The 52-year-old singer later talked to CNN about her decision, which was prompted by the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and the high court’s dismissal of Proposition 8, the referendum banning gay

marriage in California. To top off the celebration, Etheridge said California is exactly the place where they’ll get married. “I’m going to get married in the state of California. I woke [the kids] up this morning telling them the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA. I love everybody out there. It’s a great day,” she said.

Democrats Looking to Repeal Rest of DOMA section 2 of DOMA, which would allow the government to recognize a legal gay marriage even in a state where gay marriage is not allowed. Feinstein said that even after the Windsor case, there still remain inconsistencies with the law. “Veterans benefits are based on the law of the state where the parties resided at the time of the

marriage, or when the right to benefits accrued. So, different veterans benefits might be granted or denied, depending on where a couple lived at different times, without any rhyme or reason,” she said in a statement on June 26. The bill has 161 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives and 41 co-sponsors in the Senate.

The LGBT community adds another line of visibility: Eric Fanning has recently become the acting secretary of the Air Force, making him the highest-ranking gay person in the Department of Defense. Fanning is currently acting both as under secretary (his previous role) and secretary given the retirement of Michael Donley from the post and the fact that President Obama is yet to nominate someone to replace him, according to BuzzFeed. Before his current job, he had been deputy undersecretary and deputy chief management officer for the Navy since 2009. Fanning is also a former board member of LGBT rights PAC Victory Fund. Fanning has previously worked for the government in the 1990s, in the House Armed Services Committee, then for the Defense Department and the Clinton White House. Even as a civilian employee, he said that working in an environment where “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was in place proved challenging. “It was very difficult when we were getting

to the end of the first two years [of the Clinton administration] and it wasn’t clear if we were going to be able to repeal [DADT],” he told the Washington Blade. While DADT has been repealed, he said he would like to see openly transgender people be able to serve. “I think everyone who serves in uniform should have full access to legal benefits, and so DOMA is the main roadblock to that,” Fanning said, making reference to the Defense of Marriage Act.

+Gay Designer Narciso Rodriguez Marries Partner in NYC Out fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez has tied the knot to longtime boyfriend Thomas Tolan, People magazine reports. The wedding took place on June 22 at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City. High profile friends and clients like actress Jessica Alba and Jessica Seinfeld were in attendance.

“Tom makes Sunday gravy, meatballs and the whole deal. He’s a good cook, too. So we’ll cook together, open a bottle of red wine, and if it’s nice, we’ll sit on the terrace and watch the sunset,” Rodriguez told the New York Times about his new husband in 2011. According to People, Rodriguez is

Plea Deal Rejected in Fake Trans Doctor Case

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer rejected a plea deal as “too light” for Ron Oneal Morris, the trans fake doctor accused of killing two patients with hazardous cosmetic fillers. On June 25, Judge Venzer nixed a plea deal that would have sent Morris to 180 days in jail. Morris injected Fix-a-Flat, Super Glue and mineral oil into women’s bodies for cosmetic purposes, causing the death of Shatarka Nuby, one of the victims who went to the police after receiving injections filled with a concoction of products bought at Home Depot. “I don’t think it’s appropriate, not for the charges, not for second-degree felonies. These charges carry 30 years,” Venzer told The Miami Herald. Morris operated her illegal business in both Miami-Dade and Broward County. In Broward, she faces a manslaughter count in connection with Nuby’s death. According to SFGN trans columnist Victoria Michaels, Morris gained popularity among members of the transgender community eager to transition, but who did not have the funds to seek treatment at a certified clinic. “This is an overwhelming problem that plagues our transgender community as there just aren’t any LGBT organizations willing to assist transgenders in their desperate need to transition,” Michaels wrote in a 2012 column.

A team of doctors at the University of Pennsylvania are giving the deadline HIV virus new meaning: they are using it to save lives. The researchers, led by Carl H. June, say they have been successful in genetically engineering HIV to target cancer cells, as reported by HIVPlus Mag. The treatment being developed by these doctors injects patients’ T cells with the modified form of HIV, disabling some parts of it some that it can’t cause AIDS, but still using it to attack cancerous cells in the body. They claim that one such HIV cell can kill up to 1,000 cancerous cells. Patients like 7-year-old Emma Whitehead, a girl from Pennsylvania who was fighting leukemia, were “infected” with the reprogrammed HIV virus. Months later her leukemia disappeared, doctors say. A total of 12 patients have been subjected to the treatment; nine of them are in full or partial remission, June said. The team now wants to see how their treatment can fight other types of cancer, like pancreatic cancer. “We want to cure cancer, we do,” June said. “I think sometimes it’s hard to think that you might actually succeed.”

The Top 5 LGBT Court Cases Before DOMA and Prop 8 there were these cases… By Lisa Keen

Keen News Service The two high-profile opinions pending release this month from the U.S. Supreme Court could end up being as historic as the Loving v. Virginia decision, which struck down laws against marriage for interracial couples in 1967. They could be as dramatic as Roe v. Wade, which struck down most restrictions against abortion in 1973. And, they’re already getting as much attention now, if not more, than pending decisions on the Voting Rights Act and affirmative action. If the Supreme Court makes definitive rulings in U.S. v. Windsor (regarding the Defense of Marriage Act) and Hollingsworth v. Perry (regarding California’s Proposition 8), the opinions will certainly warrant inclusion on any Top Ten LGBT Cases list, maybe even among the Top Five. Here are the cases that would make most LGBT legal activists’ Top Five LGBT Supreme Court opinions list today:

Lawrence v. Texas Year: 2003 Vote: 6 to 3

Ruling: A Texas law making it a crime for two adults of the same sex to have consensual sexual relations in private violates the Due Process Clause. Impact: The ruling not only struck down the Texas law but those in eight other states. It also put a stop to the use of various other entities –employers, the military, family courts, and others—from using the existence of the laws to justify various other forms of discrimination against LGBT people. Many believe it is the decision that most paved the way for the success of much later litigation, including on marriage, to assert equal protection rights for LGBT people.

Bowers v. Hardwick Year: 1986 Vote: 5 to 4

Ruling: A Georgia law making it a crime for two adults of the same sex to have consensual sexual relations in private was constitutionally permissible. Impact: Politically and legally, Hardwick

lashed out against an LGBT community that was growing dramatically, in part due to legal gains and in part due to a need to address the devastating effects of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic. It was cited by hundreds of later decisions in courts across the nation to justify all various restrictions on the rights of LGBT people.

Romer v. Evans

delivery of a gay and lesbian newsletter, which a Los Angeles postmaster had deemed pornographic. Impact: This marked the first time the high court protected the rights of LGBT people specifically, and it did so in the context of harassment that began during the McCarthy Era of witch hunts against communists and homosexuals. By upholding the rights of gays and lesbians to express themselves politically and poetically, and to share those expressions among themselves through the mail, the court left open the important means of communication that the LGBT political

and cultural movements needed to exist and grow.

Hurley v. GLIB Year: 1995 Vote: 9 to 0

Ruling: The First Amendment right to freedom of association trumped a state law prohibiting discrimination on account of sexual orientation in places of public accommodation. Impact: This ruling not only weakened the ability of states to prohibit discrimination, it was the beginning of a trend in which people who did not like gays argued that the First Amendment gave them a right to express their disapproval in public contexts. In short order, numerous cases emerged, including Boy Scouts v. Dale (in 2000). Even today, the argument is raised, most recently in Christian Legal v. Martinez, testing the right of school officials to require student campus groups to treat all students equally.

Year: 1996 Vote: 6 to 3

Ruling: The voter-approved Amendment 2 to the Colorado constitution seeking to block any state or local jurisdictions from prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation violated the Equal Protection clause of the U.S. Constitution. Impact: It overturned Colorado’s hostile law and put the brakes on a devastating trend of other states passing or attempting to pass similar initiatives. It also put governments on notice that they could not pass laws that disfavored LGBT people simply because a majority of voters dislike LGBT people.

In San Francisco, where marriage equality began nearly a decade ago, LGBT San Franciscans were joined by many straight allies for a lively street party on Castro Street, the city’s self-described “gayborhood.” In 2004, then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom opened the marriage equality floodgates when he took the law into his own hands and began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This led to the California

State legislature legalizing gay marriage a few years later, until Proposition 8, a voter-approved ban on same sex marriage, became law in 2008. A federal district court and then an appeals court have since ruled prop 8 unconstitutional. On June 26, the Supreme Court declined to rule on the constitutionality of Prop 8, meaning that the lower court ruling stands. Same sex marriages will resume in California sometime in July. DOMA — the Defense of Marriage Act — to be unconstitutional. The mood at the Castro Street celebration was jubilant. As music blared, gay men and lesbians danced together and embraced one another. LGBT seniors, many of whom didn’t think they would live to see this day, wept openly. LGBT parents partied with their children. Victor H. Floyd, pastor of San Francisco’s Metropolitan Community Church, informed SFGN that MCC has been performing same sex weddings for forty-five years. “Today same sex marriages have come one step closer to normal,” Rev. Floyd told SFGN. “And to paraphrase Harvey Milk, ‘if gay people can make it, anyone can make it.’” In 1978, Milk, then a member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, was murdered at City Hall. He was the first openly gay man in U.S. history to hold a major elective office. Stuart Milk, the late Supervisor’s openly gay nephew, was present at the San Francisco party. The younger Milk, who has a home in South Florida, had a message for equality advocates in Florida. “Right now people in Florida are celebrating even though this ruling does not impact them,” Milk said. “But this is hope. You can feel it and taste it. Florida now has that hope.” In a famous speech made during the 1970s, Harvey Milk stated “You gotta give them hope.” For other attendees, the joy was tempered with a reflective sorrow. gay man, carried a sign, which proclaimed “For all my fallen brothers who didn’t live to see this historic day, I remember you tonight with love.” The other side of Santana’s sign listed the names of his late lovers and friends, many of whom were lost to AIDS. Dancing in the street was the primaryorder of the day. As gay anthems from iconic artists such as Sylvester and Donna Summer blasted out of loudspeakers, thousands of people partied as they hadn’t partied in years. There were a few speakers. Openly gay Scott Wiener, who currently occupies Harvey Milk’s old Board of Supervisor’s seat, referred to the “Queer caucus” at San Francisco City Hall. Wiener is one of several openly gay elected officials in the city. Cleve Jones, a personal friend of Harvey Milk, called upon revelers to pay tribute to South African President Nelson Mandela, who’s in the hospital fighting for his life. “South Africa is currently the only nation on earth that recognizes LGBT people in its constitution,” Jones stated, as the crowd erupted into applause. But the fight isn’t over, some were quick to point out. Many states still have constitutional bans on same sex marriage, which need to be overturned. “We have much work to do,” said Rabbi Camille Angel, a lesbian spiritual leader at San Francisco’s Congregation Shaare Zahav, an LGBT temple. “I’m very proud to be part of the Jewish people. 80 percent of Jewish voters voted for marriage equality.”

Meningitis Town Hall Draws Big Crowd Healthcare professionals educate public on recent meningitis outbreak Christiana Lilly

It was a day of marriage and meningitis. Floating on a high from the Supreme Court’s decisions on DOMA and Prop 8 Wednesday morning, a crowd entered the Pride Center in Wilton Manors to get serious and learn about the meningitis outbreak that has infected gay men in New York City and Los Angeles. Representatives from the Broward County Health Department, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene -- via phone -- participated in the panel to explain the basics of bacterial meningitis, the outbreak in the Big Apple, and details on the vaccination. “I’m not a doctor, are any of you a doctor?” Kristofer Fegenbush, COO of the Pride Center, asked the crowd. With no hands raised, he explained that the panel was here to answer any questions

for everyone to educate themselves on the disease. Dr. Marah Lee explained that bacterial meningitis causes an inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms kick in within 48 hours and the disease is deadly without treatment. However, the difficulty lies in that many of the symptoms -- headaches, extreme fatigue, sore neck -- are similar to the flu. “You can be dead in two days,” she said. “Don’t wait like you do the flu. It won’t go away.” The disease is passed through saliva, so one can get the disease from sharing drinks, cigarettes, and French kissing. Since 2010, 22 gay or bisexual men have contracted the illness in New York City and seven have died. There is no reason for it to cluster among one population, which is what had officials concerned, said Molly

To combat the problem, New York City is offering free meningitis vaccines to those who feel they are at risk. In fact, one doctor, Demetre Daskalaki, has taken to sex clubs in the city to give out free vaccines. When a New York Times article covered him in May, the number of men getting the vaccine skyrocketed. Today, more than 14,000 people have voluntarily gotten the vaccine, although Kratz thinks the number may be even higher. There have been no new cases since February 2013. A smaller outbreak of three men in Los Angeles spread worry, as many people in South Florida travel to California and New York. AIDS Healthcare Foundation offers free vaccinations in LA. However, so far the coast is clear in South Florida, but the program will offer the shots should someone become infected, said Jason King of AHF. “Today, we haven’t identified one single case in the MSM population in Broward,” said Patrick Jenkins, the epidemiology program manager at the Broward County Health Department. Wesley Schultz attended the town hall to learn more about the outbreak and so he can help educate his neighbors and community.

“It was well organized. I liked the fact that somebody was on the telephone giving a direct conversation,” he said, although he added he wished there was more diversity in the groups on the panel. Walter Dickey also attended the meeting and was happy with the results. “I feel like I’m a little better informed about it,” he said. “It doesn’t look like to me it’s a big concern in this area. But if it was, i certainly would [get the vaccine].” The vaccine varies from location to location, but on average costs $150 per dose. For those who are HIV positive, officials recommend that patients get two vaccines eight weeks apart. In New York City, proof of residency is not required to get the vaccine, said Dr. Mark Misener of the New York City health department. LifeWay, Inc. at 5353 N. Federal Highway Suite 301 will be hosting a vaccine day on June 29 starting at noon. Those who are interested in getting the vaccine should call 954-772-8554 so staff can make sure there are enough ordered. Vaccines are also available at the Broward County Health Department and AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Again, call ahead of time so staff can order a vaccine. The manufacturer of the vaccine has a patient assistance program to help pay for the doses for those who qualify.

Dozens of HIV/AIDS agencies from around the world will be converging in South Florida for the very first time for the annual Dining Out For Life Conference. Hosted by our very own Broward House (browardhouse.org), the conference is being held at the Embassy Suites in sunny Fort Lauderdale from July 10 to 12. Sixty-

seven agencies from around the world will be sending up to 150 service professionals to attend seminars every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the hotel. There, they will be participating in sessions with pharmaceutical agencies, social marketing and social media experts, receive tips on how to publicize the work their agencies do, and plan their next

Dining Out For Life event. “It’s a major, major undertaking of everybody coming together and exchange of ideas and what works and what doesn’t work,” said Terry DeCarlo, director of marketing, public relations and events. “It’s just a great way for agencies to talk to each other and find out what other agencies are doing and getting ideas.” Dining Out For Life (diningoutforlife.com) is an annual, one-night event where area restaurants open their doors to raise money for their local HIV/AIDS agency. Cities in the U.S. and Canada participate, some raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. Broward House took over handling the event in the Fort Lauderdale area last year, with 11 restaurants donating anywhere from 25 to 100 percent of their profits to the agency. The restaurants helped raise $12,500 and seven have already promised to take part in next year’s Dining Out For Life, the third Thursday in April. During the conference, guests can discuss and learn how to promote their event to raise money for their agency to combat HIV/AIDS. “I get to meet people who do the same thing that I do every single day. We sit down and we find out what works for them, what doesn’t work for them, trials, tribulations,” DeCarlo said.

This is his fifth year attending the conference. Last year, the conference was hosted in Nashville by Nashville Cares Not only is it a chance for HIV/AIDS agencies to get together to share ideas, but it’s also an opportunity for Fort Lauderdale to strut its stuff. Broward House put together a welcome package for guests, including a list of restaurants, bars, and activities to check out in the area. Macy’s is supplying welcome bags and pharmaceutical companies pitched in to pay for dinners. “Everybody is just gearing up and getting ready to welcome these people to the town. It’s a way to show off our town to these people,” DeCarlo said. While DeCarlo has heard that guests are looking forward to coming down to Florida, land of sun, surf and tourists, it also is fitting because South Florida is unfortunately home to the largest number of new HIV cases in the country. “We are still a hotbed of activity for HIV/ AIDS,” DeCarlo said. “To have this … major HIV/AIDS conference right here in Fort Lauderdale, put the focus right here, does help us.” Dining Out For Life is April 17, 2014. Next Tuesday will mark one year since former WPTV-Channel 5 weatherman Rob Lopicola, aka Inmate No. 0435541 at the Palm Beach County main jail, was arrested and charged with having sex with underage boys. It’s likely that, should the former TVpersonality-turned-go-go-dancer be convicted, the months spent in jail would be credited. Thing is, he still has close to five more months to wait, since his trial was scheduled for Oct. 21. According to jail logs obtained by Gossip Extra, meanwhile, Lopicola has only been visited by a handful of family members and friends and, at best, receives one visit a month. Among the visitors was Kravis Center Production Manager Coreen Gottschalk, who visited him three times in February and March. She declined to discuss her visits in detail. “I have known Rob for 20 years,” Gottschalk wrote in an e-mail, “his family is devastated, the last thing they need is to be exploited.”

Untenable. Unimaginable. Unconscionable. Unacceptable. Pride South Florida’s behavior has crossed the line Two weeks ago, SFGN censured Marc Hansen, the director of Pride South Florida, for refusing to release the notices sent to the group by the IRS, following its apparent failure in a tax audit. Last week, the Pride South Florida board had an opportunity to rectify this colossal mistake by overruling the ignorant act of Mr. Hansen. But the supplicant and compliant board rolled over and did nothing, denying you the right to see why Pride South Florida is under an IRS inquiry. This week, SFGN has made its own public records request to the IRS. We have also gone to circuit court to sue them, asking for a declaratory judgment that their withholding of these records last week was a patently illegal act. One of the things you learn as a lawyer is not to ask a question you don’t know the answer to. When SFGN asked Mr. Hansen for the tax notice, we knew we had a right to it. So do you. Anyone in the public does. If you doubt it, just download IRS Form

4506-A. Here is what it reads, and what Pride South Florida board members ignored: “Public disclosure by a tax exempt organization: Exempt or political organizations must make their returns, reports, notices, and exempt applications available for public inspection.” The regulations provide that if you visit the organization they must be given to you on the spot if they are open for business. At the last board meeting, John Fugate, an Advisory Board member of PSF, asked for the notice. He well should have. As an advisory board member, he has a fiduciary obligation to the community and the association to insure that none of its tax filings are deficient, that no audits have been failed, and that no more directors are stealing thousands of your dollars. He was denied access as well. Marc Hansen arbitrarily refused him the copies. It may be one thing to deny an outsider access to records you deem private, but it’s

quite another to deny those same records to a legitimate board member. The board failed to overrule him. Not one person spoke up for John’s right to inspect those records. This kind of intransigent and defiant behavior from one of the community’s largest non-profits is untenable and unimaginable, unconscionable and unacceptable. This newspaper now calls upon our community leaders and non-profit representatives to demand disclosure and transparency from Pride South Florida, before the orders come from a circuit court judge. Come they will. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the late United States Senator from New York, once stated, “that if you visit a country and all you see in their paper is good news, there are a lot of good people in jail in that country.” SFGN is filing a declaratory judgment action in the circuit court seeking a judicial ruling that the refusal by Pride South Florida

to turn its public records over to us upon our lawful request was an illegal act by them against YOU. Today is the 21st day of their ignorance, and no way to celebrate the 4th of July. The 4th celebrates the independence of a country founded upon a free press. It’s one of those amendments we honor this week. Sunlight is a great disinfectant. If Pride South Florida had intelligent leadership, prudent guidance, and nothing to be ashamed of, and we would have had these tax notices – which may yet prove to be minor – without judicial review. Instead, the board shames and embarrasses the gay community. Pride South Florida is not the National Security Agency and their records should never have been classified as ‘Top Secret.’ The people seeking to unmask their coverups are not spies. They are reporters doing their duty, exposing fraud and incompetence where they find it.

Reader Defends Gail Burnaford Against ‘Unfounded’ Accusations Dear SFGN, As a reader of your paper, a supporter of the LGBTQ community, and an advocate for the rights of all people, I must take issue with your article on the so-called firing of Professor Robb Kvasnak, because he is gay [Unequal Opportunity: FAU professor claims getting booted for being gay, June 27, 2013, Vol. 4, Issue 26]. While I do not know Mr. Kvasnak or his work, I do know Dr. Gail Burnaford. It is simply bad reporting to even suggest that

Mr. Kvasnak’s firing was because of Dr. Burnaford’s “homophobia” or “faith.” I came to know Dr. Burnaford almost seven years ago when she joined the Coral Gables United Church of Christ, of which I am the senior pastor. We are a congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC), a denomination that ordained the first openly-gay pastor in 1972. The UCC has been and continues to be a constant advocate for the rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation. In 2005, we were the first mainline denomination to support gay marriage. Coral Gables United Church of Christ is a beacon of light for those seeking a faith home in the Miami area who have been excluded from other churches because of their sexual orientation. As a church, we have taken strong and bold stands in the belief that all people, regardless of where they are on life’s journey or with whom they walk that journey, are loved by God just as they are, and should be welcomed and affirmed in the life of the church. We witness to these things by participating in every single Pride Parade in Miami. We perform Holy Unions and bless weddings of same-gendered couples. We constantly

promote and provide programs, Bible studies, and other gatherings which articulate our message of acceptance and welcome and differentiate us from those who use the Bible and their faith as a weapon against the LGBTQ community. Dr. Burnaford made a commitment to join this particular church because of our stand on justice, peace, openness, and welcome to all. She travels well over two hours each Sunday from her home in Boca Raton, passing hundreds of churches to attend and participate in a faith community which is open and affirming to all. Your facts are also not correct in suggesting that she is a protestant minister. This is simply not true. She did graduate with an MA from Lancaster Theological Seminary, a seminary of the United Church of Christ, which offers courses including Queer Theology, Liberation Theology, and Feminist Theology. It is one of the most progressive, open-minded, and theologically liberal seminaries in the nation. I grieve with the statistics that the article presented about our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters who have lost their jobs based on their sexual orientation. I am appalled that there is not better protection for those who

are discriminated against, simply because of who they are. I am sad about these facts that present the economic disparity that exists. I can assure you that, if indeed discrimination had taken place in this situation, Dr. Burnaford would have been the first to fight against such an injustice. And, I would be right behind her, as would the members of our congregation. Please do not attempt to take down good people who are advocates for the very positions that you stand for as a paper. Let’s work together to eliminate discrimination and injustice, but not on the back of misinformation and that which is untrue. The Rev. Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 43

(June 21 to June 27) The last year of my life has been an incredibly successful and fun one, overall. Granted the last month has been a troublesome one to say the least, but I’ve tried real hard not to get down on myself or give up. Three people have told me to pack things up and head back to Florida. I thought about it actually, but deep down I told myself to prove people wrong and to make things here in Atlanta work. I missed my doctor’s appointment I was supposed to have on June 24. I couldn’t find a ride, rather I had one that didn’t show up, and I ended up having to walk. I could have taken the train or the bus but I still haven’t landed any solid work, which has left me very broke. I arrived to the hospital about 90 minutes after I was supposed to be seen.

I was told that I would have to reschedule or wait around all day for the chance to go through my intake. I left and told them I’d call to reschedule when I had a better grasp on my situation. The reassuring look from the receptionist did help me feel a little better. The only thing that really makes me feel better is that I have a two-month supply of my medicine. I do have an upcoming appointment to go sit down and talk with a mental health worker. I just want to make sure I’m doing well inside my head. I may think I’m doing fine, but my mind could be playing tricks on me. After living with HIV for nearly five years, I know the importance of a sound body and mind. I’ve been able to find somewhat of a stable living condition even if it is staying on a couch for a week at a time. That has eased my mind so much. You’d be surprised how amazing an uncomfortable and springy couch sounds to me. Most of my time during the day is spent at Piedmont Park or at the library. I’ve done a lot of reading, mostly about the history and culture of Atlanta and Georgia. I think I’ve found the true meaning of “Southern hospitality” in the homes of complete strangers. I turn 26 on July 4. I’ll be spending another birthday alone and this time in a city where I feel abandoned. Maybe this year I’ll answer the phone when my mother calls.

In May 2008 the Advocate published a special “Green” issue (#1007) which featured the nation’s top LGBT environmental “movers and shakers.” One of them was Dustin Cranor, just 25 but already communications manager for the environmental group Oceana. Five years later, Cranor continues the fight for the world’s oceans and the creatures that live there, only with a more imposing title. On May 22 Cranor was promoted to Communications Director for U.S. Campaigns at Oceana. Cranor responsibilities include “spearheading the public messaging for Oceana’s North American campaigns focused on seafood fraud, climate and energy and responsible fishing, which includes efforts to protect sharks, sea turtles and corals.” “I was born and raised on a small pig farm in Southeast Kansas,” Cranor said. “and while I have always cared about the well-being of animals, it was my love for public relations that brought me to Oceana in July 2007. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, I moved to Washington, D.C. where I worked my way up at TheWadeGroup, Inc., a small boutique PR firm. Oceana happened to be one of our clients and the organization quickly asked me to come on full-time” as communications manager. Cranor admits that “when I first moved to Washington, I was hesitant about being openly gay. However, I quickly found out that my employers were much more interested in my skill-set than my sexual orientation. While it may sound corny, I’ve always wanted to make the world a better place. But I don’t think it’s because I’m gay. It’s just who I am.” What is Oceana? According to Cranor, “Oceana is the largest international advocacy group working solely to protect the world’s oceans. Oceana wins policy victories for the oceans using science-based campaigns. Since 2001, Oceana has protected more than 1.2 million square miles of ocean and innumerable sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and other sea creatures. More than 550,000 supporters have already joined Oceana. Global in scope, Oceana has offices in North, South and Central America and Europe.” Before Oceana, less than one-half of one percent of all resources spent by environmental nonprofit groups in the United States went to ocean advocacy. Oceana, later joined by the Ocean Law

Project and the American Oceans Campaign, deals with the problem that threatens our living oceans. And what is that problem? Cranor puts it in a nutshell: “We are simply taking too many fish out of the water, while putting too many pollutants in.” What is Oceana doing about it? “Oceana is currently working on a campaign to Stop Seafood Fraud for when you get a different fish than the one you paid for, which can hurt our wallets, our health and our oceans. Oceana is also working to stop seismic airgun testing, which is currently being proposed along the East Coast to look for oil and gas deposits deep below the ocean floor. The government’s own estimates show that as many as 138,000 whales and dolphins would be injured from this testing, which the sound alone is 100,000 times more intense than a jet engine,” Cranor said. Just in the past year, Oceana helped stop offshore drilling in Belize, advanced protections for great white whales in California, banned wild sea trout fishing in the Baltic Sea’s Gulf of Finland and got the European Union to ban shark finning and curb overfishing. As Oceana’s Communications Director, Cranor “oversees all communications efforts for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns. This includes everything from developing and executing strategic communications plans to securing stories about our campaigns in media outlets around the globe.” Cranor organizes events that involve celebrities like Kate Walsh and Ted Danson and draw media attention for Oceana. He has worked with the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C., now sadly in need of a new home. “Oceana has had a long partnership with National Aquarium. We believe that the Aquarium plays an important role in helping to educate the public about our oceans and their inhabitants, including the threats they face and what can be done to help protect them.” One of Cranor’s most popular projects is managing Oceana’s partnership with the Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week. “Shark Week provides the perfect opportunity for viewers to get involved in shark conservation. Since our partnership with Shark Week began, we have seen dedicated programing focused on shark science and conservation,” he said. “As top soflagaynews //

predators, sharks are needed to maintain healthy oceans for future generations. Unfortunately, human activities, including shark finning, are driving shark populations to dangerously low levels.” Shark Week returns to the Discovery Channel on Sunday, August 4. In 2010, Dustin Cranor moved to Fort Lauderdale, where he works to increase Oceana’s presence in this region. “Living in South Florida has made me appreciate my job even more,” Cranor said. “I am very lucky to enjoy the same ocean that I work daily to protect. Not when the 911 Carrera has grown so cushy as to compete with plus-sized Maseratis and monster-motored Mercedes. In the Carrera’s wake, the Boxster has evolved in turn, rising in style and capability into the sweet spot formerly dominated by the 911. Telepathic steering, pan-flat handling, and right-now thrust from the deliciously rotary engine (which is mounted right behind your head!) have always been Boxster calling cards, but all of which have been taken to the next level in this year’s all-new, third-generation model. The new Boxster looks terrific, too. Stretching the wheelbase imparted it with elegant, supercar-like proportions, while the headlamps and tail lamps are now more uniquely Boxster rather than Carrera knock-offs. Like the 911, the interior is more luxurious this year, yet no one will mistake it for a Bentley. My favorite color combo is the one I tested recently: a classic silver exterior with rose red top and matching interior. But seriously, you can’t go wrong no matter what hue you choose. Now, while the Boxster is hardly cheap, the $25K—$30K you’ll save by not buying a comparably equipped Carrera Convertible can go quite a ways toward packing its two trunks (one in front, one in back) with Italian shoes, gourmet jeans, and fancy things in little blue boxes. Or a Jeep. The one to get: 2013 Porsche Boxster S with 20-inch Carrera S wheels

Best Luxury Car — Audi A7/S7/RS7

The Audi A7 is essentially an A6 sedan rendered as a 5-door hatchback. A hatchback?!? Why would we choose a hatchback as the best luxury car for gays? Because it’s drop-dead gorgeous, that’s why. Seriously, while the A6 sedan is nice, when parked next to an A7, the A6 may as well be a pair of sensible shoes next to Louboutin pumps. The A7’s swoopy, unconventional profile and ducktail tush are simply riveting in the metal. The A7 also wears a more angular front fascia, complete with skinny ropes of sexy LED lights in the headlamps that Audi has become known for. And we do love our pretty shiny things. The interior is similarly special. Rendered in premium materials and assembled with the loving craftsmanship with which Audi has set the industry standard for decades, the A7 is easily as luxurious as anything under $100K. Four-place seating makes the A7’s cabin a particularly exclusive place to be (a rear bench is optional, but not preferable), though the sloping roof translates into tight headroom. Compensating somewhat, however, is the generous cargo area, accessed by that surprisingly sexy rear hatch. Among the A7’s musthave features is a matte-finished layered oak inlaid wood treatment that must be seen to be believed. Three powerful engines are available, all of which come standard with all-wheel drive. You can’t go wrong with any, as even the base supercharged V-6 boasts more than enough power. The turbocharged V-8s in the S7 and RS7 take performance from decadent to overkill, at least for U.S. roads, though the cars themselves don’t look much different than the base A7. So my advice is to stick with the six and spring for some sweet aftermarket wheels, and maybe a few options, like, say, a B&O sound system or full-LED headlamps. The one to get: 2013 Audi A7 Premium Plus with 20-inch Sport package.

Okay, gays driving Jeeps may seem cliché — about 10 years ago I dated four guys in a row who had them — but the truth is, the Grand Cherokee has never been a better match for us than it is in 2013. Built on the same platform as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the Grand Cherokee has strong bones, a high-feature interior, and all-American good looks. It’s one of those rare automobiles that looks right at home no matter where it’s parked, whether it be in a Costco parking lot, at a yacht club or perched up on a rock. If it looks a little different than what you’ve seen before, that’s because it has been freshened for 2014, with squintier headlamps, a more sculpted front bumper, and a slightly revised rear end. Retained are its thick bodysides, trapezoidal wheel arches, high ground clearance and, of course, Jeep’s trademark seven-slot grille. Inside, the cabin can be spec’d out from basic to ultra-luxurious, and if you haven’t been in a recent Jeep or Chrysler product, you will be downright shocked with the sense of quality. That said, no matter how much leather and wood lines its interior, the Grand Cherokee wouldn’t be able to hold its own next to a Range Rover if it couldn’t keep up with it off-road, and so three all-wheel drive systems are available. Not that many folks will take either one off-road, but they always want to know they can. More relevant to Grand Cherokee buyers is the availability of a quiet new diesel V-6 that can tow a boat like a monster V-8 while delivering fuel economy numbers solidly in the mid-20-mpg range. Prices range from about $30K to $64K for the hedonistic and insanely fast SRT-8 model. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t go wrong with any. The one to get: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the diesel V-6

Best Economy Car — Ford Focus Ford’s been hitting home runs lately with its new products, and with its combination of thriftiness, attractive price, and of course, great looks, the 2013 Focus is one of Ford’s sweetest products ever. The 2013 Focus is available in many flavors, from basic (S, SE) to feature-laden (Titanium) to sporty (ST). There’s even an electric version. But unless you’re a serious gearhead or an environmental activist, I think the best one to get is the Focus Titanium, with blackout exterior accents and slick, multispoke wheels. Also, as with the saucy Audi A7, which took our luxury car crown this year, the Focus is markedly more stylish as a hatchback than it is in four-door sedan form. Both body styles, however, boast the same

The beloved Miata notwithstanding, Mazda remains one of the most under-considered car brands out there, especially among us gay folks. But trust me on this, anyone who runs out and buys a Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or Volkswagen Passat without first checking out the gorgeous, allnew 2014 Mazda 6 may have a case of buyer’s remorse in the making. Like many of the cars on this list, the Mazda 6’s appeal starts with its sexy looks. The front end features a broad, vertical grille, predatory headlamps (emblazoned with LED running lamps on top-tier Grand Touring models) and front wheels pulled forward to perfect the car’s proportions. Sculpted body sides and a swept-back windshield give the car a sleeker look than most anything in its class. And the big, 19-inch wheels that come standard on the mid-grade Touring and the Grand Touring models are pure glam. The 6’ beauty is more than skin deep. The cabin looks and feels more like an Audi than a Mazda, with restrained elegance and excellent fit and finish. Highlights include supremely comfortable cobra-wing front seats, cool white instrument illumination, and a sophisticated ergonomic interface that includes a segment-first “Commander Switch” dial that resembles BMW’s iDrive and Audi’s MMI knob for Touring models and above. The 6 also aspires to greatness in terms of its feature content, available with tons of safety and convenience features, such as rear cross-traffic detection, radar cruise control, front obstacle warning, and an integrated TomTom-based navigation system, among many other niceties. At this point, all Mazda 6s are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that sounds good and gets moving with gusto, thanks to an attentive six-speed automatic transmission and remarkably low overall weight. Fuel efficiency is stunning at 26 city and 38 on the highway with the automatic versions. Best of all, it is priced right on top of the segment’s more popular, though considerably less attractive, leaders. So now that you know about it, give it a whirl. Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, for example, is one of those extremely highfunctioning technologies you wouldn’t expect to find in a car like this, yet here it is. Also offered on the Focus are things like parallel parking system, reverse sensors, an available high-contrast white-and-black interior, and customizable ambient lighting. How does it drive? We wouldn’t let it win this category if it didn’t make us happy behind the wheel. Even in a segment of the market full of spunky runabouts, the Focus’ excellent steering and European-feeling handling are quite impressive. Power is

adequate from the four-cylinder engine, but trust us when we say it is best paired with the five-speed manual transmission rather than the six-speed automatic. Whichever you choose, however, you’ll get great fuel economy. If we could give an honorable mention award in this category, it would go to the 2014 Ford Fiesta, which basically takes all the Focus’s best attributes—style, SYNC, responsive handling and all—and shrink-wraps them into an even more economical package. On Saturday, June 29, 2013, board members and supporters of Fort Lauderdale’s National Stonewall Museum and Archives joined its executive director David Jobin in New York City at the historic Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village to present a plaque honoring the bar as the location of the June, 1969 riots that constituted a pivotal moment in the gay rights movement. Jobin talked about the significance of the Stonewall Inn and how the Stonewall National Museum and Archives draws upon its place in the history of gay rights in continuing the quest for equality and justice through visibility and recorded history. “Here in this room, we feel the presence

of men and women whose actions were so powerful in the history of the LGBT community,” he said. “We are honoring them with this commemorative plaque, letting them know how much we appreciate all they did.” He presented the plaque to Fred “Tree” Folk, a Stonewall veteran (a member of the group present at the riots of 1969) who is now a bartender at Stonewall Inn. Jobin reported that in the course of their conversation, Folk pledged to donate his personal mementos to the museum. Stonewall board member Gregory Stephens also spoke at the ceremony. “Giving this historic designation to Stonewall Inn and standing in this place today is momentous and personally soflagaynews //

moving. When I was asked to come onto the board, I reflected on why we need this museum,” he said. “I made the decision to do this knowing the importance of the LGBT struggle to be considered ‘normal’—not that we ever thought there was anything wrong with us. Comic Books Come Out New titles teach history and stand up to hate David-Elijah Nahmod

This year’s Pride celebrations have a definite comic twist: Two brand new gay comic book titles are being published. In July, Bluewater Productions offers The Stonewall Riots, a fact-based graphic novel which tells the story of that fateful night in New York City, 1969, when LGBTs fought back against oppression for the first time. The three-day battle they waged against harassment from the New York Police Department is credited with launching the modern equality movement. On August 7, Archie Comics will publish issue #10 of Kevin Keller. In that issue, openly gay Kevin, who hangs out with Archie and the gang at Riverdale High, will kiss his boyfriend in full view of readers. The storyline was inspired by an Archie boycott organized by One Million Moms, a Christian conservative group which seeks to silence entertainment they find “unwholesome”. Michael Troy, writer of The Stonewall Riots, and Dan Parent, writer/creator of the Kevin series, spoke with SFGN about why this turn of events is coming. “It seemed like the right time,” Parent said

in a phone interview. “He’s dating. There’s a kiss, but the sex is all implied.” Parent told SFGN that one of the characters in the story is a potential member of One Million Moms. “Veronica tapes the kiss and uploads it. The Million Moms lady goes crazy, it gets media attention, and there’s a community forum,” he said. “The Moms are on one side, the pro-Kevin camp is on the other.” Parent said that the familiar Archie characters are all on Kevin’s side. “It’s the most political storyline we’ve done so far, but it’s not going to be like this every issue,” Parent said. “There’s a lot of fun stuff coming: There will be some competition between Kevin and Veronica.” The Kevin comics are near and dear to Parent’s heart, yet the popular comic book auteur, who has became a staple at fan conventions, is straight. He said that a person’s sexuality has never been an issue with him. “I grew up in Vermont, the ‘first gay state’, in a very liberal household,” he said. “I was raised in an open minded manner, soflagaynews //

and I always find it strange to meet people from conservative areas — I’m astounded by their views!” Parent reported that parents of Archie readers have been very welcoming of Kevin, but that the most gratifying mail has come from LGBT youth. “We hear from parents of gay kids who thank us for having a gay character in a normal fashion,” Parent said. “We’ve also heard from kids and older gay men who tell us that Kevin ‘makes a difference.’” Parent is very excited to report that Warner Brothers is now developing a big screen, live action Archie movie, and that Kevin will be included. He’s grateful to One Million Moms for drawing so much attention to his baby. “They’ve increased sales and opened discussions,” he said. Openly gay Michael Troy told SFGN that he has a more personal stake in The Stonewall Riots, the book he authored. “Part of the reason we’re doing the book is that it keeps the story of Stonewall alive,” he said, speaking via phone from the gay mecca

of West Hollywood, Cali. “The younger generation has never heard of Stonewall. They have no idea of its impact.” Troy, 40, can recall a time when it wasn’t easy for gay couples to hold hands on the street. “That’s why people fought so hard. Rather than bitch about it, I’d rather educate. Stonewall is an important part of American history — it should be taught in schools.” He said that the world of comic book fandom has been largely supportive of his work. “I’ve been associated with gay comics for years,” he said. “There are more gay comic geeks than you think. Tri-County Rallies Following the Supreme Court’s historic decisions last Wednesday overturning the Defense of Marriage Act and dismissing a challenge to a lower court’s decision to overturn Prop 8 in California, the LGBT community came out to rally in support, in each of South Florida’s three counties.

Terry DeCarlo of Broward House and Mark Martin of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation were roasted and toasted in a community event held last Sunday night at the Manor Entertainment Complex on the Drive in Wilton Manors. Gary A. Santis Productions coordinated the fun and festive affair.

About 200 people showed up to the Broward County rally that took place at the U.S. Federal Building & Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. Activist Michael Rajner, who attended the rally, said “the jubilant crowd celebrated and hugged one another as cars and trucks honked while passing by.” Speakers included several married couples: Mary McGuire and Jackie Emmett who are married for 51 years and met while serving in the military; Bob Collier and Chuck Hunziker; and Pastor Leslie Tipton and Sandra Rutland-Tipton. Elected officials that spoke included: Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Dean Trantalis, Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Julie Carson and Florida State Senator Chris Smith.

More than 500 people packed the courtyard of the Miami Beach LGBT Visitors Center for the MiamiDade rally. Equality Florida Deputy Director Stratton Pollitzer called on the crowd to enlist in Florida’s fight for marriage equality by signing up for the organization’s new Get Engaged campaign, which is a statewide public education effort to win marriage in Florida. Speakers included the ACLU’s Daniel Tilley, who gave a quick overview of some of the legal effects of the ruling.

About 100 people showed to the Palm Beach County rally that took place at the West Palm Beach downtown library, Charlie Fredrickson, who attended the rally, said the atmosphere was “Giddy, absolutely giddy!” Speakers included WPB Mayor Jeri Muoio, State Rep. Mark Pafford, representatives of Compass Community Center, Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, MCC of the Palm Beaches, and others.

Sidelines Sports Bar to Remain ‘On The Drive’ Sidelines Sports Bar won’t be moving after all. The owner, Laurie Whittaker, had previously announced that it would be moving from its current location on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors to a new and larger location, where the former “Jib Room” was once located, on Oakland Park Boulevard. But it was not to be. Whittaker called off the move when she learned that her new prospective location was compromised with structural defects and unauthorized renovations that had not been made to code. “It would not be fair to our customers to move into a venue that was not up to par,” she stated. After signing the new lease and working with general contractors and architects, Whittaker discovered more than one problem.

As a result, she made an executive decision, and announced last week that the popular sports bar would be remain at its present location, but be “renovated and revived.” “They tried to rent me a parking lot as part of the lease that the property owner did not own. We were faced with delays and setbacks that were costing us money,” Whittaker noted. As a result, the bar, named in a national magazine as one of the best LGBT bars in the country, will remain on Wilton Drive, closing briefly in August for renovations to the both the exterior patio and interior facility. “We will be reopening before the NCAA and NFL Football season’s kickoff games in late August,” Whittaker said. Known for hosting charitable community events

and monthly cook-offs, along with its complimentary popcorn and peanuts, the venue has always been a focal point of the Wilton Manors gay community. An ongoing lawsuit over proprietary concerns has not in any way interfered with the club’s popularity as a hospitality hotspot. Said Whittaker, “For seven years, Sidelines has made a success of the gay sports bar brand and its loyal patrons include both local and out-of-town customers. They have enjoyed the fun and friendly atmosphere, excellent customer service, attention to cleanliness, and a comfortable ambience. “ Whittaker promises that atmosphere will continue for “years to come in a new and vibrant environment that will be as popular as ever.”
