Barbara Tinson elected Chamber chair

When Barbara Tinson was elected as chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s Annual General Meeting on April 4, it wasn’t an entirely new experience for her. Tinson, business centre manager at Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) since 2010, last held the volunteer chair role from 2006-2008. But she doesn’t think this term will be a replication of her last experience. “We have a very different Chamber than we did before,” Tinson explains. “Even the staff is very different. Before, a few of us on the board were drafting our press releases and developing policy. I think the number and sophistication of the staff is noticeably better.” On the evening of the Annual General Meeting, Tinson spoke to the membership about leading with policy. A self-described ‘policy wonk’, prior to assuming the position of chair, Tinson cochaired the Policy & Advocacy Committee. “To me, policy really is the driving force of the Chamber,” she says. “There are a lot of issues that are in front of us right now and when we look at what’s going on in Richmond, there are some big concerns looming that I think are going to preoccupy the business community, and therefore our policies. Transportation and

housing are certainly going to be in front of us and I think our leadership needs to focus on the most effective tactics to benefit our community. We can create real value through policy. Politicians know that the Chamber is apolitical, so they’re always interested in hearing what our members have to say because they know we don’t have a political agenda.” At BDC, Barbara focuses on the success of entrepreneurs and works as a champion of women in business. She sees this expertise influencing her leadership at the Chamber. “One of my goals for this year is to start a Women’s Leadership Circle. I would very much like to strike a committee on Women in Leadership within the Chamber, write a mandate, and develop a whole level of activities that address women in entrepreneurship and their specific needs. Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, Surrey Board of Trade – they all have very successful programming that addresses the needs of women in business. It’s our turn for sure. We’ve already started some of that work with the Women in Leadership Luncheon and now it’s time to expand. I think we can engage our membership in a whole different way if we put some focus on women.” Tinson’s other legacy priority is to move the Chamber into a permanent location. “If we have our

own space, there’s the obvious benefit of not having to constantly worry about where we may have to move. The other benefit is that it builds us visibility and some equity, so that we have an actual financial asset. It is prudent for us to have some control over our own space, because as we know, the cost of real estate is becoming more expensive. It also gives us an opportunity to partner with a like-minded organization to colocate, which would create some synergies as well as potential cost

savings.” With a focus on the big picture, and providing value to Chamber members, Barbara Tinson is poised to champion the Richmond Chamber of Commerce through a very exciting year. As the organization embarks on a new Strategic Plan, a modernized membership-structure, and continually evolving events program, Tinson’s experienced leadership is positioned to shepherd the city’s largest business organization into a new era.
