What is COMPLERA? COMPLERA is a prescription HIV medicine that is used as a complete regimen to treat HIV-1 in adults who have never taken HIV medicines before and who have an amount of HIV in their blood (this is called “viral load”) that is no more than 100,000 copies/mL. COMPLERA contains 3 medicines – rilpivirine, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. It is not known if COMPLERA is safe and effective in children under the age of 18 years. ®

COMPLERA® does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses you must keep taking COMPLERA. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 to others: always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids; never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them, do not share personal items that may contain bodily fluids. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information you should know about COMPLERA? COMPLERA® can cause serious side effects: • Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include feeling very weak or tired, unusual (not normal) muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nausea or vomiting, feeling cold, especially in your arms and legs, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or a fast or irregular heartbeat. • Serious liver problems. The liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and fatty (steatosis). Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice), dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored bowel movements (stools), loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach pain. • You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking COMPLERA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and stop taking COMPLERA, your hepatitis may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking COMPLERA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health. COMPLERA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

Who should not take COMPLERA? Do not take COMPLERA if you have ever taken other anti-HIV medicines. COMPLERA may change the effect of other medicines and may cause serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may change your other medicines or change their doses. Do not take COMPLERA if you also take these medicines: • anti-seizure medicines: carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol, Tegretol-XR, Teril, Epitol); oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), phenobarbital (Luminal), phenytoin (Dilantin, Dilantin-125, Phenytek) • anti-tuberculosis medicines: rifabutin (Mycobutin), rifampin (Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane, Rifadin) and rifapentine (Priftin) • proton pump inhibitors for stomach or intestinal problems: esomeprazole (Nexium, Vimovo), lansoprazole (Prevacid), dexlansoprazole (Dexilant), omeprazole (Prilosec), pantoprazole sodium (Protonix), rabeprazole (Aciphex) • more than 1 dose of the steroid medicine dexamethasone or dexamethasone sodium phosphate • St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) If you are taking COMPLERA you should not take other HIV medicines or other medicines containing tenofovir (Viread, Truvada, Stribild or Atripla); other medicines containing emtricitabine or lamivudine (Emtriva, Combivir, Epivir, Epivir-HBV, Epzicom, Trizivir, Atripla, Stribild or Truvada); rilpivirine (Edurant) or adefovir (Hepsera). In addition, tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medications because they may interfere with how COMPLERA works and may cause side effects: • certain antacid medicines containing aluminum, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium carbonate (examples: Rolaids, TUMS). These medicines must be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after COMPLERA. • medicines to block stomach acid including cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid), or ranitidine HCL (Zantac). These medicines must be taken at least 12 hours before or 4 hours after COMPLERA. • any of these medicines: clarithromycin (Biaxin); erythromycin (E-Mycin, Eryc, Ery-Tab, PCE, Pediazole, Ilosone), fluconazole (Difulcan), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral) methadone (Dolophine); posaconazole (Noxifil), telithromycin (Ketek) or voriconazole (Vfend). • medicines that are eliminated by the kidneys like acyclovir (Zovirax), cidofovir (Vistide), ganciclovir (Cytovene IV, Vitrasert), valacyclovir (Valtrex) and valganciclovir (Valcyte).

Carly Rae Jepsen, ‘Train’ Drop Boy Scouts

Editorial

After public pressure, the musicians issued statements canceling their presentations Singer Carly Rae Jepsen and pop rock band “Train” announced they won’t perform at the Boy Scouts of America annual jamboree unless the organization drops its ban on gays. Train issued a statement on March 1 giving their reasons to drop out of the event. “When we booked this show for the Boy Scouts of America

we were not aware of any policy barring openly gay people from participation within the organization. Train strongly opposes any kind of policy that questions the equality of any American citizen,” part of the statement read. The message came soon after an online petition was started asking the artists to denounce the ban.

Finally on March 5, Jepsen said via Twitter that she wouldn’t participate in the event. “As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer,” she tweeted. The BSA’s national summit is scheduled to take place in July in West Virginia.

A Michigan tribe is close to becoming the third Indian Nation to legalize it Gay marriage could soon be legal in Michigan, but only for members of one of the local Native American tribes. The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indian nation recently voted a close 5 to 4 to approve gay marriage within the tribe, the Gay Star News reports. While Michigan bans same-sex marriage, the Indian nation is free

to enact its own laws within its territory. The law still needs to get the okay from the tribal chairman. If the chairman decides to veto the law, the tribal council can override his decision if they approve it by a larger margin of 7 to 2. If everything goes well, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa tribe would become the

third Native American nation to legalize gay marriage. The Coquille tribe legalized same-sex unions in 2009, while the Suquamish Tribe approved such unions in 2011 — one year before state residents voted at the ballot to legalize it in 2012. Two other branches of the Odawa are yet to pass gay marriage.

+Study: Gays and Lesbians Make Great Parents A study conducted by Cambridge University concluded that gay British parents are just as good as heterosexual parents. Given the results of the study, Sir Martin Narey, a UK government adoption advisor, is encouraging more LGBT people to consider fostering and adoption.

“Overall we found markedly more similarities than differences in experiences between family types,” professor Susan Golombok, director of the Centre for Family Research and co-author of the report, told the Gay Star News. In an interview with The Independent, Golombok added that gay men are particularly good at parenting because they are less likely to have depression,

Her book “Girls Who Score,” a compilation of erotic stories featuring lesbian athletes, was selected among 687 submissions. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony, which takes places on June 3 in New York City. “I am honored, humbled really, to have my first full-length anthology named as a finalist -- especially considering the other eleven contenders it was up against. To think that ‘Girls Who Score’ had such an impact on the judges that it made the top three from a list that included Best Lesbian Erotica is mind-blowing,” Goyanes said in a statement. “This is an honor for me and I cannot believe how blessed I am to have my debut anthology named as a Lammy finalist.” Goyanes’ erotic fiction has appeared in other collections, like “Best Lesbian Erotica 2012,” “Lesbian Cops,” and “Spankalicious: Erotic Adventures in Spanking.”

Bill Clinton: DOMA Must Go

Clinton stops just short of a full fledged apology in recent Op-ed piece Jason Parsley

jason.parsley@sfgn.com

In a strongly worded op-ed piece in the Washington Post last week, former President Bill Clinton said it was time to undo the Defense of Marriage Act, which he signed into law 17 years ago. DOMA prohibits the federal government from recognizing gay marriage. And on March 27 the Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments in a DOMA case. “As the president who signed the act into law, I have come to believe that DOMA is contrary to those principles and, in fact, incompatible with our Constitution,” he wrote in the op-ed. “When I signed the bill, I included a statement [see side bar] with the admonition that ‘enactment of this legislation should not, despite the fierce and at times divisive rhetoric surrounding it, be understood to provide an excuse for discrimination.’ Reading those words today, I know now that, even worse than providing an excuse for discrimination, the law is itself discriminatory. It should be overturned.” President Obama filed a brief with the Supreme Court arguing against DOMA last month. Clinton goes on to lay out his reasons why he first signed the bill and now why he believes it’s unconstitutional such as “Among other things, these couples cannot file their taxes jointly, take unpaid leave to care for a sick or injured spouse or receive equal family health and pension benefits as federal civilian employees. Yet they pay taxes, contribute to their communities and, like all couples, aspire to live in committed, loving relationships, recognized and respected by our laws.” He concludes his piece with: “Americans have been at this sort of a crossroads often enough to recognize the right path. We understand that, while our laws may at times lag behind our best natures, in the end they catch up to our core values. One hundred fifty years ago, in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln concluded a message to Congress by posing the very question we face today: “It is not ‘Can any of us imagine better?’ but ‘Can we all do better?’” “The answer is of course and always yes. In that spirit, I join with the Obama administration, the petitioner Edith Windsor, and the many other dedicated

men and women who have engaged in this struggle for decades in urging the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.” On the New Yorker Website, Richard Socarides, a former adviser to the Clinton White House on LGBT issues said in a reaction piece: “As Republicans prepared for the 1996 Presidential election, they came up with what they thought was an extremely clever strategy. A gay-rights lawsuit in Hawaii was gaining press coverage as an initial series of preliminary court rulings suggested that gay marriage might be legally conceivable there. Clinton was on the record opposing marriage equality. But Republicans in Congress believed that he would still veto legislation banning federal recognition of otherwise valid same-sex marriages, giving them a campaign issue: the defense of marriage.” So because Clinton was boxed in by Republicans, Socarides believed back then that the president had no choice but to sign the bill or face defeat in the general election against Bob Dole. Socarides points out that in 2004 the issue of gay marriage was successfully used against John Kerry to defeat him, by making sure it was on the ballot in several states including all important Ohio. While Clinton’s op-ed is probably less important than Obama’s Supreme Court brief John Aravosis of AmericanBlog opines that it may still matter to the nation’s highest court. “It’s not only symbolically important that Bill Clinton, the President who signed, and bragged about, DOMA is now in favor of striking down the law, it also may help us when the DOMA case goes before the Supreme Court at the end of this month. Whether on DOMA, or gay marriage generally, the Supreme Court will likely look towards a number of factors, including ‘society at large’ in making its decision. It’s thought that the court generally doesn’t like to get too far ahead of the culture when dealing with hot-button social issues. So in the same way that President Obama’s recent re-embrace of same-sex marriage should help us before the court, Bill Clinton’s position on DOMA (and his embrace of marriage equality a while back) should help as well.” soflagaynews //

1996 Statement From Clinton on DOMA On Friday, September 20, prior to signing the Defense of Marriage Act, President Clinton released the following statement: Throughout my life I have strenuously opposed discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against gay and lesbian Americans. I am signing into law H.R. 3396, a bill relating to same-gender marriage, but it is important to note what this legislation does and does not do. I have long opposed governmental recognition of same-gender marriages and this legislation is consistent with that position. The Act confirms the right of each state to determine its own policy with respect to same gender marriage and clarifies for purposes of federal law the operative meaning of the terms “marriage” and “spouse”. This legislation does not reach beyond those two provisions. It has no effect on any current federal, state or local antidiscrimination law and does not constrain

SouthFloridaGayNews.com

the right of Congress or any state or locality to enact anti-discrimination laws. I therefore would take this opportunity to urge Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, an act which would extend employment discrimination protections to gays and lesbians in the workplace. This year the Senate considered this legislation contemporaneously with the Act I sign today and failed to pass it by a single vote. I hope that in its next Session Congress will pass it expeditiously. I also want to make clear to all that the enactment of this legislation should not, despite the fierce and at times divisive rhetoric surrounding it, be understood to provide an excuse for discrimination, violence or intimidation against any person on the basis of sexual orientation. Discrimination, violence and intimidation for that reason, as well as others, violate the principle of equal protection under the law and have no place in American society.

Decade Old Viatical Fraud Takes Down Gay Philanthropist Steven Steiner Convicted of Fraud; Husband Acquitted Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

Early Days

last week, “the evidence established that as the fraud continued, investor money was required to prevent the MBC Ponzi-scheme from collapsing.” Ultimately, investors lost more than $750 million and MBC was accused of operating one of the most extensive Ponzi schemes in the nation.

A decade ago, Steve Steiner would have been running from venue to venue as a member of the Board of Directors of CenterOne, then the longest running HIV agency in Broward County. He would be gathering items for sale at the star studded annual ‘Art for AIDS’ auction, attended by the elite of South Florida’s LGBT community. The social point of the season for close to a decade, the event often raised $50,000, auctioning off high end Mediterranean cruises, rare canine breeds, and even dinner with A-List Hollywood hosts who were friends of Steiner, like the 2002 co-hostess Liza Minnelli. That was Steve Steiner then. The world Steve Steiner, 61, knows now is vastly different. He’s been a prisoner in a federal Miami jail since 2011, and last week was convicted of money laundering and obstruction of justice in connection with an AIDS related viatical fraud that dates back a decade.

Steiner’s Role

Steve Steiner was a founder and vice president of MBC, receiving more than $15 million in proceeds from the MBC fraud through two shell corporations that he controlled, Camden Consulting Inc., and SKS Consulting, Inc. In May 2004, the SEC filed a civil enforcement action against MBC and various “relief defendants,” including Steiner’s shell corporations, accused of hiding funds. On May 4, 2004, United States District Judge Federico A. Moreno entered an order appointing Coral Gables attorney Roberto Martinez as the receiver for MBC, with the mandate to identify, secure, trace, and recover the assets of MBC.

After a four-week trial in Miami, Steiner, also known as “Steven Steinger,” was convicted on 19 of 54 counts, including conspiracy to commit money laundering offenses, money laundering, conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, and various obstruction of justice offenses relating to Steiner’s participation in a scheme to launder and conceal more than $15 million in proceeds derived from the Mutual Benefits Corporation (MBC) fraud. In what local court observers call next to remarkable, his co-defendant Henry Fecker III, Steiner’s partner of decades, was acquitted on all charges. Steiner is set to be sentenced on May 8. The voluminous counts and gravity of the charges suggest he could be facing more than 20 years in federal prison.

The Ponzi Scheme

According to the evidence presented at trial, from approximately 1994 to 2004, MBC purchased life insurance policies from

people suffering from AIDS, chronically ill people, and elderly people. Having purchased the life insurance policies, MBC then sold fractionalized interests in the death benefits, known as “viatical settlements,” to approximately 30,000 investors. In promotional materials, MBC told investors that its settlements offered a fixed rate of return with low risk. MBC promised the investors’ their principals that the insurance companies were paying returns. Prosecutors argued that MBC misled soflagaynews //

investors about the estimated life expectancies of the insured persons, MBC’s title to certain life insurance policies, the risks associated with certain policies, the payment of premiums, and the source of funds used to pay investors. Witnesses testified that new investor money was used to pay premiums on life insurance policies purchased by earlier investors and to pay investors who requested their money back. According to the press release published by the Justice Department after the verdict

According to evidence presented at trial, the jury found that, following the closure of MBC, Steiner engaged in money laundering transactions designed to conceal the source of his proceeds from the fraud. At the same time, the U.S. attorney argued, Steiner acted to obstruct the SEC, the MBC receiver, and the United States District Court. Evidence at trial also disclosed that Steiner submitted false and misleading financial disclosure documents to the SEC to persuade the SEC to agree to a favorable settlement of the SEC claims against him and his shell corporations Camden Consulting and SKS Consulting, in the SEC Fraud Action. Based upon Steiner’s fraudulent financial disclosure, the SEC agreed to a reduced penalty of $3.9 million, and, on April 10, 2007, the District Court entered a final judgment in the SEC Fraud Action ordering Steiner, SKS, and Camden to pay $3.9 million

to the court-appointed receiver for MBC. Evidence at trial, however, persuaded jurors, at least on 19 counts, that Steiner acted to thwart an appointed receiver’s efforts to trace and recover MBC assets and recover on the final judgment. Prosecutors proved that Steiner repeatedly lied under oath during depositions, and concealed documents.

LGBT Attorney, Steiner Face More Charges Still

Even after this conviction, Steiner’s trials are not over. The case he lost is only one of three in which he has been charged. In United States v. Joel Steinger et al., Steiner and Henry Fecker III, the couple, who had beautiful condos at Points of America and vacation homes in New England, are still charged with engaging in a multi-million-dollar scheme to defraud insurance companies. In the last case, the most serious one, and the source for all the other prosecutions, Steiner is accused, with his brother and local gay attorney Anthony Livoti, of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud as well as money laundering in relation to the MBC fraud scheme. Livoti continues to practice law and vigorously asserts his innocence. Those that have already pled guilty including local attorney Michael J. McNerney, 63, who was sentenced to five years, and a lead company executive, Peter Lombardi, who was sentenced to 20 years in 2007. Each could now be called against Steiner in the pending prosecution.

Steve Steiner’s Philanthropic Past

As the Vice President of Mutual Benefits, Steiner was once named Man of the Year for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. At one annual fundraising dinner, he personally gave a $100,000 check to the Miami Center to Cure Paralysis. “We have a duty,” he said, “to help those who can’t always help themselves.”

As a philanthropist, Steiner was also instrumental in personally bankrolling and underwriting hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to The Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, the National Association of People With AIDS, the AIDS Memorial Quilt, The March of Dimes, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Food for Life, and The Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center. In full disclosure, Mutual Benefits once sponsored the ‘Norm Kent Show on WFTL’ telling an interviewer that he wanted “gay voices given credentialed advocates on local airwaves.” In 2004, Steiner explained his philanthropic passion to Express Gay News reporter Ian Drew: “I have just known too many people who have died from diseases not to use my energy and fortune to assist others in need.” Steiner’s odyssey began in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. He started by volunteering at Center One, in the early 1980’s, becoming a teacher for those who would care for the ill at the clinic. It was Steiner who eventually launched the buddy program to teach volunteers how to become an off-site family for the indigent. Stated the late John Weatherhead, who once served as the Executive Director of CenterOne, “Steve Steiner has played an active role in educating people about treating the HIV community with compassion and care, rather than distance and disgrace.” The late Gary Steinsmith, at one time the premier advocate for HIV patients in the early stages of the epidemic, referred to Steve Steiner in 2004 “as a mitzvah; a blessing from God.” In March of 2013, during a federal court trial in Miami, God was not on the jury.

Founder of bareback porn studio funds one of Florida’s biggest gay rights groups

Ryan Dixon

ryan.dixon@sfgn.com

While California is pushing to make bareback porn illegal, the largest gay rights group in Florida is taking in thousands of dollars from a bareback porn producer, raising questions about fundraising ethics. One of Equality Florida’s biggest donors is Jason Gibson, CEO and founder of gay porn studio Corbin Fisher, who has given more than $120,000 in donations to the organization. Gibson’s studio has recently started producing and profiting from bareback porn, which is porn where actors do not use condoms. Nadine Smith, executive director at Equality Florida, has called Gibson “generous” and said his donations have made it possible for them to operate. “Jason’s incredible generosity over the past several years has been a tremendous catalyst at a pivotal time,” Smith said as quoted by Xbiz. “His quiet generosity and commitment to our mission has been a catalyst and an inspiration.” A quiet donation received public attention after Equality Florida presented Gibson with their 2013 Service and Leadership Award on Feb 15. CJ Ortuno wouldn’t have given Gibson an award. If fact, he said would not have even taken the money. Ortuno, who is executive director of SAVE Dade, a Miami-based gay rights organization, said there are ethics in fundraising and lines not to cross, especially when you’re a political group. “There are absolutely ethics in the way we [SAVE Dade] raise our funds,” Ortuno told SFGN. “As a political group we try to build capital – to build power,” he said. Equality Florida’s fights for the betterment of the LGBT community in the state; Gibson’s donation money comes directly from gay porn actors who risk contracting HIV while filming bareback. In 2004, Los Angeles County health officials counted at least 51 adult film actors who may have been exposed to the virus; authorities said they were able to contain the outbreak. Then, a 2009 article by the Los Angeles Times stated that at least 22 performers who filmed porn had become infected in the last five years in Los Angeles County alone. The rate of infections in the industry prompted law makers to bring up a measure to make condom use mandatory. In November 2012, Los Angeles residentsvoted to implement the measure.

“Donations from questionable, although legal, [sources] can chip away from positive capital,” Ortuno added. The Association of Fundraising Professionals has been the standardbearer for professionalism in fundraising for 50 years. The AFP is an association of individuals and organizations that generate philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable institutions. Ortuno himself is a member. Smith and Equality Florida are not. Standard 12 of the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and standards states: “Members shall take care to ensure that all solicitation materials are accurate and

policies that include non-discrimination protections for LGBT Floridians, Domestic Partnership recognition, and LGBTinclusive anti-bullying policies to protect our students. We could not have achieved so much in such a short period of time without Jason’s unwavering commitment to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBT community.” SFGN also reached out to Corbin Fisher Studios to speak with Jason Gibson. Vice President of Business Development for the studio Brian Dunlap responded saying Gibson was out of town. Dunlap said there was never a question from Equality Florida about Gibson’s donations.

correctly reflect their organization’s mission and use of solicited funds.” For its part, Equality Florida issued a statement in response: “Equality Florida’s Service & Leadership Award is given to honor an individual whose tremendous support has directly contributed to Equality Florida’s ability to break through to a whole new level of reach and effectiveness in the effort to secure full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. “Jason Gibson’s incredible generosity over the past several years came at a critical time and it has been a tremendous catalyst for change in Florida. With Jason on our team, we played a critical role in overturning Florida’s adoption ban and passed 25 new local soflagaynews //

“I don’t think anyone should assume such a stigma exists with bareback content as your question does,” Dunlap told SFGN. “While there are definitely some who might not care for [bareback porn], there are just as many others who might prefer it or not give it much thought at all -- it just doesn’t stand out to people as much as some might assume.” The reason for Equality Florida’s acceptance of the funds could lie more on needs than ethics. According to the Movement Advancement Project’s 2010 National LGBT Movement Report, organizations working in the movement for LGBT equality are showing strong signs of financial health and operating efficiency in the face of a cumulative 20

SouthFloridaGayNews.com

percent revenue decline from 2008. Here are a few key notes: ♂The 39 participating organizations’ combined 2009 expenses of $165.6 million are only half of the combined annual expenses of just the 10 largest organizations working to oppose LGBT equality ($333.1 million). ♂All 39 participants exceeding the efficiency standards of both the American Institute of Philanthropy and the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. An average of 79 percent of expenses is spent on programs and services, 9 percent on management and general expenses, and only 12 percent on fundraising. ♂ Less than 4 percent of all LGBT adults in the U.S. donated $35 or more to these LGBT organizations. While organizations are generally effective at retaining smaller donors (those giving $35 or more) year over year, the number of larger donors (those giving $1,000 or more) is dropping and not easily replaced. That last note resonates with SAVE Dade and Ortuno. According to him, LGBT people are more likely to fund a museum over a political advocacy group. “It’s tough for us,” Ortuno said. “We only have 200 people who give over $1,200 a year so we have to keep the doors open to donations—keeping in mind we are extremely reliant on public perception.” That importance given to public perception has even forced SAVE Dade to turn down money from people who had good intentions but who the organizations’ board of directors turned down because they were worried it could have been perceived as a conflict of interest. “Even though at the end of the day they were doing it for the right reasons, it’s best if we just stay neutral and not take the money,” Ortuno added. Dunlap said the focus should be on the goal, not the money. “I can’t speak for anyone at Equality Florida,” Dunlap said. “But I would have to assume they’ve been more focused on diligently, dedicatedly working towards accomplishing meaningful things and making the best use of financial resources, regardless of source.” Not sure about the ethics of fundraising? analysis violence

The Closet of Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Sean McShee considered as a minimal estimate. People tend to underreport sexual violence and sexual orientation. If this is a minimal estimate, however, then services for LGBT sexual and intimate partner violence should be added to the LGBT political agenda. According to this report, only a small fraction of the 2,000 domestic violence shelters in the U.S. are equipped for lesbian victims, even fewer are available for gay/ bi and other men who have sex with men. Camilo’s experience confirms this. This April, Andres Santofimio and Charles Dickey of the Pride Center and Ana Ferrer and Griselda Perez from the Nancy J. Cotterman Center will be forming a professionally led support group for survivors of male on male sexual assault,

Breaking the Silence: Regaining Power and Control (see box). Andres Santofimio of the Pride Center has a message for victims: “You’re not alone. There are other guys going through this. You have the Pride Center. Take advantage of the resources. Come and talk. Don’t be alone.” As sexual and intimate partner violence occurs at all income levels, ethnic groups, and religions, it should not surprise anyone that this violence also occurs within the LGBT community. But as people keep relearning, the only way to solve a problem is to acknowledge it, own it, and then deal with it. In Broward in 2006, a gay man, Camilo (not his real name), was sexually assaulted by someone he knew through mutual friends. He found no public services. The “friends” he had in common with his assailant, took his assailant’s side, which added to his guilt for the attack. He felt no support. Camilo entered a long period of isolation and depression. His partner was supportive but the attack changed Camilo, which changed the relationship. Camilo described his life at that time: “As a survivor of sexual assault, I needed to talk to someone, to grieve, to regain trust. It’s very difficult to trust again when your trust has been betrayed like that.” Camilo was fortunate. He had access to a private therapist and was able to rebuild his life. He is no longer a victim; he has become a survivor. Sexual violence includes sexual assault and intimate partner violence. In January 2013, the CDC released data concerning lesbians, gay men and bisexuals from The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS). Rates of sexual violence were much higher among women than men and rates among gay and bi-men

16

// 3.13.2013 // SFGN.com //

were higher than those of heterosexual men (See Table 1). Bi-sexual women reported the highest rates of sexual violence of all groups. Even more troubling, 48.2 percent of bisexual female rape victims reported being raped between the ages of 11 and 17 and another 33.1 percent between the ages of 18 and 24 (81.3 percent before age 24). This survey is the first large survey of sexual violence that asked questions about sexual orientation (9,086 female and 7,421 male respondents) and was designed to estimate sexual and intimate partner violence among the larger U.S. population. While this survey asked about sexual orientation, its questions were based on heterosexual experience. It also failed to address transsexual issues. This survey failed to ask questions specific to sexual minorities or to groups with high rates of HIV infection: Threatening to “out” someone as lesbian, gay, bi, or HIV positive. If non-consensual voyeurism-exhibitionism is considered a form of sexual violence, shouldn’t gay bashing and reparative therapy also be considered sexual violence? My HIV Diary Face of HIV, Week 27

Ryan Dixon with two other models on the set of his photo shoot for Isentress. Photo courtesy of Ryan Dixon

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 26

(March 1 to March 7) I’m excited today. Not only am I about to reach day 200 in my medicine study, but I just had the opportunity to meet some amazing people who are passionate about HIV treatment and what being positive is really all about. I just participated in a photo shoot for an advertising company based out of New York. They were shooting

ads for the pharmaceutical company Merck. Merck has created the first in a new class of drugs called integrase inhibitors. The brand name of the drug is Isentress. It has only been on the market since 2007, making it a fairly new drug to help combat HIV. It works best when combined with other antiretrovirals. Isentress had a campaign in the past that showed four people in difference poses in black and white with magenta trimming. I’ve seen tons of advertisements for HIV drugs and not just from working for SFGN. I like to think I’ve done my study of different medications and what each one does in the last four years. One thing I have noticed about ads for HIV drugs, they only seem to want to show you a beautiful face. HIV is so much more than that. I was pleased to find out the Isentress shoot wasn’t just going to be me standing by myself, but rather it placed me in a scene with two other people. We were “shoppin,” I think we actually did enjoy each others’

company. We held conversations about the same French cuff shirts while the photographer snapped away. The shots showed people in real life, not just posed on a white background and then superimposed into an ad. My feeling is that this ad will do more than just advertise a pill. It will show people that HIV affects everyone, but that people live completely normal lives with the help of medication. I often get messages online and in person that people can’t believe that I’m HIV positive. I never know how to respond. Is there a certain face of HIV that I don’t know about? Do people still believe that HIV is just something that only older gay men have? I don’t really understand what people really think of HIV, outside of getting told I’m disgusting online. I’m hoping this new campaign will show people that HIV is something we can all relate to. It’s not the HIV of the 80’s anymore. I just wish people could see it.

Sex, Scandal, and Sadness

Whether or not the Pope resigned because of a gay-related scandal in the Vatican, there is no doubt that gay sexual scandals among the clergy today are causing the average Catholic, and the average gay man, a great deal of sadness. The head of the Scottish Catholic Church, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, has resigned amidst allegations he was physically inappropriate with four priests. Monsignor Kevin Wallin is in a Connecticut jail for dealing crystal meth from the rectory, which he did to pay for his sex and drug addictions. When I read about Cardinal O’Brien, I had much less sympathy for him than I did for Monsignor Wallin, because the Cardinal was publicly anti-gay. Such hypocrisy makes me angry and ill. But the story of Fr. Wallin made me very sad, because he represents to me the disturbing syndrome of selfdestruction that I see among so many smart, talented, good-hearted, gay men inside and outside of the Catholic Church. And in Kevin Wallin’s tragic fall from grace, I see myself, had I made different choices in life than I did. Had I pursued the path to the seminary, I suspect that I would have been a very popular priest. I care deeply about the wellbeing of others. I’m funny, love people, am young at heart, am spiritual, independent, a good speaker, and a minister at the core of my being. I’d also have been a closeted, gay man whose guilt and fear about sex would have

made me a prime candidate for acting out inappropriately, not with children, but with other men. Because I have a compulsive personality, I’d become addicted to drugs if someone introduced me to them in the context of sex. I would have had sex and taken drugs in the attempt to leave no stone unturned in my search for selfunderstanding and affirmation. Without the intervention of wise, strong, loving friends, I would have ended up looking in the mirror wondering in horror and shame what had happened to the sweet, young man who entered the seminary because he wanted to live a life of loving service. There are many gay men today who look in the mirror and wonder how they became the sex-obsessed, drug-addicted people they see reflected back at them. They perhaps look over at a picture of themselves in their graduation gown, grinning with excitement about the life they might have as an attorney, doctor, architect, actor, singer, lover, and father. But their careers and their plans for family life took a back seat to their obsession to look young and hot, and to be sexually satisfied. They became addicted to searching Manhunt, Grindr, and Gay Sex Hookup on the Internet for a nearby sex partner with whom they might fall in love. They took crystal meth because initially it enhanced their sex, but then sex without it felt flat. Eventually, they got HIV. They thought

only stupid people got HIV, but soon it became an important component of their gay male identity. Everyone they knew was HIV-positive. But, so what? Half of the gay non-profits in town are set up to meet the needs of a person with AIDS, so it’s not such a big deal to have the disease. But when they hit bottom, like being arrested for selling drugs from the rectory, or losing their job, they are forced to look in the mirror, and try to make sense of how the very sweet, innocent, young man got to the sorry place he is today. The sex scandals among gay men my age, regardless of whether they’re in the Vatican, or in my circle of friends, make me angry because I feel useless to do Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Birmingham in September 2010. anything helpful. Why is PrideFest Important? Compass celebrates its 20th PrideFest Julie Seaver

The weekend of March 23-24, the community, both LGBT and its allies, will march in a parade through downtown Lake Worth to Bryant Park, bringing all of their families, friends, glamour, and style to the Twentieth Annual PrideFest of the Palm Beaches. PrideFest of the Palm Beaches, which celebrates the area’s LGBT community, is blasting out some seriously high-profile headlining acts this year: from Michaela Paige of last season’s NBC’s the Voice to Gioia Bruno of Expose, the first group ever to have four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The eclectic lineup, mixing genres and generations, is essential for promoting diversity and the goals and theme of this year’s festival, “United Colors of Pride.” Working with performers who are LGBT or who are very supportive of our community is especially important, with each performer and group bringing something special to the stage. Sponsors, vendors, performers, festival goers and the hundreds of volunteers join together with the same message: a message of inclusion for the celebration that lasts all weekend and throughout the month of March in south Florida. Everybody is welcome to PrideFest and it’s not just a festival for the gay community. This is a festival to celebrate the culture, music and diversity of people in general. Celebrating 25 years of serving the community this year, the staff and volunteers at Compass, the organizers of the festival, aim for diversity while highlighting the many programs and services that Compass offers over 27,000 center visitors each year. In addition to great music, great food and the much-anticipated, signature gay pride t-shirts that benefit Compass’ LGBT youth group each year, PrideFest offers family and friends an opportunity to receive much more than a really fun weekend. There is the opportunity to receive health and wellness information, HIV prevention and testing, visit with the affirming churches of the area, and meet the many members of the

Pride Business Alliance community who offer products and services to everyone, regardless of race, sexual orientation or gender expression. Sure, there will be the campy fun that comes with pride parades and fabulous music, but what really excites everyone this year is the balance between family, history and the activities everyone has come to associate with the festival. It’s still a party, but it’s a party with a purpose and the kind of thing that builds a community. This is what it’s all about people! For more than two decades, pride festivals across the country have celebrated LGBT selfhood and the hope for cultural change. That’s still true. But now more than ever, with seismic shifts in public policy and President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same sex marriage, Pride will be about more than just a promise. In its earliest stages, PrideFest meant something very different in the beginning when we were trying to find our place in this world, then it gradually changed to the festival side of it. I think it’s about time to balance the festival side with the education and activist side. What we see over and over is that the LGBT community often takes two steps forward and is then forced two steps back. We have changed our tone of the past, and are not just sitting back and allowing the changes to happen as they might. We are continuing to stand up and make the changes happen that offer equality. And in a widely perceived conservative state, thousands of LGBT and allied people can come together and celebrate unity and stand for equality. PrideFest celebrates our equality, our differences and shows the community that we are proud of who we are. opinion publisher’s message Norm Kent

The Diarrhea in Our Lives

For years, I have been a fan, follower and admirer of Ashleigh Brilliant. His wit and words have been recorded in books and populate gift shops everywhere with terse but incisive phrases capturing the essence of our shared humanity. More than anything else, Brilliant seems to understand the universality of the human condition; that the things in our lives, which we think are intimately most sacred, are in fact universally most common. One of the greatest radio talk show hosts of all time, the late Neil Rogers, understood that better than most. From his studios in South Florida, whether it was at WIOD or WQAM, Neil would shock our senses by starting off his show talking about his diarrhea the night before. Inevitably, someone would call in and say how gross that was, and those of you who heard Neil would know that he would rail back at that caller with wit and wisdom, venom and vitriol that left you shaking with laughter. It’s been two years since ‘Uncle Neil,’ one of my best friends for 30 years, passed away. He was South Florida’s leading liberal iconoclast. Can you imagine what he would be saying about drone flights today? With Neil, you never knew what to expect. He could have interrupted an argument I was making in court to demand that I rearrange his will to include a new beneficiary, some hot dude he had just met at the Plantation Mall. “I am leaving my entire estate to him. Have my new will brought to me at the Panthers game tonight!” You can’t make these things up. Neil actually did that. Neil was an open, transparent gay man, who talked about his betting, his boys, and his lawyer ‘Norma,’ too busy publishing his ‘fag’ newspaper than tending to his professional needs. Hell, if you don’t know who Neil was, stop reading this column for a moment, go to YouTube and run out his ‘Bridge tender’ rap. Addicted you will become. Anyway, Neil was impatient. He had no patience for patience. Neil had a commanding and demanding passion for professionalism at every level, whether it was the telephones in his studio or the producers running his show. He had no tolerance for mediocrity, and that impatience made him a demanding taskmaster on one hand, but a greater person on the other. Honest to himself, he apologized to no one. He came out as gay in 1976, on the air

in South Florida, the same year he enraged half of Miami by calling a papal trip to Miami a colossal waste of police dollars and highway space. “Let him go click his red heels at the Vatican with all the other priests and their little boys,” Neil would say. He was prescient. “All you have to know, kids,” he would say on the air, “is that if some guy tells you that you have to pull your pants down to be his friend, he is the pervert and you should run away.” Then, 10 seconds later, he would

newspaper are just not enough. To quote Kipling’s poem “If,” another favorite, I am just trying to fill the “unforgiving minute with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run.” Ashleigh Brilliant, on the other hand, has captured our universal commonality with pot shots such as “Anything made of chocolate is good,” or how about the epigram “Everytime I close the door on reality, it comes in through the window.” Like Ashleigh Brilliant, I have no patience for apathy or inertia. There are just too many

go on a rant about some hot bag boy at Publix, he wanted to pick up. That, folks, was our ‘Uncle Neil.’ Just like I collected baseball cards as a kid, I guess today’s kids have collected tapes and discs of Neil’s shows. For the past few months, more and more of Neil’s old shows are popping up on YouTube. The one he did on gun control in 1999 after the shootings at Columbine is riveting. You may not remember all the players, but his caustic and candid comments make me realize whether it was Columbine in 1999, or Colorado in 2012, our lives are linked and shared; past and present together. Like me, Uncle Neil loved Ashleigh Brilliant’s post cards. They are called Pot Shots. How appropriate for me, elected last week as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws. things to do and too short a time to do it in. I always wanted to be more patient, but I wanted that patience to come to me right damn freaking now. I hate slowing down and waiting, although as I get older, “I have abandoned my search for truth. A good fantasy will do.” Ashleigh Brilliant’s line of course, not mine. In my time here on this planet, I have been lucky enough to be blessed with great friends and a wonderful family; to have survived cancer and carried on. I have woken up on beaches in Mykonos and the floors of Amsterdam’s hotels all too stoned. I realize that as much as I aspire to the sun and the stars, sooner or later, life brings you shade as much as rainbows. You simply pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start over again. Faced with some health issues this past month, I have been playing the Hospitalization visit Waltz. While the staff of SFGN has risen

to the occasion of putting out our largest and most incredible newspaper ever, I have dealt with cardiologists, neurologists, oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists. At Pridefest, which I had no business attending even for two hours, my friend Peter Clark, the publisher of Hotspots, cut me down with the line of the day. “I notice you have not been to a proctologist,” he said. “But then we all know you have always been a perfect asshole.” Everyone laughed, because everyone is made better with humor and laughter. It is another thing we all have in common. The truth is, no matter what I do, or as busy as I am, I am no different than any of you. As we get older, we hurt quicker, and heal slower. Every day things are getting better, and if you know me, there are worse things than me having to stay at home and watch the World Baseball Classic and major league spring training games in bed. Hell, I will always be grateful for how much I love my life – especially the gay part. By the time it is over, whenever that day comes, and I hope no day soon, I will have been able to marry my shortstop. Neil Rogers used to say, ‘there are a lot of great Italian restaurants out there, but nothing in life feels as great as a good crap.’ Gross and garbage mouthed though he often was, take a few courses of chemo and tell me that ain’t true. Neil Rogers was also a gay man who used his pulpit on the airwaves to defend homosexuality, and your right to be who you are today. Might I add he personally endorsed, sponsored and raised over one million dollars for embryonic AIDS agencies, animals in distress and homeless populations in Miami. All he wanted to be was a ‘fag’ who hosted a radio show. Other than that, leave his life the hell alone. Ashleigh Brilliant, the world’s most brilliant epigrammatist, knew what he was doing when he named one of his books, “Be a Good Neighbor, and Leave Me Alone.” Leave me to determine my personal choices. You worry about your own diarrhea . We all have been there. At the end of day, your life has got to be your own. Don’t live it for someone else. Dare to be you. For what else are you here? Go see La Cage, and remember the words, “I am who I am, and what I am needs To learn more about no explaining.” Ashleigh Brilliant visit AshleighBrilliant.com.

Moving Forward at The Pride Center Art show & other events for LBT women Andrea Dulanto

adulanto03@gmail.com

The Women With Pride program at The Pride Center celebrates Women’s History Month by offering an art show, a book club and an empowerment series as well as a regular schedule of events for LBT women. Moving Forward: Women of the 21st Century, the third annual art show produced by local LGBT group, Closet Talk, is on display from now until March 29, 2013. Fourteen women artists are featured in this exhibition at The Pride Center. A gallery reception with food and drinks is scheduled for March 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. “All artists will be in attendance to discuss their pieces,” confirmed Judissa Atkinson, co-owner of Closet Talk. “We have quite an interesting mix of art, from figurative art to photography, graffiti to abstract, contemporary paintings to metal sculpture, pen and ink to oil. Many of the pieces are about women of power and progress in the U.S. and abroad.” Karina Luna’s “Freudian Embrace” is “a painting involving a private scene of two women embraced in an intimate moment [and] one of the women looks to be expecting a child,” noted Atkinson. She also observed that Luna’s painting emulates the style of Lucian Freud and Alice Neel, “[exploring] the body’s beauty as well as its flaws.” Ofelia Atkinson’s “Photo 51” centers on biophysicist Rosalind Elsie Franklin, and Chris Strait’s “Our Lady of Gagalupe” provides another perspective on LGBT icon Lady Gaga. Atkinson describes Teepop’s “For Every Woman- Angela Davis” as “an empowerment piece.” Another of Teepop’s works, “Four Women,” refers to the song by Nina Simone. Atkinson’s own work, “Laura PollánLibertad,” depicts the late founder of one of Cuba’s main opposition groups Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White). Although this month’s art show will be one of the most visually engaging events at The Pride Center, there are also other notable programs on the schedule. Women With Pride has started a new book club for women, “Between the Covers.” Participants will read Katherine Hepburn— The Untold Story, and meet for a discussion on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The comically titled “Hoos-hoos, Coochies and Treasure Chests” presents information

As far as regularly scheduled events, Monday Night Women’s Group and Lavender Speaks are always listed on the Women With Pride program. Monday Night Women’s Group meets every Monday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. This activity gives women the opportunity to have lively discussions, and to interact with other women outside of the bar scene. On the third Thursday of every month from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Lavender Speaks provides a place for creative individuals to express themselves. For the past three years, Debbie Chamberlin has organized

the event. She describes the environment as supportive. “It’s an opportunity to share in the creativity of the community,” Chamberlin said. The next Lavender Speaks is scheduled for Thursday, March 21 with featured performer, pianist Ani Kambur. An open mic will follow Kambur’s performance. Even after Women’s History Month is over, the book club and Empowerment Series will continue to be offered at The Pride Center, along with the other regular events. Hopefully, this is an indication that the celebration of LBT women will also continue, and that more Women With Pride activities are added to the schedule.

Meals on Wheels Feeding LGBT seniors at the Pride Center Jesse Monteagudo

jessemonteagudo@comcast.net

Broward Meals On Wheels (BMOW), founded in 1985, is a private not-for-profit organization that provides service to senior citizens. BMOW’s self-described mission is to “provide essential services to improve health, reduce isolation, and promote independent living for seniors in our community.” Its programs and services include home delivered meals, meals for companion pets, nutrition education, grocery shopping, and congregate meal dining sites. In January 2013 Mark Adler became BMOW’s executive director. The openlygay Adler comes to BMOW with excellent credentials: “I have been in non-profit management for nearly 25 years, coming to Fort Lauderdale from San Diego after serving two years in the Peace Corps in Guyana. at Planned Parenthood and at SunServe, I worked on many projects in collaboration with the Pride Center (or what was then the GLCC). I worked with Ken Merrifield and other senior advocates from the LGBT community in forming the Tuesday morning Coffee and Conversation group with the GLCC’s Senior Advisory Council back around 2008. Annise Parker / Mayor of Houston May 17, 1956The voters of Houston have opened the door to history. I know what this means to many of us who never thought we could achieve high office.”

In 2009, when Annise Parker was elected, Houston became the largest city in the nation with an openly gay mayor. Houston is the fourth most populous city in the United States. Annise Parker was born and raised in Houston. Her mother was a bookkeeper, and her father worked for the Red Cross. Annise received a National Merit Scholarship to Rice University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and sociology. After graduation, Parker began a 20-year career as a software analyst in the oil and gas industry. In 1997, she won a seat on the Houston City Council, making her Houston’s first out elected official. In 2003, Parker was elected city controller. She served two additional terms before being elected mayor. Parker’s mayoral triumph didn’t come without a fight and controversy. Conservative groups criticized Parker for her “gay agenda” and distributed fliers featuring Parker and her partner, asking the question, “Is this the image Houston wants to portray?” Parker campaigned with her partner, Kathy Hubbard, and their three children. Despite the attacks, Parker won the election in a city that denies its employees domestic partner benefits, and in a state where gay marriage and civil unions are constitutionally banned. Parker was recognized as Council Member of the Year by the Houston Police Officers Union. In 2008, Houston Woman Magazine named her one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women. 42

Sheila Kuehl / Member of the California Legislature February 19, 1941“The hardest thing I ever did, coming out, turns out to give me a reputation almost instantly for honesty and courage, which any politician would kill for.”

In a 1994 election, Sheila James Kuehl became the first openly gay California legislator. In 1997, she was the first woman in California to be named Speaker pro Tempore. She was a member of the nation’s first legislative LGBT Caucus. In 2002, she coauthored a bill that defined marriage as a civil contract between two persons, which passed the state legislature, but was vetoed by the governor. While an undergrad at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), she portrayed the irrepressible Zelda Gilroy in “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.” Although her character Zelda was popular enough for CBS to plan a spin-off, the pilot was canceled. A network representative later explained she was “just a little too butch.” During the same time, Kuehl was banned from her sorority house when letters from her girlfriend exposed her sexuality. After television roles started to dry up, she transitioned into academia. She became associate dean of students at UCLA. Thereafter, Kuehl graduated from Harvard Law School. Kuehl went into private law practice specializing in civil rights and women’s issues. She advocated for victims of domestic abuse and cofounded the California Women’s Law Center in 1989. In 2000, she was elected a member of the California State Senate for the 23rd district of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Most significant are her successes in civil rights legislation. As of 2007, she authored 171 bills that have been signed into law.

Christine Quinn / NYC Council Speaker July 25, 1966“The fact that I was elected…the first openly gay woman, and then everybody went right back to business, really shows that in New York, we embrace diversity.”

Christine Quinn is the first woman and the first openly gay candidate elected speaker of the New York City Council. She is the city’s second most powerful elected official. Quinn grew up in Glen Cove, New York, a Long Island suburb. In 1988, she graduated from Trinity College, where she earned degrees in urban studies and education. Her first foray into politics was in 1991, when she managed the New York City Council campaign of Thomas Duane. When Duane won the election, he and fellow candidate Antonio Pagan became the City Council’s first openly gay members. Quinn served as Duane’s chief of staff for five years. Before she ran for office, Quinn served as the executive director of the New York City AntiViolence Project, and was appointed by Mayor Rudy Giuliani as a member of the New York City Police/Community Relations Task Force. In 1999, Quinn won a seat on the New York City Council. In 2006, she was elected City Council speaker. Quinn boycotted New York’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade because of the parade’s policy banning gays from marching. In 2006, she was unsuccessful in negotiating to wear a gay pride pin. In 2008, Quinn was named Irish American of the Year by the Irish Echo newspaper. The New York Post has twice named Quinn one of the 50 most powerful women in New York City, and New York Magazine has named her one of the most influential New Yorkers. Quinn lives with her partner, attorney Kim Catullo.

Gay Men’s Chorus teams up with Symphony for special concerts

Singers, instrumentalists and audiences alike will enjoy a unique musical experience as the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and the Symphony of the Americas take the stage together for a series of concerts in Fort Lauderdale. “We’re probably the first gay chorus, for sure in South Florida, possibly in Florida, to perform with a symphony as prestigious the Symphony of the Americas,” said Gordon

Roberts, artistic director of the chorus. Added Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, artistic director of the symphony, “It’s going to be a blast. With 150 singers and 70 in the orchestra all on one stage, we’re just going to blow away (the audience).” Both agree it’s going to be a unique experience for everybody involved. The program, which includes traditional choral and orchestral classics as well

as plenty of lighter “pops” fare, will be presented four times, twice at the symphony’s primary venue, the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theatre, and twice at the Sunshine Cathedral, where the chorus regularly performs. And, each conductor will take turns on the podium. Brooks-Bruzzese will conduct choral classics like Beethoven’s “Hallelujah Chorus” from the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives and Roberts will lead the symphony in orchestral classics including Bernstein’s Overture to Candide and Brahms’ Fourth Hungarian Dance. “I’m really putting myself out there (as a conductor),” chuckled Roberts, “but it’s just going to be a lot of fun.” The program will include a selection, Roller Coaster, from Roberts’ own musical, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, that premiered in 2004 and relates the tumultuous story of a couple riding out the “ups and downs” of their relationship. “We’re really going to mix it up,” said Brooks-Bruzzese, with a moving rendition of Battle Hymn of the Republic, New York, New York and even Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend. “I first heard the chorus about three years ago and knew they were going to be something special.” Rounding out the concert will be arrangements of Singing in the Rain, What a Wonderful World and, of course, Over the Rainbow. “At the beginning, we were going to do a traditional concert with each group doing a half, but we realized it might be the only time our audience may hear the symphony and the symphony audience may hear the chorus,” explained Roberts, “so we decided to change everything around to give the audience a musical banquet.” The concert also takes on special significance as the Symphony of the Americas marks its 25th anniversary this season.

SouthFloridaGayNews.com

Earlier this winter, the symphony celebrated with 25 Days of Music, a musical gift to the residents of Broward County. Each day, beginning Jan. 1 and concluding Jan. 25 at the symphony gala, the orchestra presented “flash mob” style performances, educational programs in the schools, concerts at local retirement communities and ticket and CD giveaways. The highlight was the flash mob appearance at the Las Olas Art Show on Jan. 5. Musicians emerged from the massive crowd to perform Beethoven’s famous Ode to Joy and delighted hundreds of onlookers. “It’s no small accomplishment for a nonprofit orchestra to achieve a milestone like our 25th anniversary, especially in these difficult economic times,” said Brooks-Bruzzese. “As we began to plan, we wanted to do something special and the 25 Days of Music were our musical gift back to our friends and neighbors across South Florida.”

Winter Party!

a&e festival

Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary in Miami Beach Photos and story by

Tony Adams

The 20th edition of the annual Winter Party Festival (WPF) held in Miami Beach this weekend proved once again the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s (NGLTF) ability to throw an excellent “party with a purpose” for the more than 10,000 guests who come to the sixday festival climaxing with a joyful dance party on the beach. Launched in 1994 as a one-time charity dance event on the sands of South Beach, WPF has evolved into a week-long series of events. A portion of the net proceeds of WPF support NGLTF efforts to take action, build power and create change for LGBT people. The majority of the proceeds are donated to local service organizations through a grantmaking process administered by The Miami Foundation. Recipients include Stonewall National Museum and Archives, Pridelines Youth Services, Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, Equality Florida and the Aqua Foundation for Women. At Saturday’s “Under One Sun” pool party at the Shelborne Resort Hotel on Collins Street in South Beach, NGLTF Executive Director Rae Carey said, “In years past we often found ourselves struggling for and hoping for progress in the attainment of equality. Not this year! This year, we are able to celebrate significant victories, not the least of which was the election night four-state marriage rights vote that went our way. We have major legislative initiatives about to pass and a Supreme Court judgment that will be great for us. This year is a time of huge celebration.” Although the festival attracts serious gay “eye candy” from

around the world, a quick scan of the crowd disclosed men and women of all colors, sizes and shapes, including a significant number of young newbies rubbing shoulders with veterans of festivals past. The WPF does not seem to be losing any steam. Twinks shared the dance floor with muscle bears, and English conversation barely held sway over spoken German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. The WPF is always an opportunity to predict what the smart set will be wearing to the beaches of Fire Island and Provincetown in the summer months to come. Gone are the soft colored retro-plaid board shorts and butch camo-print cargo shorts of WPFs gone by. Swimsuits are skimpier this year, with the flattering and forgiving square cut in high rotation. The boys favored bold solid colors with bright red leading the pack for both headgear and shorts. Also, the younger guys seem skinnier and less inclined to gym-built bodies than were their slightly older predecessors. Last year’s fauxhawks are now just an embarrassing memory. Sam Champion, weather anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” and his husband Miami artist Rubem Rohierb served as hosts of the VIP reception. Jessica Clark, star of TV’s “True Blood” and “A Perfect Ending” hosted some of the women’s events of WPF. Romance is sometimes in the air at WPF. NGLTF’s event manager Tom Bercu described meeting the love of his life, Claus, at WPF 2010. He surprised Claus with a staged proposal at WPF 2011 in front of 5000 people. Claus teared up listening to his husband describe their three years together.

Prison Flick Showcases Trans Queen Bee Kate del Castillo has memorable turn as inmate with a look and agenda Gary M. Kramer The prison drama K-11 is set in the LGBT unit of the Los Angeles county jail. The cell is “run” by the self-appointed Queen Bee, Mousey (Kate del Castillo), a transgender prisoner. She warns the new inmate, Raymond Saxx, Jr. (Goran Visnjic), not to mess with her and is in cahoots with Sgt. Johnson (D.B. Sweeney), a corrupt, drugfueled guard who is in love with her. Del Castillo steals the film, sinking her teeth into a juicy role. On the phone from Los Angeles, the Mexican actress, who was recently in Miami filming a short for Univision, spoke about making K-11 and playing Mousey. How did you prepare for this outrageous role? Jules [Stewart, the director] could have cast a male actor—that’s an easy way to go. For me, this is was the opportunity of a lifetime. I learned so much about the transgender world, and what trans means. I felt sorry for how ignorant I was about what they go through. From her makeup to her fabulous shoes— Mousey was very distinctive. How did you create her “look”? Love the shoes! This is a transwoman who’s a junkie. We didn’t want to do her makeup like a cartoon—there’s a very fine line. We tried to find something that would make people at her stare at her. She’s attractive, but a little creepy. Mousey is heavily tattooed. Are you heavily tattooed?

Kate del Castillo and D.B. Sweeney Photo Courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures

I am! I have one on my foot--an arrow that means freedom. And a Pi on my left shoulder. I wanted to put an infinity sign, but it didn’t look right. Under my belly button, I have a design I like. And then I have two on my fingers—one says “love”

and one says “live,” and I have “inner strength” on my wrist and “here now” below it. When my father saw my first tattoo, he said “Your body is sacred, when I brought you into this world, you were intact. What did you do?” I have seven now, so he’s like, “Ok, whatever!” Your tough! How was it to play a Queen Bee? When you assert, “I am that Bitch!” I got goosebumps! [LAUGHS]. It’s funny you say that, because for me, it’s difficult to find the feminine side. The masculine part I have; the feminine side, I had to work on. That’s weird, but it’s true. When I wore the makeup and shoes, I just owned it. You have to go deep and not let it affect you. She’s a badass character. She has a duality—you feel sorry for her, and you hate her. It becomes “How far can you go?” and “How far will the director let you go to get this emotion out of you?” We understood what the world means

to Mousey—she feels secure inside the prison. The streets are dirty. In K-11, it’s “I am someone. I rule. I am that Bitch.” Outside, she’s just another junkie working her ass off. Your co-star D.B. Sweeney told me that he was Prince Charming to Mousey’s Snow White. How did you see the characters and their relationship? [LAUGHS]. It’s funny he said that. He’s right in a way. He is really in love—or obsessed—with her. She’s just using him to get the drugs. He knows she has sexual power over him, and she uses it. Why not? Do you have any experience in or with prison? [LAUGHS] No! Never! Do you have a favorite prison movie? Oh! AH! That’s interesting… The one with Sean Penn. Dead Man Walking. And I love Bad Boys and The Shawshank Redemption, too.

Lorna Luft in Concert

Judy Garland’s daughter sings songs her mother taught her J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

Legendary entertainer Judy Garland passed away more than 40 years ago, but it’s taken her younger daughter, Lorna Luft, decades to really get to know her mother. “I don’t think you really get to know your parents until you’re in your forties,” explained Luft, who was just a teenager when her mother died. “When you’re in your twenties, you’re just taking footsteps in the sand, by your thirties, you’re having kids and by your forties, you start looking into your family history. You don’t get to really know them until you travel in their footsteps.” For the past 12 years, Luft has been touring the country with her own account of the relationship between famous mother and daughter, who made her own show business debut at the age of 11. Lorna Luft: Songs My Mother Taught Me is a very personal show full of joy, humor and honesty. She brings the show to West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center for

the Performing Arts on Wednesday, March 20. “If it’s not honest, the audience isn’t going to buy it,” she said. “I think audiences can expect to have a really, really great afternoon of entertainment, (it’s) a mother/daughter story, a journey of how I grew up told through the music that was in our house.” What’s different about being the daughter of an icon, according to Luft, is that “everybody had their own version of the truth, but I was there.” She grew up constantly listening to her mother’s friends, acquaintances and fans telling stories about Garland, but it was up to Luft to be the “editor…especially for my children.” “Everybody has their own history of their family and mine happened to be in the newspapers,” she said with a slight chuckle. Even Luft’s children, now 28 and 22, have experienced the devoted following Garland still commands. She said they are extremely proud, although they feel a sadness they never got to meet their grandmother. “They’re aware of their legacy and of her legacy and aware it’s around them all the time,” said Luft. “You come from what you know and this is their normal.” Luft didn’t always embrace her legacy. She concedes “running away and doing all those crazy things” like dying her hair purple and singing back-up on rock n’ roll albums for Blondie. But, today, she strives to live for the moment. She encourages her children to remember the present as they look toward the future: “It’s wonderful to have a goal, but don’t let that goal overtake you,” Luft said.

Recently, Luft was honored by the Desert AIDS Project with the Steve Chase Community Service Award. A longtime advocate for HIV/AIDS care, she raised millions for research to find a cure. “I lost so many people, it was like Niagara Falls. The AIDS epidemic hit all of us, not just show business, I mean people all around the world. It just hit me and I had to do something. Whenever they asked me to sing, I sang, when they asked me to walk, I walked,” she recalled, “and I never ever was paid.” At the awards ceremony, she shared the stage with AIDS activist Elizabeth Glazer’s son, Jake. Glazer was a hero, she felt, and commended Jake for picking up the torch after his mother passed away, just as she has picked up the torch for her mother.

Q&A With Jackson Carter First out gay contestant on TV’s The Biggest Loser Tony Adams NBC’s long running series, The Biggest Loser, is in its 14th season. It tracks obese contestants who compete to remain on “The Ranch” by losing weight and strategically voting to eliminate one of their group each week. The three personal trainers who act like drill sergeants include an out lesbian, Jillian Michaels, who tries to get into the minds of the contestants and help them vanquish the reasons for their obesity, and one man who is widely rumored to be gay, Bob Harper. The gay allure of the current season goes beyond watching those extremely attractive trainers and is centered on the radiant smile and bright personality of its first out gay contestant, 21-year-old and fresh-faced Jackson Carter of Utah. I spoke with Jackson in February. As of the episode aired March 11, he has lost a total of 98 pounds and continues to survive elimination.

Tony Adams: Jackson, I was a fat kid, so I know what it feels like. Tell me about your experience of growing up fat. Jackson Carter: I endured a lot of bullying because of it. I always had trouble with my weight and it is never over. I still have a lot of work to do. It’s like Jillian Michaels always says, “Everyone has an addiction. We just wear ours on the outside.” I now control the demons that used to control me. You came out young, at 14! How did that happen? I told a friend of mine that I thought I was gay. He told my mother that I had something really important to tell her. She kept asking me what it was until finally I told her. She said “That’s it?” It set a good tone for our relationship. I could not be more thankful.

Wait, aren’t your parents Mormon? My parents were raised Mormon but are not practicing. They let me make my own decision about whether or not to practice that religion. They are amazingly supportive. In school, so much of my happiness had been tied to what everyone else thought of me. I am looking forward to a life where I couldn’t care less what others think of me. Soon after I came out, I heard about OUTreach in Ogden, Utah. It’s a center for LGBT youth. They helped me so much. Now I am a volunteer there and I am on their board of directors. Dish about life at “The Ranch” and your competition! It’s the opposite of what you’d expect. My being gay is almost a non-issue with the other contestants. Having Jillian around — She has a partner and kids — was a real help. At the start, I thought I’d have to “play the game,” but I learned that my biggest competition was myself. Before the show, I was afraid of succeeding. When I was

younger, I was always told that I wasn’t good enough. Now I am unstoppable! Have there been times on the show when you felt the physical challenges were beyond you? Yes. I got very sick early in the show. I passed out, vomited and had feet problems. Then, I got to the point where it didn’t matter. I learned that if you can get your mind out of the way, you can do anything. How has being on The Biggest Loser changed your life as a gay man? In the gay community, you know what it’s like if you are not blonde and ripped. You get lumped in with the bears. Now I am somewhere between the bears and the fit crowd. The big change is that I love my body even with all my skin folds and imperfections. I am still single and in the market. The show has helped me so much. I feel like a freakin’ rock star! Watch The Biggest Loser on NBC Mondays at 8 p.m. EST.

Multiple Carbonell Award-winner Eric Alsford is musical director and veteran producer and Carbonell Award-nominated choreographer Andrew Fiacco directs and choreographs this co-production by the Broward Center in association with DreamChild Productions. Often compared to Rent and Spring Awakening, this Off Broadway musical hit follows five Catholic high school seniors struggling with issues of personal and sexual identity as they get ready to graduate and face the world. From clandestine love to dealing with parental expectations and pressures to fit in, this classic coming of age story is set to an electrifying rock music score. This production contains adult themes and subject matter. The story zooms in on the relationship between Peter (Chris McCabe), a socially awkward loner, and Jason (Jacob Aaron Cullum), the school’s golden boy, and the struggles, trials and tribulations that they go through to keep their relationship alive yet hidden, and how their love affects their friends and the people around them. This includes Ivy (Nicole Piro) whose interest in Jason has increasingly grown and Matt (Mike Westrich) who’s affections for Ivy constantly go unnoticed. Rounding out the cast is Marissa Rosen (reprising her role of Nadia which she performed to critical acclaim at the Broward Center in 2010), David Tracy (Lucas), Ric Ducosin, Lindsey Johr, Kali Rosendo, Laurence London and Angela Moorman. Langle appears as Claire, Peter’s mother; Jimenze as Sister Chantelle; and Boltz as the Priest. The 2013 Broward Center presentation reflects Hartmere and Intrabartolo’s original production and 2007 studio cast recording of the musical, not the revised 2012 Off-Broadway production. The musical has won the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for best score, the L.A. Weekly Award for best original score and best musical, the Ovation Award for best musical and Broadway.com’s Audience Award for best Off Broadway musical. The New York Times says, “This heart-on-its-sleeve tale of youthful sexual and religious angst has served as a talisman for a cult of like-minded fans.” bare is the final performance in the Broward Center 2012-2013 Pride Series co-presented by Broward Center for the Performing Arts and Pride South Florida. 954/462 Tickets are $35 and are available through the Broward Center’s AutoNation box office at 954/4620222 or online at www.BrowardCenter.org. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. AutoNation, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, Sun-Sentinel, Riverside Hotel, Exults Internet Marketing and Weston Jewelers are proud sponsors of the Broward Center.
