From the Head of School & Chair of the Board of Trustees

Our

Mission Shady Hill has always been a pioneer in the world of education. Our roots go back to the spring of 1915 when Agnes and Ernest Hockings’ local elementary school was being demolished, leaving them without a plan for their children for the following fall. Ernest and Agnes took the situation into their own hands, deciding to open a school on their back porch. Agnes, an experienced teacher, and Ernest, a Harvard professor, had strong beliefs about children and learning: 1. An innate hunger and high level of curiosity exists in every child. 2. “Information is not education,” that is, students learn to think by thinking. 3. Outdoor time is vital for children’s learning. 4. Primary source materials and texts are better than traditional textbooks.

Shady Hill School wants children to be joyful, active learners who develop the intellectual discipline necessary to become contributing, ethical citizens. To accomplish these ends, we believe in the primacy of exploration and discovery, we advance the mastery of skills, and we help students shape meaning from knowledge.

These foundational principles remain Shady Hill’s core, along with the corollaries of depth over breadth and honoring the pace of childhood. The Hockings’ approach has stood the test of time, becoming if anything more relevant, more compelling, more vital in today’s ever-more-complex and fast-paced world. Running a school in this way is no small task, and frankly, we could not do it without our deeply supportive community of parents, alumni, parents of alumni (“PALS”), grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends. This Report on Philanthropy attempts to recognize and thank all who have joined with us over Fiscal Year 2019, generously contributing both time and financial resources to further the Shady Hill mission. A wise former Head of School wrote in the book, Shady Hill’s Second Fifty Years, “Community is built on gratitude.” On behalf of the whole Shady Hill community, know that you have our most sincere gratitude. Sincerely, Mark J. Stanek Head of School

2018–2019 Leadership Volunteers

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, and friends of the school who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2018-19 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are boosting our school’s programming, student experience, fundraising efforts, and faculty and staff. Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School! Grade VI Building Project

Remodeling the old Science Building into the new home for Grade VI was one of Fiscal Year 2019’s most visible achievements. It is another example of Shady Hill School employing “adaptive reuse” for cost-efficiency and environmental responsibility. Students are so thrilled with their new environment, they created a “word cloud” (right) proclaiming the building’s virtues. We are grateful to these donors who made gifts to the Grade VI Building Project in FY19:

To Build. To Endow. To Preserve. Campaign Update The capital campaign that wrapped up in 2017 left a powerful mark on Shady Hill School in many ways. Perhaps the most visible of them is the repurposing of the old gymnasium into the extraordinary STEAM classrooms now known as “The Hub.” But the campaign had an equally powerful, if less easily visible, impact on Shady Hill in the form of a boost to our financial aid endowment. These pages focus on the impact of financial aid. The donor roster lists all who made pledge payments in FY19 to any component of the To Build. To Preserve. To Endow. Campaign. We are grateful for each and every gift.

“ I am writing to express my gratitude for the financial aid you awarded our family for next year. It is difficult to convey what this aid means to us, how much it means to us to know that Joy* can continue to grow and thrive at Shady Hill. Coming to this school has been, we believe, the single best thing we could have done for Joy and our family. She is blossoming here, surrounded by the brilliance and warmth of her teachers, the sweetness and kindness of her friends, the welcome and safety of the beautiful campus. Every day, she is challenged and inspired by the joyful and imaginative curriculum. She comes home and tells us what she’s learned, what she’s still working on, what she’s excited about for tomorrow. And as parents, we have found friendship and community and a knowledge that as a family we are known, we are welcome, we belong. These are tough times we live in, and Shady Hill School is a refuge and a beacon. It’s a place where our children learn kindness, decency, and service, where they can revel in childhood and a level of innocence that’s all the more precious for the ways it’s being eroded in other settings. Walking 3.0 onto campus each morning feels like a blessing, a way to start the day 2.5 in gladness, peace, goodness, and vitality. We are so fortunate to be part of SHS — the school, the community, the world it has 2.0 made. And we could not do that if it weren’t for financial aid. Thank you for your commitment to our child and our family. We1.5 return that commitment to SHS with whatever we have: our resources, our time, our skills and knowledge, whatever we can 1.0 to offer, to give back.” continue

“I give to Shady Hill because years ago, when I was a student, I benefited from the many donors who gave to support the School. Because of their love of Shady Hill, and their generosity, I had the opportunity to join this community that would change my life – for the better – forever.” –Jeita Phillips Deng ’94

Shady Hill Fund Growth FY 2010–2019

$MILLIONS

The Shady Hill Fund supports the mission-driven values and programs that make Shady Hill a special place for children to learn. With gifts to the Shady Hill Fund last year, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, parents of alumni, grandparents of alumni, and friends generously invested in the educational journey of our students in the classrooms and out on the paths. The Shady Hill Fund directly contributes to the School’s operating budget, ensuring an outstanding faculty, a dynamic program, and a diverse student body. This year, Shady Hill celebrated the inaugural May Day of Giving. Together, on campus and beyond Coolidge Hill, the Shady Hill community celebrated a longstanding school tradition. In support of students and faculty, in one day alone, the community united with more than 463 gifts to the Shady Hill Fund! We are grateful to the donors near and far who contributed to an outstanding day of collective appreciation. Thank you to the 1,273 individuals and families who gave more than $1.6 million to the Shady Hill Fund throughout the year and helped us surpass our goal!

“ Shady Hill truly set me up for a lifetime love of learning, a love I hope to pass on to my own children. Central Subject highlights include painting my shield for the Greek Olympics and drawing a life-sized blue whale in the parking lot. Both experiences have stuck with me over the years. By supporting the Shady Hill Fund, we help carry on the memorable, lasting Central Subject approach, ensuring that it reaches everyone, including students who could not otherwise afford to attend Shady Hill.”

“ The biggest swing I ever had in report cards was between 7th and 8th grades. In 7th grade, as I recall and to my parents’ dismay, I got a D in math. Just wasn’t working for me and I think to be honest I didn’t feel very motivated or confident that I could be any good at numbers. In 8th grade, I got you for math and you taught me that ‘Math is Easy, Math is Fun.’ It became so on both counts for me and I count that as an amazing accomplishment. More than that – it gave me confidence that I could excel if I put my mind to it. Who knew? This helped me in many things – not the least of which was math-related disciplines in school and even more so beyond. In retrospect on my career, I view myself as being very strong analytically and that has helped me in many ways.

“ While Shady Hill shaped me as a learner as a student, the TTC program (as we called it, the Apprentice Program) and all its magic laid an incredible foundation for me as an educator. I truly feel blessed for the ways Shady Hill has taught me to think and view the world. The way to consider the many angles a topic can be taught. The way to walk in the shoes of others to consider the world from their perspectives. I am who I am in large part due to the incredible education Shady Hill has given me and for that I am forever grateful.”

Shady Hill is a wonderful place to teach because I can be a learner within the bubbling excitement of children discovering themselves and the world around them. To work with adults who are committed to this kind of learning and growth and who love children is a gift that I appreciate more and more as I get older. Although I need to be careful to whom I confess, I feel I don’t really work for a living. I just play, and I play hard!

The 2019 Shady Hill Fund featured faculty reflecting on why they love teaching at Shady Hill. The image here and those on the following pages are reprinted from that campaign.

I am part of the lucky first grade team that gets to teach kids in the midst of their journey to becoming readers. Learning to read is an amazing thing. There is a moment for every kid where a lightbulb goes off, and all of the practice they’ve been doing makes sense. Witnessing those moments, and knowing all of the effort behind them, makes coming to school each day meaningful.

I teach students during their first year in Middle School when mature feelings surface and more complex social and emotional struggles emerge. The myriad ethnicities, rituals, and traditions of past and present China allow my students the opportunity to examine the increased complexities of their own lives. I am grateful to teach at Shady Hill where we, as teachers, encourage students to make connections between rich historical and cultural studies and their own emerging senses of self.

As a veteran teacher who is new to Shady Hill School this year, when I first visited SHS, I was so inspired by the beautiful campus with facilities that are conducive to students’ (and teachers’) learning—it’s really a great learning atmosphere! Now that I’ve been here several months, my impression hasn’t changed, and I’ve found a great community of teachers who are serious about teaching and learning. It is a pleasure to work with the outstanding Shady Hill Faculty.

The Willow Tree Society

The Willow Tree Society recognizes individuals who have provided for Shady Hill School’s future through a bequest, trust, gift annuity, retirement plan, or other similar vehicle. The Society takes its name from the beautiful willow trees that have been beloved features of Shady Hill’s landscape over the decades. The campus’s current majestic willow tree took years to reach full maturity, just as planned gifts do. Gifts seeded today will benefit Shady Hill years from now. We welcome new Willow Tree Society members at any time; more information is available at www.shs.org/ plannedgiving. We are deeply grateful to all listed below, who are already members. Susan B. “ I returned to Cambridge in 2008 after living and practicing law in Manhattan for 40 years. One of the first things I did to reconnect with people in Cambridge was visit Shady Hill. It worked, of course. I have been on campus many times since, to almost every October Fair, to evening events for parents and alumni, to art shows, and to the Olympics. I especially enjoy the Fair, and save time for the book sale; I even sometimes find books in my library bought at sales in the 1950s! I have made a contribution to Shady Hill almost every year since I got my first checking account; indeed the first contribution check I ever wrote was to Shady Hill for $10 (money then). Shady Hill is in my estate plan. I believe in giving back to institutions that have greatly helped and influenced me. They include the Shady Hill School.” –Margaret R. Loss ’61

Endowment Funds

As of June 30, 2019

A strong endowment means a strong future and, at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts — and sometimes whole new funds — added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. We are grateful to the donors behind each and every one.

Shady Hill is a responsible steward of its financial resources. A strong culture of philanthropy paired with fiscal prudence on the part of the Board of Trustees and school administration have grown our endowment and put our school in an enviable financial position. As seen in the charts below, our endowment, relative to the size of our budget and student body, is at the top of our peer schools nationwide. So too are our investment returns. The financial bedrock provided by a substantial endowment has allowed the School to keep its tuition growth below the national and local averages for PreK-8 schools, enabling access while keeping Shady Hill strong for generations to come. “ The strength of a school is often measured by its endowment, and sometimes more accurately, by its endowment per student. Small schools like Shady Hill, exceptional in this metric, have the power to enrich the student experience across limitless dimensions. As the School builds its endowment, Shady Hill improves its ability to attract worldclass teachers and administrators dedicated to the mission of the School and to the individual formation of its students. The endowment’s support of financial aid further strengthens the School’s ability to bring together a community that embraces diversity along many axes, and elevates the experience for our kids and for ourselves.

Established in 2016 to support the Hub Integrator faculty position.

Nima and Kate Eshghi Neville McCaghren and Dune Thorne Fred Wang ’65 The Fund in Support of Music Education at Shady Hill

This endowed fund, established in 2012, supports the music program at Shady Hill School. Music is an important component of the educational experience at Shady Hill. This fund is meant to help provide musical opportunities to all students and encourage participation. It may be used to help hire and retain the best available music teachers, provide a range of music ensemble options to students, support private music instruction, and help cover costs of instrument loan, rental, or purchase.

As we join you in building Shady Hill’s endowment, we realize that we are but bit players in a magnificent century-long arc of excellence. As custodians of the moment, we share the joy of dedicating ourselves to the work of those who have come before and those who will come later. As we do so, we are not only participating in the history of this special place, we are framing the origin story for our children as they prepare to shape magnificent arcs of excellence for their own lives and the lives of others.”

“ Though our journey through Shady Hill is still new, it’s clear to us that this is a happy place. It’s a place where our children have already grown as people and students; where exploration and their own creativity are embraced and nurtured. The effects of a committed and knowledgeable faculty are apparent when we pick up our kids from school and hear the excited recounting of their day, and the fact that they are genuinely excited to run off to school again each morning. It’s our pleasure to support Shady Hill and the many people who make this superb learning environment possible.”

Thank you!

“ Shady Hill is not only an amazing learning environment for our children, it is also an incredibly warm and committed community of people: parents, alumni, faculty, staff, grandparents, parents of alumni, and friends. One of the ways our community members express their love for Shady Hill is through philanthropy, knowing that gifts are the fuel that brings the School’s very mission to life. We are grateful for every single donor, as our individual gifts signify a deep bond to the School and to one another. Within this community, we are fortunate to have a solid foundation of members capable of making Shady Hill a philanthropic priority at leadership categories. We offer our sincere gratitude to them, and to all our donors.” –Pam Dickinson P ’09, P ’11, P ’14, P ’16 Director of External Relations and Strategic Engagement
