From the Head of School & Chair of the Board of Trustees Our Mission

During this Thanksgiving season, when our community pauses to reflect and express gratitude, this Report on Philanthropy is our way of conveying thanks to all who supported Shady Hill School over the 2017–2018 school year.

Shady Hill School wants children to be joyful, active learners who develop the intellectual discipline necessary to become contributing, ethical citizens. To accomplish these ends, we believe in the primacy of exploration and discovery, we advance the mastery of skills, and we help students shape meaning from knowledge.

Shady Hill’s educational mission, underscored by our Central Subject approach, constantly asks our students to put themselves in other people’s shoes in order to understand their struggles and triumphs. Our pedagogy fosters empathy, the bedrock of ethical citizenship, while developing the intellectual discipline and the myriad skills and habits needed to think critically, consider multiple perspectives, and take meaningful action. This approach to education has never been more important: the world we live in demands lifelong learners who care about the world and are passionate about—and equipped to work for—its betterment. But we could not do this vital work without your support and involvement. Schools like Shady Hill are philanthropically supported institutions, meaning we rely on donors to underwrite our mission and on volunteers to strengthen our community. In the pages that follow, we convey a heartfelt thank you to our alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends of the School whose contributions have sustained and strengthened this vibrant place during Fiscal Year 2018. Each donor and volunteer in this report represents a commitment to the people and programs of Shady Hill. We feel the impact of your philanthropy every day, and the world feels it through the lives of our students and alumni. Sincerely,

Mark J. Stanek Head of School

2017–2018 Leadership Volunteers Shady Hill Fund Volunteers

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, and friends of the School who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2017–18 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are enriching our School’s programming, student experience, and fundraising efforts.

STEAM Update We are grateful to these donors who made pledge payments to the To Build. To Endow. To Preserve. Campaign in FY18:

The Hub marked its second year of use as a teaching facility in 2017–2018. According to Makerspace Managers Barbara Bratzel and Francesco Cupolo, “the Makerspace has enhanced teaching at Shady Hill in many special ways.” We interviewed Ms. Bratzel and Mr. Cupolo (pictured above in left-hand photo) to find out more about this intriguing statement. Ms. Bratzel: In the two years since

the Hub opened, we have run lessons and projects of all sorts in the Makerspace. There are so many exciting high-tech tools: the laser cutter, 3-D printers, LEGO Robotics, etc. as well as many familiar lowtech tools. We continue to learn a lot about how to integrate these great resources into the curriculum throughout the School. Mr. Cupolo: From Kindergarten

on up, students come to the Hub for science classes and, starting in fifth grade, they come for math as well. The Makerspace is used by all grades—its central location within the Hub means that it’s always buzzing with activities. Especially during Middle School recess when our doors are open to students working on their own individual or collaborative projects. Students also have the chance to go in depth with Makerspace projects during the seventh- and eighth-grade Design Elective or during Afterschool.

Ms. Bratzel: This is possible thanks to

increased teaching time, now that Mr. Cupolo has joined me. We each teach part-time in the Makerspace, making it staffed full-time. This means access for more students to develop handson STEAM skills and the creative thinking and collaborative workhabits they engender. For instance, coding has been added for all second, third, and fourth graders. Mr. Cupolo: We also serve as a

creative space for the entire school. I love it when gradeheads have us host a special Makerspace project that directly relates to what they are working on in class. Ms. Bratzel: How could you not love

it? It’s light, airy, packed with tools and materials. To say it’s inspiring is no exaggeration. And I don’t mean just for students; we’re inspired ourselves, as teachers!”

Grade VI Building Project We are grateful to the Grade VI Building Project donors:

The transformation of the old science building into a new Grade VI home base could not be more exciting! As many of you know, Grade VI is our biggest admission entry point in middle school; we welcome 16–18 new students and their families each year. It is a time developmentally when making new friends, exploring one’s identity, and growing by leaps and bounds all collide. Sixth graders are full of energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity, and they long for connection everywhere—academically, socially, and emotionally. Bringing all four Grade VI gradehead classes together under one roof will finally unite our mission and philosophy, the learning space, and the students and gradeheads. The process by which this building came to be could not have been more quintessentially Shady Hill. The gradeheads and I were grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our architects and designers from Eck McNeely, members of the Master Planning Committee and Facilities Department, and our Head of School Mark Stanek. We were asked to give input all along the way, and the lead architect, Meredith Chamberlin, listened and made revisions to the building and classroom layouts to accommodate the needs of students and their learning, ensuring that every aspect of the project would be built to the proper scale and design, even down to the fixtures, tiles, and furniture. The fact that the building’s concept was understood and funded so quickly is testament to the generosity of so many, and we are so thankful! This space promises to be remarkable, and we can’t wait to move in next fall. We extend our heartfelt thanks and hope you’ll come and visit us upon completion.

The Willow Tree Society The Willow Tree Society recognizes individuals who have provided for Shady Hill School’s future through a bequest, trust, gift annuity, retirement plan, or other similar vehicle. 2018 saw two extraordinary estate gifts mature. One of them was created in the 1950s by the father of Lucy Tullock Sharp, member of the TTC Class of 1941. The Tullock Trust was structured to provide lifetime income for Lucy and her husband, the latter of whom lived to be over 100 years old. When he passed away last year, the trust liquidated, sending a share to Shady Hill. The second planned gift that matured this year came from Penelope Pinson, of the TTC Class of 1945, who passed away at the age of 101 last year. Just as the beautiful willow tree on campus (pictured here) took years to reach full maturity, so too do planned gifts. As the Tullock and Pinson trusts both illustrate, gifts seeded today will benefit Shady Hill years from now. We welcome new Willow Tree Society members at any time; more information is available at www.shs.org/plannedgiving. We are deeply grateful to all listed below who are already members.

As a Shady Hill alumnus, I have acted as class agent and have either chaired or co-chaired every reunion. These activities have nurtured many friendships and fond memories of my youthful experiences while at the School. I value SHS and all that it has done for me, the result being that I contribute to every annual fund and have included Shady Hill in my estate plan with a bequest. It’s what I want to do to help a wonderful institution continue to grow and prosper.” Tare Newbury '53

The Shady Hill Fund The Shady Hill Fund supports the mission-driven values and programs that make Shady Hill a special place for children to learn. With gifts to the Shady Hill Fund last year, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, parents of alumni, grandparents of alumni, and friends generously invested in the educational journey of our students in the classrooms and out on the paths. The Shady Hill Fund directly contributes to the School’s operating budget, ensuring a diverse student body and an outstanding faculty. We thank the nearly 1,300 individuals and families who gave more than $1.5 million to the Shady Hill Fund and helped us surpass our goal.

I thoroughly enjoyed my years at Shady Hill and consider it the source of my foundational learning, from the subjects I studied to how to make friends and deal with my classmates socially. The education I received here, specifically learning how to always be open to learning new ideas and abilities, prepared me for college courses, graduate school, and the new skills and knowledge I needed to gain later in the business and philanthropic world. Yet when I was in school, I had fun and never realized that the education I was receiving was preparing me for life. I want children who may have an economic barrier to attending Shady Hill to have the same opportunity to experience the students, teachers, and education that I had when I was here.”

Shady Hill fosters curiosity. Excitement around learning— something I continue to carry with me—has connected and anchored me to people and places I cherish. These people and places have shaped my understanding of community and the importance of engagement, empathy, and trust.” Elena Rodriguez-Villa '08

TTC Alumni Class of 2016

As an apprentice at Shady Hill, there was a profound sense of belonging because of the deep caring, exceptional rigor, and joy my teachers, mentors, and fellow apprentices demonstrated to me as a budding educator. It was because of this commitment to outstanding education and compassion for students that the experience of being an apprentice was transformational on many levels. I continue to have a strong connection to Shady Hill because it holds the foundation upon which I built my career. Today, I am proud to remain a part of the intelligent and thoughtful community at Shady Hill.” Catherine Fischer TTC '81

Shady Hill has felt like home since I started in Beginners over 40 years ago, and I’ve been lucky enough to send my three kids here, too. My youngest graduates this spring, but that won’t be the end of my time at the School. Shady Hill is the kind of place that stays with you throughout your entire life.” Holly Edmonds '84, TTC '94

At Shady Hill, our kids have been nurtured and taught in a way that has kept them engaged and curious— they love their teachers, friends, and the time they spend in school. We have ourselves discovered many new friends among the parents of Shady Hill. We live in a world where our kids will need to work well with others, collaborate, invent new solutions to hard problems, and think creatively to make the world a better place. We love how the teachers at the School give the kids the tools they need to get there. Making science and math fun for kids is the best gift a parent can receive—and the time our children spend in the Hub is their favorite time spent at school.” Miguel & Laura De Icaza

We are so grateful to be a part of a school community with such a strong sense of ownership and commitment. Faculty, parents, students, and administrators engage to make Shady Hill the energetic and happy place that it is. Education extends beyond the walls of the classroom at Shady Hill. We feel confident that our sons are being challenged to think differently about the world around them and to embrace differences and similarities in their peers. We give so that we may all continue to benefit from the same opportunities for inclusive and community-driven teaching.” Brooksie Robbins & Bobo Widing-Jonsson P'25, P'27

Having grown up in Cambridge jealous of my friends at Shady Hill who told me of a dress code that included waders and of the fifth-grade job to row faculty to the classrooms, I arrived as a new faculty member at Shady Hill 20 years ago. I have been finding old friends from childhood, discovering long lost cousins, growing with new friends, vicariously living the life of a SHS student through my children, and wondering at the vast interconnection of Shady Hill folks ever since. It is a home in many senses!” Ross Fitzgerald P'13, P'20

A strong endowment means a strong future and, at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts—and sometimes whole new funds—added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. We are grateful to the donors behind each and every one.

Our family’s experience at Shady Hill has been truly magical. We are grateful for the privilege of having our daughters attend a school that they adore, that is so thoughtful about each individual student’s experience at the School, and that is committed not only to academics but to all aspects of its students’ development. We have always valued the warmth of the SHS community, are honored to be a part of it, and are often humbled to see it in action. Every teacher, staff member, family, and student at Shady Hill plays a role in making the community so incredible and in making the School the amazing place that it is. We are delighted to give to Shady Hill to support the School’s wonderful people and the many ways that they enhance our daughters’ lives and the lives of all Shady Hill students—past, present, and future.” Jeff & Lisa Case, P'23, P'25, P'27

Philanthropy is woven into Shady Hill’s very fabric. Each year, members of our community give joyfully and generously to the School, making possible our unique program, incredible faculty, diverse student body, and beautiful campus. As a parent of four Shady Hill graduates, and now the School’s Director of External Relations, I am reminded daily of the many things that make our School distinct and special—the laughter on the paths, the energy of the Fair, the grace and pride of the May Day dances. Our beloved traditions bring Shady Hill’s very mission to life. We are grateful to every single person who supports this mission by making a gift to the School. As a community, we are fortunate to have a strong foundation of members who make Shady Hill a philanthropic priority and can give in the leadership categories. Our thanks to them, our thanks to everyone.” Pam Dickinson Director of External Relations P'09, P'11, P'14, P'16

Shady Hill would not be the school it is today without the strong philanthropic backing of those in a position to give so generously. On behalf of all who learn and grow at this fine school—now and in the future, we offer deep thanks.
