Welcome back to the latest edition of the Rec Insider! Campus Rec is back in full swing and fired up for this year. We have a lot of growth and great things going on this semester and hope you can join us for at least one of them. A number of events are happening for students and alumni alike during October and surrounding Homecoming Week. Rugby hosts their Alumni event on Oct. 11 and there is a Lacrosse match in October as well. Then things really heat up as Homecoming Week finds us hosting our annual Tie Dye event on Oct. 21, Disc Golf Tourney Oct. 24, and 5K Run/Walk Oct. 25. This year, the run ends in downtown with a pancake breakfast and then the Homecoming parade. In addition, we have Open Climb at the Challenge Course, Fit Jack Challenge, and several weekend outdoor

Outdoor Pursuits

CARYN

Emily is currently pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and chose SFA as her current home after attending a conference with her outdoor program called Association for Outdoor Recreation Education (AORE.) She hopes to land a job to do wilderness therapy with at-risk youth and adults alike.

Facilities & Member Services Cory began his journey to the Rec as a sophomore at the University of Arizona and is currently pursuing a Masters in Student Affairs and Higher Education. He felt SFA offered the greatest opportunity for personal and professional growth and hopes to continue to stay in Campus Recreation.

Rachel Nanez

Aquatics and Safety Earning her Master’s in Kinesiology with emphasis in Fitness and Human Performance she hopes to move back to the DFW area and either find stay in Campus Recreation or go into Cardiac Rehabilitation to work with Special Populations in Health and Fitness.

Joining Campus Rec in Spring 2013 as a Fitness Assistant, Caryn has “learned how to approach [new] people” and has enjoyed being able to collaborate with others throughout many aspects of her leadership responsibilities. “This coming Fall, Caryn will be walking through the facilities as a Fitness Manager, where she will be able to do more of what she enjoys: Helping people reach their goals. Oh, did we mention... She is also a Group X Instructor for the popular Core ‘N More class!”

How did working at Campus Rec helped you prepare for your current job? Working at SFA allowed me to further develop my philosophy of a student centered and student driven department. I believe that a university experience should allow for students to be responsible for managing their own experience, for shaping their cultural, intellectual and social landscapes and for establishing an atmosphere where healthy risks can be encouraged and failure can be utilized as a learning experience.

Campus Recreation is an environment where students can participate in positive recreation, learn professional competencies and establish healthy lifestyles. I recommend that all campus recreation employees find ways to empower students while

also establishing clear expectations. Give students responsibility while also holding them highly accountable. Every experience in college should help to shape our students, and thus it’s our responsibility as recreation professionals to accomplish just that.”


FITNESS & WELLNESS Burning Those “Extra” Calories By John McElrath, Fitness & Wellness

What if I told you that you could burn MORE calories during exercise, and it wouldn’t sap time off of your busy schedule? What if I went even further and told you that you could utilize resistance training and cardio together to help reach your goals? Active Rest Training

A

Leg Press: 3 sets of 12-15 reps

Chest Press: 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps

After each set: jog in place for 1 min

After each set: perform 1 min of jumping jacks

Dumbell Lateral Raises: 2 sets of 10 reps

Lat Pulldowns: 2 sets of 8-12 reps

After each set: perform 45sec of body weight squats, squat jumps, or burpees

After each set: row 200-500 meters on C2 Rower

ctive rest training is the performance of an exercise, such as cardio, in between your main strength exercise set instead of resting between sets. An example of this format follows below. This format of training is a great way to stay active in between sets! It is a different method to implement within your exercise protocol if you’re crunched for time, especially if you are lacking resistance exercise or cardio throughout the week. Time wasted standing around in between sets is dismissed, while adding a combination of injury prevention and increased cardiovascular benefits. And the ultimate bonus is that you will be burning those extra calories!

Remember, the goal of active rest training is to “actively” perform an exercise instead of resting! A few things to keep in mind: The cardio after each set can be interchangeable to your preference. Always know your individual limits and consult a physician before participating in any form of exercise. Bodyweight exercises can substitute each exercise if equipment is not accessible.

RETIRING After nearly 35 years

of service, our awesome business supervisor, Janice Casper, has announced that she will be starting a new chapter in her life at the end of January: Retirement! Janice’s impact on so many of us is undisputable. Recreation Department is excited to announce the creation of the Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Scholarship. This scholarship is created to provide financial assistance to current student employees of the Campus Recreation Department. Dr. Raymond “Ray” Worsham was the Intramural Department Director at SFA for 43 years prior to the creation of the Campus Recreation Department. Dr. Worsham was the keystone to the Intramural Department for more than four decades and his dedication and lasting impact is something that we will celebrate for decades to come with the

creation of this scholarship. Under Dr. Worsham, intramural sports flourished to the highest numbers the program has ever seen. Thousands of students spent nights playing on the intramural fields, in the HPE and around campus over Dr. Worsham’s tenure. The strong intramural tradition lives on through our current sport offerings, The Intramural Champ shirt, the contact we have with former student athletes in the program and we are privileged to honor him with this scholarship.
