Literacy Intervention - Reading Recovery • An individualized literacy intervention program for students who struggle with reading and writing in Grade 1. • One-to-one 30 minutes/day lesson model supplements regular classroom teaching • Aims to bring students to average achievement in reading and writing in 12 to 20 weeks. JOB EMBEDDED READING RECOVERY - INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING During this year-long Reading Recovery training, teachers are trained to assess and identify students in the lowest achievement range and provide these students with individually designed and delivered lessons. Teachers will: • expand their background in literacy theory • learn observational assessment techniques • match books to students’ level of instruction • analyze text difficulty • determine the most effective next step in reading and writing procedures for an individual child • discuss methods of making powerful teaching decisions • learn practical reading and writing procedures including: problem-solving using multiple sources of information; methods of hearing and recording sounds in words; learning how words work using phonemic awareness and word patterns • understand the relationship between reading and writing.

Based on an apprenticeship model where teachers learn the procedures and theory while working directly with students. Each trainee takes a turn teaching behind a one-way glass giving the other teachers an opportunity to discuss good reading and writing processing. They are supported by a teacher leader who: • conducts the training sessions • visits schools to observe the trainee’s teaching • discusses their most challenging children • offers assistance in methods and procedures. Note: Lessons are individual and are taught for half an hour daily. The Reading Recovery Module includes 22 inservices and 5 school visits. First session:
