and waited an hour for officers to respond. Panukhyk said the fourth incident took place at 9:43 p.m. when “a group of young people” was attacked near the Pride House. Panukhyk told the Blade that five of the seven people who were attacked “received heavy burns” from pepper spray.” Panukhyk said one of the victims “was swept off their feet and violently beaten up.” “Sadly, police didn’t respond well to the situation,” said Panukhyk, noting officers refused to take reports from the victims. “Ambulance personnel did not want to assist injured persons, so they themselves had to carry their friend to the ambulance cart.” “As of now the majority of cases are filed and the victims are receiving proper medical and legal assistance,” added Panukhyk. “Kyiv Pride is following the cases.” One of the attacks took place after a movie screening that was part of Kyiv Pride. Oleg Rodio Shurigin-Grekalov, a Ukrainian MEMBER

fashion designer, is among those who were attacked. He posted a picture of himself in the hospital after the incident. The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine in a tweet condemned the attack. Panukhyk told the Blade that Kyiv Pride has called upon President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko and other officials to “react promptly, investigate the assaults and condemn the violence on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.” Violence has marred previous Pride celebrations in Kyiv. Nine Kyiv police officers in 2015 suffered injuries when members of a Ukrainian nationalist group sought to disrupt a “March for Equality” that coincided with Pride. A similar march is scheduled to take place on Sunday. “Organizers are calling everyone to watch out and stay safe, but still keep fighting as freedom is our tradition,” said Panukhyk.

everal people who attended a Pride event in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Wednesday were injured during a series of attacks. Kyiv Pride Director Ruslana Panukhnyk told the Washington Blade that members of “far-right groups” carried out four attacks that took place over a period of less than four hours. Panukhyk said a Pride participant “was heavily pepper-sprayed” near the organization’s Pride House in central Kiev at around 6 p.m. Panukhyk said the victim filed a police report and received “medical assistance on the spot.” Panukhnyk told the Blade the second incident took place a “few blocks away from the Pride House” at 9:15 p.m. when “one of the participants was pepper-sprayed by the group of the young perpetrators.” Panukhnyk said the victim “refused to file a report and receive medical assistance.” Panukhnyk said another Pride participant was pepper sprayed at 9:30 p.m. Panukhnyk told the Blade the victim filed a police report

Bisexuals less likely to be out than gay people

By Cameren Boatner

Less than a fifth of bisexual adults are fully out to the important people in their lives. In contrast, 75 percent of gay and lesbian adults say the same. That’s what a recent analysis from Pew Research says. While only 19 percent are fully out, over a quarter of bisexual adults aren’t out to any of the important people in their lives, compared to four percent of gays and lesbians. “The experience of coming out to

friends and family can be complex. Many bisexuals say they haven’t come out to their parents because they didn’t feel it was important to tell them or the subject never came up,” Pew Research said. The vast majority of bisexual adults with partners (88 percent) are in a relationship with the opposite sex, but 43 percent say they are equally attracted to men and women.

Three Connecticut cisgender female high school track runners filed a federal discrimination complaint because they lost to a transgender opponent, according to CBS News. The conservative Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom submitted the complaint for the girls against a statewide policy on transgender athletes. The policy states that students can compete with the gender they identify with, rather than their sex assigned at birth.

“Girls deserve to compete on a level playing field,” said said legal counsel for the law firm Christiana Holcomb to CBS. “Women fought long and hard to earn the equal athletic opportunities that Title IX provides. Allowing boys to compete in girls’ sports reverses nearly 50 years of advances for women under this law. We shouldn’t force these young women to be spectators in their own sports.” The girls argue they lost top finishes in races and possibly scholarships as a result of the policy.

Iceland adds ‘X’ to gender options on official documents Intersex and non-binary people in Iceland now have the ability to change their gender on legal documents, with the letter “X” denoting them neither identifying as male nor female. The Icelandic Parliament passed the Gender Autonomy Act last week, which gives people the right to change their gender on legal documents to correspond with their experienced gender, according to the Iceland Review. It will also allow minors to change their name and gender with a parent’s consent. “The bill aims to respect and strengthen the self-determination of each individual as their own understanding of gender identity is the basis for decision-making regarding their public [gender] registration, as others are not better suited for this,” reads a government press release. “The Act is also intended to safeguard the individual’s right to bodily autonomy and a working group will be appointed to ensure the legal status of children born with atypical sex characteristics.”

Ukraine holds biggest Pride parade in its history

Brazilian Pride march doubles as a protest against Bolsonaro

The largest gay pride parade in Ukraine’s history saw thousands of people marching alongside politicians and diplomats in the capital, Kiev on Sunday. In 2015, protestors at the same event threw flares and injured police officers, according to Reuters. This year, Kyiv Pride Director Ruslana Panukhnyk told the Washington Blade that several Pride participants were attacked by “far right groups” (see page 2). The parade itself was peaceful though as participants were flanked by police, protecting them from the few hundred protestors, and the parade’s organizers were grateful. “We are satisfied with the cooperation with the police. There were some small incidents, but no injuries,” Ruslana Panukhnyk, one of the organizers of the

march said. “The most important [thing] for us is human rights.” Panukhnyk said over 8,000 people attended the parade, surpassing last year’s attendance of around 5,000.

Three million people were expected at the Pride march in Sao Paulo on Sunday, but many showed up not only in support of the LGBT community, but in protest of the anti-LGBT climate. Many Brazilians felt their liberties were under threat, due to the proudly homophobic President Jair Bolsonaro, according to the South China Morning Post. Even as Brazil’s Supreme Court criminalized homophobia, Bolsonaro said it was “an error.” “I came to fight against homophobia and disrespect,” said 31-year-old Monique Barber, who said she was threatened at the beginning of the march, according to South China Morning Post. “We have a homophobic politician and we are seeing things go backwards. at the LGBT march itself,” she said. Since Bolsonaro’s campaign last year, reports of crimes against LGBT people tripled, according to the Washington Post.

LGBT refugees allege abuse in Kenya

Australian anti-gay ex-rugby player asks for donations

Seventeen LGBT refugees allege Kenyan police arrested them in their homes at gunpoint, and held them in jail without charging them with a crime, according to TIME. Kenya has become a safe haven for refugees fleeing from other East African nations, but gay sex is still illegal there, a law upheld in Kenyan court in May. The activist who filed the first petition against the law expected this kind of behavior after the ruling. “We are worried that this is going to embolden people who do not like LGBT people in Kenya and give them justification to act arbitrarily in harming people,” Eric Gitari told the Associated Press. “What will happen is that more and more people are going to closet themselves, they are going to live in

shame and fear.” The refugees told TIME they locked themselves in their apartment in Nairobi, the capital, and are too afraid to go out to buy food due to threats.

Israel Folau, a rugby player who was kicked off the Rugby Australia team over a homophobic post, is asking for donations to a legal fund to contest his dismissal. Folau, 30, a Christian, posted a photo that, among other things, says “hell awaits” homosexuals. He says his dismissal was illegal and religious descrimination, according to the BBC. Folau launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise about $2.1 million for his legal case. “Every Australian should be able to practise their religion without fear of discrimination in the workplace,” he says in the fundraising video, according to BBC. “Even people who don’t share my beliefs have defended my right to uphold and express them. If you want to join this journey with me, to fight for the right to freedom of religion, please donate.”

The BBC says Folau could be suing Rugby Australia and Rugby New South Wales for around $7 million.

Wilton Manors Pride Sees Higher Attendance, More Event Options Damon Scott It might seem like an impossible task to pack more people on the corridor for the “Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade & Street Festival,” but that’s been the reality in recent years. Jeff Sterling, the CEO and chairman of Wilton Manors Entertainment Group, said more than 40,000 people took part in the festivities this year on June 15 — the main day of Pride that features the parade and expo. The event along Wilton Drive marked its 20th year of paying tribute to the gay rights movement and celebrating gay culture. About 40,000 attended in 2018 and a study in 2017 showed about 34,000 people were at the event. Those numbers, said Sterling, don’t necessarily account for people who are inside businesses — bars and restaurants — or under canopies during the parade. So the attendance number is likely even higher. “The expanded programing and attendance was amazing and record setting for our community and showed us that we have finally reached a point in our Pride festival where we have outgrown our traditional format and ways of doing business,” Sterling said. Sterling’s group — a nonprofit — puts on the show and partners with the city of Wilton Manors and the Wilton Manors Development Alliance to pull it off. The extensive preparations include organizing volunteers to secure streets, tent and exhibitor setup and the logistics of security and cleanup. “Our management capabilities were pushed beyond what we were prepared for,” Sterling admits. “There was so much change, newness and growth that all elements of the festival were challenged.” Sterling said that at the end of the day the event and its programming was a success, with only minor glitches that would be expected at any undertaking as large as Wilton Pride. “This is a good problem to have. It is exciting to be part of such growth and planning for our future years,” Sterling said. The parade was larger than last year, which surprised organizers a bit since it is not an election year. The lessons we took away from this year has helped us shape how we are going to deal with a future that includes multiple days, marketing to out-ofstate people to travel here for our activities, dedicated programing to the portions of our community that do not always get serviced adequately such as our black, trans, women and youth communities … and finally how to more successfully use the resources we already have in this diverse community.”

June: Report from HIV Planning Bodies Sean McShee This article reports on three meetings. First, it reports on the meeting of the HIV Planning Council (HIVPC). That body oversees the Ryan White Care (RWC) Program of Broward (RWC-Broward) or RWC-Part-A. Second, it reports on the meeting of the HIV Prevention Planning Council (HIVPPC). That body coordinates HIV prevention. Third, it reports on the meeting of the South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN). That body advises the RWC program of the Florida Department of Health in Broward (RWC-FL DOH Broward), or RWC-Part-B. The HIV Planning Council met on May 23. Joshua Rodriquez reported that Broward has greatly improved in linking newly diagnosed people to care. In 2017, only 42 percent were linked to treatment within 30 days. In the first quarter of 2019, that percentage had increased to 90 percent According to Rodriquez, clients are not using the online recertification for RWC-FL DOH Broward. People can reenroll online, provided their time out of the system has been less than 12 months. Chris Leonard reported on Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA). Three agencies administer HOPWA services: Broward House, Mount Olive Development Corporation, and Broward Regional Health Planning Council. The HIV Prevention Planning Council met on June 6. Broward-DOH staff presented a zip code map of Broward County from AIDSvu.org. Each zip code was shaded to reflect the number of people living with HIV in that zip code. People living with HIV are concentrated along a north-south Axis from Pompano Beach to Dania Beach. They also are concentrated in a narrow and short west to east axis from Lauderhill to AIA. This meeting had an open discussion. Lorenzo Robinson, of the Pride Center, asked if any agencies specifically focused on HIV prevention among black people. According to responses in the room, no agency specifically focuses on HIV prevention among black people. While all agencies provide services to everyone, including blacks, no agency has an HIV prevention program that focuses on HIV prevention among blacks. Two agencies have a Latino focus and one agency has a LGBT focus. Robinson and others worried that black people were getting lost.

In Broward, the epidemic differs among black people. Among all racial groups, including blacks, the majority of cases of HIV arise from gay sex. Only among black people, however, does straight sex emerge as a major risk factor. The South Florida AIDS Network met on June 7. The Florida Department of Health is distributing a survey to RWC clients. The results of this survey will be used to determine future funding for RWC-FL DOH Broward, or RWC-Part-B. Mara Michniewicz, HIV/AIDS section, phoned in a report on HIV prevention in Florida. Michniewicz reported that the state was using molecular surveillance to identify transmission clusters. That surveillance involves analyzing viral DNA to identify people who share related HIV viruses. One person from the audience questioned her about that technique and HIV criminalization. Michniewicz responded that confidentiality agreements prevented the Florida Department of Health from sharing this data. She also said that molecular surveillance cannot detect who passed the virus to whom. It only shows a relationship among individual viral strains. Next SFAN Meeting: Friday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Healthplex, 1000 NE 56th St., Fort Lauderdale. SFAN welcomes newcomers. Next HIVPC meeting: Thursday, June 27, at 9:30 a.m. at Broward Government Center, Room GC430, 115 S. Andrews Ave.

Harvey milk honored with street in paris SFGN Staff

S

tuart Milk was in Paris last week to be present for a street renaming, designed to honor his uncle, our late American civil rights leader. Miriam Richter, a director and counsel for the Harvey Milk Foundation stated that “The Harvey MILK PLACE IN PARIS will be a permanent inspiration for LGBT rights activists and everyday heroes alike who are visible in their lives.” “We continue to keep pushing civil society towards justice, often while working in societies with rising ultra nationalistic movements, and Harvey’s story and courage is our prime ingredient in providing hope and inspiration to all who cherish freedom and equality,” she added. The street renaming was for Harvey Milk Place and Stonewall Place, along with two French heroes. During the ceremony, Stuart Milk was presented with an exact replica of the new Paris street signs for his uncle. The 162 members of Paris City Council, crossing eight different political parties, voted unanimously to bestow the honor upon the late Harvey Milk.

Juan Lopez, the father of Juan Carlos Lopez, told NBC6 that his son, along with the others, have never attacked “any gay people.” “I’m sure 100 percent of that,” Juan Lopez told NBC6, also saying that his son respects “everybody in this community” and that he “loves LGBT.” The alleged attack though was caught on camera. Additionally a bystander, Helmut Estrada, stepped in to protect the gay couple. Estrada told media outlets that he did not know the two victims when he rushed to their defense. According to the Miami Herald after Estrada intervened the four men fled the scene with Estrada chasing after them. They surrounded him, knocking him out. Estrada ended up hitting his head on the concrete as he fell, leaving a pool of blood on the pavement. Estrada was later awarded a medallion from the City of Miami Beach for his efforts.

“The City of Miami Beach Medallion is a special honor usually reserved for acts of bravery, heroism and other significant contributions to our city,” City Commissioner Michael Gongora told SFGN last year. “Helmut’s selfless act of defense warrants this honor and his stepping up and doing the right thing is even more special since he is straight and helped defend two gay victims from an attack related to their sexuality.” For now though Lima is sticking by the four accused. “It’s very easy to jump on a bandwagon when you feel your community is being attacked,” Lima said. “It’s important to look deeper into things when there is a shadow of a doubt.” But there are no doubts from the Office of the State Attorney. “The defendants in the case are not wrongly accused,” Gonzalez-Chavez said.

The State Department in previous statements to the Blade insists it continues to defend LGBTI rights around the world. The State Department in recent months has publicly criticized the anti-LGBTI crackdown in Chechnya and a provision of Brunei’s new penal code that sought to impose the death penalty upon anyone convicted of engaging in consensual same-sex sexual relations. The White House in March announced openly gay U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell will lead an initiative that encourages countries to decriminalize homosexuality. Tremenda Nota, the Blade’s media partner in Cuba, reported the U.S. Embassy in Havana on its Twitter page acknowledged IDAHOTB,

which took place less than a week after police in the Cuban capital arrested several people who participated in an unauthorized LGBTI march. A State Department spokesperson told the Blade last week in response to a request for comment about the postponement of the Tbilisi Pride parade in Georgia that “senior U.S. officials have and will continue to urge the government of Georgia to protect and defend human rights and fundamental freedoms for all — including LGBTI individuals.” The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on Twitter said “dozens of U.S. Embassy Kyiv members participated” in Sunday’s Pride march in the Ukrainian capital.

New York City Hosts World Pride This year commemorates 50 years of LGBT rights, but some believe Pride has become too corporate Tucker Berardi

I

n just a few days we will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots — a defining moment in history in which LGBT people took to the streets to protest oppression and injustice at the hands of the police and the larger reality of inequality they were forced to live every single day. Fifty years later the community is preparing for a parade where thousands will march in the streets of New York City alongside the police forces they once resisted, as well as community organizations, small businesses, and a number of large corporations waving Pride flags and throwing rainbow-clad merchandise to the crowds flooding the sidewalks. It will be a celebration to remember — NYC is simultaneously hosting WorldPride, the first time on American soil and the second in North America’s history. The theme of the dually marketed Stonewall50 / WorldPride 2019 is “Millions of Moments of Pride,” according to the official website. There are celebrations throughout the month of June, more than 50 scheduled events and an estimated 3 million participants. WorldPride will open with a benefit concert on Wednesday, June 26 at 7 p.m., and ticket proceeds will support the Ali Forney Center, Immigration Equality and SAGE, three leading LGBT organizations in NYC, according to the official Pride site. Whoopi Goldberg will host the opening ceremony that will feature speakers and performers, including Cyndi Lauper, DAYA, Ciara, Billy Porter and more. Pride celebrations will continue into the weekend with a number of sponsored events and opportunities to party including a cosplay party, Human Rights conference, sponsored brunches, food festivals, musical performances throughout the city and of course the Sunday Pride parade and festival. Last year’s march had over 550 unique marching contingents alongside over 100 floats — making it one of the largest Pride marches in history. This year the march will feature cast members from the TV series “Pose,” the Gay Liberation Front, The Trevor Project, trans activist, author and veteran Monica Helms, and more. After the parade, thousands of Pride-goers

Ours stands for change.” Pride officials claim that corporate sponsorship is crucial in providing supplies, insurance, security and more to the expensive Pride events and celebrations, and has taken the financial burden off advocacy groups and community nonprofits who have tighter budgets, according to Cathy Renna, spokeswoman for Heritage of Pride who has organized the official Pride March since 1984. Large corporations are also in the minority when it comes to marching contingencies. Most of the 677 groups in the Pride March represent smaller nonprofits and community organizations, Fallarino said, adding that corporations are accepted only if they have an LGBT employee group participating in the march. “I don’t think we’ve lost our way or sold out and turned this into a party or something it wasn’t originally meant to be,” Fallarino said.

ather than write a short, standalone article, I intend to write a series of articles which explore the relationship between David, of David and Goliath fame, and Jonathan, the son of King Saul. Many who have written of David and Jonathan’s relationship (scholars and non-scholars alike) have read into the biblical story their own cultural proclivities and biases. That helps no one. As a lawyer and past litigator, I was trained to put my personal views in a box and delve into each new case afresh. I want to do that with you, the reader. I do not, however, want to bog you down in references, bibliographies, footnotes and/or endnotes. I would like instead to strike a more conversational tone. On this subject, like so many in modern society, we need to talk respectfully with one another. For those possible nerds like myself who do like to follow the rabbit hole of citations and scholarly articles, I refer you to Bruce L. Gerig’s 2012 work entitled “Jonathan and David: A Love Story and Survey of Commentary Interpretations, Textual Evidence, and Historical Background.” Gerig’s work is thorough, balanced, and well-sourced in each chapter. I will rely extensively on Gerig’s handiwork. In this series we will get to know both David and Jonathan a little better by reviewing at least four biblical passages.

1. “When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt” (1 Samuel 18:1-4) (New Revised Standard Version);

He bowed three times, and they kissed each other, and wept with each other; David wept the more. Then Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace, since both of us have sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever” (1 Samuel 20:40-42); 3. “Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan. He said to him, ‘You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? (1 Samuel 20:30); and 4. “Jonathan lies slain upon your high places. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women” (2 Samuel 1:25b-27).

rganizers of Georgia’s first Pride parade that was scheduled to have taken place in the country’s capital on Saturday have postponed it.

Giorgi Tabagari, co-founder of Tbilisi Pride, on Twitter said he and other parade organizers decided to postpone the event in order to join protests against Russian MP Sergei Gavrilov, who spoke at the Georgian Parliament on Thursday, and a police crackdown against protesters who tried to storm the building that reportedly left more than 240 people injured. “Due to (the) current political situation and ongoing protests in Tbilisi, our team had to postpone the march which was planned tomorrow,” wrote Tabagari on Friday. “We have joined the protest at this point and will march once situation calms down.” The announcement parade comes less than a week after the Washington Blade reported the Eurasian country’s ombudswoman asked organizers to cancel a nearly week-long series of Pride events. Hooligans also threatened organizers and a Georgian millionaire called for groups to organize against those who had planned to participate in Pride. “We welcome the decision by the organizers of Tbilisi Pride to postpone the ‘March for Dignity’ planned for 22 June 2019,” said a statement the U.N., the E.U. and the

ast week, Compass, the LGBT community center of the Palm Beaches, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the movement that ignited the LGBT community with its 18th annual Stonewall Ball. Over 500 people attended the event at the Harriet Himmel Theater in West Palm Beach in the heart of CityPlace. In total, the ball raised $30,000 for Compass from its auction and sponsors including Smart Ride, The Beauty Lost, Healthier Lake Worth, and Wells Fargo, according to Compass Chief Development Officer Julia Murphy. Every year, the night raises funds for Compass’ fundamental programs and services, including its youth support groups and HIV/AIDS services. “As we honor the 50th anniversary of our movement, let me welcome you to the official West Palm Beach version of the launch party of New York City World Pride,” announced Compass Executive Director Julie Seaver. “We do have much to celebrate, but we cannot forget that our pride is born out of activism, and our pride is rooted in our community and its resilience and ability to protect and uplift one another. So that is why we’re here tonight. It’s a party, but it’s a party with a purpose.” One of those purposes was to recognize active members of South Florida’s LGBT

community. Pete Stewart from the Palm Beach County School District received the second-ever Michael Brown Memorial Faces of the Community Award and retired County Commissioner Paulette Burdick was honored with the Compass Leadership Award. The Stonewall Ball saw 19 local elected officials including Lake Worth Beach Mayor Pam Triolo, Vice Mayor Andy Amoroso, and Boynton Beach Mayor Steven B. Grant. Throughout the evening, guests were encouraged to participate in a silent auction, which fundraised for Compass. Several note-worthy prizes included a two night stay at The Colony Hotel valued at $2,100, a six night Caribbean Cruise from Celebrity Cruise valued at $4,000, and super chic Prada sunglasses from Mittleman Eye valued at $600. Several local businesses donated items to support the auction.

Celebrity host Randy Fenoli from TLC’s “Say Yes To the Dress” carried VIPs through the night while hosting the group’s reception. There were several gold blazers, black and white cocktail ensembles, and endless red carpet style dresses. To recognize 50 years of the Stonewall Ball, Compass curated a gold theme for the evening that included centerpieces and gold sequin tablecloths. Drag queens of Palm Beach County performed throughout the night, including Velvet Lenore, Melissa St. John, Rianna Petrone, and Miss Palm Beach Pride Kataleya Davenport Dupree “I feel magical,” said Tyreisha Jones, Palm Beach County resident and performer. “I can be my true self and I feel equal along everyone that is here. when I discovered that I was not “on the list.” “Whoops,” they said, “Our mistake; this event is closed to the press.” But wait, they were the ones who invited me. I mean, this was no easy ticket. You had to decrypt a web site and get a magic code telling you where to go. Talking to an AT&T representative in Indonesia was easier. “Our mistake,” they said, “but all is well, you can come in. You just have to pay.” How nice of them. No, that was not going to happen. I was going to cover a news event, not write a check out for a candidate. I would go broke in a month paying to go to every Democratic candidate’s fundraiser. They are up to about 387 people fighting for the nomination, right? Credible and credentialed newspapers cannot, must not, and do not pay for the privilege of covering political rallies or candidates. But they must have an absolute right to do so. If it was a fundraiser, and not a press event, they were negligent in asking me to come. You don’t turn me away at the door when I arrive. Moronic, unless you are looking for a story like this. But as I said, the campaign is young and learning, very polite, but maybe equally inept.

My intention in covering this fundraiser was to do a story on the wealth of support our community showed this candidate with our pocketbooks. It seems huge. If Mayor Pete is milking his gay connection in LGBT communities, then he has an obligation to be more responsive to its free press. He failed here. Still, I want to be fair with SFGN’s readers. You can read my story about the Mayor Pete rally on the blank page adjacent to this editorial. They earned the coverage I gave them. Every word of it. If SFGN’s interview is not thorough enough, you can read about Mayor Pete in all the mainstream publications. He certainly has found time for them. One day, down the road, Mayor Pete, mired in a debate about sewers in a South Bend City commission meeting, will wistfully recall how he came to South Florida on a summer day in 2019. He may remember how he spoke passionately about the principles and programs he wants to champion as America’s next president; how responsive the crowd was. He may. But when Mayor Pete gazes down upon his iphone to read about it, he won’t be able to on www.sfgn.com. He did not have time for us.

As sheriff, I play an important role in protecting the rights of all Broward’s nearly two million residents. As a person of color, I experienced inequality and adversity on my path to serving as the first black sheriff in Broward County’s 104-year history. I know the fight for equality is not a fight for any one group or individual – it is a fight for all Americans, regardless of race, gender, political affiliation, or sexual orientation. For gay Americans, it was sparked by the momentous Stonewall riots, an event which helped advance the cause of equal rights more than any other. But, I recognize the fight for equality is not easy or complete. Join me and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office as we work to advance the cause of inclusion and protect the rights of all our citizens. At BSO, we honor the LGBTQ employees in all areas of our organization, and we want our agency to be as richly cultural as our county. I encourage anyone interested in a career in public safety to join our team. There is no greater reward than the opportunity to serve your community. Aside from a great career, BSO also offers a variety of benefits including competitive salaries, an outstanding work environment, and health and wellness benefits.

‘Art After Stonewall’ exhibit to be a visual tour of LGBT history Steve Rothaus Special to SFGN

P

ride month officially ends June 30, but the celebration honoring Stonewall’s 50th anniversary will continue in South Florida through the beginning of 2020.

“Art After Stonewall: 1969 – 1989,” currently on display in New York City for World Pride, arrives Sept. 14 at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU in Southwest Miami-Dade. The exhibit, featuring works by artists including Keith Harring, Annie Leibovitz and Robert Mapplethorpe, will be on view during Art Basel in December and through Jan. 5, 2020. “The groundbreaking exhibition is the first national museum show of its kind to survey the impact of the LGBTQ civil rights movement on visual culture, during the pivotal two decades after the Stonewall Riots, as the first Pride marches took flight – a bold visual history of 20 years in American queer life,” according to a museum news release. More than 200 works of art will be on exhibit, including plenty of queer erotica. “It’s about gayness, homosexuality. It’s about the erotic. That’s the charm of the show. It doesn’t seek to hide that. It’s one of the driving narratives of the exhibit,” Frost Art Museum director Jordana Pomeroy said. “I don’t want to be reductive and say this is an ‘adult show.’ Some will want to take children,” Pomeroy said. “It depends on how you raise your kids. This is a new world. This show could only happen now.” The exhibit “makes it clear that even though Stonewall happened it was not overnight,” she said, adding that “the history, the narrative of gay art history has paralleled heterosexuality. The women have been marginalized. … It’s a reflection of gay life itself.” Pomeroy said that through the exhibit, “you learn not just about the artists, but of gay life – scholarly views about an emerging queer subculture.”

6 .26.2019

“The exhibition stands on its own. It’s full. It’s going to take people coming back a couple of times to take it all in.” The Frost museum, at Florida International University’s Modesto Maidique Campus, is partnering throughout the run with Unity Coalition| Coalición Unida, a Miami-based Hispanic LGBT-rights group. Unity Coalition’s Oct. 12 gala benefit will be held at the museum during the organization’s ninth annual Orgullo arts festival celebrating Hispanic LGBT pride. One featured artifact that will resonate strongly in South Florida: Artist Martin Kreloff’s original poster for Miami’s first White Party AIDS fundraiser at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in 1985. “Art After Stonewall: 1969 – 1989 is a retrospective whose purpose is to illuminate how queer artists reacted to Stonewall and the political struggle for equal rights that ensued. Tragically, the AIDS epidemic is a central aspect of this struggle, and the piece of mine that is included in the exhibit illustrates my nascent activism against this threat,” said Kreloff, who lived in Miami during that period. “When I moved back to Miami in 1984, I was relocating from San Francisco, which of course was Ground Zero of the AIDS epidemic. I had witnessed first hand how the disease was mowing down young men in the prime of their lives. The epidemic had yet to get a foothold in South Florida, and when I tried to sound the alarm, the Miami Chamber of Commerce’s response was that the situation was too much of a political hot potato to address with any seriousness or funding,” Kreloff recalled. “The only sane response to this apathy was for the gay community to rally and

raise their own funds and create their own institutions to address this threat to our very existence. I am very proud to have been involved in the creation of the very first White Party, and am honored to have my poster for the fundraiser included in this exhibit.” Kreloff, who now lives in Las Vegas, has an important message “for younger LGBTQ Miamians” interested in this exhibit:

WHITE PARTY AT VIZCAYA, 1985: Artist Martin Kreloff’s original poster for the first White Party AIDS fundraiser in 1985 at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in Miami.

“I invite you to come see how queer artists responded to the oppression of those times, and how we struggled to create a world where one could live a queer lifestyle with relative ease. My hope is that this next generation understands that we can never take these new-found liberties for granted all it takes is a change in the political winds, and all this progress could be whisked away.”

IF YOU GO “Art After Stonewall: 1969 – 1989” runs Sept. 14 through Jan. 5, 2020, at Florida International University, 10975 SW 17th St., Miami. The exhibition was organized by the Columbus Museum of Art and features seven sections: Coming Out, Sexual Outlaws, The Uses of the Erotic, Gender and Body, Things are Queer, AIDS and Activism, and We’re Here. The show was curated by the artist and art historian Jonathan Weinberg, with Tyler Cann and Drew Sawyer. The exhibit is made possible at the Frost Art Museum FIU by Bank of America and the Funding Arts Network. Additional support has been provided by Our Fund, an LGBT community foundation, and the Art after Stonewall Circle of Friends.

Gay and Christian Loving Your Neighbor

TREATMENT FOR: ▶ BACK PAIN ▶ NECK PAIN ▶ JOINT DISEASE ▶ HIV NEUROPATHY ▶ HEADACHES ▶ SHINGLES ▶ PRP AND STEM CELL THERAPY

Dear Editor, At Church of the Holy SpiritSong, our tagline is #loveneighbor, and that’s exactly what we seek to do. Not such an easy task, being a Christian church in the heart of South Florida’s LGBTQ Community. You would think that most would be friendly to a welcoming and affirming church that truly loves and cares for all, regardless of the many differences that so finely shred our wonderful world (sexual preference, orientation, skin color, culture, and the list goes on). But the work here in Wilton Manors has been difficult, even exclusionary to our work. One year we were told that if we wanted to sing at one of the local pride festivals, we could sing “uplifting” songs, but nothing Christian in nature. It’s a testimony that tells the story of the hurt and hate that has been dished out to our sisters and brothers for so many decades in churches that have so adamantly professed that they love all, welcome all, and then use words such as “You’re just not a good fit for our church.” I’ve heard more stories than I care to recall in which worship leaders were outed and ejected from the church in the middle of the service. The hurt is deep, and the wounds are scabbed over, but far from healed. The Church Universal needs to do a better job of loving all. With all the rejection that we have endured within our own community, one place has always been an oasis of safety and security for our church. The Pride Center at Equality Park, from which Church of the Holy SpiritSong has leased since October of 2005, has given us a place to call home. Formerly at the GLCC on Andrews Avenue, and now in the Auditorium on the campus at Equality Park, our church serves as a welcome and safe space where LGBTQ Christians are free to worship God. When we first moved into Equality Park in February of 2009, The Pride Center helped in part to provide our beautiful worship space, while defending time and again why a church could lease on their campus. We enjoy a cohesive and unified community on the campus, working closely with our business partners such as SOPHIA, Challenge Fitness, and Congregation Etz Chaim with whom we willingly and lovingly share space and equipment. Church of the Holy SpiritSong celebrates our 20th anniversary this August. The Pride Center has been a part of our history for fourteen of those twenty years, and for that we are thankful. Carry on, Pride Center. You’re doing great work!

Proposed Alabama Law Bans Masturbation ‘Every sperm is sacred’

Fred Fejes

A

bill now before the Alabama State House Judiciary Committee makes male masturbation a Class A Misdemeanor carrying a jail sentence up to one year and fines up to $6,000. Proposed by Rep. Lloyd Micklemann (R-Cullman County) and co-sponsored by 30 other legislators, the law is meant to be a companion piece to the recently approved measure effectively banning abortions in the state. “Up till now, the focus has been on women and the protection of the human fetus. This proposed law opens up a new front in the battle to protect human life. It is time we recognize that men have an equal responsibility,” Micklemann said. Enforcement of the bill’s measures presented a major challenge. At first, the proposed law required state-licensed physicians, nurses and other medical personnel to ask about the masturbatory practices of their male patients. Initially if found they were masturbating, a warning would be issued. The patients would sign a statement that they were told about the law’s penalties. If they continued, they would be reported to the state and could be arrested. However the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the state’s major medical group, strongly objected to making the physician-patient relation the focus of enforcement. They were joined by national medical groups including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Osteopathic Association.

The enforcement provisions were changed to instead charge teachers, coaches and other personnel in state-funded schools with the task of monitoring the conversations and actions of all male students. As with the previous enforcement provisions, students found masturbating would be issued a warning and, upon continued acts of masturbation, would be reported to the state. At state-funded colleges and universities, teachers, coaches and other personnel including dormitory residents advisors are included in this provision. Also, the law will be included as part of the state sex education curriculum. The proposed law also allows for citizen reporting of acts of masturbation. A man talking about masturbating would demonstrate probable cause under the law and be subject to arrest. The Alabama chapter of Americans United For Life assisted in the writing of the bill. On a national level, this organization has helped write abortion laws in many states. Local chapter spokesman James Tallmure says the bill may serve as a model for legislation in other states. “I have been in contact with legislators in Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi and Florida. They are all watching developments here closely. According to Tellmure, this is a pioneering effort and the specific provisions of the bill are a work in progress. “But the effort is just as important as the banning of abortion. Just as we uphold the sanctity of human life with women, we must now fight for the lifegiving potential of male sperm. Every sperm is sacred.” As with the new Alabama law on abortion, many local and national pro-choice and

women’s groups strenuously objected to the overall intent of the bill. NARAL Pro-Choice America, Catholics for a Free Choice, the National Abortion Federation, the Abortion Access Project, Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and Life and Liberty for Women all issued statements condemning the proposed bill. On the other hand, some pro-choice advocates welcomed how the law targeted men. “Now men must recognize that the pro-choice fight is their fight,” said Jane Lindeman of NARAL. New to the battle are groups representing LGBT people. The National Lesbian and Gay Task Force, the Human Rights Fund and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund all issued statements condemning the bill.

“Masturbation, both male and female, is a fundamental human right that cannot be infringed upon by the state,” said James Hathmore of the Human Rights Fund. Local Alabama LGBT groups are organizing protests. One form of protest is group masturbation sessions. Several gay bars in Birmingham and Mobile have already conducted such protests. The proposed law is expected to be approved by the Alabama State House Judiciary Committee and prospects of passage by the full Alabama House and Senate are good. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a statement saying that she would sign the bill when it comes to her desk. “Once again Alabama will be leading the nation on this issue,” she said.

Review: ‘Priscilla’ is a Campy Romp in the Outback J.W. Arnold If you’re looking for a way to celebrate the last few days of Pride Month and you’re not headed to New York City for Stonewall, you can find plenty of campy, gay fun at the Broward Center, where Slow Burn Theatre Co.’s production of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” runs through Sunday. The 2011 Broadway adaptation of Stephan Elliot’s 1994 indie film is the story of three Sydney drag queens who embark on a journey of self-discovery aboard a pink bus (dubbed “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”) for a performance in the heart of Australia’s rugged outback. Mitzi (George Pellegrino), whose real nickname is “Tick,” accepts the invitation from his ex-wife and resort manager Marion (Shelley Keelor) in order to finally meet his 8-year-old son, Benji (Braydon LabgoldCarroll). He enlists his friends Bernadette (Michael Ursua), who has finally undergone the “chop,” and ditzy Felicia/Adam (Kyle Laing) to join him on the trek. Along the way, they confront their personal demons, roughneck ranchers and bewildered Aboriginals, accompanied by a soulful Greek chorus of divas (Carla Bordonada, Nyomi Braaf and Rebeca Diaz) and a high-heeled chorus of dancing paintbrushes, cupcakes, psychedelic Gumby dolls and more. All perform to a toe-tapping musical score heavy on ‘70s disco hits and ‘80s gay anthems and backed up by music director Anthony Campisi and a six-piece band. There’s even an obligatory disco ball hanging from the ceiling of the Amaturo Theater. Under the direction of Patrick Fitzwater,

who doubles as choreographer, the cast offers uniformly energetic and simultaneously sincere performances, but let’s be honest, the real stars of the show are the outrageous costumes and flamboyant production numbers. Oh, and don’t forget that bus! We’ve heard she’s a real diva. If you remember the movie, all the classic looks are there — the flip flop dress and rubber wigs, colorful jumpsuits and flowered helmets, 3-foot-tall ostrich headpieces and even Bernadette’s scary slinking lizard. For the Broadway production, Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardner took home a Tony Award with the addition of the aforementioned paintbrushes, cupcakes and more, all adorned in lots and lots of sequins and lamé. The rented costumes used in this production are all replicas of those designs. A team of expert backstage dressers, led by costume supervisor Rick Peña, had the most challenging roles of all, keeping dozens of quick changes under control. (The show requires more than 600 costumes.) Unfortunately, the glitz and glamour often overwhelm much of the character development that was a centerpiece of the film, but that’s OK for a piece of feel-good theatrical fluff like “Priscilla.” The lessons of self-love and acceptance are never lost and, given the current state of public discourse in this country, a much-needed escape from the inescapable poison on TV. Only a few performances remain, so don’t miss this fun and entertaining show. Get your tickets today and don’t forget to wear your dancing shoes.

Slow Burn Theatre Co. presents “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical” through Sunday, June 30 at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets start at $47 at BrowardCenter.org.

OPPORTUNITIES BUYERS AND

Review: Choruses Offer Historic Performance in Lauderhill

SELLERS

J.W. Arnold

T

his month, the global LGBT community has and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the seminal June 28, 1969 Stonewall riots in a variety of ways: marches and rallies, festivals and parties, lectures, exhibitions and concerts. In South Florida, the three largest gay men’s choruses united for the first time last weekend in Lauderhill and Coral Gables to present the regional premiere of a newly commissioned cantata, “Quiet No More,” also performed in 17 other cities. It was truly a historic occasion as the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), Miami Gay Men’s Chorus (MGMC) and Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FLGMC) took the stage before an enthusiastic audience of nearly 1,000 at the sparkling Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. But, the loudest cheers were yet to come. In addition to the sonorous history lesson, the performance was a long-awaited breakthrough in the healing process between the South Florida and Fort Lauderdale choruses. GMCSF was formed a decade ago after a split over administrative and artistic differences with the former board and conductor of FLGMC. Both groups are now under new leadership and thriving and, as GMCSF artistic director Harold Dioquino announced from the stage, their bonds now outweigh their conflicts. “Quiet No More,” commissioned by the Gay Men’s Choruses of New York City and Los Angeles, and co-commissioned by GMCSF and 21 other groups across the country, is an unusually eclectic work, eight movements composed by six different composers whose work spans equally diverse styles and techniques. Together, the movements and interspersed first-person narratives tell the story of Stonewall — before, during and after. Michael Shaieb’s “Prologue: It Was the Day” and “The Only Place You Can Dance” set the scene of a tense, underground LGBT existence in Greenwich Village living with the constant threat of police raids. His

movements evoke that scene with hi-hat and dance rhythms. Our Lady J (“Transparent,” “Pose”) describes the patrons of the bar — mostly drag queens and transgender women — who would finally have their resolve tested and rise up in “Glorious Beauties.” “Gotta Get Down to Downtown,” again by Shaieb, is a choral tone poem that utilizes modern techniques to create an ethereal telling of the chilling riots that break out. Ann Hampton Callaway, jazz artist and beloved singer of the theme from TV’s “The Nanny,” contributed a touching ballad, “What if Truth is All We Have?” and Jane Ramseyer Miller’s anthem, “Speak Out!” concludes the work with a rousing charge to remember those unexpected activists and continue their fight. Each of the three chorus conductors took individual movements and led the singers and six-piece band. MGMC’s Anthony Cabrera took the high-energy, disco-infused movements, while FLGMC’s founder Dr. Gary Keating chose the lush ballads in between and GMCSF’s Dioquino deftly tackled the most technically demanding movements. The music was punctuated throughout with powerful archival images that — 50 years later — made the struggle of those drag queens, transgender people and street kids all the more personal to an audience that largely came of age in the decades after. Keating used a poignant moment at the microphone to describe gay life in South Florida in the years following the riots and how an encounter in New York City inspired him to form the first chorus in the region in the mid-1980s. Ultimately, it was the concert encore, “Over the Rainbow,” the LGBT anthem made famous by the iconic Judy Garland, that finally brought many in the audience to tears. The soaring melodies and rich harmonies of Harold Arlen’s classic song were a reminder to all that the LGBT movement has come far in 50 years, but there is still much work to be accomplished.

Queerly Digital LGBT cinema on DVD/Blu-ray, a monthly column

David-Elijah Nahmod

Some Queer Classics for Pride elcome to Queerly Digital, a monthly column for cinema lovers from across the LGBT spectrum. All titles are available on DVD, Blu-ray, streaming platforms, or all three. This column will as the months progress, be sure to include titles which honor all LGBT experiences.

Just in time for Pride, Shout Factory releases four classic queer titles on Blu-ray. The films represent a wide variety of genres, from a romantic comedy to a Tennessee Williams drama, to a splashy musical and a drag extravaganza. Produced in 1995, Beeban Kidron’s “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar” attracted a good deal of attention upon its initial release due to the casting of straight macho men Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes as gay men in drag. Though the film received mixed reviews at the time, it was a moderate success at the box office, pleasing the crowds who came out to see it. “To Wong Foo” is the story of Vida (Swayze), Noxeema (Snipes) and Chi Chi (John Leguizamo), three New York drag queens who embark on a road trip to Hollywood, where they plan to compete in the Drag Queen Of America pageant. Along the way their car breaks down, and they find themselves stranded in Snydersville, a run down hick town in the middle of nowhere. During their two-day stay in the town they quickly bond with many of the townspeople, often involving themselves in the townspeople’s problems. Vida, for example, comes to the aid of battered wife Carol Ann (Stockard Channing), while Noxeema befriends lonely widow Clara (Alice Drummond). The girls also provide a number of the local ladies with makeovers. The film’s opening scene, set at a New York City drag pageant, is great fun, and includes cameos from many of the city’s biggest drag legends, such as Coco Peru, Candis Cayne, Hedda Lettuce and The Lady Bunny. Gay icon Quentin Crisp is briefly glimpsed as a pageant judge, while superstar RuPaul has a small role as the winner of the previous year’s pageant. There’s also an amusing post-pageant cameo from Robin Williams. The film includes a bizarre subplot featuring Chris Penn as a homophobic sheriff who’s looking for the three heroines. Though he’s presented as an idiotic half-wit and is meant to provide comic relief, his constant barrage of anti-gay remarks are not in the least bit funny. In one particularly offensive scene, the sheriff sits at a bar, rambling on and on about all the things he thinks gay people do. It’s hard to believe that gay viewers would find his tirade amusing. But for the most part, “To Wong Foo” is an enjoyable mixture of comedy and drama. The three leads look fabulous, though it’s never explained why they remain in drag after they exit the stage. And you have to hand it to the guys — they really dived into their characters, playing their glamorous roles with gusto. The blossoming friendship between Vida and Carol Ann is quite moving and includes some nice commentary about tolerance — Carol Ann notices that her new friend has an Adam’s apple, and counts herself lucky to have found such a friend. When it’s time for the girls to continue on their journey, Vida and

46

Carol Ann have trouble saying goodbye. These two characters give “To Wong Foo” its heart. While not a great film, “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar” is a good one, and, with the exception of the scenes involving the Penn character, the film is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Shout Factory’s Blu-ray release of the film includes a making of documentary, which includes interviews with auteur Kidron, gay screenwriter Douglas Beane, and John Leguizamo. Paul Rudnick’s “Jeffrey” (1995) is a most unusual romantic comedy — it’s about AIDS. Steven Weber stars as the title character, a gay man in New York who swears off sex out of fear of the disease. As soon as he takes his vow of celibacy, he meets his soul mate, the HIV positive Steve (Michael T. Weiss). Their on again, off again flirtation forms the core of the story, which offers some insightful commentary about life during the epidemic while also being screamingly funny. Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart steals the show in an Oscar worthy supporting role as Sterling, a wealthy, and quite flaming designer who madly loves his HIV positive chorus boy boyfriend (Bryan Batt). Sterling tries to convince Jeffrey to follow his heart – Sterling holds nothing back, delivering zingers that are worthy of “Will and Grace.” The film also includes several hysterical fantasy sequences which let viewers into Jeffrey’s head — the funniest of these sees Jeffrey’s straight-laced parents trying to involve him in phone sex! 1968’s “Boom!” written by the great gay playwright Tennessee Williams based on his play “The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore,” is a bizarre opus starring 36 year-old-Elizabeth Taylor as a 60ish character, and 43-year-old Richard Burton as a character meant to be

played by a man in his early twenties. Openly gay actor/ playwright Noel Coward offers support as a man known as The Witch Of Capri — this role was originally offered to Katherine Hepburn, who declined. So Coward, a gay man, is actually playing a female role. The story doesn’t make too much sense — super rich Taylor, dying of an unnamed disease, is visited on her private island by struggling poet Burton, though the reason for his visit is vague. Though “Boom!” doesn’t offer much of a story, it’s a wild campfest, featuring lots of hammy overacting and Taylor’s delightfully outrageous outfits. Shout Factory’s Blu-ray includes a commentary track by legendary filmmaker John Waters, who counts “Boom!” among his favorite films. And finally, Shout Factory offers the notorious bomb of a musical “Can’t Stop The Music,” a highly fictionalized retelling of the formation of Village People, the disco era supergroup who were named after Greenwich Village, New York’s popular gay neighborhood — group members presented themselves as symbols of gay masculinity. So how bad is the film? Actually, it’s not bad at all. It’s just a silly, plotless tale of a young man (Steve Guttenberg) trying to make it as a music producer with the help of his roommate (Valerie Perrine). Though the band is given little screen time, the songs are good and the musical numbers are splashy. Guttenberg and Perrine play off each other well, delivering their fast talking lines with tongues firmly planted in cheek. Unfortunately, “Can’t Stop The Music” harmed the careers of producer Allan Carr (“Grease”) and Perrine. More’s the pity. Shout Factory’s Blu-ray includes an extensive interview with Village Person Randy Jones. Happy Pride!
