under a Comprehensive Development Agreement, allowing the work of property acquisition, design and construction to be undertaken simultaneously. The new SH 130 is a 49 mile tollway extending from Interstate 35 north of Georgetown southward to U.S. 183, southeast of Austin, passing through Williamson and Travis Counties. State Highway 45 North is approximately 13 miles long, extending from Ridgeline Boulevard west of U.S. 183 eastward to State Highway 130. These two tollroads connect in Pflugerville creating many new opportunities for the community. To aid in the growth of the community, Pflugerville thought ahead of the game and created more recreational possibilities by providing a great quality of life by building a 180-acre lake to become Lake Pflugerville - family playground. Located at the intersection of Weiss Lane and Pflugerville Parkway,
