!!!! !!! 2021–2022

From

Mission Our

Shady Hill School fosters joyful, active learning informed by multiple perspectives—empowering students to be intellectually adventurous and wholeheartedly just.

WE BELIEVE

The May Day dancing captured on the cover of this report exemplifies Shady Hill’s joyful return to in-person gatherings, after the social distancing and creative pivots that were the hallmark of the prior school year. In 2021-2022, we rediscovered the profound joys of togetherness as we slowly, over the course of the year, reinstated most of our school traditions.

We declared early on a theme for the year: Rebuilding Relationships and Reconnecting as a Community. The photo spread on pages 3-4 depicts some of the many newly-cherished in-person moments over the course of the year. We will never again take togetherness for granted!

Another vital ingredient we must never take for granted is the financial support of our donors. All who contributed in Fiscal Year 2022 were investing in Shady Hill’s mission and providing the means to carry it out. Each and every donor listed in this report – and those who choose to remain anonymous, as well – has our wholehearted thanks.

Pooling our dollars in support of this School that we love is another measure of togetherness. Regardless of the scale of one’s gift, the act of giving in and of itself unites us. And that is a beautiful thing.

Sincerely,

• Play and discovery are central to every child’s growth and true exploration takes time.

• The purpose of knowledge is to create meaning, develop understanding, and inspire action.

• Growing up is a nuanced process and mistakes are catalysts for deeper learning and progress.

• A strong, interdependent community is the framework for academic confidence and social and emotional health.

• Practicing genuine kindness towards oneself and others helps build a compassionate world.

• We have a responsibility—as individuals and as a community—to honor difference, challenge prejudice, and strive for racial and social justice.

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends of the school who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2021–22 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are enriching our school’s programming, student experience, fundraising efforts, and faculty & staff. Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School!

Shady Hill is truly a place to belong. The respect for diversity and inclusion is one of my favorite things about SHS. The social experience is equally as important as the academics in many ways - teaching smart people to be good people. We are blessed.”

Rebuilding Relationships and Reconnecting as a Community

This past year was a marked improvement over the prior “full Pandemic” year that will forever be remembered for social distancing, class cohorts strictly keeping to themselves, and a closed campus. Happily, 2021–22 saw improvement to all those restrictions: Students socialized freely at recess, team sports returned, and we reopened campus to parents in October. From then on, we picked up steam, finding ways to host more and more heart-warming gatherings over the course of the year. In the process, we all learned an important lesson: We will never again take in-person gathering for granted!

May Day Magic

On Wednesday, May 11 we had our first all-school, in-person May Day since 2019. The weather granted us a beautiful, sunny, blue-skies day for the whole community to gather together. Students performed dances with their classmates and the crowds erupted with cheers. Faculty delighted audiences with a surprise dance to the song Jerusalema.

Parent Socials

Outdoor gatherings in the dead of winter, in Boston – why not?! With indoor masking still in place, we turned to two outdoor breweries, Nightshift Brewing in Everett (owned by a current Shady Hill family) and Notch Brewery in Allston, for a total of seven parent socials between December and March. Heat lamps and hardy constitutions made these a hit!

Shady Hill sustained our family through these past few years. In 2021–22 we so appreciated the chances to get back together – and to give back to help sustain the school we love.

Reunion Resumed

We were thrilled to host Reunion in person once again, on the afternoon/ evening of June 3, on campus. Program highlights included watching the Grade IV Greek Olympics, various panel discussions, and student-led tours. The evening culminated with an impromptu singing of old Shady Hill songs, led by the Class of 1962.

Families Welcome!

Our youngest students were not yet eligible for vaccines until June. Still, we opened up for indoor attendance by families at various culminating events, such as the Grade II Charles River Museum (shown above left), numerous class plays, the Grade VIII production of Mary Poppins, jazz band’s spring concert, etc.

Black Alumni Gathering

Black alumni gathered on June 25th for an alumni affinity event planned by a stellar committee of alumni working closely with the Shady Hill Alumni Office. Attendees spanned the decades, from Richard Evans ’51, our first Black graduate, up through Sophia George ’21. One highlight of the day: a vibrant discussion about what alumni appreciated during their time as SHS students, and what they’d like to see going forward.

Our daughter joined Shady Hill in fourth grade in 2021. Despite our not being able to enter the campus due to COVID, we felt warmly welcomed by Shady Hill families who reached out to answer questions and plan playdates in the weeks before school started and once the school year began. As restrictions were eased, we took part in traditions like the Fair, the Grade IV Olympics and May Day, and fully experienced the special school and community that Shady Hill is.

Sports Spectating

Something as simple as re-opening our sports competitions to spectators was cause for great appreciation last fall! Families flocked to campus to cheer on their young athletes!

The Shady Hill Fund

Annual giving is the foundation of a successful fundraising program and one indicator of our community’s love for Shady Hill. We are proud that once again, with loyal giving and a committed community, the Fund raised $2.3M thanks to stretch giving, broad participation and support from all corners. Giving exceeded the budgetary goal of $1.9M which was needed to offer the School’s outstanding program.

For the first time in three years, for May Day of Giving we reconvened in person with a tradition that means so much to us all and allowed students, parents, faculty and grandparents to see joyful, active learning take center stage. Reconnecting together as a school wide community was particularly meaningful and we celebrated with support from all constituencies, unlocking more than $100,000 in challenge dollars.

The complete donor listing that follows recognizes individuals who supported the School at all levels. Parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, TTC graduates and employees all contributed. We are grateful to share the roll call below and appreciate the support that makes every awe-inspired day at Shady Hill meaningful.

We are always proud of the amazing work of Shady Hill alumni. Our spotlight series highlights the work of alumni who are using their talents to make a difference. On the pages that follow, we reprint some of these “change makers” posts. You can read them all at www.shs.org/changemakers.

As a Senior Attorney at the Equal Justice Initiative (made famous in the 2019 film Just Mercy), Sia Sanneh ’94 works to overturn wrongful convictions, freeing innocent people from death row. Her current focus includes teenaged prisoners — as young as 13 or 14 years old — who have been tried as adults and sentenced to die in prison. In a further layer of appalling injustice, many of these young clients have been abused while in the adult prison system.

Another aspect of Sia’s work with Bryan Stevenson, Executive Director of EJI, has been to create two new cultural sites in Montgomery, Alabama: the Legacy Museum, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. It aims to teach the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, with the larger goal of challenging inequality in America. The National Memorial, a mile away, seeks to honor the legacy of enslaved Black people, people terrorized by lynching, those humiliated by racial segregation and Jim Crow, and people of color burdened with contemporary presumptions of guilt and police violence.

Naseem Makiya ’99 is the founder of Outvote, an app that makes campaigning and organizing more personal by enabling people to message friends and family

with reminders to register, vote, sign a petition, donate to a campaign, etc. Outvote’s aim is to promote voter participation within progressive campaigns, and its larger mission is to build a community of organizers that remain active even between election cycles.

Our work is based on the premise that contacting your own personal network of friends and family – what’s known as ’relational organizing’ – is far more effective than cold-calling strangers. What we did was build the digital tools to make it easy for busy people to do a lot more relational organizing, a lot more quickly.”

Dr. Patience White ’62 is a practicing pediatric and adult rheumatologist and professor emeritus of medicine and pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Patience is also co-director of “Got Transition,” a national resource center that works to improve the process of transitioning young adults from pediatric to adult health care. “There are an estimated 35 million young adults aged 18–25 in the US, approximately 28% of whom have chronic conditions. Many of them, along with their counterparts without chronic conditions, will need to move from a pediatric to an adult health care clinician.

Patience was drawn to the growing issue of pediatric-to-adult health care transition after observing that this move into the adult health care system was particularly tough on her young patients with special care needs and disabilities. Got Transition actively works to assist health care systems improve their health care transition practice processes and to equip youth, young adults and families with the resources they need.

Letty Belin Joshua Kay David Riggs TTC ’76 Polly Spiegel Richard Wulsin David Smith ’59, 11-year Shady Hill student and then a longtime Shady Hill teacher, and now an educational consultant and author, is nationally recognized for his award-winning curriculum “Mapping the World by Heart.” During his time as a middle school gradehead at Shady Hill from 1970-1992, David realized his students had little knowledge of where the different New England states were located and even less about global geography, so he began having his students draw the cities and counties of Massachusetts entirely from memory. From there, he expanded to having students draw countries all over the world. These memory maps attained legendary status among students and alumni, many of whom proudly display their maps to this day.

After retiring from Shady Hill, David began traveling as an educational consultant, sharing his geography and global issues curricula with educators in various countries. His travels inspired the idea of creating a realistic picture of the diversity that exists in the world, in a way that would be easy for young people to understand. The result was a book, If the World Were a Village: A Book about the World’s People, published in 2002 and over 1 million copies were sold.

As the CEO of New York-based America Needs You, known by its acronym ANY, Marianna Tu ’01 helps provide ambitious first-generation college students from low-income households with support as they navigate college and career opportunities. Mentoring is the foundation of ANY: each college student, or “Fellow,” as ANY calls them, is paired with a mentor, and both are supported by workshops, coaching and resources. “Navigating college and launching a career as a first-generation student can be so complex, so having that one go-to person can be incredibly impactful.” Mentors and Fellows meet weekly, and attend Saturday workshops as a pair (with “meet” and “attend” having taken a virtual turn this past year).

Marianna’s journey at ANY began as a volunteer in 2011; one year later, she joined ANY’s staff, rising to CEO after serving as Chief Program Officer and Chief Operating Officer. Marianna has launched ANY chapters in New Jersey, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

David Meshoulam ’92 is Co-founder and Executive Director of Speak For the Trees (SFTT), a nonprofit in Boston that seeks to increase the size and health of Boston’s urban canopy as trees provide various environmental and health benefits. In many urban areas, tree canopy is unequally distributed leading to inequitable access to the benefits of trees. Speak For The Trees’ focus is on undercanopied neighborhoods, such as East Boston, that have less than 10% canopy coverage. David’s team is working to protect existing trees and empowering residents to plant new trees in their own communities. Since 2019, SFFT has given away over 2,000 free trees.

Before starting SFTT, David helped create a small pilot program for youth in his home community of Watertown. Watertown’s Teens for Trees, a 6-week summer program, taught teens about Watertown’s urban forest. Speak For the Trees also has a youth component, the Teen Urban Tree Corps program, through which youth from the Boston area collect data on street trees and empty planting sites, learn about the importance of their community forests, and advocate for their local trees as an environmental justice issue.

Tom Plaut ’52, has been bridging cultural barriers to rural healthcare delivery since the 1980s. Working with the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC), Tom and his colleagues conducted 40 focus groups with residents, teachers, social and medical services providers. The team found that many locals did not trust the clinic doctors, who came from outside the area, with lifestyles off-putting to the locals. Simple access to care also was a barrier. A 1990 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation enabled bringing teams of dentists into middle schools, and the creation of a county-wide community health planning organization that still exists today.

After retiring from teaching, Tom was invited to work with Consider Haiti, a non-profit organization in Asheville, NC which sends to Montrouis, Haiti and surrounding mountain villages twice each year.

Sommer Thomas ’03 works at the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston, using her organizational agility and behavioral management expertise to help build better teams through trust. “Team building is more important than ever given the increase in working from home, the decline in civil discourse in society at large, and ongoing tensions exacerbated by 2020’s racial reckoning.”

Sommer focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion. These last two years she has chaired an employee resource group whose goal is to support black employee development and educate others about racism and the black experience. Some of these educational events include bringing in some star speakers of the black community. The president of Boston’s NAACP chapter, Tanisha Sullivan, addressed police violence and education and David A. Thomas, 12th President of Morehouse College – who happens to be Sommer’s dad, as well as a former Shady Hill Trustee – spoke on the importance of corporate management of inclusion.

As challenging as it can be to build trust and effect cultural change in huge, established organizations, Sommer is undaunted. She sees “a thirst for education” at the Bank and is thrilled to provide it.

Natalie Kim ’10 works at the intersection of critical social/environmental issues and private capital investments. This junction referred to as “impact investing,” seeks to harness private capital to achieve benefits for society and for the planet. Clean energy, financial inclusion, environmental markets, and sustainable infrastructure are some areas Natalie’s projects at Encourage Capital address. For instance, Natalie is eagerly working on an India Solar Energy Fund which will enable small and medium-sized businesses in India to install solar rooftops, switching over to renewable energy. Natalie has also helped launch the “Sustainable Solutions Collaborative,” an international competition through which organizations and entrepreneurs compete for $250,000 grants to enable them to scale up promising innovations.

Previously, Natalie was living in the San Francisco Bay Area for a few years working as a corporate strategy consultant. The numerous wildfires burning across California prompted her to want to shift gears, “to do something more hands-on and impactful.” She is happy to have found her way to impact investing, and says she is “inspired by the people she works with every day.”

Nicholas McQuaid ’88 is the United States Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division. This

means he supervises more than 600 federal attorneys who conduct investigations and prosecutions combating organized crime, gang violence, securities fraud, health care fraud, cybercrime, money laundering, and other crimes.

One worrisome trend Nick has been tasked with addressing is the increasing threats to election workers and election officials. “Making sure folks are able to exercise their right to vote in a way that is safe and fair is vital,” Nick emphasizes.

Nick brings an athlete’s determination to his work. At Wesleyan, he distinguished himself as a rower and then spent six years post-college in pursuit of a spot on the Men’s US Olympic Rowing Team. When he didn’t make the team in 2000, he decided to change track and head to law school. In 2013 he moved to Washington and joined the White House Counsel’s Office, where he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Counsel and Deputy Assistant to President Obama. “Working at the White House is a unique and inspiring privilege. I don’t think you ever stop recognizing how special it is to come to work at this place.”

Skilled storyteller Peter Bull ’69 is an independent filmmaker and an Emmy award-winning producer of documentaries, whose goal is “to break down very complicated issues into digestible nuggets so that people can better understand our world – and put that understanding into action.”

His gripping documentary Dirty Business: ‘Clean Coal’ and the Battle for Our Energy Future, came out in 2010, debunking the myth of “clean coal” and illustrating potential climate change solutions. Peter shares, “Climate change is the crucial issue of our time and the scientific evidence is daunting.” Currently, Peter is collaborating with The Innocence Project on a documentary about the 1970’s MacDonald family murders, to aid in the effort to release Jeffrey MacDonald from prison.

With his work, Peter hopes, “to shed light on what is going on in order to make change, to get people wrongly accused released from prison and to help us solve problems like climate change.”

Anneke Reich ’05 works to educate young people about the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, with the goal of reducing relationship abuse — a calling made even more urgent given the recent rollback of abortion rights.

While working as a theater educator and arts integration specialist in the Boston Public School system for seven years, Anneke observed that the topic of healthy relationships was not always covered in students’ health education classes. She then started a job at One Love Foundation, a nonprofit whose goal is to empower young people with the knowledge to identify and avoid abusive relationships.

Anneke’s current role focuses on developing and facilitating interactive workshops within schools and nonprofit organizations across New England. She also trains community members and teachers so that they can effectively lead One Love workshops, and she works directly with One Love’s “Student Ambassadors,” equipping teens to facilitate programs within their schools. Since its founding, more than 37,000 volunteers have been trained to facilitate in-person workshops, which have reached over 1.9 million participants.

Being a member of the Shady Hill community has been such a gift to our family. We moved here from Brazil in the fall of 2020 and felt warmly welcomed by students, parents and faculty alike. The school culture is one where we wanted to be immediately involved; I dove into volunteering for the Fair. In this role, I have been able to meet faculty and parents across grade levels and work closely with fellow parents, creating strong bonds.

We give to the school because of its emphasis on students’ emotional well-being, because it’s a community that meets children where they are, and because it celebrates belonging and diversity.”

The Year of the New Mission Statement

The 2021-2022 school year will be remembered, among other things, for the adoption of Shady Hill’s new Mission Statement. As part of our Association of Independent Schools of New England (AISNE) reaccreditation in 2018-19, we committed to a deep review of the mission statement, which had last been updated in 2009. Following best practice, we convened a task force of teachers, administrators, Board members, alumni, parents, and PALS (parents of alumni), who dove in deep, grappling for many months over the best wording to convey our values and goals in a more concise way. The Committee shared drafts with the full faculty and staff who provided feedback along the way.

In the end, we achieved wording that we believe does a better job at capturing our essence, including our longstanding commitment to equity and social justice:

In refreshing the mission statement, we did not turn the School in a new direction; not in the least! Rather, we reexamined and recommitted to our essence, and endeavored to capture it better, in clearer wording.

We are proud of the new statement, and expect it will serve us well for the next decade, perhaps longer. It is our very own North Star, the compass guiding all our decisions.

We owe the Mission Statement Committee our deepest gratitude.

The process of putting words to the mission was such a rewarding experience. “Intellectually adventurous” and “wholeheartedly just” feel just right — both reflective and aspirational of who we are and who we seek to be. With the clarity of values — joy and discovery, perspective and knowledge, interdependence and confidence, kindness and responsibility — we can turn to the mission to inform our decisions about our pedagogy, practice, and program. ”

Faculty Funds

A strong endowment means a strong future, and at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts – and sometimes whole new funds – added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. We are grateful to the donors behind each and every one.

Dick Coveney ’48, 1933-2021

It’s no exaggeration to say that a teacher can provide crucial stability in a child’s rocky life. Such was the case for Dick Coveney ’48, who arrived at Shady Hill in 1945 at the age of 12. His parents had split up, leaving Dick, his mother, and his little brother without a home; they stayed with a progression of friends. Thanks to a scholarship, Dick landed at Shady Hill for seventh grade, and here he encountered teacher Bart Chapin, thus beginning “the best phase of my life” as he often said. He credited Mr. Chapin with teaching him to write and pushing him to excel. Bart Chapin and his wife Jane, also a Shady Hill teacher, even agreed when Dick pleaded to stay with them one summer while Dick’s mother was moving once again. The young student took it hard when his beloved teacher was recruited to a school in Buffalo, New York; Dick led a “student strike” until Mr. Chapin convinced Dick that it had to end.

Years later, when the class of 1948 was celebrating its 50th Reunion, Dick and his classmates decided to create a financial aid fund to pay tribute to Mr. Chapin, who had recently passed away. In the decades since its inception, the Bart Chapin Fund grew to over $100,000, generating important financial aid monies every year. But Dick did not rest there; he put a clause in his will steering a generous sum to the Bart Chapin Fund. Dick passed away in April 2021 and his bequest reached Shady Hill this year, doubling the Chapin Fund’s size and impact.

From scholarship recipient to scholarship donor, Dick’s story of “paying it forward” is an inspiring one – yet if Dick were still with us, he would say it was his beloved teacher Bart Chapin who inspired it all.

The Willow Tree Society

The Willow Tree Society recognizes individuals who have provided for Shady Hill School’s future through a bequest, trust, gift annuity, retirement plan, or other similar vehicle.

The Society takes its name from the beautiful willow trees that have been beloved features of Shady Hill’s landscape over the decades. The tree shown in this photo had to come down this year, having reached the end of its lifespan -- an unintended metaphor for gifts “harvested” decades after they are seeded.

We welcome new Willow Tree Society members at any time; more information is available at www.shs.org/plannedgiving. We are deeply grateful to all listed below, who are already members.

School Plays, and a Lifelong Passion for Theater

Lindsey Furnald Cadot ’61 arrived at Shady Hill in middle school and made friends quickly thanks to her “sunny, plucky personality,” according to her classmate and friend Tink Beal Davis. “Lindsey was always upbeat and game for anything; she’d jump right in no matter what the activity was.”

When Lindsey passed away last winter, her brother let Shady Hill know Lindsey had designated a portion of her retirement fund to the School. He speculated that the school plays his sister had loved so much might have been at the root of her lifelong love of theater, and he was very happy to hear that plays are still a core experience for our students, woven into the curriculum at all grades and capped by the Eighth Grade Musical. Lindsey’s bequest has been added to the endowment, where it will support all of Shady Hill’s programming, including the use of theater.

Shady Hill welcomes bequests of any size and through many mechanisms. Assigning a share of one’s IRA or 401(k) to Shady Hill, as Lindsey did, can be a particularly tax-wise approach, since it avoids the deferred income tax such accounts may otherwise owe. For more information, please visit www.shs. org/PlannedGiving or phone Betsy Ginsberg, Director of Development and Alumni Relations at 617-520-5225.

Highest Impact Donors of 2021–2022

Looking back on fiscal year 2022, we are grateful to each and every one of the 1,199 donors who collectively gave and pledged $3.35 million to Shady Hill School. We particularly recognize the following benefactors, whose gifts of all types, as well as new pledges, are aggregated in the roster below. These aggregated amounts comprise support of the Shady Hill Fund, pledge payments for the STEAM building and the Grade VI building, and for endowment.

Shady Hill would not be the school it is today without the strong philanthropic backing of those in a position to give so generously. On behalf of all who learn and grow at this fine school – now and in the future – we offer deep thanks.

“ At Shady Hill, we have a new mission statement, new belief statements, and new lessons from the pandemic. We’ve learned that in troubled times, it’s even more important for our students to be joyful active learners who embark on intellectual adventures. As we provide this engaging education – in good times and in challenging ones – we are grateful for the generous support of our community. Now, as we manage what remains of the pandemic and shift more of our focus on Shady Hill’s growth, I am excited about how our embrace of philanthropy can help our school flourish.”

Thank you!
