ABOUT US We support student learning through leadership development, and provide diverse recrea on opportuni es that foster community engagement and contribute to the well‐being of students staff and faculty. Our Recrea on services and programs are available to students, staff, faculty, UniverCity residents, families, and the general public. Memberships are included in tui on for most students, and as a benefit for most staff and faculty – see eligibility informa on. Others are invited to purchase a membership, see fee schedule on pg. 5.

DROP-IN PUNCH CARD

The Drop‐in Punch Card provides access to a variety of SFU Rec programs on a drop‐in basis.     

Eligible Drop‐in classes are indicated with a Drop‐in icon. Classes require 1 or 2 punches and must be presented to the instructor at the start of class. Drop‐in is available only if space permits. Registered par cipants get first priority un l the first 5 minutes of class. All cards expire at the end of designated term (noted on card), max. 2 terms. Cards are non‐transferable, non‐refundable and non‐replaceable .

Private swimming lessons are great for all skill levels and ages from preschoolers to adults. We will set you up with an instructor specific for your needs whether you're a beginner looking to learn how to swim, an intermediate swimmer looking to improve your stroke and technique, or a future lifeguard looking to refine your lifesaving skills. FITNESS CENTRE FACILITY INFO Overlooking the Terry Fox Field, the SFU Fitness Centre has something for everyone! Whether you want to enjoy a leisurely ride on a sta onary bike, challenge your core, or build strength, come visit our facility. Equipped with 46 cardio machines, strength training machines, and free weights it is a great place to meet all your fitness goals.

LOCATION The Fitness Centre is located on the bo om floor of the Lorne Davies Complex (Room 088). Access to the Fitness Centre is via the hallway in front of the change rooms.

A current SFU Burnaby A‐R Membership or a Day Pass (available at the A‐R Main Office or the Equipment Desk) is required to use the Fitness Centre. (refer to pg. 5)

CODE OF CONDUCT Be respec ul of staff and patrons, and act with courtesy at all mes.  Enter through the main doors and sign in with your A‐R Membership card. Membership Cards may be requested at any me while in the facility. Anyone not able to produce a card or day pass will be asked to leave the Fitness Centre.  Appropriate exercise a re and footwear are required, including but not limited to:  Clean clothing  Shirts that cover the full torso  No denim or metal fasteners  Footwear that is closed‐toe and does not have cleats or metal buckles  No food or gum in the facility.  Water bo les and other closed beverage containers are permi ed but must remain closed when not in use.  No bags on the Fitness Centre floor. Please use lockers or cubbies provided.  Respect that the Fitness Centre is a fragrance free zone.  Turn the ringer off any cell phones or other communica on devices while in the Fitness Centre. Calls or texts may only be made from cubby areas or outside the Fitness Centre.  Sign up to use cardio machines. Maximum 30 minutes per machine. If you are more than 5 minutes late for your reserva on, other patrons may use the machine.  Use equipment properly and safely. Use safety collars and a spo er. Ask a staff member for assistance if you are unsure about proper use of equipment.  Do not drop or bang weights, or place them on upholstery.  Wipe down equipment with towel and cleaner a er use.  Return all equipment to appropriate storage loca on a er use. Immediately report any injuries, damage to equipment, or other concerns to Fitness Centre staff.

No external / private personal training permi ed. Age Requirements:  Adult supervision (19 yrs +) is required for patrons ages 15 & 16 yrs old.  Patrons under the age of 15 yrs are not permi ed in the Fitness Centre. Please ask a Fitness Centre staff if you need clarifica on on any of the above items.

CARDIO KICKBOX

By popular demand, here is a class to help you through your work week. Slow down your mind for an hour, strengthen and tone your core, and then finish with an invigora ng full body stretch.

Whether you want to work off some steam, or you just want to reap the benefits of this amazing cardio workout, the me will fly by! Be led through jabs, kicks, and roundhouses that will define those leg, shoulder, and abdominal muscles like never before. Finish with charged up core work, and a good stretch.

ATHLETIC INTERVALS A class where resistance training is mixed in with bursts of simple, non‐choreographed cardio moves that are easy to follow. The class is finished off with mat work, abs and a good stretch. Appropriate for all levels.

Belly dancing is a sensual Middle Eastern dance. It involves prac cing movements using parts of the body such as the hips, shoulders and stomach. This class emphasizes using various muscle groups independently. Students will be learning basic moves such as shimmies, figure eights and hip twists. The class ends off with a touch of relaxa on which involves being guided into a stretch and relaxa on (shavasana) in order to wind down before heading off for the rest of your day!

IAIDO

KARATE

Iaido is the art of sword drawing from ancient Japan. The movements are simple to quickly dispatch opponents in si ng and standing situa ons. Beginners start with a wooden sword, and progress to an unsharpened metal sword. Focus is provided to the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei (Seite) and Muso Shinden styles.

This class will explore the principles of movement through the study of kihon waza (moving basics) and kata fluidic graceful movement that can be used in all ac vi es including self defense. It is open to both advanced, novice and beginner students. Overall, Karate will improve your focus, strength and balance while helping you de‐stress and deepen your mar al arts knowledge. TANG SOO DO TAI CHI BEGINNER Discover the art of Tai Chi in its most popular form: 24 Form Simplified Yang Style. In this 3 hour recer fica on clinic, candidates will review: principles of first aid, use of barrier devices and how to call EMS, adult, child and infant CPR skills and AED use, 2 rescuer CPR and AED procedures, adult, child and infant conscious and unconscious choking procedures, circulatory emergencies to include recogni on and treatment of a heart a ack, angina, stroke and TIA. AED is included in the course.

At the end of this course, candidates will be able to teach and evaluate CPR Level A, B, C and CPR‐HCP, Emergency and Standard First Aid, AED Responder and AED Provider, Oxygen Therapy, AEC.

STANDARD FIRST AID (SFA) This 16 hour course will provide training in life threatening priori es such as breathing, bleeding, shock, poisons, as well as secondary injuries such as those to head, spine, bones, joints and injuries due to heat and cold. SCUBA PADI CERTIFICATION This performance‐based program will guide you through the basics of diving with knowledge development, pool dives, and 4 ocean dives. SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES INTRAMURALS SFU Intramurals offers the opportunity to play organized sports on campus. Rec sport staff supervise, schedule, and administer a wide variety of Compe ve and Recrea onal Leagues:

COMPETITIVE LEAGUES: A team fee is required to organize these exci ng leagues, which include added benefits:  Paid officials (except Volleyball)  Addi onal league managers  Supplied equipment  Detailed weekly standings  Scheduled playoff format for qualifying teams *Leagues winners also earn Intramural Championship T‐Shirts!

RECREATIONAL LEAGUES: Recrea onal leagues are free to join and play is more relaxed. Weekly games are scheduled and supervised by the Rec sport staff.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN LEAGUES? Intramurals are available to anyone with a valid SFU Burnaby A‐R Membership (Day Passes are not accepted in Intramural Leagues). Typically beginners choose to par cipate in the rec leagues first before joining the more experienced players in the compe ve leagues.

HOW TO REGISTER Register at the Intramurals Office in the Lorne Davies Complex Room 121 (beside the East Gym), during the second week of classes (the week of Sep 9‐13). Come on the DAY and TIME of the league you want to join.

Registra on is on a first‐come, first‐serve basis. Team fees (if applicable) are needed to confirm registra on. Late registra on is only accepted if the league is not full. REGISTER A FULL TEAM:  Bring your friends and sign‐up as a team! (If needed, you can pick‐up extra players from individual teams or the free agent list).  The minimum number of players required to play the sport at registra on are 5‐7 players.

REGISTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL:  Compe ve Leagues: Join the free agent list on the specific league registra on day.  Recrea onal Leagues: Join one of our individual teams that are created on the specific league registra on day.

This 13 week program (23 sessions) is aimed at those who want to learn and/or improve their running skills, and prep for the Sun Run on April 27, 2014. The philosophy of judo emphasizes the need to 'take care of one's partner' and this is an integral part of our judo program. 'Mutual benefit' and 'respect for each other' form the philosophical founda on of this sport. These quali es make judo not only a good sport, but is great educa onal training for life.
