Children as storytellers For younger children, stories told or heard can help them understand the world in which they live and allow them to transmit that understanding to others. Talk is a rehearsal for writing, and first-hand situations experienced through drama and role play approaches provide young children with the ideas and language they need for writing. We use Shakespeare’s stories to develop Key Stage 1 pupils’ responses to, and understanding of, stories and their ability to share that knowledge through the spoken and written word. Through active participation, play and performance, pupils are encouraged to think about how stories are structured, how characters behave and the moral dilemmas that confront them. Additionally, it provides teachers with the skills and confidence to lead practical approaches to literacy.
