vonne Rohrbacher is a very busy business professional in fact I conducted my interview as she was on her way home back to Wilton Manors from Orlando. Despite being “on the road” Rohrbacher was affable and passionate about her work. She has been active in the local community since 1992. “I was a founding member of the GLCC in 1992,” said Rohrbacher. “We started out with brunches at the old Legends Café, reaching out to donors, and raising money. Then a Carol Moran started the fund raising committee and we founded the Stars of the Rainbow Awards. We had the first one in 96 or 97.” While still in business school Rohrbacher she launched Outpages to answer the business needs of the LGBT community, in South Florida. Eventually she sold the business to a San Francisco-based publication. However, from running Outpages she came to know many local business owners – whom are now close, personal friends. However, Rohrbacher’s manifold skills – training employees, management skills, and sales among many other attributes in running a business – come from working in the corporate world. She worked with AT&T who recognized her business savvy and hired her as middle management, training individuals who would them-
selves train other employees. “I went into middle management at AT&T because they thought I might have a knack for it,” she said modestly. “So I’ve combined my degree in business management with my love of training people and small businesses.” Rohrbacher has designed and presented workshops at the FAU Medical Practice Business Manager Track, Palm Beach County Business Development Board, Business Professional Group, Ad Club of Fort Lauderdale, Women in Network, the Florida State convention for the Direct Marketing Association, and many other organizations – even one in the Caribbean. To further her credentials in 2005 she became certified as a consultant and trainer by the Dale Carnegie Training organization. She – with Pride University at the Pride Center at Equality Park – was going to host a 10-week seminar on Saturdays, training small business owners who wish to grow or at least expand their knowledge. However, they decided instead to offer a free introduction to the seminar on Monday June 2. “You don’t have to have an MBA to run a successful small business. Now that I am an expert on training business owners I feel this my way to give back to the community,” said Rohrbacher who has worked for four years as Vice President of Performance and Training for a group of eight companies that includes a franchise system of 150 separate businesses. “I think – in terms of the seminar – we just have to hit the right time to have it.” Therefore, the event on June 6 will allow attendees to take a vote on whether the seminar should go forward, and on what day and time. She is also excited, fees for the seminar will give back to the Pride Center at Equality Park. As Rohrbacher is a long-time Wilton Drive resident, friend, and mentor to some business owners, she is an excellent authority to ask where she thinks the drive “will go” in the future. “I think because of the economic climate people are panicking. Now people are ask-
ing what personality the area should take,” she told SFGN confidently. “The fact we have all these residential units on the Drive, and that a few businesses have failed, does not mean the Drive itself is failing.” Other cities, often have multiple “gay neighborhoods.” For instance Chelsea in New York is “less gay” by some standards because many residents moved to Hell’s Kitchen a little farther north but now claim it as another gay neighborhood. When residents of the Lower East Side felt the area was becoming too commercial they moved to Brooklyn and created new venues for the gay community. Yet, a gay presence still exists in the neighborhoods they left behind. “I don’t see a move away from the Drive. Instead I see a community that has to define what it is they want. Do we want to shop,
dance, dine, patronize galleries, or do we want it to be all of those things, in addition to living there,” asked Rohrbacher, whose query will hopefully assuage the fears of local residents and businesses. She cited her 85-year-old father-in-law as an example of the diversity of our community and how communities and neighborhoods change periodically. “Every morning he takes a walk and he stops and chats with all of the gay men who walk their dogs in the morning,” she added her father-in-law is straight and his gay neighbors are as accepting of him as he is of them. “He loves it here, and I do too.” Please visit GLCCSF.org for information on the June 6 seminar on Business Management with Yvonne Rohrbacher.

ver the years bonnets of all shapes and sizes have appeared at Michael Antol and Jason Sapp’s annual Eater celebration and bonnet contest. One even included live chickens. “If you don’t have a good time at my party you’re not going to have a good time anywhere,” Antol, 61, said confidently. “It’s a lot of fun and we raise money for a good cause.” This Sunday marks the 17th annual Easter Bonnet Contest and Benefit for Shadowood II hosted by partners Michael Antol and Jason Sapp. Each year the event takes place at Antol’s home in Oakland Park. The event started out seventeen years ago as a campy Easter celebration. It took on a new meaning 12 years when Antol decided
to turn the annual party into a fundraiser for Shadowood II, a homeless shelter for people living with HIV/Aids. Besides the bonnet contest the event also features an open bar and silent auction. There is a minimum donation of $20 to attend. Last year they raised $10,000 for Shadowood. “It’s not easy to get a good fundraiser or event,” said Ken Fountaine, executive director of Shadowood. “This has always been well received.” Antol said last year about 300 people attended the event. Jim Haas, 52, of Oakland Park regularly attends the bonnet contest and has won five
times. His bonnets have included giant carrots, giant floating clouds with doves, and even a giant penis. “It’s a good event. I always have fun and it’s for a good cause,” he said. “I always make [my bonnet] a surprise and try to do
something different or off of the wall.” Visit Shadowoodii.org for more information about Shadowood. For those wanting to attend the event visit EasterBonnetContest.com for more information.

FGN has learned that Wilton Manors realtor Denny Patrick Hughes has been re-arrested on grand theft charges, along with an organized conspiracy to defraud at least nine of his realty clients. The State Attorney’s office of Broward County issued a new warrant for his arrest, and Hughes posted a $58,000 bond on March 30, and now faces a first degree felony charge of an organized scheme to defraud, six counts of grand theft in the second degree, and three counts of grand theft in the third degree. Hughes defended himself against these new allegations. “Unfortunately the detective didn’t do his due diligence...it’ll all come out in trial. I’m trying to rebuild my life and move past this. I did not steal anyone’s money,” he wrote in an email to SFGN. While Hughes claims “the state attorney’s office has done nothing but repackage the prior charges,” the new criminal case lists eight additional victims not previously named in his original arrest in December of 2009. That arrest was for one count of grand theft, and listed Ronald Boyle of New York as the victim. The eight new alleged victims include: Paul Warner of Wilton Manors; Jeremy Ferderber of Fort Lauderdale; Luis Benevides of Coral Gables; Linda Faichney of Lauderhill; John Burke of Port St. Lucie; Elizabeth Ellis of Oakland Park; Rochelle Flint of Boynton Beach; and Kenneth Wilbanks of Fort Lauderdale. According to the police report acquired from the Broward County Clerk’s office, Hughes allegedly defrauded the nine victims out of a total sum of $234,780. The probable cause affidavit, leading to Hughes’ new arrest, states: “During the above stated time frame the defendant, acting as a real estate agent/broker working on behalf of the listed victims, did engage in a systematic ongoing course of conduct with the intent to defraud said victims. Defendant did this by representing the victims in their attempt to purchase real estate and in doing so obtained from each
various amounts of money to be deposited into his escrow accounts. In each instance the funds were intended by the victims to be used for the purchase of a home and were to be applied towards that purchase at the time of closing.” Some of the accusations include Hughes “showing a victim a home that was not even for sale and accepting his escrow deposit despite that fact, defendant’s intention to “flip” the home at closing thus presenting a contract to a victim at a higher price than what was asked for by the bank and accepting escrow funds based on the inflated price, accepting escrow funds from a victim when he did not even prepare a contract, and a general disassociation with the victims after obtaining their money.” The investigation was conducted and the report was prepared by Fort Lauderdale Police Department Economic Crimes Unit Detective Michael Grassi. Even after these new accusations, Hughes said he’s not concerned. “I’m not worried..you realize half the clients’ escrow checks bounced - we were never holding their money,” Hughes wrote. At least one person is coming to Hughes’ defense – his current employer, Vincent Clancy of DaVinci Realty Group, in Wilton Manors. “Remember people are innocent until proven guilty in this country. He is employed at my company as an assistant and has shown to be very competent in his duties,” Clancy wrote in an email to Publisher Norm Kent, warning SFGN not to publish “yet another story” about Hughes. Clancy’s threat, copied to the Florida Agenda and private attorneys included an admonition that “Hughes will have my full financial support should he decide to take any legal action against you or your paper.” Editor’s Note: Kent, a criminal defense attorney, had previously represented Hughes in 2009 on a motion to terminate probation, in an unrelated domestic matter dating back to 2006. Kent stated that he considered his representation irrelevant to the newsworthy nature of the new predicament Hughes finds himself in.

uck is the word artist Kenneth Butler described to SFGN on winding up in Wilton Manors. Best known for his skill with functional ceramics and clay, Butler has a long history in the art world. His pieces have been showcased at more than 27 festivals all over the United States, taking home multiple awards and honors. As a graduate from both the University of Mississippi and Nicholls State University in the 90s, Butler had a strong desire to be an art instructor. He worked at the University of Mississippi as a Graduate Assistant for three years and finally as a Graduate Instructor for another three years. “I hoped I’d end up teaching,” Butler tells SFGN. “It is such a rewarding experience to instruct potential artists, but there weren’t
any teaching jobs available. They cut the art programs’ funding from the schools more and more each year. That was when I stumbled into being a full time artist.” Fate obviously had other plans for Butler. In 1997 he moved to Wilton Manors after visiting a friend who lived in town while his pieces were being showcased in a Miami gallery. “I went on a whim and bought a house before the boom started, so I was pretty lucky I ended up here when it was conveniently affordable to do so.” Mangum Gallery is currently showcasing Butler’s functional wall pieces, as well as three dimensional houses with whimsical animal sculptures on top. Butler’s wall tiles are beautifully crafted and painted with striking colors and imagery. He also creates '3968)7=3*1%2+91+%00)6=
gorgeous food safe bowls and plates. Butler is exceptionally skilled with his “spirit” house work and box collection. The sculptures I saw were among my favorite out of the entire collection, especially a brilliant purple vase. “I consider my work to be funky, fun and colorful,” Butler explained. New wall pieces by Kenneth Butler will be
showcased at the Mangum Gallery on Wilton Drive starting April 15 through May 8. The gallery, 2301 Wilton Dr C-4 in Wilton Manors, will host an open wine reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, which kicks off the start of the Island City Art Walk. fter attending an ex-gay ministry, Restoring Hope, at the Lighthouse Community Church in Dania Beach Kevin Schupp attempted suicide. It then took him two years of additional therapy to recover from the shame and guilt the group instilled in him. “It was a disaster for me personally,” Schupp said. “The man teaching the so called ex-gay ministry had no clinical or theological training. He had been trained by Exodus International.” Exodus is largest ex-gay organization in the country with more than 100 affiliated ministries or counselors. “We offer programs for those struggling with interpersonal relationships, homosexuality, sexual addictions, addictive behavior, pornography/internet, emotional dependency and sexual abuse. We also offer support for those of you who have a loved one who is homosexual,” reads Restoring Hope’s website. Schupp is exactly the type of person that Jerry Stephenson, 54, of Fort Lauderdale is hoping to help with his newly formed group, God’s Worthy Creation. “We’re trying to provide a support group for people coming out of the ex-gay movement,” Stephenson said. Stephenson knows all too well what Schupp went through. As a former Southern Baptist Minister, he once belonged to an exgay group, “Worthy Creations” in the late 80s and spent three and a half years there. “I was engaged to be married and they would tell us to kiss and do other stuff in
order to straighten me out,” he said. “Later I was asked to resign because the church couldn’t handle that I struggled with homosexuality. I went through depression and contemplated suicide.” For Stephenson it was a straight minister that helped him accept himself. “He basically saved my life,” he said. “He
kept me from committing suicide.” Schupp decided to join the ex-gay group in 2006 after he came out to his wife of more than 30 years. She suggested he give it a try. “I grew up with emotional issues and they blamed the molestations on me being a homosexual,” he said. “At that time I needed people and that’s why I joined.” During his year of ex-gay therapy he happened to meet a man with whom he developed an emotional connection with. That man later died in an accident. “I was devastated,” he said. “They told me he died because he and I were in an inappropriate sinful relationship, even though there was no sexual contact.” After Schupp’s wife left him he needed a roommate and found one at his church, although he later turned out to be a spy. “They planted him there so he could report on my personal life,” he said. “I felt betrayed and hurt.” Soon after, he left the group, and found another one in Miami to join. “It started all over again,” he said. “But this time I decided to walk away.” Ten days after he left though he attempted suicide. “I just felt like what they told me. I was a
filthy dirty rotten sinner, repulsive to God, an abomination,” he said. “At the time I had rather die than live my life as gay.” Since then things have changed for the 60-year-old. Nowadays the Wilton Manors resident is out and proud and even hosts his own gay variety talk radio show out of Lake Worth called Lunch With Kevin on WPBR 1340 AM from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. “I spent two years overcoming the shame, and guilt they instilled in me,” he said. “They make you hate yourself. Now I realize that God loves me and made me this way.” He now belongs to the Church of the Holy SpiritSong in Wilton Manors. Stephenson is hoping to help others like Schupp, who are conflicted, and have been poisoned by the ex-gay movement. “I want people to accept themselves for whom they are as gays and lesbians and tell them God still loves them. There is nothing that needs to be changed,” he said. “A lot of emotional and spiritual damage is done by these ex-gay groups. A lot of healing has to take place.” Visit DrJerry.net for more information. He can also be reached at JeryLSt@aol.com or 954-632-1529.

Cross-dressing heterosexual men, and cross-dressing homosexual men and women, need to tell us who they are, and specifically what they need in the workplace to feel safe and valued. If they don’t put faces on the issue, their needs will regrettably be unmet.

he National Day of Silence started in 1996 by GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. It’s a day of action in which students across the country take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Across the country the event takes place on college, high school, and middle school campuses. In some cases there are even elementary school participants. On the day students maintain verbal silence either for the entire day or a portion of the day. During the period of silence, participating students sometimes hand out printed cards explaining the nature of their protest and is sometimes supplemented by additional texts or images. The focus of the day is to ending bullying and harassment of students, particularly physical violence and verbal threats. While some organizers focus the mission statement of their Day of Silence to ending institutionalized discrimination, others decide to make their message more encompassing. The Gay-Straight Alliance in Baldwinsville, NY, for example, has made their mis-
sion statement for the Day of Silence “To send the message that hate is not tolerated,” which they consider a more personal and less politically focused sentiment. Most groups, including local ones in the tri county South Florida region, will focus on the day as an opportunity for the participating students to strengthen their own personal awareness of discrimination and increase solidarity with the LGBT community. Some school organizers also create or purchase pins or stickers to put on lockers and t-shirts. Others dress in all black, with rainbow ribbons or gags to emphasize the cause and their presence. In South Florida the major day of silence event is held each year at the Dr. Michael M. Krop High School in Miami. “It’s an amazing event. It’s really moving. Regardless of age or sexual orientation, it’s not to be missed,” said Enbar Cohen, assistant executive director of Safe Schools South Florida. “They really make a big effort. Instead of a few students participating they come out with strong numbers. Teachers, faculty, staff, everyone gets involved.” Safe Schools used to be the local chapter of GLSEN, but decided to start their own group
several years ago in order to attract large grants. They still support GLSEN’s mission. “The Day of Silence is a tool for change. By taking a vow of silence, you’re making a powerful statement about the important issue of anti-LGBT bullying. When you organize others to join you that message becomes louder and louder,” said GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard. Created by then-student Maria Pulzetti, the first event was organized by students at the University of Virginia. “I wanted to do something for BGLAD week that would impact many people at the school and that would be very visible...I knew that if we held panel discussions and events like that, the only people who would come would be the people who already were fairly aware, Pulzetti explained. GLSEN is the nation’s leading education organization working to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. In recent years, the Day of Silence has been reported as the largest one-day student-led grassroots action on LGBT rights in American history.
