Culture The country’s proud history and rich heritage can be traced back to the early settlers who arrived from various parts of the world. Although Maldives boasts of a wide plethora of cultures, the most dominant traits are attributable to the country’s close proximity to Sri Lanka and South India. An important aspect of the Maldivian culture is that the people are open to adaptation and are welcoming of inspiration from overseas.
Language Dhivehi, of Indo-Iranian Sanskritic origin, is the language spoken all over Maldives. However, most Maldivians are conversant in English and travellers can easily communicate and get around the mainland.
Economy The economy of Maldives largely consists of tourism, fishing and industry. Tourism accounts for 28% of the national GDP and more than 60% of the country’s foreign exchange receipts. Fishing is thesecond largest sector. Industry in the Maldives includes garment production, handicrafts and even boatbuilding, accounting for approximately 18% of the GDP.
