An open call to artists was sent out in late April, 2012 announcing the first annual Arts Country Juried Arts Competition. The competition was open to artists living within the South Central Ontario Region (SCOR), as well as the cities of London, St. Thomas, and Brantford. The SCOR includes Brant, Norfolk, Oxford, Elgin, and Middlesex County. The competition is a fundraiser to support the online and print versions of Arts Country, a unique cooperative regional approach to marketing locally created art, studio tours, and unique cultural and heritage experiences. There is no other project quite like it in Canada. To enter the competition, artists were required to submit three photographs of their work with descriptions, along with a $50 entrance fee to the Norfolk Arts, Culture, and Heritage Alliance, the not-for-profit, volunteer-driven organization overseeing the Arts Country project. Approximately 180 pieces were entered from across the region for consideration by the jury. The images were catalogued and randomly posted online with all the details provided by the artists except their names and locations. This way, jurors were able to judge the merits of each individual piece, rather than considering the artist's work as a collection or regional representation. In order to be accepted into the show, a work of art was required to get at least one 'yes' vote from a juror. After the initial online review was

completed, 16 pieces had received three yes votes, 29 had received two, and 72 – including the eventual winner – received one, for a total of 117 accepted pieces.

The jurors met at the Norfolk Arts Centre on June 18, 2012 to view the accepted pieces in person and award prizes. Again, the works of art stood on their own, without any information about the artist. The process took approximately two hours, and careful consideration was given to each piece as it was reviewed and considered for a prize. By the end of deliberations, three unanimous winners were selected. Encaustic painter Sierra Barber of Simcoe was named the first winner of the Arts Country Juried Arts Competition; glass artist Miia Virtasalmi, also of Simcoe came in second; and painter Laurie-Lynn McGlynn of London came third.

Patricia Deadman is a visual ar tist, independent curator, and writer. She studied Fine Arts at Fanshawe College in London, ON, and obtained her BFA from the University of Windsor. Deadman has participated in numerous artist residencies in Banff, Paris, and Mexico. Her lens-based work has been exhibited since the 1980s and collected in public and private collections throughout Canada, USA, and Mexico. Deadman is the former curator of the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, SK) and currently Acting Curator for the Woodstock Art Gallery.

The 2012 Ar ts Country Juried Ar ts Competition jurors are Laura Woermke, Executive Director and Curator of the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre; Patricia Deadman, Acting Curator of the Woodstock Art Gallery; and Robert Achtemichuk, former director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo. All three judges have strong backgrounds in a range of artistic disciplines. Laura Woermke was born in London, and has been a visual art professional for 20 years. A graduate of the University of Windsor's School of Fine Art in 1990 with a Honours BFA in Visual Arts, she has worked steadily as an artist and the Executive Director and Curator

Ro b e r t A c h t e m i c h u k r e c e i v e d h i s undergraduate degree from the University of Manitoba with a focus on printmaking, and he has also studied in France, Mexico, and Toronto. His work appears in public galleries and private collections across Canada and abroad, including Brussels, Paris, and, Mexico City. He has often been a guest artist or an artist in residence, including the Banff School of the Fine Arts and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Until recently, he was the Director of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, ON, and recently exhibited Latitude 43.456193 Longitude 80.500507 at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant.

“I want to create happiness” Glass sculptor Miia Virtasalmi's artwork is inspired by happy childhood memories. The Simcoe artist says that her love of bold colours and round shapes is what leads her to create her clever, whimsical, and engaging works of art. Her prize-winning sculpture Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows, was created with blown, fused, and sand-cast glass, and inspired by her love of fairy tales. “I want to create happiness,” she said.

Virtasalmi is well-known throughout Norfolk County for her blown glass tea party sculptures, which she says bring a domestic, cheery gathering together into a single tower. “I include the entire party,” Virtasalmi explains. “It's not only the table setting, but also the guest characters, whose faces are painted on the teapot sides.” Originally from Finland, Virtasalmi has exhibited across Europe and Canada, and in Japan, Turkey, and the United States. Norfolk County’s creative minds inhabit every corner of our great community. From engineers to artists, web developers to musicians, Norfolk County is blessed with many uniquely talented people. Many of our artists’ studios are open year round. Check out ceramic artists and potters such as Anne Armstrong, Marguerite Larmand, Joanne Munzar, Joseph Panacci, Melissa Schooley, Lesley Starnes. Norfolk County is home to excellent glass artists, like Merianne Fess, Carolyn Muir and Miia Virtasalmi. Sculptors such as Robert Tannahill and Garry Walker are well known. Those who work in wood, like Ron Bezzo, Trevor Darbishire, Bruce “House” Milner and Harley Snively, and Florence Watkinson who works with fabric, are highly respected. Michael Keller is a book binder and restorer. His pieces are assembled and turned on the lathe, from wood obtained from all parts of the world to give a distinct look for each finished item. Segmented turnings are not approached by many artists, as it is very time consuming and labour intensive. Through this method he creates bowls, vases, wood stem wine goblets and pens. A palete knife allows me to manipulate the thick layers of oil paint, affording a lush texture to my paintings as I boldly blob the paints on canvas and board. There is movement and energy in the trails left from the sweep of the knife. When travelling and away I make colourful sketches with acrylics as the beginnings of my new works. Jim has been carving and sculpting off and on for over thirty years. Jim says that other obligations and projects have sometimes got in the way in his life, but he has always come back to the studio. It is important to listen to that little voice inside us. Highschool at BCI was the beginning of his interest in sculpture and that interest has continued for most of his adult life as a serious hobby and obsession. Jim is self taught but has taken instructional courses form Master Carvers, Neil Cox and Fred Zavadil. Other carvers and sculptors, too numerous to mention, have provided a wealth of guidance and information. Jim has entered his carvings in competitions at wood shows in Ontario. He has won best of show in London and most recently won second and third prize at the Hamilton Wood Show. Jim is now ready to share his passion with the community and hopes to display his carvings publicly.

Opened in 1948 by Jimmie Clennell and Selma Caverly, it has produced quality earthenware and stoneware functional pottery for 64 years. Second generation studio potter Brenda (Caverly) Smith offers a wide range of functional pieces including complete dinner sets. High fired reduction ware is wheel thrown with some slab work. sandra_england@rogers.com From a very early age Sandra has been sketching portraits, animals, and cartoons. She has always explored her creative nature through crafts, art, and music. Her work is diverse using Watercolour, Acrylic, and Mixed Media, with subject matter that varies from representational landscape; floral art; figurative work, and often more abstract mixed media. Her most recent adventure in art has taken her into abstract figurative impressionistic art. All of her work is signed Sam, a nickname from childhood, which has followed her throughout her life. After winning a citywide United Appeal poster contest Robert realized that his work was good enough to sell! Encouraged by many friends, teachers, and his wife Yvonne, Robert has continued painting for many years. Robert concentrated on working in Oils in the 1950’s, Acrylics in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Pen and Ink, Charcoal and Mixed Media in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In 2000 Robert became a member of Art Circle in London and started painting in Watercolour, which is now his favourite medium. june-anne_reid@sympatico.ca June-Anne enjoys painting realistic images and landscapes, may they be real or imaginary, but her real love lies in abstracts. Taking her brushes to canvas her thoughts and feelings are transformed to become much more than shapes and images. She often begins with a scene or a colour scheme in mind, mostly from a memory or feeling that has touched her. As the work progresses, the painting emerges. It is from these beginnings that she enhances her finished product. During this creative process she often steps back, putting the painting at the \’end of the hall\’, so to speak, and from a distance seeks out the possibilities of what that art could become. This inspires June-Anne to enhance the painting with ideas that emerge from within, or what feels right. She frequently names her paintings to encourage the viewer to look deeper and become more involved with her work. June-Anne, one of the five partners who opened the Art Emporium in Port Stanley this year, proudly displays her work along with the other 31 Boathouse Members in the Art Emporium Boathouse Gallery.
