BUILDING UP PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN SHANNON

Ground has been broken on the long-awaited Carolina Square on Franklin Street, which will include 42,000 square feet of retail, 159,000 square feet of office space and 246 apartments. The expected opening date is August 2017. On the site of the former University Square, the $123-million complex will also house Carolina Performing Arts’ The Core at Carolina Square, an 8,500-square-foot lab, studio and theater space.
