Spider bite hospitalizes Navajo VP WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The vice president of the Navajo Nation is recovering after being bit by a brown recluse spider. Rex Lee Jim had been hospitalized for more than four weeks in Albuquerque. Jim says the spider’s venom spread like wildfire through his lower left leg. He says doctors were able to surgically remove the infection, dead tissue, ligaments and muscles, avoiding leg amputation. Jim says the hospital stay also revealed that he has diabetes. He encouraged Navajos to eat healthy, exercise and get annual checkups. Tribal spokesman Rick Abasta says Jim is recovering with rest and physical therapy. The Associated Press

Angie Saavedra Lopez, a longtime Santa Fe resident, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 28, at Christus St. Vincent Hospital. Angie was the driving force of her family, a rock-solid matriarch exuding strength, compassion and an incredible zest for life. She was an unbelievable mother and best friend to her four children, developing different but equally meaningful bonds with each of them. Blessed with a wealth of generosity, empathy and sense of humor, Angie touched everyone in her life. She was an exemplary wife, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, friend and an especially doting grandmother. She was the shining star who brightened everything and everyone in her path. Angie was born in Albuquerque and raised in the New Mexico communities of Tokay, San Pedro and Socorro. A devout Roman Catholic, she was active with the church and in the community, and made her family especially proud in the mid-1960s when she was honored as the top fund-raiser for the March of Dimes. Her absolute passion was gardening, especially tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, was an avid horse racing fan and supported her grandchildren in various sporting activities. Angie is survived by her son Walter K. Lopez (Santa Fe); daughter Linda DeBruyn, her husband Ed, son Eddie and daughter KK (Santa Fe); son Pat Lopez, his wife Mari, son Bosco (Santa Fe) and daughter DeAnza (Los Angeles); son Mark Lopez, his wife Catherine, daughters Ariana and Nina and son Dean (Albuquerque); her sister Sarah Vigil (Las Cruces); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Salomon, parents Onesimo and Dominica Saavedra; brother Pete Saavedra and sisters Alva Gonzales, Beatrice Romero and Rosa Peralta. Angie possessed an extraordinary presence and was just as beautiful in death as she was in life. And although she has entered into Our Lord’s heavenly kingdom, her passing has created an irreplaceable void in our lives and she will be dearly missed. A rosary to celebrate Angie’s life will be recited at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, at Berardinelli Mortuary, 1399 Luisa Street, Santa Fe, N.M., (505) 984-8600. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, October 2, 9 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1301 Osage Avenue, (505) 983-5034. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Angie’s grandchildren DeAnza Paredes, Eddie DeBruyn, KK DeBruyn, Ariana Lopez, Dean Lopez, Bosco Lopez and Nina Lopez.
FRANK A. DEMOLLI Frank A. Demolli 83, passed peacefully on Saturday September 20, 2014 due to a massive stroke. He was born in Rockford, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, Angelina and Frank Demolli. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Joan, his children Frank (Naomi), Joe, Patricia Anderson (Dana), Susan Hamel (Bill), Duane (Jan), Carol Barbarow (Dan), Dan (Mary), Dawn Fowler (Russ) and 12 grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends in the Rockford area. He spent 27 years in the Air Force and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. He received his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University in Pueblo, Colorado. He was active in the Boy Scouts, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the Volksport Walking Club. He never missed watching his favorite football team, the Broncos. He also enjoyed playing and teaching board games and cards to his children and grandchildren. During and after his years in the military, he and his family lived in many states and overseas, retiring in Albuquerque, NM. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Paulette V. Cummins, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at her Santa Fe home following an extended illness. Born January 22, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Pauline McSweeny. She and her husband Thomas Cummins came to Santa Fe to make their home fifteen years ago. Her life was not short and sweet for which we are thankful. Along the way she married Donald Luchessa and gave birth to Michael, Karen, Bruce, and Scott. She mastered many art forms and transformed her pain and suffering into beauty. Although a native Californian at heart, she chose to live in the high desert of Santa Fe and it was here that she passed on September 17, 2014. She will be missed by her children, their spouses and offspring as well as many relatives, friends and fellow artists. It seems fitting that the first rains of autumn are falling from the heavens like tears to refresh our souls. A celebration of her life is in the works.
Roberto R. Trujillo, born February 8, 1956, passed away on September 23, 2014. He is preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Rodriguez, grandparents, Patrocinio and Encarnacion Rodriguez, sister, Angela Mejia and dear cousin, Kenneth Cruz. He is survived by his brother, Victor (Sylvia Rodriguez), nephews and nieces: Phillipe (Serena) Rodriguez, Renee (Steve) Gallegos, Mariquita (Andrew) Baca, Lisa (Sean) Espinosa, Ana, Patricio, Pilar, Juanita, and Maria Mejia, great nephews and nieces, as well as many loving, caring uncles, aunts, family and friends. Robert proudly served in the Marine Corps and the Air National Guard. We will always remember Robert for his loving heart, free spirit and sense of humor.
