RAAF NO.95 WING TO REQUEST FREEDOM OF ENTRY TO REDLAND CITY

A centuries-old military-civilian tradition will be acted out when the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) asks for the right to enter Redland City on Saturday 13 April.

The No.95 Wing of the RAAF will hold a ceremonial military parade through the streets of Cleveland on the day as part of a Freedom of Entry tradition. It will mark the 10th anniversary of when the RAAF was last granted entry on 12 April, 2014. Freedom of Entry to the City dates back to the Middle Ages when cities were fortified by walls to protect residents from invaders – right of entry to outside armed forces was a privilege rarely granted but came as a sign of respect for the protection and friendship offered. While it bestows no legal right or privilege these days, the ceremony has deep historical significance and is accepted as the most honourable distinction a city can bestow on a contingent of the Australian Defence Forces.

During this year’s parade, about 150 representatives of the No.95 Wing will be challenged by the Queensland Police Service and will be required to present their scroll declaring their right to Freedom of Entry.

The parade is proudly presented by Redland City Council and will pass along Shore Street West, from Raby Bay Harbour Park to the ANZAC Centenary Park.

EVENT: Freedom of Entry to Redland City

WHEN: 8.30am to 10am, Saturday 13 April, 2024

POOL REOPENS AT CLEVELAND AQUATIC CENTRE AS COUNCIL UPGRADES CONTINUE

Redland City Council is continuing its staged upgrade of Cleveland Aquatic Centre, with the 20-metre learn-to-swim pool now reopened.

The recent refurbishment of the 20-metre pool included resurfacing the internal surface of the pool and the surrounding pool concourse.

The 25-metre pool will be next under the staged refurbishment program at the centre, with the pool closing for works expected to start in early June.

Council appreciates the community’s patience during the staged closures for these works.

Upgrades are also coming for the children’s play zone during its normal winter closed season. This will include repairs and refurbishment for the children’s play pool surface and concourse. A refurbishment of both the male and female change rooms and amenities at the aquatic centre was completed in November 2023.

HOMES FOR QUEENSLANDERS: RELOCATED HOMES OFFER NEW START FOR FAMILIES IN LOGAN

Five relocated homes are being added to social housing stocks in Logan to provide a safe new start for families.

Four three-bedroom homes and one four-bedroom homes were set to be demolished for the Logan rail upgrade, but have since been relocated to Woodridge and Kingston to be repurposed for social housing.

They join close to 1,000 social homes currently under construction across Queensland as part of the Miles Government’s plans to ramp up its social housing Big Build.

Earlier this year the government outlined a target of 53,500 more social homes by 2046 through its Homes for Queenslanders plan.

CARNIVAL IS ME AUTOBIOGRAPHY

NEW SLACKS CREEK BRIDGE

This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports. Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.

July 28).

“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.

The centrepiece of the route is a 35-metre, 30-tonne bridge which carries the 2.5m wide pathway over Slacks Creek.

Join us for a vibrant Community Celebration where there’s “Something for Everyone”! Come along for an afternoon of celebration, connection, and appreciation to kick start the National Volunteer Week (20-26 May 2024).

FREE Community event! 18 May 2024 from 12-6PM

The bridge was lifted in during a complex operation in May.

Raby Bay Harbour Park, Cleveland

Spans were transported to the site, then assembled, joined and lifted into place.

Whether you’ve dedicated countless hours to a cause close to your heart, or you’ve been touched by the kindness of a volunteer in your community, this celebration is for YOU!

The new section provides riders and pedestrians with an alternate and scenic commute to and from the Slacks Creek industrial and commercial precinct.

Enjoy a fun day out with friends and family. Sit back and listen or stand up and dance to a fantastic mix of entertainment.

Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.

Food trucks, market stalls, kids activities and more!

It will also be part of a future connection to the Veloway (V1) into Brisbane. Cr Russell said the link would improve safety for a range of users.

“I’m glad we have built this link, which is helping riders, walkers, joggers and skaters get around the city without the need for a car,” Cr Russell said.

Cheer the champions. Meet with groups and organisations who make our community a better place. More info on www.starcommunityservices.org.au

Cr Lane said an important piece of transport infrastructure was now in place for those looking to lead healthier lives.

So mark your calendars, spread the word, and let’s make this a celebration to remember! Everyone is welcome.

Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.

“I am proud to be involved with this Council-driven project. We are embracing active transport across the city, and this is proof of that,” Cr Lane said.

He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).

The new work also includes lighting across the bridge and in Reserve Park along with a number of safety cameras.

The $4.2 million project was jointly funded by Logan City Council and the Australian and Queensland governments.

Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum. “The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”

Council’s contribution includes $100,000 from the Division 3 Local Infrastructure Program. Federal Treasurer and Member for Rankin Jim Chalmers said the project was an example of what could be achieved when all levels of government worked together in the best interests of locals.

“I run on the Slacks Tracks pathway all the time – it’s a beautiful part of our community and I’ve seen firsthand how these improvements are transforming this area,” Mr Chalmers said. The Australian Government funding of $2.7 million was provided through the Local Roads
