A few weeks ago, I found myself in a darkened room at an arcade, struggling to put on a heavy, bulky vest. A large gun dangled from a cord. I was seconds away from being transformed from Debbie Sanders, Mild-Mannered Grandmother, to...wait for it...Debbie Sanders, Laser Tag Sharpshooter. The last time I had done any shooting I was six, wearing my Annie Oakley leather holster, my red cowgirl hat, and toting a pair of silver cap guns. Outlaws trembled! I had no clue what I was getting into, but grandsons Drew and Jackson wanted to play laser tag, so I was in. We ducked around “buildings,” defended our base camp, and bravely charged the enemy (most of whom only came up to my elbow). It was such a hoot that we played three more times. Within the last month, I’ve played some serious dodge ball with them at a martial arts studio, and run around my back yard squealing while they soaked me -- and my hair -- with a water hose. When my daughters hear these stories, I get The Look. You know, the one where you can tell they’re thinking “who are you and what have you done with my mother!?” For when Stacey and Allison were the ages of Drew and Jackson, they had a different mom. Back then, I would never have done anything that would make me look silly or mussed up or (horrors!) wet. For example, we went to Silver Dollar City in Branson every summer. Stacey and Ali always begged to do the log plume ride. Where you get wet. Really wet. Even your hair. There was no way I could do that. So, we would wait for a couple who didn’t look like axemurderers to walk by. I would ask if the girls could ride with them. Then I watched, with dry hair and clothes, from the sidelines. In fairness, I came by this naturally. I was raised in a family that drove to Springfield (45 miles away) every summer Saturday to shop. In the Fifties. Before cars were air-conditioned. We made the trip with all the windows securely rolled up because my mother didn’t want her hair (or ours) to blow. (Evidently sweating was A-okay!) My transformation happened when Drew came along. His third birthday celebration was at a party place packed with inflatable slides. One was
quite tall, and when Drew yelled out for me to go with him, I didn’t hesitate. I wanted him to think I was fun. We went through tunnels and climbed around barriers. I was feeling pretty darn athletic for a grandmother. Then we rounded a corner and I saw how you got to the top of the slide. A “rock wall” of inflatable protrusions you had to climb. I got about three-fourths of the way up and couldn’t go any further. Of course, Drew was long gone. I kept trying to find something to grab to hoist myself over the top. At one point, I looked down and saw two little girls climbing up behind me. I flashed on a People magazine story with the headline “Out-of-shape grandmother crushes two toddlers in bizarre bouncy slide accident.” The adrenaline kicked in and I scrambled over the top. Then I slid and grinned and squealed all the way to the bottom of the slide. That was my first lesson in having fun and not caring how I looked. It was a wonderful lesson. One of the best in my life. I’m trying to apply that lesson to other areas, too. Scrapbookers of the world, perhaps we should lighten up. Our layouts don’t have to be “perfect” and we don’t have to be “caught up.” You shouldn’t care if anyone likes the porcupine embellishment you made out of baker’s twine and I shouldn’t care if all my paper strips are precisely one-sixteenth of an inch apart. Did we have fun making the layouts? Did we capture precious memories? Yes and yes? There you go. That’s what’s important. Let go of those expectations of what you “should” be doing, and what things “should” look like, and just enjoy the process. Make a layout. Get a little messy. Have a little fun. But please...don’t let that layout get wet.

• Gift bag: Cover with patterned paper. Die-cut two pinecones. Layer pinecones, leaves and netting (grocery store onion bag) in bottom corner. Layer patterned paper, die-cuts, twine, stickers. Add ribbon bow to handle. • Treat container: Use small bottle or washi tape packaging (like this one from My Mind's Eye) to create a container for chocolate and mini marshmallows. Wrap container with patterned papers and twine. Layer die-cuts and stickers to front. Add twigs. Decorate with stickers and squares of paper rounded to look like marshmallows. • Tent pop-up card (closed card shown at right): To create the tent, cut a paper rectangle and fold in half. Fold a small edge on both sides to attach to card. Center the tent in the middle of the open card base, adhere. Fold bottom edges of several diecuts and adhere to card to create more pop-up embellishments that will lie flat when card is closed. Add a strip of twine across the tent; add stickers and the sentiment. Complete by decorating the front. Transform an ordinary piece of raw chipboard by creating a vintage patina look. Just layer several different shades of blue, green, and bronze paint until you get the combination you love.

Use paint for stamping. Just be sure to wash the stamp quickly after you have used it!
Use paint instead of ink for the edges of your paper. The bonus is being able to mix your own custom colors.

Instead of adding a mat to a photo, try using a make-up sponge and paint to create a frame around the photo. It’s a great way to define the edges and make those photos stand out.

Cut a shape to use as a template/mask and with a pencil eraser dipped in paint, dab it around the shape for a uniquely created shape.
Run removable adhesive in rows across the background and paint over the top. After the paint dries, rub off the adhesive to reveal a fun, grungy background.

To get a different look, I switched the background and the strips. Instead of using a solid sheet of paper for the background, I used strips, and in place of the strips I used a solid sheet of paper. It always amazes me how simple little adjustments like that can change the whole look of a sketch!

I used a 7x5 photo in place of the 6x4 photo on the sketch. Since the photo is 1-inch larger in both width and height, I added an inch to the background papers to accommodate the larger photo. Anytime you add a larger photo you can simply adjust the sketch by adding larger pieces or if you use smaller photos, adjust by taking away some of the pieces on the sketch.

A fun way to change up a sketch is to flip it. For this layout, I flipped the sketch so that the strips are now horizontal instead of vertical like they are on the sketch.

I had four horizontal photos that I wanted to work with, so instead of having one large photo with two accent photos, I made them all the same size and grouped them together. They still basically cover the same general area on the sketch, they are just arranged in a different way. Most of the time you can change a lot on a sketch, but if you arrange things in the same general area as they are on a sketch, you'll end up with a well-designed and balanced layout, even if it doesn't match the sketch exactly.

Since I used one long strip of photos, I had to move my title and journaling to the side.
I used a strip of stars in place of one of the strips of paper. Just because it shows a strip of paper on the sketch doesn't mean you can't change it up. Try using small shapes arranged in a row like I did, or substitute ribbon, twine, work stickers, border strips, etc. for the paper. Just think of all the shapes you could use to get different looks, hearts, arrows, circles, butterflies, flowers, squares, and more.

I had a lot of photos that I wanted to use so I stretched the sketch into a two-page layout. It's just like you grab the sketch and pull it to stretch, kind of like a piece of taffy. The layout still follows the design as the sketch, but everything has been adjusted to fit the larger layout. I used more strips and a longer background.

Instead of using multiple sizes of strips, I simplified it by using strips of all the same size. I also used taller strips than the sketch suggests to accommodate the taller photos I used. Since the photos are an inch taller than the photo on the sketch, I added an inch to the strips of paper.

I added a second background piece to the left side of the layout. Stretching the sketch left a lot of empty space on the left page so I decided to fill a little bit of it with another background. I also added a little heart banner to the top corner.

For this layout I extended the sketch to fit a two-page layout by adding a photo block on the right page that matched the height of the design on the left page. I also extended the design to the right of the photo block on the right page. This is another really easy way to make a one-page sketch work as a two-page layout, by adding a large photo block.

I decided to just use strips in place of the background, a combination because the strips are the same height as the solid piece on the sketch. I also extended the strips across the whole page. I love the look of lots of strips on a layout. It's always a great way to include a lot of colors and patterns without it being overwhelming.

I changed the orientation of the main photo by using a 4x6 photo instead of a 6x4 photo. Since I used the strips in place of the background, there was plenty of height to the strips to allow a taller photo without covering them all up.

I made a two-page layout out of the onepage sketch by stretching the sketch and adding a large photo. I love using larger photos sometimes. I used a 7x10 photo and then made the solid background piece 10 inches tall to match the height of the photo.

I moved the small accent photos to the left of the main grouping of photos. I didn't want to cover up Jackson's face in the large photo, but I still wanted to include those photos. Moving them to the left was easy and didn't require adjustments to anything else.

I moved both the title and the journaling. I liked the look of the title being grouped with the small accent photos. I ended up eliminating the journaling area with the main grouping of photos so I had to find a new home for it. There was just enough empty space in the bottom right corner of the large photo.

It’s a constant wish. More time in each day! But since we know that’s not going to happen, fortunately there are ways to save time when scrapbooking. Sometimes I like to get a layout done quickly. At other times, I like to enjoy the process more. But for me, it’s always all about time.

THE ONE-HOUR LAYOUT
HOW IT WORKS FOR ME... My first step is to choose a sketch. Ones that allow lots of small areas for personalization and embellishment are my favorites. When I designed this sketch, I wondered if it might be too busy, but after I started working with it I had so much fun decorating each of the circles. I like to use collections that have enough pattern choices for a layout like this when you need lots of contrasts in color and pattern and scale. That speeds up my process, because I don’t have to hunt for other papers to supplement my initial choices. My biggest time saver? Choosing to work within one paper collection, like the Authentique “Pretty” group I used for this layout.

THE THREE-HOUR LAYOUT

HOW I SPENT MY TIME... Identical papers, identical photos, but a huge difference in time spent crafting. Some time was spent selecting coordinating items. I used accent stitching around three of the circles, stamped journaling blocks and other items, and deconstructed flowers, adding heart brads in the center. My favorite embellishment idea for this layout was the mint green hearts. I punched hearts out of corrugated paper, sanded and lightly inkied the ridges, brushed the entire surface with rock candy distress glitter glue, then sprinkled chunky distress glitter on top. The result was a thick, frosty coating that I love. I’ll definitely be trying this simple technique again.

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 Because the circle area is the focal point of the sketch, and since I knew I wanted the circles to be a mix of lots of patterns, I chose the background paper carefully. I really wanted the circles to stand out, so this black paper with a white pinstripe was a perfect choice. All the patterns show up well and don’t have to compete with the background paper for attention.
DEBBIE’S TIP #2 While the right side of this layout is mainly embellishments, the left side is mainly photos. Even though the amount of decorative items added is small, I made sure to use both colors and embellishments that were found on the right page, to bring cohesion to the layout.
DEBBIE’S TIP #3 Be adventurous! While I was making this layout, a sheet of mint green corrugated paper caught my eye. It was the perfect color, but I wanted a bit of a distressed, toned-down, color instead of the brighter green. So I experimented! After I sanded and lightly inked the ridges and edges, I brushed on a really thick coating of Ranger’s Rock Candy Distress Glitter Glue, then immediately sprinkled on Ranger’s Rock Candy Distress Glitter. I couldn’t wait for it to dry! Turned out to be a simple (which I love) technique that I can’t wait to try again.

s owner and proprietor of Authentique Paper, Samantha brings a savvied business mind to the table. She has worked in the papercraft industry for many years, and formed a special respect for small business owners in her youth, raised around a multi-generational family-owned retail business. Sam earned her degree in business and finance in order to be knowledgeable in major aspects of business. She has a keen eye for design, and interior design -- especially use of color and scale -- is one of her talents. She is a culinary expert and has been featured on morning television cooking segments, using many of her own recipes. A knack for knowing when things are "just right" is one of her skills, and Authentique Paper's artistic style and commitment to quality have been influenced by Samantha’s gifts and talents. Described as positive, upbeat, quietly confident and strong, Sam is most comfortable performing her role and allowing others to shine. She is a warm weather girl who looks for any opportunity to travel and will do so at a moment's notice. She loves her dog Coco and they can often be seen side-by-side, whether at home with the family, in the office, or on the go.

aving built and sold a successful hobby and craft company, Bret's leadership style and manufacturing knowledge are once again being utilized by Authentique Paper. He has assembled an all-star cast of talented professionals and enjoys a behindthe-scenes role with the company. Bret's resume also includes being twice named a vice-president for multi-million dollar companies. He has most recently been involved as a business consultant and sales trainer. He is a passionate leader who directs the business with a forward-thinking vision. Bret is a certified business coach and created Thoughtgate, a corporate culture training program. He also maintains interest in a gourmet seafood cannery and a fashion headwear brand. Bret and his wife Samantha are raising three children. They love to travel, attend sporting events, and frequent their favorite restaurants. Bret enjoys the arts and has served as a board member for two foundations, helping raise thousands of dollars for worthy causes. He played collegiate baseball and enjoys sports, especially golf. He has coached both of his daughter's soccer and basketball teams. He loves to wash the cars, get together with friends and listen to his son to share bits of wisdom.

Jody Kirklin, design
ody is the silent hero of Authentique Paper and an invaluable member of the Authentique family. She has spent over a decade as an in-house designer of stationary, scrapbooking and kids’ crafting products. Determined, teamminded, and quietly confident, Jody is better at sharing compliments than receiving them. This trait, perhaps, best sums up her genuine and selfless nature. Extremely self-motivated, Jody works tirelessly to execute the Authentique vision. Her dedication and passion are reflected in the depth and range of her work. She is a perfectionist who ensures her work is thorough. Jody is inspired by the world around her and can see patterns and color palettes everywhere. She has a love of music, movies and books. She has been known to talk in quotes or start singing a song based on something said in conversation. Jody is a health-nut and her treadmill is her self-proclaimed best friend. A day doesn’t pass without her “treading” at least once, if not twice. She has a love of family and time with them is a premium. She is married to a motorcycling, camping, adventure-seeker, who is still trying to convince her to love the outdoors more than she thinks a person should. They enjoy spending free time renovating their home, which was purchased as a re-do, allowing them to start with a blank slate, a designer’s dream.

mily is the design team and social media coordinator for Authentique Paper. Company leaders describe her as fun, bright, well-organized, passionate, and fully committed. Because she is a crafter herself, Emily has a knowledge of papercrafting which helps her fulfill her job responsibilities. She understands the nuances of various forms of crafting such as card-making, altered-art, albums, and more. She plays a huge behind-the-scenes role for Authentique Paper and interacts with everyone on the Authentique design team, as well as the home office, to keep everyone connected and current on social media trends. After a mild loss of interest in her hobby, she recently found the strength to get back into papercrafting and decided to combine her skills and talents in organization as well as the creative side of the business. Emily is a stay at home mom. She lives in southern Ohio and is married to the love of her life, Brandon. Her husband is very supportive of her hobby and job, and provides constant encouragement for her to “keep at it!” Emily has a daughter, Reagan, and a stepson, Reid.

Hello, scrappy friends! Welcome to the second installment of a threepart series on the making and using of scrapbook page kits. We are going to build on the process we started in part one. The focus this round is batch layout kits.
A tutorial that will save you time and ramp up your productivity! ................
page kits BATCH LAYOUT
Creating page kits for a “batch” or a bigger group of photos is an excellent way to
increase your scrapbooking time and a huge timesaver, because you are essentially working from ONE KIT.
Additionally, this type of page kitting is perfect for trips, holidays, or any other event for which you have a large amount of photographs.
In the following example, I will show how I
created a batch page kit for 34 layouts! This will result in 17 double-page spreads for my vacation album. That is just pure scrap happiness!

Like I emphasized in part one of this series (in the July issue of CREATE), this is just my approach. Please feel free to make this process fit your personal scrap style. So...let’s get started!

step no.1 SELECT PHOTOS.
My photos are mostly printed in 4x6 and
wallet format. You can see that I have 17 photo groupings selected.
step no.2
SELECT A SKETCH...
book or class. Choose a class or sketch book that will offer a variety of sketches for your photo groupings. I chose Allison Davis’ “6x6 Paper Pad” class, which is absolutely wonderful for batch layout kits. If you want to create easy, eye-catching layouts quickly, this class is a must!

SELECT PATTERNED PAPER.
Since I am using Allison’s 6x6 class, it was very easy to select a 6x6 paper pad or two for each photo groupng. Take notes along the way of each selection.
step no.4
SELECT CARDSTOCK.
Select your cardstock and background papers. Then bag each photo grouping with the 6x6 paper pad choice. This will prevent your photos and selections from getting separated or becoming confusing. Trust me on this! Any 7x7 plastic baggie will work.
step no.5
SELECT PRODUCT...
and memorabilia. This is the time to break out the specific products and supplies and memorabilia you want to use on these layouts. If it is a tool or item that is hard to bag, make note of it for future reference.
step no.6 SELECT TOOLS.
Choose tools for the job. Remember, you are doing several pages, so give yourself lots of options so you won’t get bored with your choices. Make notes of these selections. Replace tools back into your stash or store in a box or bin allocated just for this batch kit.
step no.7 SELECT STAMPS.
If you are wanting to use some stamps or try other special techniques, gather those supplies, too. Again, make notes of ay details or special instructions. I select my inks or any other type liquid product when I am creating the page.
step no.8 SELECT ALPHAS.
Look over your photos and paper choices and select a variety of colors and sizes of letter stickers. If you want to create and use die-cut alphas and titles, select your fonts now and make note of these choices.
step no.9
SELECT WASHI TAPE... twine, and other items. Choose a few supplies -- like washi tape and bakers twine -- that you can get a lot of mileage out of on your pages. Again, you are creating several pages, so be sure to include a variety of colors and textures.
step no.10 EMBELLISHMENTS.
Happily named “the fun stuff!” Select a variety of items in your color scheme. Choose from older items in your stash, new items just in, or any product you are happy to create with.
step no.11 GO-TO SUPPLIES.
Again, there are some supplies and tools you naturally are drawn to when you scrap, so make note of them. When you sit to scrap, just pull them out as needed.

Bagged or boxed. Since this is a much bigger kit, you can store it in several bags or perhaps even a plastic case. Use whatever works for you to keep the entire kit together and contained. Then...enjoy! You have just compiled a mega page kit. When the mood strikes to work on this trip or special event, just pull out your “batch kit” and create. Work from just this kit and quickly see how fast and easy your layouts will come together. I guarantee it! “This is a wonderful summer color combination. The challenge for me was finding photos to coordinate with the papers I wanted to use. But one thing I have noticed over the years with my scrapbooking...I don't need to worry too much about the colors matching exactly. It's more what you do with them and how you choose to highlight the ones that coordinate best with your photos. In this case, I chose more of the blues and yellows with little splashes of green. There is actually more red on my layout than I really wanted, but I couldn't find an adequate alternative in my stash so I just went with it!�

“This is a super fun colour palette to work with. Here in Australia it is the middle of winter, but who doesn’t love those fun colours for photos of your family? I had a wealth of choices of photos to use and the new summer collection from Simple Stories was almost exactly the colours I wanted. But there was one extra colour, a pink, that I wanted to ‘remove.’ ‘How do I remove a colour from a multicolour striped paper?’ My top tip is washi tape! I have a great solid white one and put that on top of the stripe in the unwanted colour. Then I picked a few different ones in colours I wanted and taped them over the solid white one. It worked fantastically at covering the pink with yellow stripes and red polkadots. Then I layered all those yummy diecuts and fabric bits and when it came time to journal I just stamped my own label shapes to have ones in exactly the colours I wanted. I usually only think to stamp in black, but a fun colour challenge reminds me to get out those ink pads and make some cheap, simple, and matching embellishments. I recently bought a few new Hero Arts ink pads from the Scrapbook Generation store and they are so smooth to stamp with, a real delight. So there are a couple of easy and quick tips to get colours you want and to remove the ones you don't want in your layout.”

“Color challenges are always a ‘challenge’ for me personally. I'm the type of person who kind of wings it and throws things together, so putting specific colors together can be a challenge. However, I was excited with how easily all of these came together! I put random strips of washi tape all over the card stock and painted the colors in the triangles that were left. That way, I had every color covered in the event I couldn't find actual supplies to fit. Then, I just started pulling elements that I loved with my photos, and I was lucky that they fit the color challenge! YAY! I love that the color scheme is bright and fun -- perfect for my summer photos.”

Resist papers can open tons of possibilities, but you may not know that they can be a do-ityourself project. Follow a few easy steps, and you will be guaranteeing that your project will transform into a one-ofa-kind creation.

tammy tutterow technique tutorial Resist papers are a lot of fun to create with. Several manufacturers make resist pages in white and kraft that are perfect for adding inks and color sprays to. When combined with inks, they can become a perfectly matched addition to any page, card, art journal, or mixed media project. What you might not realize is that resist papers are really easy to make. By making your own resist papers you are guaranteeing that your project will be as unique as you are!
1 Begin with a heavy-weight smooth cardstock. You will want to select a cardstock that will stand up to inks and mists without warping. Keep in mind that the resist will protect the color of the cardstock so choose a color that you will want to show.

making resist paper Stamp the image onto the cardstock using clear embossing ink. Sprinkle clear embossing powder onto the wet ink. Tap any excess off. I keep my embossing powder in a sandwich size storage container so that I can sprinkle and tap the excess off right back into the container. It makes using the powder and clean up much easier.

You can also add additional stamped images over the embossed design. Because the original image Layer as many colors as you like. If you use is protected with the embossing sprays or mists, use a dry cloth to soak up powder, any new stamped excess color between layers so that the cardstock does not become too saturated. After inking and stamping, use a dry cloth to buff the embossed design. The cloth will remove the stamping and ink from the embossing, leaving a clean embossed design.
