ACTIVITIES

Zen wins EARCOS Global Citizenship Award By Jon Nordmeyer, ESOL teacher, Pudong campus At the Pudong high school end-of-year awards assembly, SAS grade 11 student Edwin Zen was presented with the EARCOS Global Citizen award. Current president of the Roots and Shoots club and an active member of Animal Rescue club, Zen embodies the qualities of a global citizen as defined by EARCOS: a proud representative of his/her nation while respectful of the diversity of other nations, has an open mind, is well informed, aware and empathetic, concerned and caring for others, encouraging a sense of community, and strongly committed to engagement and action to make the world a better place. Finally, this student is able to interact and communicate effectively with people from all walks of life while having a sense of collective responsibility for all who inhabit the globe. This seems to have been written for Edwin Zen. Many SAS students are dedicated leaders, committed to serving the larger community; however, even in such company,

Edwin stands out as a particularly compassionate, energetic, and selfless individual. In addition to motivating and organizing more than 70 students in Roots and Shoots all year, he coordinated Relay for Life and created Battle of the Books, a unique event combining literacy, competition, and medieval knights. He was active in NHS, served as a peer tutor and wrote “the Zen of Being Green” an environmental column for WORD magazine. He was often mistaken for a teacher because of his professional and efficient communication with community organizations. A courageous dreamer, Edwin’s passion is infectious as he flashes his signature “Garfield” grin. Edwin Zen will move to Japan next year to attend ASIJ in Tokyo. He will be missed by many students and teachers. He has left SAS a better place and inspired other student leaders to follow in his footsteps.

Laptop News By Jon Nordmeyer, Teacher, Pudong campus As the school year draws near, the school would like to give students and parents a few reminders and recommendations about laptop computers. Summer Holiday Purchases Please remember that only laptops purchased through the school may be used at Shanghai American School. If you purchase a computer elsewhere, you will not be able to use it at SAS. The computers are on a three year cycle and when the cycle ends, students and parents will be able to purchase another school computer or request a forth year with the same school computer. If you are interested in a holiday gift, purchasing an external

hard drive is an excellent choice as you will be able to backup all of your work and applications if an accident does occur. Caring for your Laptop over the Holidays We have tracked repairs over the summer holidays for the past several years and have found that the holiday time is when most damage occurs to student computers because routines are broken. Before going anywhere for the holidays please use Time Machine to back up the computers. Time Machine directions can be found on the middle school and high school principal blogs on both campuses.
