Ceramics with Mr. V

Brandon VanWormer (Mr. V) is returning to offer Ceramics to Afterschool students. Mr. V believes that clay teaches children the importance of care, attention, and patience in their actions. They learn how to use specific amounts of pressure to manipulate the material, and over time this crystallizes into muscle memory and children gain a sense of mastery over their environment.

Chess with Mr. T.

Kareem Talhouni (Mr. T.) has been playing and teaching chess for almost five decades. He even led teams to top three finishing places at the 2014 NY States tournament. He is excited to use his inquiry-based methods to teach strategic thinking and good sportsmanship. This is his 3rd year at SHS and he will be offering targeted classes, with free-play available afterwards.

Entrepreneurship from VAC

You’ll create a business plan and set up everything you need to be a junior entrepreneur. Ultimately, you’ll share your idea with friends and family, work hard to get a first customer, and present all your progress to the class. You’ll have a ton of fun and accomplish more than you ever have before!

Game Design from VAC

Ever wanted to build your own games or apps? Love Roblox or Minecraft? Well, this is the class for you! In this course, students will learn the skills of a coder through conceiving, designing, and creating their own mobile app games. It’s a great way to combine learning with fun with becoming a game developer.

Glee Club with Ms. Jamila

Jamila recently received a Master of Music as well as Professional Studies Certificate from the Boston Conservatory. She has performed as a soprano in operatic, concert, and recital settings. She brings a personal passion to Glee-Club-style acapella singing and the joyful community spirit it embodies. She has been teaching piano and voice lessons at SHS for three years.

Graphic Design from VAC

Interested in drawing, art, or design? In this class, you’ll learn how to use your doodling skills for real, by doing design projects for local nonprofits or small businesses. You will learn how to make professional posters and art that people want to pay for, and you’ll ultimately design posters and ads for real organizations with good causes. Our students' work has been used in ads and online Instagrams posts by the Special Olympics, Martha's Kitchen, and local shelters.

Hip Hop Sensibilities & Rockband with Mr. Sen Kabir Sen is a hip hop artist, songwriter, professional live band musician and a recording artist. He has been a music teacher at Shady Hill since 1999 and has extensive experience with private music lessons as well as group sessions. He is offering small group classes in hip-hop songwriting and rock band. These classes will focus on collaboration, creativity, musicality, making up and playing songs, writing lyrics, learning covers, playing instruments and having fun together!

Microwave Cooking Around the World from VAC Students will learn about food safety and cook some (oven-less) recipes from different countries. Everything will be easy to make, including finger-foods from Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. During sessions, students will play fun cooking games, learn food words from other cultures, and get simple recipes to use at home!

Theater and Improv (Yes And!) from VAC Students will explore the fundamentals of improv theater and learn how to think on their feet. You'll develop your acting skills through fun exercises and games, as well as learn the art of "Yes And" – a technique that encourages collaboration and creativity. Whether you're a seasoned actor or a beginner, this class will help you develop your confidence and creativity on stage.

Soccer from VAC

In this class, students who are newer to the game will have the opportunity to improve and refine every facet of their soccer game, walking away with improved ball-handling skills, a higher soccer IQ and better overall athleticism.
