“Despite five decades of progress, however, in the United States equality is not within reach, and often not even within sight, for all persons impacted by violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” Madrigal-Borloz said. “In general terms, they are poorer, less educated, less sheltered, and incarcerated more often than their cisgender, straight counterparts.”

While all members of the LGBT community face increased hostility and attempts to roll back hard won rights, none have faced more state-sanctioned hate than members of Florida’s trans community. Now the United Nations is taking notice and weighing in. Victor Madrigal-Borloz is the United Nations Independent Expert on Protection Against Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. During his 10-day U.S. tour, he came to South Florida and met with members of Transinclusive Group. They shared some of their successful powerbuilding initiatives, as well as the mounting social and legal challenges facing the trans community.“Speaking with the United Nations was so important because it broadens our work on

The Biden administration has taken steps to extend protections for the trans community through executive orders and rules at departments including Education and Agriculture. President Biden said the real threat, at the moment, is in statehouses across the country, including in Tallahassee. “I am deeply alarmed by a widespread, profoundly negative riptide created by deliberate actions to roll back the human rights of LGBT people at state level. These include deeply discriminatory measures seeking to rebuild stigma against lesbian and gay persons, limiting comprehensive sexual and gender education for all, and access to genderaffirming treatment, sports, and singlesex facilities for trans and gender diverse persons. The evidence shows that, without exception, these actions rely on prejudiced and stigmatizing views of LGBT persons, in particular transgender children and youth, and seek to leverage their lives as props for political profit.”Transinclusive Group’s Deputy Director, Nic Zantop, said the problem is especially acute in Florida.“The fight for trans and LGBTQ+ rights is universal, and here in Florida our transgender siblings face widespread discrimination and threats to safety, a profound lack of affordable housing, challenges accessing healthcare and gender affirming care, and seemingly ceaseless legislative and politically motivated attacks on our community and our right to exist authentically.”

A Kansas teacher sued her school district over her suspension for purposefully misgendering a student and reached a settlement for $95,000. Pamela Ricard had been informed by a school counselor at Fort Riley Middle School and the student’s classmate that he preferred an alternate name and he/him pronouns. LIBRARY DEFUNDED OVER LGBT BOOKS

Louisiana’s State Superintendent of Education has instructed school administrators to ignore federally proposed protections for trans students at this time. In June, the Biden administration released proposed changes to Title IX Regulations, which included protection from discrimination for LGBT students.

A Michigan public library was defunded over the LGBT publications on its shelves, but donations from around the world, including from best-selling author Nora Roberts, have given it new hope.Atthe beginning of August, the west Michigan town voted against the tax on property owners that contributed to 84% of Patmos Library’s annual budget, according to Bridge Michigan. The campaign to end the tax was organized by community members upset by the library’s LGBTQ-themed novels, including the graphic novel “Gender Queer: A Memoir.”

State Superintendent Brumley reacted by sending a letter to school and athletic administrators stating that they are not required to abide by the proposed federal regulations. Louisiana had recently enacted “The Fairness in Women’s Sports Acts,” a law requiring that students of all ages participate in sports based on their sex assigned at birth.

Even though the government had announced it would cancel or postpone the Pride event, thousands of religious and right-wing opponents of the European gay Pride celebration Belgrade hosted a demonstration across the Serbian city. The annual EuroPride march takes place in a different European city each year. A common fan chant that has long tarnished Mexico’s top-flight soccer match must be eliminated by the nation’s millions of soccer fans, activists stated according to Reuters.Despite the fact that Mexico’s top soccer organization has implemented a “zero tolerance” policy against the long-standing homophobic chant yelled by fans by prohibiting ticket sales and requiring teams to play in empty stadiums, including for a World Cup qualifying match earlier this year, many fans obstinately persist. “As Mexicans, we’ve even been known to export this chant,” said Andoni Bello, founder and head of national LGBT soccer selection known as Tri Gay, speaking at to Reuters. He lamented that it is now heard at professional games in Brazil and the United States. The exact cry calls for supporters to yell “puto,” which, when translated literally, means “man prostitute,” whenever a member of the other side attempts a goal kick.

A petition condemning a brochure that labels homosexuality as an “acquired psychiatric disease” was delivered to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party with roughly 51,500 signatures from a group of sexual minorities and their allies. The leaflet was given out at a session of party MPs from a group with beliefs similar to those of Shinto Seiji Renmei held in a Tokyo hotel (the Shinto Association of Spiritual Leadership). The leaflet included quotes from remarks delivered by academics at universities during study sessions arranged by the group, which was composed of thousands of people connected to Shinto shrines all around Japan. “The statements [made in the pamphlet] are clearly discriminatory and outrageous,” said Soshi Matsuoka, 27, who heads Fair, an organization that provides support to sexual minorities, to The Asahi Shimbun.

The Transplant Games of America is a biennial event that brings together transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, individuals on the waiting list, caregivers, transplant professionals, supporters, and spectators. Produced by the Transplant Life Foundation, the Transplant Games “honor the lasting legacy of donors who gave the ultimate gift of life, highlight the need for and importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation, celebrate the success of transplantation, and increase the national and state registry numbers.”

Louis Levin of Wilton Manors, a 2018 heart transplant patient, took part in the recent Transplant Games of America. “The transplant games are for anyone who has received a lifesaving organ to participate in,” Levin said. “It is open to those in the USA and abroad. Many donor families participate in some of the activities and tell their stories. Thousands of people attend and participate in sports, poker, cornhole and others. I was blessed to win two silver medals in men’s doubles bowling and mixed doubles bowling. I also received an honorary medal in the 2k.” Levin also competed in poker, though there he did not win a medal. Although the Games were not without its troubles – a participant in the swimming competition suffered a heart attack, canceling that event – they were successful.

When Rabbi Noah Kitty stepped down as Spiritual Leader of Congregation Etz Chaim, many observers thought that the 48-yearold Synagogue would not survive. Louis Levin, CEC’s newly elected president, and other Board members disagreed. “We had too much to offer to the community and we are not done,” Levin said. “We have enough in the funds to last at least another year and we have to give it a try.” Turnout for Friday Night Services have been almost as good as they were during Rabbi Kitty’s last year, and Synagogue leaders look forward to a productive High Holy Days season. In this new spirit, the Board of Congregation Etz Chaim hired a new spiritual leader. Marcia Weinstein’s belief in “audacious hospitality” and “radical welcoming” is evident in her engaging services, and her desire to create a Kehillah Kedoshah [holy community]. Congregation Etz Chaim holds Friday Night Services at 8 p.m. at the Pride Center Auditorium, 2038 N. Dixie Hwy, in Wilton Manors.

A special event honored people who lived 25 or more years with transplanted organs. “The Transplant Games gave me an opportunity to meet with other people that are in the same situation as me in regard to transplant and hear their stories of their journeys. But for me the most moving by far are the donor families; families who lost their loved ones and who made the decision to donate their loved ones’ organs.”

Ate Nathan’s hot dogs and French fries in Brooklyn, had steaks at Peter Luger’s, Italian food on the east side at John’s, and Trattoria midtown, a must. All with friends from Dodger town across the country who met and meet annually. So special! Yeah, I should have caught that line drive down the first baseline in 1995, Wayne Canastra!Delisfrom the East side and too many good restaurants to mention them all. Knishes, too. And the opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum. Quite the Labor Day trip. Been to the Met, MOMA and more museums than I can count. A home run of a journey.

Justin Wyse, our sales and marketing manager, shall become the Associate Publisher.Mytrip into the sunset will include establishing the SFGN Foundation, crafted to support young LGBTQ journalism in their schools. This necessary step allows me the freedom to work on continuing medical issues which now compromise my physical and cognitive capacities.

Relived the Great Lawn, Simon and Garfunkel and Gay Pride rallies. Sharing with partner John from Lakeland, and Brian from Virginia, how the memorable past is now the forever present.

Fortunately, between my law partner and the newspaper staff, both Kent and Cormican, P.A., and SFGN will continue to function daily and weekly, with the highest level of proficiency and professionalism. However, I won’t be hang gliding anytime soon. LGBTQ journalism is necessary to tell your unique stories which give meaning and purpose to our lives. They tell quiet tales of individual growth, overcoming adversity, and daring — not just treading, but sailing through waters and tides your friends and family told you that you could never negotiate. By being true to yourself, you proved the doubters wrong. “Know the truth,” wrote Shakespeare years ago, “and it stands to reason, as surely as the night follows the day, that thou canst be a liar to no other man.” I have to now face the truth that I am no longer who I once was, or want to be. Medical compromises have dictated otherwise. “So it goes,” wrote The Little Prince, “so it goes.”

I have been to amazing Broadway theaters, and watched Aaron Judge’s 54th homer at Yankee Stadium, the edifice of Baseball! And seen the first place Mets play the first place Dodgers at Citi Field while wearing their World Series rings from 40 years ago. And still own a 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card, not a 10 like the one that sold for 12 million a week ago, but mine nevertheless. What a privilege to have that and so many others to treasure for decades. Been to the Village and heard Billy Joel. Listened and remembered as the Traveling Wilburys has sung “End of the Line;” where John Lennon lived and died. Imagine. The magic of music and unknown partners dancing in Times Square at midnight. It’s all steps and notes from the Hershey’s store, the Empire State Building and Broadway. From 5th Avenue shops to NY subways, to South Florida and Key West’s golden sunlight, sailboats, and shores, my life has been a roller coaster of energy and enthusiasm and a circle game; enjoying loving days and spectacular nights, great opportunities and marvelous friends, sharing for 20 years a newspaper that has illuminated our lives, loves, and losses.

These past two weeks I have been blessed with loving friends and a trip to my birthplace, my New York home. I have walked on the Coney Island Boardwalk, ridden ponies in Central Park, and been to its lakes, ballyards and the zoo.

John Hayden Love, laughter, sadness, and tears all blended together as nearly 300 people came out to celebrate the life of Leo Peralta, the partner of Wilton Manors City Commissioner Chris Caputo, who took his own life after a long battle with depression. Despite oppressive heat and humidity, people leaned on one another for emotional support.

The service was opened by Sunshine Cathedral’s Senior Minister, Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, who shared a biblical story laced with mythology of how God showed Moses the Promised Land, kissed him, and took him home. Afterwards, he said it was important to be there for Caputo and the community. “Chris is a very important leader in our community and it was important that we be here for him. He also asked that Sunshine Cathedral be present in some way and of course we said Otheryes.”friends shared their memories, despite only knowing Peralta for a few months. Caputo spoke near the end, and urged people struggling with mental wellness issues to seek help, and of his desire for Peralta’s death to be a light for others to get help, especially in the LGBT“Thiscommunity.wasmore than mourning the loss of a loved one. This was also trying to prevent the loss of other loved ones by getting that message out. I want them to know that they are loved. If they can’t believe that God loves them then I want to promise them that I love them. That this community loves them, so they are loved.”

As people entered, they were given a white mesh, ribbon-tied bag. Inside were sunflower seeds and a dollar folded into the shape of a heart. Sunflowers were Peralta’s favorite plant, and Caputo said he wanted him to look down and see blooming sunflowers all over. The dollar was meant to be a different kind of seed.

The Leo Peralta Peak Purpose Fund has been set up to help LGBT people who are struggling with mental illness or, as Caputo calls it, mental wellness. People were asked to give the dollar, and more if they can, to help the fund. Before and after the service, people gathered inside the house to have either Corona beer (Peralta’s favorite drink) or a whisky with a whisper (Caputo’s favorite drink), and sign a paper lantern with a message for Peralta. The lanterns will be released periodically, often on the anniversary of his death or when Caputo feels a need to remember and reconnect with Peralta’s spirit.

“I just want to do a couple more things.” “Okay, but don’t say I didn’t try to help. By the way, you left the chili simmering on the stove. If you don’t go check it right this minute it’s going to burn on the bottom of the pan.”

My guiding angel was with me when I came out and got fired, and when I was on the 17th day of my hunger fast. They are there when I screw up, and when I succeed. TALKING TO YOUR PLANTS?

In coming out as gay in a prominent family, as a writer for the Catholic newspaper, I drew both inspiration and courage from every source that affirmed my being. One such empowering line was from George Kazantzakis, who wrote: “I said to the almond tree, ‘Sister, speak to me of God,’ and the almond tree blossomed.”Ifeltcalled to blossom, to accept the loss of privileges in order to blossom as a young gayAnotherman. spiritual source of direction and strength came from the life of Francis of Assisi, whose prayer Ray and I say every morning together.

Perhaps I should leave this to another time, but I also express gratitude throughout the day to the angel that has walked with me since birth. It’s the angel that I call my “muse,” my “intuition,” my “wisdom.” My writing and speaking have always been inspired by my angel, and I thank them throughout the day.

Francis had grown up in wealth, and with every privilege it provides, but he turned away from it and embraced physical poverty for the sake of spiritual awareness. And, he lived his life talking to all things, birds and wolves, and the sun and the moon, referring to them all as his sisters and YOU’RE NOT CRAZY

“Quit arguing with me. It’s time to stop the gardening and get out of the heat.”

In my heart and mind, I have a connection to every living thing, past, present and Asfuture.such, I try to communicate with everything around me. I talk to the water when I swim. I talk to every stranger whose path I cross. And, yes, I talk to the plants in our“Well, garden.aren’t you putting on a show today?” I’ll say to the hibiscus. “Well done.” (This is when you holler out, “George, come here and listen to this guy. He’s nuts.”) When I pass the bamboo, I touch it. Each new plant brought home is welcomed and promised that I’ll do my best to make them healthy and happy. “There’s a lot of love in this garden.” I’ll say. “I think you’ll like it here.” I apologize to the iguana when I end its life. “I’m sorry,” I’ll explain. “But I promised the plants that I’d protect them, and you’re eating them.” I do hug trees, and I stop to tell the billowing clouds in the sunset that they’re magnificent. I laugh with the seagulls as they try to snatch a fish out of the mouth of a humpback whale. And I tell alligators how cool they look. I know that plants don’t understand my words, but they experience my feelings. Do they talk back? Yes, by just being the best they can be. Is there a pet owner who doesn’t talk to their dog, cat, hamster or snake? When you go to the zoo, do you ever stop, and look at the majesty of a male lion? “My, God, you’re handsome.” I talk to the gorillas and elephants, too. The words express my celebration of theirBackbeing.inthe early 1970s, when I came out publicly, and started this most remarkable journey of writing and speaking about the joys and challenges of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and now, non-binary people, it was a really scary time to draw attention to yourself as a “practicing homosexual.” There were no role models. Very few people in the United States would say they knew someone who was gay. I tell you this because you need to remember, or learn, how much courage and optimism coming out then took. As a “practicing Catholic,” I lived in a world of both moral religious rigidity and liberating spiritual inspiration. Particularly in the 1970s, Catholic nuns and priests could be seen marching in almost every civil rights demonstration. My experience of the divine world order, and my place in it, was heavily influenced by the emphasis of the Sermon on the Mount, rather than of the Ten Commandments.

FORT LAUDERDALE GAY MEN’S CHORUS AT UCC

“Come hear the music play” on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Fort Lauderdale United Church of Christ, 2501 N.E. 30th St. in Fort Lauderdale. The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus presents “Life is a Cabaret,” featuring Broadway hits and standards to kick off their 2022-23 season. The program, led by Artistic Director Dr. Gary Keating, will feature the full chorus, as well as soloists and small ensembles performing their favorite torch songs and anthems in an informal cabaret setting. Tickets start at $30 at FTLGMC.org.

Ronnie Larsen’s latest comedy, “The Actors,” opens this weekend and runs through Oct. 6 at the Foundry, 2306 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. In a story loosely based on the playwright’s life, “Ronnie” is so grief-stricken over the loss of his parents that he hires actors to play their roles. The cast includes Carbonell winners Jenni Hacker and David Kwiat, and the play is directed by Stuart Meltzer. Larsen warned: “This is the first ‘G’ rated show I’ve written and produced. There is no nudity, no sexual content and no swear words … you can bring your parents.” Tickets start at $35 at PlaysOfWilton.com. Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale, and ArtBuzz Theatrics present Martin Sherman’s “Bent,” through September. The 1980 Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-nominated play is the first to explore the Nazis’ use of the Holocaust to eradicate homosexuals in Germany and across Europe. When the play was first performed, there was little historical research or awareness about the extent of Nazi persecution of homosexuals, and the play helped increase that historical research and education in later decades. Larry Buzzeo directs. Tickets are $35 at EmpireStage.com.

‘SAY GAY’ AT LOST GIRLS THEATRE

Lost Girls Theatre (LGT) will host “Say Gay: Exploring the LGBTQ Past and Present,” two conversations about queer history in South Florida, on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami, 727 Rinehart Rd. in Miami. At 11 a.m., playwright and LGT founder Andie Arthur will discuss “The Lessons of La Paloma: LGBTQ Women Throughout Time,” about the 1937 raid at a gay bar in unincorporated Dade County. At 1 p.m, local LGBT artists will discuss the importance of queer representation in fiction. For more information, go to LostGirlsTheatre.com.

While the fall arts season doesn’t officially begin for a few more weeks, several local LGBT arts organizations are already packing theaters and concert venues with patrons eager to experience live theater and music following the quieter summer months.
