UNC Asian American Center UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and associate professor of English and comparative literature Heidi Kim cut a ceremonial ribbon on Aug. 27 to officially open the physical space for the UNC Asian American Center on Cameron Avenue. Heidi, the AAC’s director, says the center is the first of its kind in the Southeast and is poised to become a leading authority for Asian American studies. The AAC was founded in 2020 but the pandemic forced a virtual opening. Current students and alumni attended the event, including Eugene Lao, class of 1991, who was a founding donor for the AAC and a founding member of the Asian Students Association, now known as the Asian American Students Association. The chancellor, who has a 14-year-old Asian American daughter, says he is proud to have the AAC open its doors, particularly to the Asian American students who make up 17% of UNC’s student body.
