What’s Happening With MSI California Coastal Cleanup and Coastweeks Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2015, more than 68,000 volunteers removed nearly 1,143,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes, and waterways. Families, friends, coworkers, scout troops, school groups, service clubs, and individuals come together to celebrate and share their appreciation of California's fabulous coast and waterways. The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy, which is the largest volunteer event on the planet!

Join Marine Science Institute at Gray Whale Cove in Half Moon Bay on Saturday, September 17th for this year’s California Coastal Cleanup Day. Register in advance at sfbaymsi.org/events.

Calling for Sea change After taking part in a marine debris education program which connects kids to their local watershed, 700 elementary students, teachers, and volunteers from San Francisco and Marin cleaned up the beach and sat on the sand in the shape of a giant squid at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. In the image, the squid is calling for people to change their behaviors—contributing to plastic pollution, warming sea temperatures, and declining fish stocks— to improve the health of the oceans. This was Marine Science Institute’s second year coordinating this cleanup, and sponsorship was provided by the California Coastal Commission’s Whale Tail grants program. Five other similar cleanups involving a total of 8,000 children also took place up and down the California coast in honor of World Oceans Day on June 8th. Learn more at Oceanday.net.

Summer Adventure Awaits! By Alexandra Lee We are ready for another exci0ng season of discovery! At Marine Science Camp, young biologists explore their link to the ocean during an ac0on-‐packed week of fun and adventure.

With hands-‐on science and interac0ve ac0vi0es, Marine Science Camp provides children ages 5-‐17 a memorable and meaningful summer at the shore of (and on!) the San Francisco Bay. All campers spend 0me outdoors at our shoreside facility searching for animals under the docks and in the mud, playing marine science-‐themed games on our giant lawn, and observing birds flying overhead and across the channel at Bair Island. They also spend a day aboard our 90-‐foot research vessel working together to catch fish, collect mud from the boPom of the Bay and touch animals found right in our Bay backyard! Using scien0fic equipment, campers observe all of the amazing life found in the Bay and learn how we are connected to local habitats. Along with experiencing the marine life in the Bay and at our facility, Explorer and Naturalist campers will also venture to field trip loca0ons around the Bay Area. This summer, depending on the camp, they will visit two of the following places: Bean Hollow State Beach, Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve, the Gulf of the Farallones Na0onal Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center and the San Francisco Mari0me Na0onal Historical Park. No maPer which session summer campers aPend, they will delve into the fascina0ng features that make the San Francisco Bay Area one of the most biologically diverse regions in California. Through 0de pooling, traversing a local marsh, touring a 130-‐year-‐old ship and performing various animal surveys along the coast, campers will surely gain a greater understanding and apprecia0on for the incredible life in our estuary and along the coast. Marine Science Camp is a place where children make new friends, learn new skills, have new experiences, develop a deeper curiosity of the natural world and have fun all the while!

Employment

Volunteers can get involved with MSI in several ways, including helping kids discover science or facilitating arts and crafts activities at marine camp, maintaining the aquarium tanks at MSI’s facility, or even just by helping with tasks in the MSI office. Corporate groups and individuals are welcome to help give back to the community while learning more about the marine environment.

MSI has educated more than a million students over 45 years, by utilizing combined structured voyages on a 90-foot research ship with marine camps, canoe trips, and even an in-school mobile aquarium program to inspire stewardship for the environment with a hands-on approach. Scholarships and grants make it possible for MSI to subsidize class trips so all districts can afford to enjoy the benefits of an MSI experience, without turning a single student away.

Marine Science Institute is comprised of a dedicated team of expert marine scientists, educators, and office staff, each of whom is committed to the highest quality care of our animals, unparalleled excellence in education and the continued success of the organization. Marine Science Institute has established itself as one of the leaders in educating youth about our local marine life. Located in Redwood City, we provide wonderful working conditions in a terrific location, competitive salaries and other benefits.

Funders Spotlight We LOVE our grant funders! Each year, Sand Hill Founda0on gives program and opera0ons funding to more than 60 local nonprofit organiza0ons in San Mateo and Santa Clara coun0es. Since 1995, Sand Hill Founda0on has provided over $92 million in grants to local organiza0ons. They primarily fund two ini0a0ves: Bay Area Environmental Educa0on and Silicon Valley Out-‐of-‐School-‐Time. Since 2005, Sand Hill Founda0on has granted the Marine Science Ins0tute more than $117,000, specifically sponsoring children from low-‐income schools so they can take field trips to the San Francisco Bay’s waterfront, embark on voyages on our ship, and learn about the marine life and ecology of the Bay. Sand Hill Founda0on only funds organiza0ons that demonstrate strong leadership, visionary plans for the future and a culture of con0nuous learning. MSI does that! They love us because we consistently deliver on our promise that students will increase their proficiency in the use of the scien0fic method of inquiry, gain an understanding and apprecia0on of the San Francisco Bay ecosystem, and increase their knowledge of environmentally responsible human behavior.

Translating the Tides artwork created by students whose program was sponsored by Sand Hill Foundation. Translating the Tides is a creative contest for students who participate in MSI's hands on marine education programs. Translating the Tides is a wonderful opportunity for students to express, in their own voices, what they have learned and what they want others to know about our aquatic environments.
