Founded in 1922, Saint Gertrude High School has a rich history of providing students with a challenging yet nurturing educational experience. This tradition continues today as a result of our steadfast focus on our mission and the generosity of the Saint Gertrude community. This publication is a small way for us to celebrate you and the many young lives you have changed through your generosity.

We are extremely proud to report that we have collectively raised more than $700,000 for Saint Gertrude as a result of total giving during 2018-19. Because of your stewardship and our passionate giving community, we were able to support tuition for the many families who would otherwise not be able to afford a Catholic high school education for their daughters. What’s even more impressive is that over $140,000 of that total was raised in just 24 hours during our annual Day of Giving in June. To put that into perspective, over onethird of our donations were given on this day – how incredible it was to see our community come together to finish off our fiscal year!

Throughout this report, you will see statistics accompanying the donor lists that give you an insight on who is giving. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t call your attention to our parent participation for this year. During 2018-19, we had 80% of current parents give back to the Fund for Saint Gertrude – the highest ever in the school’s history.

This level of engagement and support not only makes me a proud alumnae, but gives me confidence in our community as we move forward into the future.

PLANNED GIVING

THREE TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS

Planned giving allows you to make charitable gifts now or after your lifetime while enjoying financial benefits for yourself and your loved ones.

• Outright gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash (e.g. stocks whose value has risen since purchase) • Gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution (e.g. a charitable remainder trust) • Gifts payable upon the donor’s death (e.g. life insurance policy)

Unlike cash donations, these gifts are typically made from assets rather than from disposable income, and may come to fruition upon your death or during your lifetime.

While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor’s estate.

Thus, by definition, a planned gift is any major gift, made during one’s lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial or estate plan.

Whether a donor uses cash, appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, etc., the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive and beneficial to both the donor and Saint Gertrude High School.

There are many other types of planned gifts..

TAX BENEFITS OF PLANNED GIFTS Donors who contribute appreciated property, like securities, receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset, and pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.

Donors who establish a life-income gift receive a tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the assets contributed, minus the present value of the income interest retained; if they fund their gift with appreciated property, they pay no upfront capital gains tax on the transfer.

Gifts payable to charity upon the donor’s death, like a bequest or a beneficiary designation in a life insurance policy or retirement account, do not generate a lifetime income tax deduction for the donor, but they are exempt from estate tax.

Sunset at the OAC ( formerly known as TailGator) was held on October 20, 2018 at Saint Gertrude High School’s Outdoor Athletic Center. This event brings the school community together for an evening of fun, entertainment, and lawn games in a casual outdoor setting. The proceeds from this event help support our athletic program.
