SPIRIT AWARD: At a Wednesday luncheon in December, Charl Hadfield was presented with the Spirit Award that she was unable to receive in October. This award is given to a Salty Sister who exemplifies the following qualities: contribution to the social aspect of sailing, good sportsmanship, leadership, organization, motivation, involvement, and attendance at Wednesday morning Salty Sister sailing activities. RACING NEWS: In November and December, on the average, there were 34 sailors and 15 RC volunteers on shore or on the water in Tampa Bay and the South Yacht Basin every Wednesday that we had a sailing activity. Sigrid Lovfald and Rosemary Sherman represented the Salties in the Commodore Lucas Cup at Pass-a-Grille. FWSA INTERCLUB NEWS: Our sailors have represented us well at the past Interclubs. Hosted by the Dinghy Dames at Davis Island, Carol Hansen, Nancy Strite, and Dee Gill sailed in the December FWSA Interclub. The Salty Sisters hosted an Interclub at SPSC in December. Our Salty sailors sailing in this event were Prams: Nancy Kadau (2nd Pl) and Dee Gill. Sunfish sailors were: Sue Davidson (1st Pl) and Lisa Avila. SOCIAL: For Thanksgiving, several people dressed in historic attire. L-R Barbara Deininger, Gretchen Tenbrock-Wolfe, Shirley Rigo, Betty Scrim, Shelia Moore, and Gail Falkingham helped create a great Thanksgiving atmosphere. CHRISTMAS BOUTIQUE: Carol Hansen announced that the 16th Annual SPYC Christmas Boutique sponsored by the Salty Sisters was held on Tuesday, December 1st. After 15 years of hard work and organizing the Boutique, Char-Nel Doyle relinquished her duties to the Salty Sisters Boutique Committee. Joanne Simmons headed up the Committee this year with Joy Rudnicki, Lisa Avila, Mary Jane Peabody, Susan Huff, and Carol Hansen work. Several Salties volunteered for this event. Char-Nel graciously offered her guidance as an advisor to the group. The Boutique was a tremendous success almost doubling the sponsorships and with a full house of 46 vendors. All funds raised will go to Junior Sailing and Junior sailing activities. Last year the Boutique was able to send 14 YMCA children to the Learn to Sail summer program held at the Sailing Center. Funds were also used to purchase six new sailboards for the kids. Thanks to the club staff and all the Salty Sistersand Women’s Club volunteers who helped make this a very successful event. CANDY CANE REGATTA: On December 2nd, over 20 sailors sailed Prams and numerous volunteers oversaw the craziness of this regatta. Helen Larsen was awarded a charm for her many successful years of chairing this event. Winners of the Christmas Hat competition were Els Wiemken and Sue Davidson. Judge Cody Spruce had a difficult decision to make with all those great hats! Winners of the three Candy Cane Regatta races were as follows: The Christmas Tree Race: 1st Carol Hansen, 2nd Els Wiemken, 3rd Nancy Kadau and Last - Camilla Kilgroe. The Candy Cane Grab: The most candy canes grabbed award went to 1st Joy Rudnicki, 2nd Anne O’Dell, and 3rd Sue Davidson. The last race was the Poker Run and holiday prizes were awarded to all participants.
