Dorian’s Day A message from the publisher on Dorian Norm Kent

D

on’t be surprised if many buildings are boarded up this week and businesses are inaccessible. Please keep your calm, remember that we are all in this together and there is no “I” in the word “team.”

As we prepare this issue, we do not know where and when the storm will actually hit. We do know that everybody is tense as Dorian approaches. But we are a community that has weathered the worst before, and still rebounded, resiliently to create a community and climate of beauty and bounty. Let’s work together these next few days in making sure we can do this again. Help your neighbor, reach out to a friend, tell your parents you’re OK, and make sure you have shelter and your pets have food. Best wishes from us here at SFGN.

Norell is the first ever Latin American who represents for the state of Florida in this competition. There are 21 contestants registered for the pageant that will be held on Sept. 21 2019. Norell was attracted to Mr. and Miss Trans USA because it brings together Trans visibility and activism unlike most pageants. This pageant wants the contestants to have a voice and to use their platform to bring about awareness to social issues that impact the trans community directly. “My mission in life is to inspire young transgender women who feel like they don’t have a voice or they don’t belong or perhaps aren’t good enough. Remember you might stumble along the way and fall down, but it’s not how many times you fall down that matters but how many times you get back up. N

ow we come to perhaps the most interesting biblical passage that suggests David and Jonathan were far closer than the Church and most scholars have officially admitted. To set the scene: David is convinced that King Saul wants to kill him. Jonathan is not so sure; so David and Jonathan concoct a scheme to test Saul’s reaction. When Saul asked why David was absent from some festival meals, Jonathan gave a prearranged answer: because David had asked to attend a family celebration in Bethlehem. “Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan. He said to him, ‘You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse [David] lives upon the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” (1 Samuel 20:30-31.) Saul’s Hebrew insult is quite vulgar. It might be better translated as “You son of a slut!” or “You son of a bitch!” In some early texts, Saul also disparages Jonathan by calling him “women-nourished” or an effeminate man. An early church father, St. John Chrysostom (circa 349-407), Archbishop of Constantinople, translated Saul’s words even more graphically: “You son of common whores, who are men-crazy and run after every man who comes into sight; you weak, effeminate wretch; you nothing of a man,

who lives only to shame yourself and the mother who bore you.” Arguably, Saul is inferring that Jonathan is a woman of sorts. Saul’s outburst goes beyond the indecent to highly sexualized vulgarity. “To the shame of your mother’s nakedness.” In the Old Testament, “nakedness” most often refers to genitalia. “Nakedness” and “shame” were closely linked in ancient Israelite thinking. There appear to be both political and erotic components to Saul’s anger. It seems clear that Saul not only fears losing his throne to David but also the opportunity to establish a dynasty through Jonathan. The suggestion that Jonathan was sleeping with David also is an equally valid interpretation. The context is riddled with homoerotic clues. For example, the Hebrew word for “choose” is the same one used in Genesis 6:2 to describe “the sons of God saw that they [daughters of men] were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose.” And Saul’s statement could be translated from the Greek Septuagint as “for, do I not know that you are an intimate companion to the son of Jesse.” It seems to me that scholars who resist the interpretation that David and Jonathan likely were lovers might be guilty of reading their preferred explanation into the text rather than just dealing with the biblical evidence that has come down to us. Sadly, in my view, many conservative, often evangelical, Christians ascribe their own likes and dislikes to God, rather than accept that God loves us all.

Jesse’s Journal

Convictions

A Cuban Loves Lucy

Jesse Monteagudo

R

ecently I dropped into a Family Dollar store in Columbia, Tennessee, where I noticed a nostalgia magazine by the cash register. Lucille Ball was on the cover. When I mentioned this fact to the twink by the cash register he gave me a blank look. He did not know who Lucille Ball was. This surprised me because, though Lucy Ball died in 1989, before the twink was born, reruns of “I Love Lucy” continue to be shown on television, here and abroad. Three decades after she died, many of us continue to love Lucy, even those who were not on this planet when she was. I first saw “I Love Lucy” in 1957, when I was four years old. That by itself would not be different from the experience of so many others but for the fact that I saw ILL in Cuba, where it was dubbed into Spanish as “Yo Quiero a Lucy.” In the USA, “I Love Lucy” was Lucille Ball’s show. In Cuba the show was about Desi Arnaz; the Cuban who went to America, married that funny gringa and made television history. The traits that made Desi unique and unusual in the U.S. — his rapidfire delivery, his accent (what accent? I thought everyone talked like that!) and his so-called “Latin” temper — made him one of us. I was also a few months younger than Desi Arnaz, Jr., whose cesarean delivery on Jan. 19, 1953 coincided with Little Ricky’s birth. Shortly after my first “Lucy” experience ILL ended its six-year run, Ball and Arnaz divorced (the first divorce I ever heard of), and Fidel Castro replaced Desi Arnaz as the world’s most famous Cuban. In 1962 my family, like Arnaz did 29 years before, moved to the U.S. To my delight, Ball returned to television soon after I arrived,

in “The Lucy Show.” Though Lucy’s character was now a widow she still had Vivian Vance as her best pal; not to mention the writers who made the first show such a hit. In fact, Lucy became such a part of my life that the lack of a Cuban did not keep me from enjoying “The Lucy Show” or its successor, “Here’s Lucy,” though I drew the line at the godawful “Life With Lucy.” Lucille Ball was that rarest of commodities, the female clown. Her television work paved the way for Carol Burnett, Roseanne Barr, Fran Drescher, Ellen DeGeneres, Tina Fey and other funny women. Born in Aug. 6, 1911, Lucille Desiree Ball made over 60 films between 1934 and 1949. In 1940 she married Latin band leader Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha, who was six years younger and who co-starred in her 1940 vehicle “Too Many Girls.” Unfortunately for Lucy, that movie’s title was also a description of their early married life. Desi’s on the road womanizing led Lucy to file for divorce in 1944, but the couple reconciled. Ball’s desire to make Arnaz her TV co-star was based on her determination to save her marriage by keeping him at home. On Oct. 15, 1951 “I Love Lucy” premiered on CBS. With lesser actors, the show might have been a flop: the tale of a silly housewife who wants to have a life of her own in spite of her husband’s opposition had been done many times before. What made the Ricardos unique and immortal was the unique dynamic that existed between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, on stage and off. Though Arnaz was basically playing himself, Ball’s scatterbrained redhead persona was different than the hard-driving

career woman who played her. Those of us who saw Lucy Ricardo from Ricky’s corner thought she was a crazy woman who, week after week, had to be put in her place by her stern but loving Cuban husband. Only in retrospective did we learn to admire Lucy Ricardo’s weekly acts of rebellion, and an assertiveness that Ricky could barely understand or control. Add to the mix the talents of Vivian Vance and William Frawley and the result was six years of magic — nine, if you include the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” One of the most important decisions that Desi Arnaz made as producer of “I Love Lucy” was to tape the show on film before

a studio audience. This preserved ILL episodes for posterity, allowing them to be seen again and again, all around the world. Though I saw my first “I Love Lucy” in 1957, I did not get to watch most of the series until the mid-sixties, when CBS showed reruns on weekday mornings. While other kids spent their summer vacations outdoors, I spent them watching reruns of “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Make Room for Daddy” — both filmed at Desilu Studios — but especially “I Love Lucy.” And while I still related to the Cuban, it was his wife who captured my heart. Though Lucille Ball died on April 26, 1989 (Desi Arnaz died in 1986) she will live forever in reruns.

Kick-off Miami’s art season with ArtsLaunch, today from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. The annual open house held at the Arsht Center offers a fun day of over 50 free activities, including free mini performances, interactive workshops, family activities, farmers market, tours and more. We’ll be there at 2 p.m. for “Hamiltunes,” a sing-along of songs from hit Broadway show coming later in the season. More info at ArshtCenter.org.

Some moms cry. Some moms give hugs. When the Zakar twins told their mother they were gay, she began quoting scripture. “Pray the Gay Away,” a hilarious new comedy running through tonight at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale, is the true coming out story of the handsome, 26-year-old Instagram personalities and LGBTQ activists Michael and Zach Zakar. Tickets start at $37.40 at BrowardCenter.org.

A week ago, we were hunkered down waiting for hurricane Dorian. This week, we’re clear, but once again turning to Netflix for bingeworthy entertainment. Check out the first season of “Styling Hollywood,” featuring Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis, partners in both business and life. These are the superstars who make the magic happen on the red carpet and at home for Tinseltown A-listers. To watch, go to Netflix.com.

We’re generally not big fans of sequels, but how could “It: Chapter Two” go wrong? Stephen King’s evil killer clown Pennywise is back 27 years later and hellbent on tormenting the grown-up members of the Losers’ Club. Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader and Isaiah Mustafa star and Andrés Muschietti directs. We hear the terrifying flick is “extra long,” too. Check local listings for theaters and show times.
