Urban Cemetery: Constructed Ruin Professor Hansjoerg Goeritz, 2020 Constructed Ruin explores the idea of a cemetery in an urban context. In doing so, our team used the technical elements of the integrations studio course to explore the ways we can make this traditionally horizontal program a vertical one. Our design focuses attention on ideas of ascension and descension to the Tennessee River, and how it can be reached symbolically and physically throughout the project.

The relationship to the river reveals itself through a connection to its water table, and also through a series of descending rings of columbarium and mausoleum walls. These surfaces are broken up by the inclusion of visitation rooms, a chapel, a crematorium, embalming rooms, and our secondary circulation system of towers. As we developed our primary circulation, we reinforced this theme of rising and falling by allowing descension throughout the columbarium and mausoleum to reach the seemingly untouchable river.

Throughout our team’s design process, we have used the information we have gathered about our site to inform the decisions that are evident throughout the project. Our research in historical buildings and landmarks also proved helpful to maintain the character and dignity of the area. The urban cemetery takes the place of a dilapidated surface lot, and now offers a more efficient parking experience for the surrounding areas while eliminating the pre-existing heat sink.

Gradience: A New Community Center Professor Jennifer Akerman, 2019

With GRADIENCE, I explored the capacity of architecture to support platform in a more active way. How can architecture take a stance on its own, without needing a voice to translate its own declaration? How will form and program be redesigned to fulfill this goal? What role does the relationship and intertwining of form and function play within architecture’s call to action? The following drawings dissect architecture’s willingness to display advocacy and the ability for thoughtful design to advance this power. The following community center design hosts three aspects of transformational program prescribed by the design brief: a creative art space, a nonprofit, and an area for recreation.

To fulfill these requirements, I created a printmaking lab, a soup kitchen, an amphitheater, and gallery hubs.

No programmed space is fully separated by walls, but is instead placed along a path [The Table] that moves between zones of activity. Influencing the main circulation throughout the space, The Table carries bowls of soup from the kitchen and sends them to the awaiting people in need.

03 Cabinet of Curiosities: Whelk Professor Marshall Prado, 2019 This representational project was inspired by the classic cabinets of curiosities, a collection of items and relics that exude a certain intrigue or interest to the curator. These items were meant to be displayed together across an expanse of shelves in order for the audience to view all items together as a performance.

As an architectural project, I was tasked to choose an item that ignites an interest within me, in regards to its morphology, texture, or appearance. I chose the common whelk, a type of large marine snail. I decided to focus on its shell and the perceived density and curvature. We then used software like Rhinoceros and Grasshopper to abstract its form, and then used this data to reconstruct a new physical morphology.

I used displaced slices of the whelk’s shell to emphasize its depth and curves, and pulled strings across its surface to manipulate the swell of its hollow, swirled interior.

Study: Muller and Truniger Architekten Professors Katherine Ambroziak and Tracey Moir-Mcclean, 2018 In the tectonics and stereotomics course, I was tasked to research an architectural precedent and build a basswood maquette to display my understanding of its structural organization.

My assigned precedent was the Operations Building in Frutigen, Switzerland.

Built in May 2008 and designed by Muller and Truniger Architekten, it illustrates a strong concept of a layered facade and innovative structural technology. In my structural maquette, I chose to emphasize the outer shell of spliced support elements that contrasts its narrow inner core.

Proto-Architecture: Self-Forming Compliance Professor Marshall Prado, 2021 In order to explore design potentials of innovative materials and methods, our team was tasked with developing a new system of building and craft. Thematically, fibrous systems and other tension winding was adapted by each team.

Our designs were both handcrafted and wound computationally by the UTK Fab Lab’s Kuka Robot. Throughout this project, we questioned the industry’s standard design process and inherited thinking from biological processes and existing biomimetic archetypes.

Our team focused on the question of self-forming compliance, based on our individual analysis of biological morphology—the fern, pinecone, and armadillo. Using these systems and attaching new ways of thinking to the architectural design process, our team creating a bench with the ability to change direction and shape when connecting new pieces at every junction. We were able to determine the capacity of biomimetic design and fibrous morphology to catalyze innovation in the built environment.

Genetic Drift Professor Mark Stanley, 2018 This representational project was an exploration and essential first practice of programs such as Rhinoceros, V-Ray, and Grasshopper as a consecutive workflow. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom were used to finish the pieces.

In the following rendered images, I displayed my interpretation of an arbitrary pairing of adjectives formed by a randomly generated Punnet Square. In the first image, I illustrate “smooth + dimpled.” In the second image, I display “curled + meshed.”

Do-Si-Do and Other Dances of Appalachia Professor Jeremy Magner, 2021 In this exploration of Appalachian craft and material, our team proposed a collection of communal spaces onto a swath of land that swelled around the Appalachian Trail crossing in Hot Springs, North Carolina. Using lithic, xylological, and metallurgical studies and framing, our team inspired grottos, bathhouses, temples, electric, humble, leisure, and labor spaces across the mountains.

The various teams working on this project constantly combined and rebuffed, making the work dynamic energetic and exciting. The do-si-do of ideas laid heavily upon the roots of southern hospitality, and created such deep respect for teams with other-worldly knowledge and differing priorities.

THRIFT Fashion Show Archive 2019 The Theodorus Chapter of Alpha Rho Chi presents THRIFT, an annual fashion show held during The All-college Annual Spring Thing. Student teams design and curate looks for each year’s theme and are only permitted to use materials from local thrift stores.

At the show’s debut, I compiled the designs of each team in the form of an photoshoot in the upstairs loft of the venue. In the following pages, I display an overview of each team’s collection that they curated, designed, and broadcasted.

Film Photography I consider photography in all forms to be one of my most prized passions. In recent years, my father’s and my grandfather’s film cameras were passed on to me. In my travels and time of leisure, I enjoy being able to look at the world without instant gratification, knowing I may wait weeks to see a final product.

Film photography helps me imagine the world in snapshots. Knowing that each captured moment will soon be emulsified permanently onto film makes me excited to see more.

Thrown Pottery 2021 I spent a semester studying the art of throwing clay on the potters’ wheel, learning from Professor Frank Martin from the University of Tennessee’s School of Art. Through this pseudo-sabbatical, I learned the basic techniques and fundamental practices of preparing clay, forming ceramic pieces on the wheel, trimming vessels into shape, glazing, and slip treatments.

The focus was mainly on three basic silhouettes of vessels: the bowl, the cylinder, and the vase. Once these forms had been practiced, I finished 10 exceptional bowls, 10 exceptional vases, and a set of 6 decorated mugs. In the next pages, I have prepared a selection of my favorite final pieces.
